Mr Ray MartinPrincipal

It is with a heavy heart that I write my last newsletter to the community of MCCP. Life is about opportunity and sometimes it comes around when you least expect it. The community of MCCP is truly a unique community with such passion and enthusiasm for all aspects of college life.

The College is an exceptional place with hard working and dedicated staff, amazing contemporary learning spaces and a belief by the students that they can achieve. The First HSC results were absolutely outstanding and this was not by chance. I am sure the current students will emulate this success in partnership with the outstanding staff.

I sincerely thank the Leadership team, the Leaders of Wellbeing, the KLA Coordinators and the teaching and support staff for all that they do and know that the students of MCCP are in good hands.

As I take on my position of Head of School at Santa Sabina College Strathfield I will always hold dear in my heart the students and their families and know that it has been an honour to be the Assistant Principal at this College for the past 5 years.

I wish you all the success in the future. I pray for your good health and happiness and a relaxing Christmas and New Year.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWSADVENTThis week’s Mass the Catholic Church celebrated the start of the third week of Advent, a time of waiting. It is a time where we begin to prepare for the coming of Christ, not only celebrating His birth but also making our hearts ready to receive him. On the wreath we have 3 purple candles, one rose candle and one white candle. The colours come from the traditional Church colours that are used during Advent. This week we light the third candle, the rose candle, and our focus this week is on the Joy of the coming Christ. We prepare this week by feeling the joy. We move through this week feeling a part of the waiting world that rejoices because our longing has prepared us to believe the reign of God is close at hand. And so we consciously ask:

Prepare our hearts O Lord and remove the sadnessthat hinders us from feeling the joy and hope

which Jesus’ presence will bestow. Amen

SYDNEY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS RELIGION TESTThis week we also received our Year 8 and Year 10 Sydney Catholic Schools RE Test Results. This test is a state wide Religious Literacy Test that examines everything that the students have learnt in Year 7 and 8 and Year 9 and 10 respectively. We had 8 students who received a High Distinction- which means they are in the top 5% of the state for this exam! Congratulations to the following students: Daniel Widders, Zale Briscoe-Hough, Alanso Thomas, Sabina De Leon, Thomas O’Brien, Mitchell King, Connor McSweeney & Julian Astone.

CHRISTMAS LITURGY On Monday, before our academic awards ceremony, Ms Thornton’s Year 8 Religion class and Mrs De Andrade’s school Choir led the College community in the re-telling of the Christmas Story from Matthew’s Gospel. It was a simple, but powerful liturgy celebrating the coming of Jesus in the stables at Bethlehem over 2000 years ago. Thank you also to Ms Elhage and Mr DiTerlizzi for their support in preparing the students for the Liturgy.

CHRISTMAS APPEALAs we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ this Christmas, we pause to focus on what is really important during this special time of the year. This season is more about giving than receiving, it is more about being selfless, than selfish. This was clearly evident in our Christmas appeal led by Ms Elhage and Ms Thornton, but supported by the whole school community. As you can see from this picture the College Community collected over 30 baskets of gifts for St Vincent DePaul and Catholic Care. These hampers will be donated to families in the St George area, who without our support may not have received anything this Christmas. Thank you for your support. Both charities were extremely grateful and overwhelmed by our communities’ generosity.

Thank you to all our families, students and staff for your support this year. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe new year.

Mr Declan Donohue - Religious Education Coordinator

‘SCHOOLIES’ IN THE PHILIPPINESOur schoolies break was spent volunteering 2 weeks in Manila and Legazpi. Our group bonded very well and enjoyed many amazing experiences.

We spent 2 days at the Kuya Center in Manila, interacting with street children and going out on the streets to see the confronting reality of poverty in the city. We also travelled to the regional city of Legazpi in Bicol to live in a village with Filipino families for 3 days! There were so many other wonderful places we visited, and we were amazed by the resilience of these people.

Scott Britcher, James Pelosi & Brady Muriwai

SCC SPORTSemi-Final MCCP 8 def Bethany 3

A close first innings saw our team down 2-1 but the girls managed to steady their nerves and focus on getting the basics right. From the second innings our girls took charge with some excellent batting, scoring the maximum 7 runs thanks to some clever base running. Erika Mazevski was awarded player of the match for some great pitching and fielding.

Grand Final MCCP 7 def Rosebank 4

The grand final was a tight contest with the game drawn at 3-3 at the bottom of the second innings but some terrific batting in the third and final innings (including a home run from Chiara Mascolo) saw us go into the field needing to hold Rosebank to three runs or less. The girls showed tremendous determination as they fielded the best I have seen all season and were rewarded with the win and premiership 7-4. I would like to thank all the supporters who came and supported our team it was much appreciated. Well done for a terrific season - Undefeated, Minor Premiers and Premiers for 2016!

Mr Jon Cullerton - Coach

YEAR 11 PDHPE REPORT

Our Year 11 PDHPE students have undertaken their Provide First Aid Course presented by Surf Lifesaving Australia recently as part of the Preliminary HSC course.

The Provide First Aid Certificate is a nationally accredited course that employers see as a valuable qualification in the workplace.

The course also supplemented knowledge for our first HSC Option : Sports Medicine which we have just completed. We look forward to again providing this opportunity for next year’s cohort in 2017.
