PRAYER & WORSHIP

FROM THE PASTOR

Freida Funk Carolyn Hastings

Rudolph Smoley, Former Pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton —Funeral at SEAS on Tuesday, March 9, at 10:00 a.m.—

Please pray for the souls of the faithful departed.

ST. JOSEPH DAY- MARCH 19. Use this prayer as a novena beginning Wednesday.

Wednesday, March 10, is the date for the annual “Light is On For You” offering of the Sacrament of Reconciliation throughout the diocese. In order to maintain the COVID protocols for distancing, as well as the make shift “confessionals” to provide space, we will make use of all three of our church buildings according to the following schedule: 6:00-7:00 p.m. St. Margaret of Scotland (1 priest) 6:30-8:30 p.m. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (2 priests) 7:00-8:00 p.m. Ss Simon & Jude (1 priest)

Please keep in mind that the COVID circumstances will prohibit coverage of the volume of participants that we have accommodated in the past. We cannot use small rooms or closet-sized booths. Confessions are available every Saturday (11:30-12:30 SMOS) (12:00-1:00 SEAS). The sacrament will also be offered on the evenings of March 24 & 25 (6:30-8:30 p.m. SSJ) and Wednesday, March 31 (12:30-1:30 p.m. SEAS). Masks are required and social distancing will be enforced.

Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God. I place in you all my interests and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary of contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls - Pray for me.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States.

2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly.

3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.

4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.

5. Notable during this Lenten season is that the Solemnity of Saint Joseph falls on a Friday. Because of this, there is not an obligation to abstain from meat on Friday, March 19, 2021, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, according to the norm of canon 1251.

6. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law.

7. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.

PARISH SHARE 2021 FINDING JOY IN GIVING

Our parish has kicked off the Parish Share program to help parishes and people in need, but also to help draw us closer to Christ. As disciples, we follow Jesus who gives us hope and the command to serve and love one another. Please remember that Parish Share is different than a one-time special collection. You can make a gift payable in installments over the coming year. Each pledge makes a difference! All parishes participate, and together our gifts provide much needed services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

We are still observing Covid-19 restrictions. Registration is required. Use the button on our homepage: straphaelcgs.org, or call the parish office to register.

THE ORDER OF MASS

PENITENTIAL ACT I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do, (all strike their breast as they say:) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

KYRIE

ENTRANCE HYMN | LORD, WHO THROUGHOUT THESE FORTY DAYS

FIRST READING | EXODUS 20:1-17 In those days, God delivered all these commandments: “I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me. You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers’ wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation

on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished the one who takes his name in vain. “Remember to keep holy the sabbath day. Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you. In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them;

but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. “Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything else that belongs to him.”

The law of the Lord is perfect; it revives the soul. The decrees of the Lord are steadfast; they give wisdom to the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right; they gladden the heart. The command of the Lord is clear; it gives light to the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is pure, abiding forever. The judgments of the Lord are true, all of them, just.

They are more to be desired than gold, than quantities of gold. And sweeter are they than honey, than honey flowing from the comb.

Brothers and sisters: Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike,

Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life.

Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said,

“Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow at the following bolder words) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing.

But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.

COMMUNION HYMN | MERCIFUL GOD—FEED US AND GUIDE US

1. Surely, you alone can save us. You pay our price with precious blood. Reaching through your great compassion. You lift up your people with love. 2. Surely, you alone uphold us. You give us strength for all our needs. Shielding with a father’s favor, You bless us with pardon and peace. 3. Surely, you alone can heal us. Yours is the will to make us whole. Soothing with a mother’s kindness, The contrite of heart you console. 4. Surely, you alone can free us. You break the bonds of guilt and sin. Bracing, till we walk uprightly, You bolster our hope once again. 5. Surely, you alone refine us. You give us grace for lives made new, Forging, through your fire and radiance, a sacrifice worthy for you. 6. Surely, you alone redeem us. You fill our dust with holy breath. ARING IVING ERVING

Labor without stopping; do all the good works you can while you still have the time. -St. John of God, Memorial March 8

We are approaching the midpoint of the Lenten season. Next weekend, we will “spring forward” into Daylight Saving Time. The weekend after that brings the change of seasons and arrival of spring. With all these time markers upon us, we might take the opportunity to examine how we are using our time. Especially, in this season of conversion, are we making use of our time, talent, and treasure to grow closer to God? Are we carving out quiet time to pray every day so we can actually hear how God is moving our hearts? Are we receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist as frequently as we can? Even if we are not yet comfortable attending live Mass, are we making time to keep the Lord’s day holy? Are we making time to attend devotions such as Stations of the Cross and Vespers that are offered every week? Are we reading the scriptures and other spiritual materials to nourish and guide us? Are we making time for our family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers, especially those who are dealing with difficult situations or are lonely and isolated? Are we doing what we can to help the poor? Are we challenging ourselves to move at least a little bit outside our comfort zones? Our new parish has over 200 homebound members. We are responsible for outreach to two care facilities (Harbour Assisted Living and ManorCare, Greentree). We have had nearly 80 deaths in our parish since last November. If you would like to discuss ways you might help with socially distant ministry or are willing to be involved when we gradually open our direct ministries again, please contact Laura at (412) 857-5356 or [email protected]. Share the gift of time that you have been given!

S *MASS INTENTIONS

The Mass book is only open through the second week in April and all the Masses have been filled with intentions. Fr. Grecco and the clergy team are currently watching COVID and attendance trends to discern what Mass schedule will best suit our parish. Announcements will be

made in the bulletin and at Masses when the Mass book is opened again. We appreciate your patience. *DROP BOX There is a locked and labeled drop box in Holy Family Hall at the Carnegie site where parishioners may leave envelopes, Mass stipends, or anything that requires the staff’s attention. The box is located on the wall to the right of the double doors that lead into the Parish Administration Center.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM 276) permits incense to be used at the following times during Mass: - At the entrance procession to incense the altar and the cross.

- For the proclamation of the Gospel.

- During the Offertory to incense the offerings, the altar, the cross, the priest, and the people.

- At the elevation of the host and the chalice after the Consecration. Incense is often used at funerals, especially to incense the remains of the deceased during the Final Commendation. The instrument that is used is called a thurible or a censer which contains burning charcoal. Incense grains or

powder is placed on top of the charcoal with a small spoon which releases the fragrance and smoke. We use incense to venerate and sanctify, and to add to the solemnity of the Mass. It is often associated with our prayers rising to heaven (Psalm 141 and Revelation 8:3). In the early centuries, it also had a very practical purpose- it was used to freshen up the smell of churches that were filled with people that did not bathe regularly the way we do today!

If you cannot attend our parish vigil, you can learn more and/or sign up for another time by visiting the Pittsburgh campaign:

Take part on our vigil day:

Join our St. Raphael the Archangel Parish family during Lent at the annual vigil outside Planned Parenthood. Our parish has pledged to pray between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24. We witness and pray peacefully for innocent preborn babies to have a chance to live, for women in crisis pregnancies to have the support they need to choose life, and for our government and society to work toward a culture of life in which the most vulnerable members are cherished and loved as our Creator loves them. We need to fill the entire four hour shift, and any amount of time you can give is appreciated. Please contact Laura at (412) 857-5356 or [email protected] to sign up for a time.

REMEMBER TO

Daylight Savings Time Returns Sunday, March 14, at 2:00 a.m.

3RD SUNDAY OF LENT Many prefer a “create as you go” approach to life where laws and protocols primarily exist to secure and protect liberties rather than dictate and outline proper and right behavior. There are no real benchmarks for acceptable ethical and moral behavior, with a “you can’t tell me what to do” attitude prevailing. Parents are even limited in what they can request of their children, and dealing with threatening behaviors, especially from adults, are a challenge as well. Acceptable and expected conduct seems to amount to safeguarding each other’s space rather than increasing awareness of necessary relationships that require a more refined and higher response.

We have lost our axis to the world of “anything goes” and no longer see the Ten Commandments as practical and wise guideposts to effective living. We live on “relativism island” where only a possible suggestion to “love and do not harm” may be the only standard able to be preached. While Jesus most certainly emphasized love above anything else, it was never about warm fuzzy feelings or halfhearted humanitarian efforts. The love of which Jesus spoke establishes an intimate connection with God, neighbor, self, and creation. Because this love, who is God Himself, is at the foundational core of our lives, it demands actions and attitudes that serve to build up, increase, and free up those relationships. Love requires proper conduct. Preserving and enhancing these love centered relationships is at the heart of the Ten Commandments (and the Beatitudes) and the reason for Jesus’ display of anger in the temple.

The Ten Commandments can save the world from turmoil and conflict by instilling basic moral and relational principles within us. They also hold a healthy sense of sin in balance and always remind us of our relationship with God and the freedom God offers. Our faith preserves these jewels of truth that we often look beyond, dismiss altogether, or seek to remove from public view. Human beings can be so arrogant at times. Our Lenten journey, especially when embarked upon with sincerity and resolve, can restore all of our essential relationships. When we get absorbed in life’s preoccupations and demands, things can quickly get distorted and we can find ourselves way off track. In short, we find ourselves in sin. Humanity is losing a sense of both grace and sin. We need both to understand what is real and true. Until we do, the oppressive systems and ideologies that hurt so many will never change. We will never change. We are grateful for those courageous souls who willingly embrace the conversion and hard work Lent demands and stand against antiquated systems and ideologies. They give us hope that all is not lost. ©LPi

CLASSROOM CHRONICLES Each week we will highlight the amazing things that are going on in our classrooms here at St. Margaret of Scotland School.

MR. SEAN BLACK – KINDERGARTEN – 8TH GRADE SPANISH / 5TH – 8TH COMPUTERS: For Spanish in grades Kindergarten & 1st, we are learning about translating the seasons. We are also doing a project where we count all the way to 100 in Spanish! The classes for grades 2nd – 8th are continuing their work on Duolingo, an online Spanish program, where they are learning words and phrases to help them with interactions with family, at work, and simple ways to share information. In computer class we are completing our activity involving apps on Google, where students create a slideshow presentation and share them with the class.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK SERVICE PROJECT During Catholic Schools Week our Student Council wanted to do a service project to show appreciation to our Frontline Heroes —all the individuals who have worked so hard during the pandemic for us. We are so grateful for all you do; thanks so much! All the students at St. Margaret of Scotland School put together treat bags for them. They all loved their treats. Our PTG sponsored our service project for our Frontline Heroes.

The PreK-3 classes at SSJ Preschool had a fun “snow day” at school. The kids who stay for Lunch Bunch were able to bring their snow clothes and sleds and had a blast playing outside with their friends. They went sledding, threw snowballs at their teachers, and built snowmen.
