The sea and the boats and crews that travel upon it provide endless visual joy. I cannot claim to be in the same league as pros who spend their whole lives honing their craft and who dedicate enormous resources in photo boats and equipment. I have never been that fond of posed compositions, either, so rather than planning shoots and undertaking complex setups, I prefer to capture things as they happen in the real world, focusing primarily on overall composition and anticipating just exactly when to pull the trigger, a trick in a world in which things change nano-second by nano- second. The results have been at least adequate for publication with my articles and other writings, to accompany speaking engagements, to help sell a boat or two, and even to find its way onto magazine covers, contents pages, and the like. Because usually I have been shorthanded on boats, trying to serve several roles rather than dedicating myself only to capturing images, my gear has always had to be highly portable, compact, and versatile. I began in the 1960s to carry a robust Canon film camera, which proved rugged enough to last decades making trips into blue waters, and I maintain a slide transparency library from that era as well as a digital one now. The examples here are pretty typical from my digital files, although significantly reduced from their original size and quality. Should you need stock images to accompany an article or illustrate a book, are a boat broker or owner who needs good- quality photos taken of a boat under way and its details, we should be able to assist you.
