Mario Testino 1.This is a picture of Tom Brady (an American footballer) and a Doberman dog. The most striking thing about this image is Tom is pulling a similar expression as the dog. The image has connotations of masculinity; the baring of the teeth on both Tom and the dog, the dominance of Tom towards the dog and the non shaven face and of course the black suit (advertisement of fashion).The background is of a simple colour which contrasts the colour of both the dog and Brady’s suit thus making them stand out more with a high contrast lighting.It follows the rule of thirds as Brady has a complete direct address to the audience which makes them captivated by his masculinity and power.

Mario Testino 2.This next image is an advertisement in the V magazine (fashion). It gives off a vibe of attitude and rebellion coming off the two models, and it also create a sense of movement which is made from the flow of their hair and clothing (the feathers). The models don’t look as if they are out of place as the image was taken in New York; Bohemia (rather a gritty, hard place as you can see the t-shirts on the walls)It has a broad depth of field as the main focus is on the clothing, the models have a direct address on the audience however you can see the stern/sinister look on their faces.There is a high contrast lighting especially on the model’s faces and their clothing, however on the sky it’s quite gloomy which reflects the models’ mood.

Mario Testino 3.The first thing I notice in this image is the ring on Kate Middleton’s finger and automatically you know this was the image of the official engagement.The lighting and the clothing is warm and subtle which makes the atmosphere comforting, however the lighting is very artificial as normally if the lighting was coming from the outside behind them then there would be shadows amongst their faces, also the whole image is very staged as her hand is perfectly placed on his shoulder in order for the viewer to see the ring (thus making it a narrow depth of field).The body language on William is very protective and dominant but also this image shows an unconventional image of royalty as they look like an ordinary couple but the ring tells differently.

Mario Testino 4.The most striking thing about this image is the drastic change of appearance of Lady Gaga. This image was used in the Vogue magazine on the article about her album Born This Way.Since this image was taken in a studio it’s lighting is all artificial and it has a broad depth of field as everything is in focus.It gives a sense of majestic/enchanted feeling as this is done by the setting and Gaga’s clothing. The colours are quite earthy and peaceful which makes the image even more relaxing.If you look closely, there is no direct address from Lady Gaga making the viewer feel not as involved as they would when reading the article.

Mario Testino 5.This image was used in the Vogue magazine, possibly for advertisement purposes for make-up (judging by the shocking green eye shadow and red lipstick).It’s a broad depth of field as the model is the only focus.The camera shot is a close up so the viewer is able to grasp every detail of the model’s make-up or the piece of jewellery on her wrist. The striking thing about this image is the fact she’s holding a safety pin right next to her eye, which defies the purpose of a safety pin. However it could come across as a sort of wild behaviour influenced by the make-up.There is obviously a very high contrast lighting which is 100% artificial.
