MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENTI am quickly approaching the conclusion of my first full school year as Marian Central Catholic High School’s Superintendent. As I have shared with all the individuals I have been fortunate enough to meet, Marian Central certainly represents storied traditions, history, spirituality, and academic excellence. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many past and current parents, students, and alumni. As this academic year reaches its conclusion, I would like to reflect on the accomplishments from the previous school year.

The 2016-2017 school year marked the 58th year of Marian Central providing Catholic education to high school students in McHenry County. In January 2017, the Council of Administration established the Leadership Advisory Committee in an effort to define the role of Marian Central’s vision in shaping the culture of the school. This group is comprised of fifteen people who have played a key role in the building of the school over the past four decades, including teachers, coaches, pastors, alumni, and past and present Council of Administration members. The purpose of this committee is to review past practices in order to advise and counsel future leaders of Marian Central, ensuring mission integration and successful academic and growth strategies moving forward. The Leadership Advisory Committee formed three sub-committees: Spiritual, Athletic and Academic Advisory Groups. These groups were created to ensure the school’s vision, “Pilgrims on the Way of Truth,” guides all aspects of the school’s strategies with regard to development, scholastic, and athletic activities.

Hurricanes know the importance of preparation and conditioning. Many infrastructural improvements have taken place including parking lot paving, curb replacements, and landscaping enhancements. In addition, we also added additional irrigation systems and grass enhancements on our practice football field.

One of the most exciting additions to our curriculum was the design, adoption, and building of our IDEA/INCubatoredu class. A classroom was renovated to meet the needs of this entrepreneurial and business innovation class. Throughout the INCubatoredu class, students develop their own product or service in an attempt to gain investment funds in a final “shark-tank style” pitch event. Real entrepreneurs and business experts serve as volunteer coaches and mentors guiding student teams through the processes of developing a business concept. Such curricular advancements help the school in its mission to provide the highest quality programs for our students.

Marian Central students continued to excel during the 2016-2017 school year. Our students’ ACT scores continue to be the highest in McHenry County. Outside the classroom, the school sponsored over 30 clubs and organizations where students could develop their leadership skills and execute group activities. Our athletic teams won several regional and sectional championships, and the football team reached the state quarterfinals. The Fine Arts Department put on exceptional performances throughout the year. The Class of 2017 earned $24 million in college scholarships, which is a testament to the hard work of our students and the staff who prepared them every day. We are proud of all the accomplishments of our students and staff and continue to celebrate their successes from the 2016-2017 school year.

Marian continued to operate in a financially responsible manner with a modest surplus at the conclusion of fiscal year 2017 that exceeded our forecast. The school will continue to be good stewards of all funds provided, allocating those funds to benefit our students’ Catholic education; our continued goal will be to help the next generation of leaders grow and develop in all phases of their lives.

Please know the critical role that our alumni and community play in advancing Marian; the strengthening of that relationship will be a priority as I navigate the halls of Marian. I look forward to seeing the key initiatives come to fruition, as well as the marketing plans that will increase Marian Central’s footprint in our feeder schools, in our community and, most importantly, through our Catholic faith.

Sincerely and God Bless,

Steve Baldwin Superintendent

WAYS TO HELP

Methods of GivingCASHThe most common method of making a gift is to contribute cash. You may benefit from such gifts with a charitable deduction on your tax return. Many donors may choose to make a cash gift in the form of a three-year pledge.

SECURITIESStocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares that have appreciated can have an immediate impact on our campaign and also create an income tax reduction for you based on their current value. Because there is no capital gains tax when you make the gift, you double tax savings on shares you’ve held for over a year.

LIFE INSURANCEYou may donate to the campaign by making Marian Central the owner and beneficiary of your life insurance policy.

PLANNED GIFTSPlanned giving is the process of carefully selecting the best method and asset for making a charitable gift. Such a gift can enable you to take full advantage of the tax laws to accomplish your financial and charitable goals. Planned gifts can be made in the following ways:• Bequests by will or living trust• Charitable Gift Annuities• Beneficiary benefits from IRA’s,

pensions, or financial accounts• Charitable Remainder Trusts• Charitable Lead Trusts

The restricted gifts are deposited in accounts in accord with the donors’ wishes at the time of the donation. The net proceeds from the golf outing are recorded as Development Revenue in 2017-18 operations and expended on Athletic Department equipment and supplies. Memorial donations are either restricted for a particular purpose or deposited in the school’s endowment fund.

During the 2016-17 school year, the school’s development office was responsible for administering and overseeing three fund raising efforts:

a) the annual fund appeal b) the Athletic annual golf outing; and c) the annual dinner auction.

These fundraising efforts generated the following net proceeds during the 2016-17 fiscal year:
