Dear Parents, Students and Friends

This week the Director of Pastoral Care, Mr Holloway and myself attended a Marist Schools Australia course titled,

“Making Jesus Known and Loved”. The program explored the spirituality and tradition of St Marcellin Champagnat

and how this is expressed in the teaching and relationships at Marist schools. Marian Catholic College has in its

history the dual charisms of the Marist brothers and Mercy Sisters. Both have their centre, the lens of Mary, as our

role model through which to understand our call to bring The Good News to each other. It was an energising

experience and one which will help guide our Marian Catholic College community in the upcoming formation of a

renewed Vision and Mission Statement, commencing with staff but ultimately including all stakeholders of the

College in this worthwhile endeavour. Staff will spend time at professional learning meetings as well as the last

day of this term seeking to understand our mission, to be attentive to the calls of our time and be relevant in our

educational delivery to enable the best learning outcomes for our students.

It has been emphasised to our senior students and to some extent our Year 10 students that the final years and

the time that they spend at school, goes very quickly. There is no time to waste! Once the Trial HSC has

concluded, as I have mentioned at a recent meeting of Year 12 students and their parents, there will be no time to

switch off as this is the precise time to finalise course content and polish off what needs to be understood and gain

those extra marks, through attempting past HSC papers and asking teachers to read draft short answer questions

and essays. Our Year 11 Preliminary students are in their last term before entering the HSC year in Term 4 and

have final exams early September and our Year 10 students have had a number of sessions to help them in

deciding which courses to select to commence their senior years. A busy time once more!

Some of our Year 11 students are no doubt considering nominating for the various leadership positions to

represent the student body from Term 4 and into 2015, and which will be determined by students and staff. This is

another reminder that the year is flying by and I remind anyone considering such a role that they should be

reflecting on how they are presently showing leadership and have conversations with family and staff and anyone

else that they see as significant role models in their lives to gauge their effectiveness as a leader both at present

and how this might take shape in the future. Details of the process will be made available by Mr Holloway soon.

The assembly for speeches for College Captain takes place in a month.

Year 10 to 11 Transition

Thank you to all the parents and Year 10 students who attended the Information Evening on Wednesday

night. The hall was buzzing with excitement and it was great to see parents and staff working together to

support students to assist in making the right decisions for their futures. I would also like to take this

opportunity to congratulate Year 10 students on their mature approach and positive attitudes on iDay where

they demonstrated that they are ready to move to senior schooling by engaging in a day of exploration of

Preliminary and HSC options.

Parents and students are reminded that the Subject Selection

Booklet is available on the website. We have opted not to

print out individual copies for each student in an effort to be

more environmentally friendly.

Year 10 to 11 process continues

The Interview Day is a compulsory part of the Year 10 to 11 Transition. It is vital that parents and students

sit with one of our experienced staff members to ensure that the choices students make in relation to subjects

are suitable for the individual student and satisfy the requirements of the pathway desired. The process for

making an interview is included on the following page. If for some reason, you are unable to attend on Friday

8th August, it is necessary for you to contact the office to explain and make an alternative arrangement.

We hope that Year 10 students take some time to reflect on their journey and the path they would like to take

and we thank parents for their support with this process.

Interview Day

Interview Day: All students and their parents will need to make a booking on SOBS

for a 20 minute interview with a Coordinator to ‘tease out’ the best options for the

future (sobs.com.au and select Year 10 Subject Selections, then follow the prompts).

The purpose of an interview is also to confirm a position for 2015 and clarify

expectations the College has with regards to Year 11 and 12 at Marian. There will

be no Year 10 classes on this day as it is expected that all students and parent/

s will be attend an interview.

2014 MATHEMATICS WEEK CELEBRATION

The College celebrated Mathematics Week last week from July 21-25. As in the previous years, the whole week was full of

different activities that provided opportunities for each student to enjoy the many applications of Mathematics in their daily lives.

Each student was encouraged to enter at least one of the activities set for the week.

Activities included: the Bake a Cake/Cupcake Contest ; Maths Treasure Hunt ; Poster competition; Peom or song about mathe-

matics and Homework Sheets for students to solve Mathematical problems with their families. During the whole week in Maths

lessons, trivia questions and puzzles were given out. This was an excellent opportunity for all students to participate in solving

a variety of problems and see some applications of maths to real-life situations.

This year, we again ran the Mathematical words Spelling Contest of for Stage 4 students.

2014 MATHS CHALLENGE RESULTS

The Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians is a problem-solving activity organized by the Australian Mathematics Trust which is aimed at the top 15% of students in their year level.

Students received a problem booklet containing 6 problems. They were required to present written solutions to as many of these problems as they can. The problems were challenging and required time and persistence but were based on Mathemat-ics which should be known at that level. Students work with a partner on all the 6 problems.

I congratulate the following students on their efforts in attempting the Maths Challenge Stage problems .The problems were meant to be challenging, and students need to be committed. It is not just about completely solving the problems; it is a matter of participating to the best of one’s ability and learning in the process.

Bell Shakespeare Henry V Workshop

Next month, the Bell Shakespeare Company will be visiting Griffith Regional Theatre and present Shakespeare’s Henry V. In preparation for this performance, some of our Drama students participated in a practical workshop presented by an actor from the Company.

Huw McKinnon came to Marian and vibrantly engaged our students in a variety of practical workshops as they explored the plot, characters, themes and design concepts of Bell’s production of Henry V. Some of the main points included developing a new appreciation for Shakespearean plays from the Golden Age of theatre as he was the first playwright to present three dimensional characters. Huw shared urban myths about Shakespeare and the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. One of the main concepts we explored was the drama’s ability to transcend time and space to create a unique and engaging experience for all audiences.

Every student showcased their dramatic skills and high levels of energy during the workshop. A special mention goes to Briana O’Keeffe, Jay Zanesco and Megan Beecher who were leading actors in some activities. The drama students are excited to view Bell’s production of Henry V in August with their newly informed knowledge of the play and its production’s concepts.

Yesterday the Boys Year 7/8 Netball team attended the 2nd round of the NSW Netball Schools Cup in Wagga. This was the next level as the boys had previously qualified through after coming 2nd in the first round that was held in March. The boys played 3 games against girls teams from Gundagai High, Deniliquin High and Riverina Anglican College. They played extremely well against strong teams and thoroughly enjoyed meeting new friends. They then played Deniliquin High in the Boys Final, unfortunately the boys lost, however, have the distinction of coming 2nd in the whole Riverina District for boys netball, a great achievement! At the presentation, the boys were awarded with being 'the most friendly and funny competitors who never gave up and showed great sportsmanship', may parents from other schools commented on how good the boys were. The boys were a credit to the College and a privilege to coach, what a wonderful group of students, and a funny bus trip to and from Wagga. A BIG THANKYOU to Ruby Zandona for being our fantastic umpire for the day, you did a wonderful job, much appreciated. The boys who attended were Cesare Piccinin, Abishek Sandhu, Matthew Parisotto, Dalvir Singh, Rakesh Deep, Connor Bock, James Olivero, Tom Gair and Patrick Wordsworth. Renae Savage Very proud Coach.
