Dresden’s new landmark In the words of our Mayor

“With the reopening of the Kulturpalast and the dedicating of an acousti-

cally ultramodern concert hall, Dresden will be solidifying its reputation as

a city of culture and proving once more that art and culture run deep within

our veins. City factions, political and commercial interest groups as well

as experts grappled with this new landmark for Dresden for many years.

And I believe with all my heart: It was worth it.

The Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra receives a first-class concert hall

in which the orchestra of our state capital can majestically express every

nuance of its singular ‘Dresden Sound’. And because art and culture go

hand in hand here, moving the Zentralbibliothek (central library) into the

Kulturpalast was more than logical while, at the same time, also truly a sig-

nificant move: Where else in the world do knowlegde and education, music

and audiences come together so closely as here? And last but not least:

The deep-rooted Dresden cabaret tradition embodied by the Herkuleskeule

cabaret theatre now also has a new home in its very own space, adding yet

a further facet to all that which the Kulturpalast will now offer.

The Kulturpalast at the centre of Dresden, designed in the Bauhaus/modern style and opened in 1969, is the cultural heart of our city. With its massive glassed-in foyer and multifunctional hall for large events, it embodied the cultural concept of the former GDR. Yet as the acoustics of the multi-purpose hall never proved wholly satisfactory, plans to transform the old building into a cultural centre able to accommodate many different uses began to crystallise in the 1990s. After many years of discussions between the various municipal offices and the city council, serious effects got underway with the detailed planning of the new building, and in October 2013 the construction of the new concert hall began incorporating the latest in technical and acoustic standards while simultaneously preserving the shell of the building and its architec-

tural features. And bringing three grandly traditional Dresden cultural institutions together under one roof with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the Zen-tralbibliothek (central library) and the Herkuleskeule cabaret theatre. Dresden Music Festival events as well as trade fair events held by Messe Dresden will en-hance the appeal of the centre as will the new formats certain to emerge from the close interplay between music, cabaret and literature. Congresses and confer-ences will also be accommodated here.In its Kulturpalast, Dresden reflects the visionary: The creation of a home for the arts and for knowledge, a meeting place, a space in which to communicate, a centre which recognises the social needs of our own time and simultaneously acknowledges the future genera-tions to come.

For the first time in its 150-year history, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra will be taking up residence in an environment of sophisticated acoustics. The new con-cert hall will finally dignify the unique qualities of this internationally acclaimed orchestra. Constructed with premium materials, designed and realised by leading ar-chitects and acousticians, the ‘vineyard architecture’ of the new hall ensures optimum acoustical conditions for classical as well as many other musical genres.The crown jewel of the hall is the new concert organ (built by the Eule Orgelbau company in Bautzen), its 55 stops making it exceptionally suited to the symphon-ic repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries and thus unparalleled among Dresden’s organs. Its financing was made possible by the Friends of the Dresden Philhar-monic Orchestra association.

The Zentralbibliothek in the Kulturpalast is the result of merging the city’s main/music library and the me-dien-@age youth library, the two central facilities of Dresden’s public library system. Its design bears the signature of the gmp architectural firm which blend-ed spaces and furnishings into one harmonious whole. The concept is punctuated by unusually designed seat-ing created by Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau. New features include exceptionally well-equipped function, exhibition and class rooms, a 3D management system integrated into the library catalogue, a self-checkout and automated media sorting system. Highly varied public seating options, most with a view of the city, spaces for group work, a reading room and playback systems for all digital medium formats were all de-signed to encourage learning and working in an at-mosphere of enjoyment, communication and enlight-enment. The Zentralbibliothek in the Kulturpalast is poised to become an identity-defining public place – much to Dresden’s benefit.

The Herkuleskeule was founded in 1961 by Manfred Schubert. Eminent personalities like Wolfgang Stumph, Uwe Steimle and many others perfected their craft on the boards of this Dresden cabaret theatre. Works by Wolfgang Schaller and Peter Ensikat were played on virtually every single stage across the former GDR. Through all the years since, the revues have lost nothing of their provocative wit interspersed with gaiety, pen-siveness and boisterous musicality. The ensemble takes to the stage every evening; 340 times at home as well as in more than 100 guest performances across the country each year. The Herkuleskeule at the Kulturpalast opens in April 2017 with the BALLASTREVUE production.

Die HerkuleskeuleCabaret Theatre

The gmp architectural firm (von Gerkan, Marg & Partners) was proclaimed the winner of the 2009 in-ternational design competition for the restoration of the Kulturpalast. Originally established in 1965, the firm had already made a huge name for itself with its previous airport projects (including Berlin-Tegel) and the main Berlin railway station, as well as the stadi-ums in Brasilia and Manaus (Brazil) for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, numerous urban planning projects around the world and the opera and concert halls in Qingdao, Tianjin and Shenzhen, China. In addition to the concert hall itself, invaluable amen-ities including warm-up rooms for various instrumen-tal groups, private dressing rooms for visiting artists,

keyboard instrument storage, a private bistro and offices for Kulturpalast and Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra staff have been constructed at stage level. A rehearsal hall, dressing rooms for the members of the orchestra and storage and archive rooms are located on the ground floor while further equipment storage areas plus rehearsal spaces for percussion instruments are accommodated in the cellar. Of special note: Trans-parency is ensured by the massive glass facade facing Altmarkt (Old Market Square). Originally transparent, the glass was replaced by bronze-tinted panes shortly after the building first opened. The restoration efforts will once again provide a crystal-clear view into the interior.

In order for a concert to become an extraordinary auditory experience, a room has to meet the highest acoustic standards. For the new concert hall of the Kulturpalast, the contracting authorities and perform-ers decided to base the overall concept on ‘vineyard ar-chitecture’ which especially ensures richer sound and has already proven its acoustic excellence in many lo-cations the world over. To best accommodate the sin-gular sound of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the ‘theatre-in-the-round’ vineyard model was com-bined with the ‘shoebox’ concept (see box).Every single detail in the new hall has significance for the acoustics. This includes the flooring material and

wall coverings as much as the design and configuration of the seats — the ultimate intent is for the room to sound just as good empty as when filled. A reflector above the stage helps the musicians hear one another. The podium features portable, electrically controlled elevatable platforms to allow quick customization of different performance settings.The acoustic design was realised in a joint venture between gmp and Peutz acoustics consultants (Düssel-dorf/Berlin).

• the overall volume of the hall is maximised while the

depth of balconies is minimised

• the stalls are only slightly inclined

• while the stage is not at the front of the hall, galleries

are still provided adjacent and behind for choirs

and/or guest seating

• computer simulations and scale model analyses were

used in designing the walls and ceiling
