There are few places better to start atrip on Florida’s st. Johns river thanon the Ortega river located near

Jacksonville. e choices for weekendjaunts abound. start at either the OrtegaYacht Club Marina, (904-389-1199,oycm.com), known for its helpful

and friendly atmosphere, or Lambs Yacht Center (904-384-5577, lambsyachtcenter.com), which has served the community for many years and where you can reprovision beforeheading out. Both marinas provide transient dockage and a number of

other services. From here you are only a long walk or good bike ridefrom the riverside Avondale historic district (riversideavondale.org). Attend the saturday morning Farmers Market, shop in any number of interesting storesor dine at superb restaurants.

A fun way to enjoy the riverside is by bike.

Business is always briskin the Farmers’ Row ofthe Riverside Arts Market.

Jacksonville Landing is a floating dock that canaccommodate a variety of vessels.

it will take less than an hour by boat to get to the downtown Jacksonville area.Begin your cruise of the st. Johns river at Jacksonville Landing, another rouseCompany creation, for those of you familiar with the inner Harbor in Baltimore. e free, very long floatingdock can accommodate any number ofvessels; however, there is no power orwater available, and it is first come, firstserved. As an alternative for shore power,

tie up across the river at river City Marina (904-398-7918,rivercitybrew.com), which offers fuel and 32-ounce beer growlers. eat at one thewaterfront restaurants, which includeChicago Pizza, American grill, FionnMcCool’s and Benny’s steak and seafood,to name a few.

if you’re lucky, there will be live musicat the pavilion located in the midst of the restaurants. During our last visit, we

enjoyed an acoustic guitar performance of some Jimmy Buffett favorites.

if you need to go ashore to stretch your legs, visit the highly regarded Cummer Museum of Art and gardens.Other options include the JacksonvilleMaritime Museum and the Museum ofContemporary Art, right near JacksonvilleLanding, or the Museum of science andHistory just across the river.

22 marinalife.com

AND WE’RE OFF TO BIMINI, BAHAMASWe awoke to a beautiful morning in Miami Beach. We left sunset Harbour Yacht Club for Bimini at 6:10 a.m. Our ultimatedesintination was the exumas. e bridge operator opened thebridge early for us. We started to cruise through governmentCut. it was a bit choppy, but things finally calmed down as we approached Bimini — 40 nautical miles in and four hours later!

We noticed that the water was gatorade blue as we pulledinto the docks of resorts World Bimini. My son, Max, rented us a golf-cart to get around — the main mode of transportation on the island. some people bling them out like they would any other hot-rod with custom grilles, booming stereo systems and big, funky tires.

Once we cleared customs and we were approved to fly the Bahamian flag, we headed to a pristine beach behind the swimming pool. getting to the beach was a little hairy — withtreacherous staircases that didn’t quite reach the ground. But itwas worth the trek. e water was even warm enough for mywife, Peri, to venture in! en we relaxed around the pool for awhile, and i enjoyed a glass of Cuban rum, something i can’t getat home. We arrived back to the dock in time to greet the arrivalof M/Y Bimini, a 58 Viking sport owned by my dad’s brother andsister-in-law, uncle Bernie and Aunt Jackie. We put together animpromptu cocktail party and enjoyed rum drinks and soulful tunes.

BIMINI TO CHUB CAY, BAHAMASWe pulled away from the docks of resorts World Bimini at 7 a.m.At around 11:30 a.m., M/Y Bimini passed us — i have to admit, atthat moment i missed the speed of our old boat cruising 27 knots.

We traveled 85 nautical miles through the northwest Passageheaded to Chub Cay. e area is treacherous with sunken wrecksand interspersed areas of shallow water. right after we pulled intoChub Cay resort & Marina, Max caught a shark off the back ofthe boat — probably 6 or 8 feet. Lucky catch (and release)!

We ate dinner at the little restaurant at the marina and enjoyedconch chowder, conch fritters and cracked conch — the specialtiesof the house.

PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMASWe pulled off the dock from Chub Cay and headed roughly 38 nautical miles southeast towards nassau. storm clouds threatened in the distance over nassau. M/Y Bimini raced by usthrough the choppy waters, and four uneventful hours later, weentered nassau Harbour and docked at Hurricane Hole Marina, just in time for a severe thunderstorm. We walked over to the Atlantis for dinner at Murray’s Deli and explored the property.Max played the slot machines at the Atlantis Casino, and thegirls headed to the aquarium. unfortunately, the forecast did not look favorable for our journey to continue to the exumas, but we were fortunate to be on Paradise island, with full access to provisions and transportation.

EXPLORING NASSAUe following day, after walking around the main shopping district on Bay street, we headed to a local café for lunch — filled with both tourists and locals.  On the menu:  jerk chickenand conch. We later toured John Watling’s rum Distillery, which is housed in a beautiful old estate dating to 1789, in historic downtown nassau. e building and its grounds wereused in the James Bond movie, “Casino royale.”

Cruising WitH > RANDY HINDEN

DynamicDuo PlusRandy and Peri Hinden took their 55 Fleming,Dynamic Duo Plus, to the Bahamas during the summer of 2013 with a full crew on board including their teenagers, Max, Fallyn and Jenna.Marinalife members since 2007, Randy and Periwere previous owners of a 1996 Ocean Yacht 48SS,which they bought in 2001 and sold in 2012. eykeep their 55 Fleming, Dynamic Duo Plus at Sunset Harbour Yacht Club in Miami Beach. Here is their story:

The Hindens (from left): Peri, Jenna, Max, Fallyn and Randy.

WINTER 2015 23

THE ATLANTIS RESORT We parted ways with M/Y Bimini as it cruised east towardeleuthera and we moved our boat over to the Atlantis resort forthe second part of our trip. e mega yachts in the marina gave usa taste of what it would be like in Monaco. ey were spectacular!

e following day, we saw that the weather forecast was notconducive to cruising out of nassau, so we enjoyed being “stuck”at the Atlantis. if weather keeps one from cruising, this isn’t a bad place to be marooned. rumor has it, Oprah was there.

Although the sun was out the next few days, the wind wasblowing and it rained intermittently, we spent a lot of time at thewater park. We were on top of e Abyss waterslide when wespotted M/Y Bimini approaching nassau, on its way back from a few days at eleuthera. soon after they docked, a huge squallsuddenly moved through. When we got back to the docks, ipoured myself a rum drink with pineapple juice, coconut milkand my new John Watling's rum. i could get used to this …

JUST ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISEuncle Bernie and Aunt Jackie (M/Y Bimini) joined us at the waterpark. at evening, we threw a birthday celebration forAunt Jackie, aboard Bimini. Fallyn and Jenna baked mini-cakesfilled with fresh whipped cream and chocolate chips, and we all enjoyed watching videos.

We had spent an inordinate amount of time checking theweather and ruminating about what to do. e weather the pastweek had been extremely unusual for the Bahamas this time ofyear. tropical storm Chantal was potentially heading straight for us. Our anxiety began to rise. e debate was whether to keepDynamic Duo in nassau and hire a captain to take it back to

Florida, or strike out and cruise back ourselves. is was very different cruising from what we have been used to along the east Coast. Cruising between Chub Cay and Bimini would beeight hours in the middle of nowhere, with nowhere to duck in.We now cruised too slow to outrun a storm. Boating is alwaysweather dependent, and safety comes first.

DEPARTINGAs we were ready to pull out of the docks, the generator startedand everything stowed, we listened to discussions on the docks, and realized we were more comfortable flying out of nassau. so we arranged for a captain to take care of the boat in case ofChantal and take it back to Miami Beach. We breathed a sigh of relief and enjoyed the last of our days in paradise. When thecaptain we hired told us the crossing back to Miami Beach wasvery rough, we knew we made the right decision. ml

Enroute to Chub Cay, taken from M/Y Bimini as it sped by. Beautiful scenery and fun attractions were part of the adventure at Atlantis Resort.

Where were you born?

Brockton, Mass. — where boxer rocky Marciano was born and raised.

How did you get into the marina

business?

i came into nantucket Harbor as the captain of an 82-foot Coast guard Cutter. At the time, the harbormaster of nantucket Boat Basin was Joe Lopes. He and i struck up a conversation and hementioned he would be retiring soon andthat i should apply for the job. ree interviews later, i got the job.

What is the first thing you are going

to do after you retire?

My only definite plan right now is to fly to Fort Lauderdale the day after i retire tospend a month with my son, george iii.

What is the craziest thing that has

happened at the marina?

During my first year as harbormaster,

when the marina was constantly booked, i got a call from a charter captain (withouta reservation) that said he had a ViP onboard and he had to get into the marina. i told him it was full and i started gettingcalls from senators and congressmen and finally i found out the ViP was [Former Ford president and ChryslerCeO] Lee iacocca. My boss called meinto his office soon after and asked if it was true that i had turned away Lee iacocca. When i said yes he pounded hisfist on the table and said, “at’s the way i want my marina to be run.”

What is your favorite pizza topping?

Onions and peppers.

Tell us your biggest fish tale.

My wife sharon, was the angler on thistale. in the Bahamas she was strugglingwith a catch and when she got it closer wecould see that a tiger shark had tried to eatthe yellow fin tuna she caught. in the endthe shark got half and we got half.

Clam chowder or beef stew?

Clam chowder in the summer and beef stew in the winter.

Besides fishing, what other activities

do you enjoy?

i love skiing in new england. When iturned 50, i learned to ski with my kids.

What is your beverage of choice?

at is easy — Bacardi Limon (lots of it)with splash of cranberry and soda and nofruit (it takes up too much room).

What is the most important thing on

your desk right now?

e 227 handwritten thank-you notes that i have written in the last month tosend to customers who have been to nantucket Boat Basin.

If your boat broke down and you only

had one tool with you, which one would

you hope it was?

Water pump pliers — a great universal tool.

Who is the most famous person that

ever stayed at the marina?

nantucket gets lots of celebrities, but three who had an impact on me are: [Former British Prime Minister] Margaretatcher, [Former First Lady] Laura Bushand [longtime companion to JacquelineKennedy] Maurice tempelsman. ml

St. Augustine: CAPITAL OF SPANISH FLORIDA

Cruising tHrOugH HistOrY >

BY CAPT. JEFF WERNER

The Spanish expeditions of discovery andconquest of the New World always hada patina of religious fervor to them. Theconquistadors were devout Catholicsand their armies were accompanied bypriests, but it was gold and silver thatthey worshipped.

The Castillo de San Marcosis the oldest masonry fort inthe continental U.S.

WINTER 2015 31

e spaniards had a penchant fornaming their discoveries based on theCatholic pantheon of saints or the holydays of their calendar. When Juan Poncede Leon sighted land east of the Bahamasin 1513, he named it La Florida, as it waseaster season and a holiday known as Pascua Florida was being celebrated backin seville.

Pearls, gems, silver, gold, sugar, spices and lumber from north and south America made spain the wealthiestcountry in europe. e value of riches that sailed into spain’s ports each year wasstaggering. in today’s dollars, the spanishcrown valued these new World treasuresat $600 million for the year 1550 alone—within 50 years, it more than quadrupledto $2.5 billion per year.

ese riches did not go unnoticed byother monarchies, particularly those inFrance and england. in 1555, the Frenchsacked and burned Havana, Cuba, theconsolidation and departure port for alltreasure galleons returning to spain sinceColumbus’s time. in response to this looting, King Phillip ii of spain devised a convoy system to bring the remainingwealth of of the Maya and inca empiresback to his country and appointed PedroMenendez de Aviles as Captain generalof the Fleet of the indies to oversee thisenterprise.

several years later, the Wars of religionignited across France, claiming the lives

of between 2 million and 4 millionCatholics and the Protestants known asHuguenots. in 1564, a Huguenot explorerled a group of 200 French settlers to themouth of the st. Johns river in spanishFlorida and established Fort Caroline nearpresent day Jacksonville. e colonists werebefriended by the local timicua tribe, andrather than become self-sufficient, thecolony relied on the timicua for food.some of the settlers complained about the hard labor necessary to make their pioneering venture a success, and within a year a group of them deserted, commandeered a ship and sailed to thegulf of Mexico to raid the riches-filledspanish galleons.

ose Protestant French pirates, whofirst squatted in Catholic spanish Floridaand now preyed on spanish ships, weretoo much for the spanish king. not only were these brigands heretics, they endangered the passage of the Fleet of the indies. e pirates and Fort Carolinehad to be eliminated.

in 1565, the king of spain sent a forceto destroy the French settlement of FortCaroline, with Menendez as admiral of

the mission. Menendez landed 30 milessouth of Fort Caroline on Florida’s eastcoast on August 28th, the feast day of st.Augustine of Hippo, and named the inletand surrounding territory san Agustin inhonor of the fourth-century theologianand philosopher.

As soon as supplies were unloadedfrom his ships and a rough fortificationbuilt, Menendez marched his troops north and surprised the defenders of Fort Caroline with a dawn raid. e defenders were easily overwhelmed andkilled. eir bodies were then hung fromtrees with a sign inscribed, “Hanged, not as Frenchmen, but as heretics.”

At the same time the spanish hadmarched on Fort Caroline, a group ofFrench soldiers sailed from that fort to attack the newly established st. Augustine.strong tropical storms hampered theirship’s ability to maneuver, and the soldierswere shipwrecked slightly south of st. Augustine. A spanish patrol soonfound the survivors and the Frenchmensurrendered. But Menendez executedthem forthwith, and the inlet where thismassacre occurred is now known by thename Matanzas, spanish for “killings.”

Pedro Menendez de Aviles was an important figure in the Spanish presence in the New World.

ese days, Matanzas inlet is also a little dicey for boaters. small skiffs, tenders and personal watercraft are aboutall that can safely navigate its shoal waters, and local knowledge is worth seeking out.to the north, the red-and-white stripedsafe-water buoy at the entrance to st. Augustine inlet leads to a safe passage for yachts. But due to the constant shiftingsands, cruisers entering this inlet shouldnavigate with prudence, especially whenwind and current oppose each other.Again, seeking local knowledge is advisable. Make your dock reservation at the Municipal Marina in the shadow of the recently renovated Bridge of Lions,or at Camachee Cove Yacht Harbor.

today, st. Augustine is recognized as the oldest continuously occupied

european settlement in the united states.ere are two major historic sites in thecity that reflect its spanish heritage: the Castillo de san Marcos, the oldest masonry fortress in the continental u.s., and the Cathedral Basilica, whichcelebrates the first Catholic parish on u.s.soil. History abounds in this city, but oneneed not look back only to the europeancolonization. in more recent times, the1880s, Henry Flagler changed the face of st. Augustine by developing it into a winter resort for wealthy northerners.en it was Martin Luther King Jr., in1964, who worked to break the color lineand made st. Augustine a pivotal city forpeaceful protests during the civil rightsmovement. ml

First, we took our time cruising theiCW from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, finally tying up at Bahia Mar Beach resort Yachting Center in Fort Lauderdale, with easy access to the beach, marine supply stores and Las Olas Boulevard’s dining and shopping. From Fort Lauderdale to West PalmBeach, my preference is actually to stayoutside the iCW and enter West PalmBeach through the Lake Worth inlet. From Palm Beach, we reached CapeCanaveral in one day. As luck would

have it, there was a rocket launch at CapeCanaveral that evening, which we enjoyedfrom the top of Defining Moment just aftersunset. in downtown Jacksonville, wedocked at river City Marina to meet local friends for lunch.

in mid-June we embarked on our next leg — from Jacksonville, Fla. to savannah, ga. Due to the strong currentin the savannah river, we stayed outsideof town on the Wilmington river atMorningstar Marina at Bahia Bleu.Downtown savannah is loaded with

fabulous restaurants, bars and shops. i got a kick out of stopping by Chippewasquare, site of the famous park benchscenes in “Forrest gump.” We enjoyed amorning swim off nearby tybee island before a quick cruise north to HiltonHead, s.C., where we docked at Harbourtown Yacht Basin. e marina offers greataccess to lovely bike paths and the HiltonHead experience. We were a bit behindschedule, so we decided to stay only a dayand then continue north to charmingCharleston, where we explored the area by

bike and foot, riding and strolling alongthe historic cobblestone streets.

next up on our northward journey was Myrtle Beach, s.C. where we dockedat Barefoot Marina. if you have an affinityfor losing golf balls, a stop along thegrand strand is a must, and either waythe scenery is stunning. From there weproceeded to gorgeous Beaufort, n.C. Because it was now mid-June, the weather patterns made the outside runmore enticing. e leg from Beaufort tonorfolk, Va., took us about 10 hours at a cruising speed of 26 knots. We had anexciting time rounding Cape Hatteras —also known as the graveyard of the Atlantic, due to sudden 20-knot winds, but eventually we pulled safelyintorudee’s inlet in Virginia Beach.

One of our goals was to make it to Washington, D.C., with Defining Moment for the July 4 fireworks. roundinga bend in the Potomac river, our nation’s

capital was suddenly revealed, an extremely impressive vista. We docked at gangplank Marina, not far from the national Mall and a Metro station. Afterward, we cruised north to the Baltimore Marine Center at LighthousePoint and feasted on local steamed crabs.

You can spend months exploring theChesapeake’s islands and towns, each with its own history and atmosphere. We vowed to return but meanwhilepushed onward to the C&D Canal andthen the Delaware Bay. is was a very enjoyable leg to navigate, and it was aneasy cruise into the Cape May Canal.Cape May, n.J., is a quaint Victorianshore town. Both south Jersey Marina and Canyon Club Marina are great placesto tie up.

Our next stop was the Jersey coast’sManasquan inlet. it had been a year sinceHurricane sandy devastated the area, and there was still lots of construction

happening. Hoffman’s Marina, in Brielle, offered a convenient place to dock. Later,we rounded new Jersey’s sandy Hook and came into new York City through the Ambrose Channel. e ferry and shipping traffic can get hectic aroundsouthern Manhattan, where the east and Hudson rivers merge. extreme caution and concentration are warrantedas you wave to Miss Liberty.

We docked at Liberty Landing Marinain Jersey City, n.J., just across the riverfrom Manhattan. e location was perfectand offered a full-service marine centerwith easy access to new York City via the Path train. We also knew that thiswould be a great base from which to begin the next phase of this ongoing journey: exploring the Hudson river,Long island sound and the south shore of Long island. ml

Without doubt the root’n toot’n-nest dive bar on our list, Flora-Bama is like a nonstop beach party housed in a building designed by M.C. escher. e all-wood,ship-like structure towers over the sand with multiple levels, stairways and decks — most of them facing the big dance floor and stage. to date, Lakefest has raised over $500,000 benefiting various nonprofit organizations including the Juvenile Diabetesresearch Foundation, the American Cancersociety, the Legacy Brain Foundation andthe texas Association for infant MentalHealth. e featured event includes a countrymusic concert at one of their local marinasand has spotlighted some of the biggest names on the texas country music scene like the eli Young Band, Jack ingram,Wade Bowen, roger Creager, stoney Larue, robert earl Keen and Johnny Cooper; just to name a few. since boating is a big part of the Marinas international lifestyle and the event drawsthousands to the lake to help deserving charities, it also presentsopportunity for attendees to learn about boating safety and clean-water initiatives. Having reached its 10-year milestone,

the event is going strong with key partnerships for 2015 includingsafeway and Amazon.

Charitable spirit spills down through the Marinas internationalorganization to its many locations throughout the country. Many carry the honorable distinction as “Clean Marinas.” the Clean Marinas program is an ongoing endeavor by a

marina industry alliance determined to provide environmentally clean facilities andprotect the states’ coastal and inland watersfrom pollution. Marinas international alsoparticipates in an annual shore clean-up

operation and donates time, manpower and resources to keepthe waterways clean for the next generation of boaters.

Local causes also tug at the heartstrings of Marinas international’s managers. Aqualand Marina on georgia’s LakeLanier held a fundraiser during its “Farewell to summer 2014”member appreciation party, where all funds donated were used to offset medical costs for three firefighters who were seriouslyinjured due to an aerial ladder truck collapse. “ese heroes risklife and limb for our families every day,” said Patrick Kenney, general manager at Aqualand Marina. “e boating community is one of the most dedicated and committed groups to giving backand to standing up for those who are victims of illness or injury.”

W hat next? After three summer seasons cruising the eastern

seaboard, my husband, Peter, and i wereready to go somewhere new. granted wehadn’t examined every port of call, but wehad cruised as far north as the Canadianborder along the coast of Maine and south to Florida and the Bahamas.

now, we looked inward, toward theu.s. and Canadian interior. We had heardwonderful stories about the great Loop.is popular loop cruise encompasses the Hudson river, the erie Canal, thegreat Lakes, the Mississippi and othersouthbound rivers to the gulf of Mexicoand then the inland waterways on the westcoast of Florida and finally back up the

east Coast. Peter and i were intrigued with the Hudson river and great Lakesportion of the loop. We had heard aboutthe picturesque 1,000 islands on the st. Lawrence seaway and the trent-severnWaterway, one of the Canadian Canal systems. We investigated several mini-loopsthat cruisers follow both clockwise andcounterclockwise on the newYork canalsystem, the st. Lawrence, the CanadianCanals and Lake Champlain and realizedwe could design a custom trip.

As we began to plan our fourth cruisingseason, it occurred to us that our trip could be a platform for a larger plan totake our Zimmerman 36-foot lobster boat Bee Weems to the Pacific northwest.

Peter’s ultimate dream was to cruise toAlaska in his own boat one day. e accomplishment of that dream wouldcome true the following year, but weneeded to set the stage.

We developed an ambitious plan to cruise two months from Annapolis to Deluth, Minn. A trip like this would require moving almost every day to travelthe 2,100 miles in 60 days. We quickly realized that we couldn’t do everything we wanted in that amount of time, so wegave up the idea of the Lake Champlain/Montreal portion, shelving this for a future trip.

it helped to create a tentative float planand break the trip into eight segments.

e adventure for us really began as weheaded north on the Hudson from newYork City. We had been told that it wasn’tsafe to begin the northbound journey untilearly July because of the time it takes towash away all the debris from the springmelt after a harsh winter.

For me, cruising the Hudson was like traveling through an english pastoral painting. such a contrast to thecrisscross of wakes from the multitude ofboats in new York Harbor. e changewas almost instantaneous once we passedManhattan island on the starboard side.e natural beauty of the Palisades came

first and was a welcoming relief from theconcrete city.

During 160 miles from new York City to troy river the river was tranquilwith an occasional small village or largemansion dotting the high banks. erewas very little boat traffic to disturb thepeaceful setting. e Hudson river is atidal estuary that flows two ways with agentle current of 1.5 knots. At some point along the way, a distinct changefrom salt to sweet water occurred. Wecould smell the difference in the air. From that moment on we realized wewould be traveling in fresh water, a newexperience for us. no need to check thetide charts anymore.

Our first stop was under the shadow of the tappan Zee Bridge on the 4th ofJuly. tarrytown Marina is the perfectjumping off place to visit Kykuit, therockefeller estate and Lyndhurst Castle. We were fortunate enough to participatein an 18th-century independence Day celebration at sunnyside, home of Washington irving. On the other side of the river is the town of nyack, where we tied up at the nyack Yacht Club to explore the birthplace of the American realist painter, edward Hopper.

As we continued north we passed

Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park, where theCulinary institute of America and the residences of the roosevelts and Vanderbiltssit high above the river. We stopped inKingston to visit the Maritime Museum, and we cruised past the u.s. MilitaryAcademy at West Point on the bluff at thebend of the river. i particularly loved thepicturesque lighthouses along the waysuch as esopus and Meadows.

As we approached Albany i was a bitsad that we were leaving behind the quietbeauty of the Hudson, but i was excited tobegin the next portion of our journey thatwould involve learning to negotiate the locksof the historic erie Canal. An easy-to-readsign pointed out the turnoff to the westfrom the Hudson. Before entering the erieCanal system we successfully navigated

our first lock in troy. We were the onlyboat in the lock, so we didn’t have to worry about fending off other vessels whilegrabbing hold of lines on the lock wall.

e erie Canal was completed in 1862and was an extremely busy commercialshipping waterway moving cargo from the u.s. interior to the east Coast beforethe railroads took over. e present Canalsystem rises 566 feet from the Hudsonriver to Lake erie through 57 locks. Our course took us through only 32 locks because we turned off at the Oswego Canal cutoff toward LakeOntario to get to the ousand islands.Knowing that these were commerciallocks i envisioned bustling industrial cities along the way, but instead most of the canal system is scenic and rural.

From the Oswego canal we traveledeast over a small portion of Lake Ontarioto reach the opening of the st. Lawrenceriver and the ousand islands. e 1,864 islands are defined as being abovewater 365 days a year and supporting atleast one living tree. e islands arecharming, some with houses that coverevery inch of surface, many with two-doorvessel “garages” sheltering beautiful

vintage wooden boats. e most famousislands are home to the singer and BoldtCastles, popular tourist destinations definitely worth visiting. We spent ourfirst two days on the u.s. side of the riverwith a visit to the Antique Boat Museumin Clayton, n.Y. and then crossed over to Kingston, Ontario, passing through customs there and remaining in Canada

The Saugerties Lighthouse, built in 1869, serves as a Living Museum and a renowned Bed and Breakfast for those traveling on the Hudson River.

At some point along the way, a distinct change from salt to sweet water occurred. We could smell the difference in the air.

for the next three weeks.By the time we arrived at e trent

severn Waterway we were accomplishedlock masters. is Canadian lock systemconsists of 36 swing bridges, 41 locks, amarine railway and two hydraulic lift locks.e big difference between this systemand the erie Canal is that this waterwaywas never designed for commercial shiptraffic. e locks are much smaller and are sometimes hand turned. You only seepleasure craft here due to the maximumdraft of 6 feet and a height limit of 22 feet.e locks connect a series of rivers andlakes from the st. Lawrence river togeorgian Bay on Lake Huron. unlike the erie, we met other boaters waiting atthe lock entrances and found this was amuch more social week than any previous.

After traversing the marine railwaycalled the Big Chute, we broke out of thenarrow canal system into a large openbody of water, the georgian Bay region of Lake Huron. georgian Bay is dottedwith 30,000 islands larger than an acre.Although the bay is vast, there are narrow, unforgiving rocky channels to negotiate.georgian Bay connects to another

region called the north Channel, which is distinguished by the Canadian shield, a granite bedrock exposed by the glaciersat the end of the last ice age about 11,000years ago. e granite rock formations andthe windswept pines are characteristic ofmuch of the lake shoreline.

e final leg of our trip began with our last lock experience at sault st. Marie, the gateway from the north Channel toLake superior. Lake superior is 25 feetabove the north Channel. it took us twohours at 15 knots just to pass throughWhite Fish Bay at the entrance of thelake! is lake has its own weather system. it has a current that runs 1-2knots counterclockwise. We experiencedthe roughest waters of our journey on this body of water. it’s very much like the ocean, over 360 miles long and 1,300feet deep in places. Lake superior contains 10 percent of the earth’s fresh water, and it is 625 feet above sea level. Most of thetime we cruised parallel to the shore line — maybe a mile or two out, but whenwe crossed to isle royale national Parkwe were out of sight of land for threehours! Most of the shoreline is covered

with evergreen trees right down to thebeach. ere are miles and miles of beauti-ful sandy beaches and no people in sight.

e Apostle islands, a group of 22 islands off the Bayfield peninsula innorthern Wisconsin, are the most popularcruising waters on Lake superior. BayfieldMarina was our jumping off spot and wehad beautiful weather at the end of thesummer season to explore the sea cavesand nature trails on several of these islands.

We arrived in Deluth on Labor Dayweekend almost exactly two months from our start date. Peter and i had aflight back to Baltimore, but our belovedBee Weems was loaded onto an 18-wheelerand trucked 1,700 miles to Anacortes,Washington. e journey of the past twomonths was just the beginning of a muchgreater adventure to explore the Pacificnorthwest and the inside Passage ofAlaska in the following two years.

stay tuned for our next adventure tosouth east Alaska. ml

Live-aboard boater Betty robinson describes her current lifestyle of meeting

new people, traveling to new places andhaving new adventures in six words, “soaking up life from the water.” it’s awonderful if unexpected thing that thiswoman, who says she is outdoorsy and not a homebody, would be found fully living life on LiLi, her home, a 48-footKadey-Krogen north sea.

Betty portrays her early boating experiences in new england and the Jersey shore waters as “not very serious.”During her extended career in the information technology world — 30 years at Johnson & Johnson, and then thenext 15 years in it for a variety of other

businesses — weekend boating was a very social, marina-bound event. Herdock-centric lifestyle continued after shebecame single, and she says that when she took out the cabin cruiser she “neverstrayed far from the slip.” But somewherealong the way, she began to think aboutspending more time on the water.

Following an early retirement, Bettyexpanded the idea from just owning a boat into exploring the concept of livingaboard. she asked herself, “What’s theworst that can happen?” Friends who hadgraduated into a variety of yachts broughther to a series of boat shows, and after threeyears of intensive research, she decided ona Kadey-Krogen. Betty’s passion for LiLi

is reflected in her voice when she relates, For anyone, the transition to living

aboard is filled with opportunities andchallenges. two major considerations are boat manufacturer’s post-purchase assistance and whether you possess theskills and confidence needed to handle a new vessel.

Betty has been more than satisfied with Kadey-Krogen’s support throughoutthe purchase process. she spent as muchtime as she felt she needed with the commissioning staff, learning every detail of the boat. she is comfortableknowing she can call Kadey-Krogen at any time for its expertise and advice. Partof the Kadey-Krogen culture is ensuring

BY ELLEN HONEY

from the WaterSoaking Up Life

WINTER 2015 57

that its buyers’ experiences be success stories, and it most certainly has one withrobinson.

Betty addressed ownership of LiLi as shewould a new career, and she acknowledgesthat she probably would not have beenable to do it if she were still working. retirement changed robinson’s casualwater lifestyle to a “much more serious, disciplined existence.” Her early days weredevoted to training, not just book learningfor navigation and safety, but also hands-onexperience with diagnostics, managing theengine room and dealing with hostileweather. she hired teaching captains toprovide her with one-on-one instructionabout her vessel. Although she has her100-ton captain’s license, she still takes advantage of training seminars and hirescaptains for the legs of certain journeys to help increase her skills.

ese days, more and more women are purchasing boats or initiating these endeavors with their spouses. Betty has excellent advice for those women: insteadof thinking in gender terms, think about

receiving novice vs. expert instruction.Professional, low-stress training at a comfortable pace is critical, she claims.Find yourself a skilled instructor and takeas much time as you need to feel capableand confident at the helm.

Heading out in the wide-open waterswith unskilled operators and no lanemarkers requires extensive preparation to remain competent and confident and to make boating more enjoyable.some things, like the weather, cannot be controlled. Capt. robinson has had a “storm or two tug at her nerves,” shesays, which has made her careful enoughto “go when it’s safe.”

Living aboard requires a different orientation than a land-based existence.e lifestyle makes visiting with family, staying in touch with friends and findingannual medical and dental care a challenge.Betty’s answer to those issues is to goelectronic, which she has done quite successfully.

One of the few downsides to livingalone on a yacht is the need for crewmembers. Finding crew is not hard, butmaking sure they are competent and thendetermining whether you want to live withthem for even one leg of a cruise itineraryis more difficult. For a more extensivejourney, it’s wise to have a co-captain. Juggling schedules is never an easy task, but when everything falls in place, it’sgrand adventures ahead.

Betty and her various crew memberstravel the east Coast, from rhode islandto the Florida Keys. summers are spent

exploring newport and Long island in thenortheast or wandering the ChesapeakeBay waters from her summer seasonhomeport of Annapolis, Md. e tripsalong the coast are never rushed, allowingthe crew to enjoy the coastline from theyachter’s perspective. normally LiLi isbased for the winter at the Marathon Marina & Boatyard in the Florida Keys, but Capt. robinson and crew have alsomanaged to take extended cruises to theBahamas and turks and Caicos.

Living life at trawler speed providesample opportunity to enjoy time in port, and Betty thrives on exploring spots along the way. she loves running acrossarts festivals, visiting local museums andjust soaking up the unique local flavors ofeach location. And she enjoys not just thesense of community in the yachting world, but also its camaraderie, and she expresses enthusiasm about meeting new people and running into familiar faces.

recently Capt. Betty and her crew were tied up in st. simons island, ga., having a great time and eagerly anticipatingexploring Cumberland island with its isolated beauty and abundant wildlife. etrip Betty is most hoping will materializeis a group cruise to Cuba. she wants to“dance in Havana wearing a long floweredskirt with a parrot on it.” given her historyof determination and preparation, nodoubt it will happen. ml

DestinAtiOn > DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA

Just One YeAr AFter its CentenniAL CeLeBrAtiOn in 2011, Delray Beach was named the Most Fun small town in America by rand Mcnally and “usA today.” Back in 1911, when the town of Delray — without the Beach — wasincorporated, it had a population of 250 people, and pineapples were grown nearby forcanning at the factory in town. it was located along the Florida east Coast railroadabout 20 miles south of Palm Beach. in 1927, the Beach was added to its name, and thetown was stretched east across the intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean.

today, Delray Beach’s population is more than 64,000, which attests to its popularityamong snowbirds and boaters alike. e town has two distinct communities, divided bythe iCW: downtown and the beach. in fact, Delray Beach is governed by the rhythms of the iCW drawbridge. traffic stops along the main thoroughfare, Atlantic Avenue, 15 minutes before and after every hour to let the bridge lift.

e well-groomed beach is dotted with umbrellas and wood chaises. Backed by low sand dunes covered in native vegetation, it is a model for how Florida beachesshould be maintained. But while relaxing on the beach is a favorite local pastime, the downtown area is what has put Delray Beach on the map in recent years.

e downtown district, along and astride Atlantic Avenue, is lined with eclectic shops such as snappy turtle, Love rick Boutique and Periwinkle that will make any fashionista happy. At night, the scene comes alive in the many restaurants and bars.Visit Blue Anchor for jazz on sundays and classic rock on Fridays,or stop by Boston's on the Beach for Monday night reggae.

Confidence

If you’ve ever sipped a beverage whilesitting in a waterside restaurant thenyou’ve probably witnessed some

awesome docking … sometimes in acan’t-look-away-from-the-wreck awesome. to avoid being the star of a Youtube video you will want to usethese docking tricks and tips, many of which only require a bit of practice.

Docking with

Docking can be tricky, butboat poles can be a big help.

WINTER 2015 69

DOCKING NEOPHYTES

As with anything worth doing, a little bitof effort goes a long way, and practice willenhance that effort! For the first few timesyou take out your new boat try to do itwhen the marina is not busy and few boatsare underway. A weekday morning whenthe tide is slack creates the best learningenvironment. Don’t forget to tell the marina staff that you will be in and out of your slip and won’t require any help. You will feel less pressure if you have no audience as you practice your closequarters maneuvering.

If you are fortunate enough to workwith a training captain, start your very firsttime at the helm well after the boat is outof its slip. Discovering what it takes toslow, stop and actually reverse your boatcombined with how it is affected by tide, current and wind are the first steps to successful docking. Performing these skillswhile away from the dock allows a newhelmsman to build docking confidencewithout concern for the occasional oops!Soon these skills will become instinctivewith diligent practice.

MARINA APPROACH

Whether this will be your home port or your temporary tie-up for a weekendadventure, there’s a first time in every marina. Everything looks different fromthe water so try to learn as much as youcan before coming in to your slip. Oneeasy way to explore your options is to stopat the fuel dock first. Fill your fuel tanks or pump out the holding tank then take awalk over to your assigned slip. Scan thesurrounding docks for protruding bowpulpits or swim platforms that may requireextra maneuvering. Is the power pedestalpositioned that you must go bow or sternin? Will the starboard or port side beagainst the finger pier? Is the pier floatingor fixed, as each calls for different fenderrequirements?

For those boaters in tidal areas, be sureto see from which direction and how fast the current is moving. You may needto compensate and overshoot your slip, allowing the dominant force of wind or

current to help your maneuvering. Don’tfight the force. Let the force be with you.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

While every helmsman should becomeadept at maneuvering with engines only,it’s not cheating to use the tools you haveat your disposal. Bow and stern thrustersare a bonus when you must slide right intoa side-tie slip, but it’s important to knowtheir limitations. Get comfortable withhow much power is available, either battery- or generator-assisted hydraulicthruster.

Remember that pilings are your friend, unless they are cement! It’s OK to lay yourboat’s rub rail against a sturdy wood piling, sometimes using it as a fulcrum when thewind or tide challenges your maneuvers. And for good measure, have a walkingfender — one that’s loose and easy to grab — ready for your mate to strategicallyplace when contact is unavoidable.

Boat poles can make the difference between getting that line over the piling or launching a dinghy to make it happen. One pole is essential, two is preferred, and

three assures you will have a boat poleavailable when the others go in the drink!A floating boat pole is wonderful, but youstill need a second pole to retrieve the first.

Dock lines with large loops are terrificfor placing over pilings without chokingthem. A choked line is difficult to removefrom a piling and may need to be left behind. Either splice in a large enoughloop or learn to properly tie a bowline, which will create a loop of the size you desire. Many boaters purchaseprepackaged cut and spliced dock lines.at’s usually fine for smaller boats. Be sure to have long enough lines tospring forward and aft to deal with tidal changes once you’ve landed safelyand are permanently securing your lines.

BREAST VS. SPRING LINE

is is always a great topic for a docksidediscussion, but our first docking line is almost always a breast line. is dockingline is attached to the centermost cleat on your boat and unlike the spring line, the breast line is secured at the dock perpendicular to the boat and as short

Headsets are a great way to help with docking communications.

70 marinalife.com

as possible. is is a temporary line thatprevents the boat from blowing off thedock or moving too far forward or aft.Once you have successfully landed, readjust this line to become a spring line.

With a bit of practice the breast line can often be secured to the dock without your mate ever leaving the boat.no jumping from the side deck and nodockside help needed! But if you do require help, $5 makes a nice thank you to the marina dockhands.

CREW COMMUNICATIONS

Unless you are single handing, it is essentialto keep your crew in the loop. Plan yourdocking strategy, then share the plan withyour crew, agree to it and be prepared forchanges. It helps if you walk in eachother’s deck shoes and understand the responsibilities of each crew member but minimally you must find a way tocommunicate what is occurring — breast line is ON! when the line is secured or Secure stern line first! when the helmsmanfeels a change in the plan is required.

So how do you talk when the wind ishowling or your boat is too big to heareach other clearly? technology is a wonderful thing and options are plentiful.

In addition to a two-way hailer there arehead-set selections for every budget. Be sure you recognize the possibility ofsnagging wires and cumbersome batterypacks so try before you buy when possible. After you become competent with eachother’s roles then short, key words canhelp describe a multitude of situations. no need for long explanations to get thejob done.

Docking is an art that can be refinedwith practice, or for some lucky boaters it is plain ole raw talent. Just rememberthat sometimes you watch the show andsometimes you are the show. ml

In the Heart of Ten Thousand Islands

Named FOR SaINT maRk, theChristian evangelist, marco Island is thelargest of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands, offering year-round opportunities for excellent backwater, near-shore and offshore fishing.

The shallow water among this realm ofTen Thousand Islands provides a vast habitat

for popular species including snook, tarpon, redfish, snapper, trout, jacks, pompano, sheepshead and lady fish. These waters are quiet and secluded and well protectedfrom winter’s breezy conditions and providean excellent chance to introduce kids to

fishing. depending on the species soughtand season, casting artificial lures, plasticbaits and natural baits will draw excitingstrikes from predator species in shallowwater among this maze of marsh and grass. Here you’ll also enjoy scenic views as wellas encounters with rare birdlife and marinemammals such as the majestic manatee.

The term offshore may be a misnomerfor those fishing off marco Island. UnlikeFlorida’s east coast where water depthdrops off significantly within five miles of land, here that same distance finds anglers plying the wrecks, rock piles

and artificial reefs among depths of only 75 to 100 feet, where you can tangle with numerous species of grouper and snapper, kingfish (king mackerel) little tunny(bonito), cobia, permit and sharks. keep in mind when planning an offshore tripthis time of the year, winter’s breezes canmake for a sporty day on the water so you should plan accordingly. For thosewho wish to wet a line but stay ashore, numerous piers and bridges abound andprovide cover for pompano, sea trout, sheepshead and jacks as well as Spanishmackerel and ladyfish as they lie in theshadows waiting to ambush an easy meal.

Where To DockFor those traveling by boat, esplanademarina lies on Smokehouse Bay in theheart of marco Island. Here, four concretefloating docks feature 77-slips capable of handling vessels up to 60 feet. each slip features water, electric, holding tank

Tackle Tip — Drag SettingWhether you’re shallow-water angler orbluewater fanatic, an important part oftackle preparation includes a proper drag setting on the reel. a general rule of thumb is drag resistance should be set at approximately 25 percent of therated breaking strength of the line. Inother words, if your reel, whether spinning or conventional, is spooled with30-pound test, the drag setting should be

approximately 7.5 to 8 pounds. This willallow for enough resistance to tire yourquarry while also preventing a broken line. additionally, keep in mind as spooldiameter decreases due to a large amountof line in the water, drag will increase significantly so you may need to back offon the drag during prolonged battles withlarge gamefish. ml

You would think that the last thing I’d want todo on my day off was jump on a boat. Forthe past 14 years I’ve lived onboard variousyachts, but my days are busy inside the boatcooking for guests and crew, so when wearrived in Costa Rica the first thing I didwas look for a guide with a boat to showme all I’d missed.

We hadn’t motored more than 100feet from the black volcanic sand of thebeach into the bay when Herardo pointedover the water.

He swung the bow of the boat towardthe mouth of the bay. two islands coveredin a vibrant green canopy of trees blockedthe waves of the Pacific and the view ofendless blue, but I doubted the serenebeauty was what had the man excited.

Suddenly, the water exploded and the ridged mouth of a humpback whaleshot into the air. to the right, the wateropened again and a smaller, less wrinkledidentical mouth broke the surface.

I swiveled on the wood bench,

clutching the rail and stared in awe.e massive body seemed to hover

half out of the water like it was suspendedby invisible marionette strings before arching backwards and splashing into thecalm water. White water rocketed up andsprayed the calf as he too sunk back into the bay.

“And you thought they were myths.”My husband’s eyes twinkled the samecolor as the water around us. His smilecreated as many ridges around his eyes

as those on the underside of the whale.“I’ve never seen a whale.” I told

Herardo, knowing he couldn’t understandme but hoping he sensed the excitementin my voice.

Patrick laughed. “We used to see them every morning in tahiti. ey were everywhere.”

“Yes, but you never came and got me.”“You were busy making breakfast.”“For you!” My voice squealed. “I

was making breakfast for you!”Herardo laughed. He may not

understand what we were saying, but the exasperated banter of husband andwife was universal. He pointed again.

One of the mama whale’s pectoral fins sliced out of the water and rolledthrough the air.

Herardo slowed the boat and leanedagainst the center console to watch theshow he’d probably seen a thousand times.

As if sensing they had to make up for my years of missed sightings, thehumpback and her calf breached, jumped and frolicked in the water for the next 20 minutes while the roasting sun rose higher, and I swore I’d leave thegalley more if this was what I’d see.

Patrick fidgeted in the seat beside me, eager to get to the surf spot of our

destination. He’d seen plenty of whales. His life on the outside of the boat wasmuch different from mine inside.

“Vámonos!” Herardo swung the pangaaway from the aquatic Cirque du Soleiland headed for open water.

We sailed past red rock cliffs and seasidecaves. It wasn’t long before the next showstarted. A school of spotted Pacific dolphinleapt across the bow and raced in our wake.eir white spots flashed in the sunlight aswe sped to the wave.

Patrick tossed his board into the water, vaulted over the side and paddled towardshore before Herardo had the anchordown, leaving just the guide and me to divvy up lunch.

Herardo lifted the front hatch of theboat. e rusty hinges squeaked. He pulleda foil-wrapped dish from the ice and heldit out to me.

I removed the cover and peered inside.e black beans of the gallo pinto hadturned the rice a grey color. Flakes of redpepper peeked out from between thegrains I’d seen with every meal since we’darrived in Costa Rica.

“tu cocina?” I pointed at Herardo hoping I had the right tense but doubted it.

He shook his head and held out another dish. “Mi esposa.”

With my broken Spanish and his littleEnglish I pieced together the menu hiswife had cooked us.

I opened the next dish to the sight ofceviche. “tu pesca?”

His wide toothy smile needed no trans-lation. I knew he’d caught the fish himself.

e tang of limejuice lit up my mouthand punched through the soft delicate fish.the heat of the chilies burned my sensesand awakened my hunger. is was spicierthan the other versions I’d tasted along the coast.

turning back to the hatch, he pulledout a coconut and machete. He swung theblade at the coconut, peeling the huskaway, then tossed the coconut in the air, caught it and swung again. Hack, toss, twist, hack, toss, twist. He continued untilthe top of the coconut showed the whitemeat inside.

I checked to see he still had all his fingers and smiled.

He took the tip of the machete andpierced a hole in the meat of the coconutand handed it to me.

I brought the coconut to my lips anddrank. e cool water inside beat back the roasting sun and quenched my thirst.

“Muy rica” I used the Costa Rican term to express how delicious it all was,but Herardo wasn’t listening. Instead hepointed at two sea turtles bobbing in theswell. I hung an arm over the side andtrailed my fingers through the warm water.Maybe I’d never return to the galley. ml
