Vision

Marian Catholic College is a vibrant faith community engaging with Jesus and His

message. Embracing Mary’s way of courageous acceptance, we fulfil Christ’s promise

of ‘The Way, The Truth and The Life’ in a dynamic and diverse learning environment.

Service: Responding compassionately to the needs of others and promoting

awareness that inspires commitment and active ministry.

COMMUNITY ACTION TEAM

Under the guidance of “Pastoral Care Worker” Sue Hone; the “Community Action

Team” is a group of student volunteers who work together to reduce the inequalities

and injustices that they identify within their community. The team have successfully

completed activities which provide practical support or financial assistance therefore

increasing the social and emotional well-being of those directly impacted. The TEAM

cook on a roster basis for a mobile kitchen (CAREVAN) which provides not only a

nutritionally balanced hot meal but also opportunities for socialisation within a lower-

social economic community. The team facilitated an activity to compile kits which

contained the basic personal hygiene items required by those who found themselves

either homeless or at risk of homelessness. The “I CARE KITS” will be distributed to homeless people, displaced

people or those in our local community experiencing hardship or financial distress. As the name suggests the kit

symbolises that someone does indeed care and each kit contained a personal message of support written by the

team members. Members of the team have found that their experience to be extremely rewarding and now have a

better understanding and awareness of the community they live in and the confidence to identify issues, plan a

course of action and implement a program or activity to reduce the impact of poverty.

PASTORAL CARE NEWS This week students were extremely excited to find out that the COMMUNITY ACTION TEAM had been acknowledged for the week they have been involved with within their local community and had been the recipients of a national award in the school section as part of the Connections Uniting Care Anti-Poverty Awards. The CAT is a group of students who volunteer their time to address social justice issues and look at helping to work towards reducing the impact of inequality and injustices at both a school and wider community level; with particular emphasis of helping those less fortunate or disadvantaged. Following the teachings of the Catholic faith the student’s main aim is to serve others through acts of kindness and generosity. The students meet on a regular basis and bring their ideas to meetings and once a challenge is adopted the group come up with a "see, think, do approach" Part of the journey is to look at causes, scenarios and sustainable practices to reduce the impact of issues. eg homelessness; the CAT broadened their own knowledge regarding this issue and provided relevant information to the whole student body in the hope to reduce stigma and stereotyping Plus CAT members conducted a charity drive to create the personal care packs which provided practical support to those identified as at risk or homeless. Students cook on a roster basis for CAREVAN and pack frozen meals for Meals on Wheels; both services provide opportunities for inclusion, socialisation and a better understanding and appreciation for the basic needs of food, shelter and a sense of belonging. The CAT is extremely honored to be acknowledged for the work that they have done and to be receiving the Connections Uniting Care Anti-Poverty Awards and hope to make a positive contribution to our community one small step at a time and take our inspiration from the words of Aesop, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted" The team would like to thank Miss Vardanega for attending the awards ceremony in Melbourne and accepting the award on the school’s behalf. The team would also like to thank ALL MCC FAMILIES & FRIENDS for supporting the activities and donating so generously. Without this support our activities would not have been a success. Although the year is quickly coming to an end the team has two further activities they would like to conduct. Wednesday 23

rd we will be holding another ZUMBA PARTY hosted by Ar’e Abera and

Liana Parise with all funds raised being donated to “Griffith Suicide Prevention & Support Services”. We will also be collecting donations for the Christmas Hampers which are donated to St Vincent De Paul and have become somewhat of a MCC tradition. More details regarding both activities will be included in next week’s newsletter. Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe Regards Sue Hone (Pastoral Care Worker)

As a part of their new food tech unit "Paddock to Plate", Year 8 students have been testing their

skills when it comes to hygiene. Thanks to the Glitterbug kit students were able to test both

how far 'germs' would spread and how effective their hand washing habits are.

For the first activity Miss Frost rubbed a cream onto her hands (unbeknownst to the students),

the class then stood in a line around the room and proceeded to shake hands. Everyone was

shocked to see that the remnants of the 'germ' cream was still visible under a black light after

18 handshakes!

For the second activity, each student coated their hands in the cream before being challenged

to wash their hands as normal. There were many appalled at their results and surprised at how

much effort it actually took to wash their hands properly.

It was a fun way to learn just how quickly and easily germs spread between people and

surfaces and certainly highlighted to students the importance of hygiene in the kitchen.

Students will begin learning about how their food gets from the farm to their fridge and are very

excited to start cooking next week.

Miss Frost

Fr Christian—College Chaplain

Dear friends, this week I greet you with the beautiful words of Pope Francis; “And here the first word that I wish to say to you: joy! Do not be men and women of sadness: a Christian can never be sad! Never give way to discouragement! Ours is not a joy born of having many possessions, but of having encountered a Person: Jesus, in our midst.” ― Pope Francis, Have a great week! God bless. Fr Christian

The Year 9 Visual Art class has been focusing on Postmodernism and how art can be used to comment on

society's values and beliefs. They have come to realise that, through art, they have the opportunity to chal-

lenge their audience and promote change.

Their sculptural artworks are a credit to this talented bunch and highlight some of the issues facing cities around the globe. They have addressed everything from nature taking back the city, pollution, constant surveillance Well done Year 9 Visual Art! Miss Frost
