Espiritu Libre Resort is located near the ancient city of Antigua in Guatemala on an avocado plantation that will be opened to the general public as a teaching method for growing crops. We can learn a lot from our ancestor’s way of life. For this reason I did some digging into the past of an ancient people. This civilization was, at their time—and it can be argued that they are still

to this day—some of the most scientifically intune with mother earth. The Mayan’s took only what they needed and gave back more than they took. I wanted this project to not only reflect how sustainable design has shaped our future by taking inspiration and knowledge from our past, but also teach these innovations. Guatemala seemed the perfect place to do this thanks to their 48% Mayan population.

I researched the wind speed and compared this to the average temperature and humidity rates so that I could build the resort in the orientation that would best help eliminate those effects as much as possible. I also took into consideration the location of the best views keeping in mind the sunrise and sunset. Also I had to deal with the location of the many ancient avocado trees that were on site. I

wanted to uses them rather than relocate them; use them as natural shades from the southern sun while also having them represent how mother nature’s ancient creatures live.

Antigua is full of rich colors that decorate its wonderfully cultured world. These lively colors play a huge role in the lives of Antigua’s people. Colors not only adorn the beautiful rugs, tapestries and traditional clothing, but also las casas (the houses) themselves. The energy of this vivid city was the source of my inspiration. I have located living machines close to the entracne as a piece of the landscape as shown this the exterior perspective. These pools of water filter the black water from the entire resort into pure reuseable water but also acts as a teaching method for those who come to stay. Guests are able to walk by the living machines and witness first hand how natural life purefice itself. A green roof is located on the resort itself as well as on each indiviual suit. The suits have been equeiped with a sort of monitoring system so that the guest can see and be aware of their daily usage of water.

Minimalism/Feng Shui (Chopsticks) About 25 million chopsticks are thrown out yearly in Asia; that’s a lot of trees. In my design I want to bring awareness to this by creating symulating patterns that will catch the eye and put one at ease. In place of those disgarded

chopsticks could have been homes built for many. An item so simple, so minimal, can have a huge impact. The home is a place of safeness and warmth. So this is chopsticks. I played a lot with the different shapes chopsticks can make. I threw them in the air

and let them fall to the ground creating a unique pattern that I carried throughout the three units. I also played with the shadows the chopsticks created as well as the negetive and positive space that these distinct forms created. I wanted each unit to have it’s owe unique feel and just as the

falling of these patterns are never the same I wanted the chopstick theme to be its very own notable decoration for each individual unit as well. My clients asked for a very minimalist theme with a sence of balance; however, being as the

three of them are all unique, each wanted his or her own personal aparement design, so naturally I had three different spaces with three distinct designs all having a balance and feng shui feel as the main theme. And that is what I have done here.

Each material I have used throughout each space has been either 100% recycled or as sustainable as it comes. A feng shui home cannot be so without the karmic releaf of the materials themselves. The materials are very high end quality and are very durable.

In this fisrt unit I have dipicted the chopstick theme with a bamboo tiling on one of the walls. This theme is simple and clean and flows every well with the color scheme that I have layed out for this perticular room.

In this second unit I have made an interesting entrace witht the chopstick pattern in a concaved wall that follows through to create a convext wall with some of the pattern protrubing out from the wall.

I followed this patterend into the kitchen; however, took it from the wall to the ceiling creating an eye catching pattern. Again the materials used are sustainable and the colors complement each other in a clean and simple way.

In this last unit the dining room is an entertanment area so I have created an interesting seating area that faces the living area with the chopstick theme following along the inside of the cut-out wall.

In the master bedroom of the last unit the pattern follows through in a more abstract way. The room divider, made of gold painted metal, takes the negative spaces of the chopstick pattern for its cut outs while the piece behind the bed is playing with both psotive and negatives.
