63% of US population feels marijuana should be legal. 33 states and DC have legalized medical marijuana. 10 states and DC having also legalized recreational marijuana. 55 million in the US report using marijuana. Teens are more likely to use marijuana than cigarettes. 37% of 12 th graders used e-cigarettes last year – of those 13% reported vaping marijuana. Marijuana (cannabis) means: ALL parts and derivatives of the cannabis plant including concentrates. Marijuana is illegal on a federal level, as it is still a Schedule I drug. The tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in the plant gets you high, the cannabidiol (CBD) does not. Today’s marijuana plant has a higher THC content than that of the 1970’s. Marijuana concentrates contain high amounts of THC, sometimes more than 80%. The recommended dose for concentrates is small, about the size of a pinhead. Concentrates include: shatter, budder, wax, rosin, butane hash oil (BHO), bubble hash and more. They are heated in a dab ring, creating a vapor. The vapor is then inhaled, referred to as “dabbing”. Food products, called edibles, can contain high amounts of THC and are different from inhaled marijuana as the effect is often delayed and longer lasting. The recommended dose for an edible can be only a small portion of the serving size. Overdose is not uncommon, especially among those unfamiliar with edibles. Marijuana-related calls to poison centers and emergency room visits have increased in Colorado and Oregon since legalization. Oregon reports explosions and burns from making cannabis concentrates resulted in over $5 million in treatment costs. Marijuana is often perceived as safe but it can cause unexpected effects or medicals problems. Studies indicate that chronic use of marijuana is linked to mental health disorders including depression, anxiety and psychosis. Marijuana use can lead to marijuana use disorder and can be addictive in severe cases. What is marijuana? What are marijuana concentrates and edibles? How safe is marijuana?
