FROM THE EDITOR
it means to work as a family and succeed. It is truly amazing what they have accomplished as a team.
With this issue all but finished, we are gearing up for an exciting Spring and the Blackout Jackpot 4 being held March 18-20th in Loveland, Colorado. Be sure to check out all of the show’s info on pages 239-244 or online at theshowtimesmagazine.com/blackout4.
Before hitting save and sending this baby to bed, on behalf of my family, I want to thank everyone for voting The Showtimes as the Best of the Barns Best Livestock Show Publication for the second year in a row. We are beyond humbled by the recognition from our peers. The Showtimes has blessed us with the opportunity to meet and cover the best people and industry. The people we get to work with on a daily basis will never know how much they mean to us.
God Bless and See You Soon!
Lisa Reid, Owner/Editor
itting down to write this Editor’s note, I had every intention to inspire. It was going to start with a powerful statement, followed by my two cents on how to rule the world. What
followed was me looking at the screen for far too long and realizing that the pages of this March/April 2016 Sire Edition of the Showtimes will do the talking.
This issue of The Showtimes is always a fun one. Not only is it a great resource to reference for industry leading Sires, it highlights all of the big moments from top shows such as the National Western and Fort Worth. This issue also falls at a time where people are really starting to gear up for this next year by spending every weekend at a jackpot. With that, not only does it include numerous show results, it also advertises multiple jackpots coming up this spring.
One feature you will not want to miss is our Hall of Fame on page. 56. This month’s inductees encompass what

Brock Welshans has always had a deep passion for the cattle industry but never thought his childhood dream of owning his own cattle operation would become a reality.
“I knew from a young age that I loved cows. That was the only thing I really cared about,” he said.
In his early years, Brock studied show cattle magazines to learn all he could about genetics. At the age of 10, he was picking the bulls he wanted to use on his family’s breeding females. And while they didn’t have a lot of money, Brock used everything he learned to improve his family’s herd.
“The most I ever spent on a steer was probably $1,000. We always just bought heifers,” Brock said.
At 12, his dad drove him to his first clipping and fitting job, and by the age of 14, he started buying and selling show calves.
“I would call people up and say, ‘Hey, you were looking for this or that, and I found one’.”
Brock always hoped it would become a career for him but didn’t ever believe it would.
“When I was a teenager, I didn’t have a clue what the industry was really like. Now, I do,” he said. “But, I always had a passion for learning about it. I lived and breathed cattle, and then as I got older, I lived and breathed the business.” At 27 years old, his story is largely still unwritten, but the future looks bright.
In 2006, Brock and his wife Krissa met at a cattle sale. He was helping manage the sale, and Krissa and her brothers were consigning calves in the sale. Some might say that the rest is history.
Krissa grew up on a large crop farm in Marlette, Mich. When she was about nine years old, her family purchased a couple head of cattle, but it wasn’t until she was around eleven that she and her brothers became more serious about entering the industry. Being homeschooled allowed them to grow the operation, and by the time she was 18 and her twin brothers were in college, they had built a herd of 200 cows.
Brock and Krissa married in 2010 and currently reside near where Krissa grew up.
Brock worked for Krissa’s family for five years and then for a dairy equipment supplier for two years while selling cattle on the side.
It wasn’t until a Sunday morning conversation at a cattle show in December 2013 that Brock and Krissa realized his side cattle business could become full time. While it has been challenging at times, they’ve never looked back.
“When I quit my job, I knew what had to be done,” said Brock. “I just had to keep doing what I was doing, but on a bigger scale.”
They started with a $20,000 loan from Greenstone Farm Credit Services and have built their operation to what it is today.
Krissa currently works full time from home as Staff Editor for Feedstuffs magazine, an agribusiness publication. Her income helps pay the bills as the cattle business grows.
“The business has sustained itself as it has grown and as we’ve invested, which has been a relief, since we had to build it from the ground up,” said Krissa.
Owning a small business means a lot of sacrifices,

ANS she added.
The key for their operation has been to earn income year-round and not just during their busiest season.
But, even during the busy season—August to March—when Brock works from dawn to past dark, he has never regretted the decision.
“Now, I don’t believe anything is impossible,” he said.
The Program
According to Brock, “Brock Welshans Show Cattle” is just their business name.
“We’re really ‘Brock Welshans Cattle’ because we are selling breeding stock—bulls, heifers, and cows—show cattle, semen, and embryos,” he said. “We do more than just show cattle. Some of what is sold may not be show cattle quality, but the end goal is to produce show animals.”
Currently, through raising, buying and selling, or selling cattle on consignment, about 100 head move through their place annually. They consistently run about 20 brood cows and promote a small battery of bulls.
“I have a genuine interest in helping other people produce better cattle. The bulls we are pushing have something to offer the industry,” Brock said.
Trade Secret pg. 45 is one of the latest bulls promoted by their operation. He’s a lower-birthweight option with an extremely rich, maternal pedigree. A son of Frisky Whiskey and out of a GCC Wizard first-calf heifer, Brock said he offers more shape, volume, and stoutness than your traditional maternal-bred sires in a moderate, good-looking package.
“For a bull that combines these qualities, he’s unique
to the industry,” Brock said.
They also promote Southern Charm pg. 47, a Hereford-marked club calf bull that is as structurally sound, square, and soft as they come, according to Brock. “He’s extremely square and smooth, with an extra shot of hair.”
It doesn’t matter whether you are raising Hereford influence or crossbred cattle; Brock said Southern Charm is something producers can use to generate high-quality club calves.
“I’ve talked to a lot of people who tell me they’re not sure Southern Charm would fit in their program without Hereford or Hereford-colored cattle, but that isn’t a prerequisite for this bull. Color is in. If we’re trying to make high-quality show steers, this bull is naturally built to get it done,” he said.
The first calf crops for both bulls are due in the spring of 2016.
“As we make advancements in our operation, our goal is to utilize the best cattle. I don’t care what color they are or what breed they are; they just have
to be good,” Brock said.
At this point, what the operation will become is unknown.
“I hope that we will continue to grow so we can support our business and our family, but I also hope to achieve success with our own genetics,” he said.
For now, there are still a lot of things that limit their operation.
“We don’t own our own place yet, and we sometimes think our business would grow leaps and bounds if we lived somewhere more centrally located, but no clear doors have opened for us,” said Krissa.

Additionally, they only have one part-time employee who helps them during the busy season.
“At this point, I can only take on so much,” said Brock.
As far as the future, both Brock and Krissa have faith that everything will work out.
“Starting a small business with nothing but a small loan and building it as your finances allow involves a lot of patience, perseverance, and perspiration,” said Krissa. “Honestly, it’s scary at times, but we take baby steps and hope that each one is the right decision.”
They also know that they wouldn’t be where they are today without having a place to rent from her family or without a loan officer taking a chance on them.
Still, having numerous online sales through Caldwell-Willoughby Sales and using Facebook to promote their program has really propelled their business to where it is today.
“Even if people haven’t bought from us, there are so many that have started to follow us or look for our name because of the sales,” Brock said.
Bigger Purpose
Utilizing good genetics and helping producers improve their herds is rewarding. Selling show cattle is also rewarding, especially if the customers do well. But, for Brock and Krissa, there were days when they wondered what the bigger purpose of the business was.
“Building a business and seeing a return on investment is encouraging, but it’s all monetary,” said Krissa. “Life is about making an impact.”
As the business has grown, the purpose has become more obvious. “It’s important for us to have a business that’s based on certain fundamentals—honesty, integrity, etc.,” said Brock. “Ultimately, it’s about the people, not
the cattle. We’re trying to be good examples and mentors to young people, but it’s about more than that: We’re trying to be a light to all of the people around us.”
Not only has the business expanded, but so has their reach.
“We’ve been so fortunate to meet great people all across
the U.S. that have seen something in our program and put their trust in us,” said Krissa. “There have been moments when a huge opportunity has opened for us and we are just in awe. For example, having this opportunity to share our story here is a huge blessing for us.”
For Brock and Krissa, the journey hasn’t been without challenges, but the progress they’ve made and the people they’ve met in the past three years far outweigh the times when they’ve been discouraged.
“I’ve learned that it’s not about how popular you are or how many banners you win; it’s about fulfilling a purpose,” said Brock. •

The Brandon Horn family has a long connection with raising cattle and showing livestock. Even though Jagger Horn began showing steers in 2010, the tradition goes much farther back than that. Two of Jagger’s great-grandfathers and both of Jagger’s grandfathers were heavily involved in the raising of cattle and
livestock showing. Now, Jagger, his father and the rest of the family are carrying on the family tradition.
In February of 2015, Jagger and “The General” received the Grand Champion award at San Angelo Livestock
Show and Rodeo. Then, within the next week, Jagger and “White Hammer” won San Antonio Livestock Show. The excitement continued in January of 2016 when Jagger and his calf “Moses” were selected as the Reserve Grand Champion at the National Western in Denver, Colorado. Most recently, Jagger and “Big Boy” won the Grand Champion honors at the Fort Worth Stock Show.
Winning is always exciting, but some wins hold a special meaning. This was the case at the National Western in January. It had been exactly 30 years since Brandon Horn and his calf “Spot” had won Grand Champion at the National Western. This year’s win for Jagger brought

back some precious and painful memories for the Horn family. The Denver show win in 1986 for Brandon came less than a year after his father and mentor, Larry, unexpectedly passed away at the Oklahoma Youth Expo. So the National Western has always had a special place in the Horn family history. Jagger getting to follow in his father’s footsteps was very special for both he and his father.
Brandon, Brek, Jagger (14) and Aven (10) continue the family tradition by owning and operating Horn Livestock. Both Brandon’s, father, Larry Horn and Brek’s father, Bill Binder were agriculture science teachers. Brek and Brandon raised and showed cattle while growing up. They even competed against each other before they knew each other. After they were grown, they met each other at a stock show. Jagger has a banner in his room that he inherited from his great- grandfather, Lawrence Binder, from the 1940
Fort Worth Fat Stock Show. Times may have changed but the family has not. They are still very heavily rooted in agriculture.
Horn Livestock, just south of Anson, Texas is truly a family business. Brandon keeps
busy with around 250 cows. Brek does the bookkeeping and financial end of
the business when not working at the barn. The kids work with their cattle daily and are involved in sports and church activities. Both children have college in their future. Jagger already owns some cows and wants to continue
the family business. Aven is not as sure with her goals for the future
yet. However, both college degrees will more than likely be agriculture related.
Even though the work is long and hard, Jagger and Aven both enjoy showing cattle and are looking forward to continuing the family tradition. •

Ihave been showing cattle since I was about 4, and I’m so thankful that this is what I have grown up doing. Being able to get to do this with my dad is a blessing. I definitely get to bond with my dad in the barn, it’s great to share the same passion and work together to reach our biggest goals like Denver. This year was our 7th year going to the National Western Stock Show. We had a few successful years, but never reached the ultimate goal, to win, and it drove me to work even harder for the next year. The whole time we had Remi we knew we would take him to Denver, so every time I worked with him I knew what the ultimate goal was, and it was such a surreal feeling when all that work paid off. I was definitely in shock when I won, and when my dad came down and people were congratulating me, my emotions were uncontrollable. I had accomplished the biggest goal of my show
career. It made me really realize how many people are so supportive and encouraging, and I couldn’t be more grateful. I never could have accomplished this without the support and help of my family and friends. It’s been a blessing and an experience that I will never forget. •

ONE OF THEGREATESTEXPERIENCES
Blake enjoys working in the barn and going to shows across the country meeting new people and being around friends. The National Western is such a special show with great tradition that everyone wants to win.
Just having a pig in the hunt was a great thrill, let alone being chosen as the Grand Champion. Winning the National Western was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I will cherish the memory forever. I want to thank everyone that helped me win the National Western Stock Show and also the ones that helped me along the way. •

The 2016 Auction of the Junior Livestock Champions sets a Stock Show record with the top eight champion animals posting total sales of $412,000. The standing room only crowd hollered as the Grand Champion Steer sold for $117,000, the second highest bid in Stock Show history. The small animals were no small feat either. The auction started with a bang
when the Grand Champion Lamb sold for $50,000, exceeding last year’s bid by $10,000. The Grand Champion Goat sold for a record-breaking $40,000, more than doubling last year’s bid of $16,000.
The money invested supports the junior exhibitors that raised the animal as they plan for their agricultural future and college educations. In addition, a portion of the proceeds support the National Western Scholarship Trust, which funds scholarships in agriculture and rural medicine at colleges throughout Colorado and Wyoming. This year 80 students received funds to aid their education.
The top six Junior Livestock animals were auctioned off live on 9News at 6:30pm. The results of the eight champions are listed below:
• The Grand Champion Steer weighing a modest 1,344 pounds, sold for $117,000, the second highest bid in Stock Show history to Ames Construction Company. The steer was shown by 16-year-old, junior exhibitor Macey Goreteska, from Korydon, Iowa. Macey accomplished her personal goal to win at the National Western Stock Show. She plans to use the money to go to college. • Transwest Trucks, Inc. bought the Reserve Grand
Champion Steer for $70,000, shown by 14-year-old Jagger Horn from Anson, Texas. Jagger’s father won the Grand Champion Steer at the National Western in 1986.
• The Grand Champion Hog broke another record, selling for $53,000 to Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. The junior exhibitor is 15-year-old Blake Logan from Atlanta, Indiana. Blake wants to use the money for college and study agriculture business.
• The Reserve Champion Hog was sold for a record-setting $35,000 to the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and shown by 12-year-old Cole Phillips from Bullard, Texas. Cole’s future goal is to go to college and study agriculture.
• The Grand Champion Lamb went for an all-time record of $50,000 to Brannan Sand & Gravel and was shown by 11-year-old Bailee Amstutz of Richwood, Ohio, and the youngest exhibitor in the top eight.
• The Reserve Grand Champion Lamb went to Colorado Business Bank with the highest bid ever of $28,000. The junior exhibitor is 14-year-old Kailen Urban of Gotebo, Oklahoma with aspirations to attend Oklahoma State University.
• The Grand Champion Goat set a stock show record selling for $40,000 to PEI and was shown by 14-year-old Aspen Martin from Mason, Texas. Aspen would like to go to college and study at Texas A&M.
• The Reserve Grand Champion Goat shown by 14-year-old Karly Castello, from Tracy, California, was bought by the STEPS Foundation for $19,000. •

’m Melissa Grimmel of Grimmel Girls Show Cattle in Jarrettsville, Maryland. I am a Senior at Kansas State dual majoring in Agricultural Communications and Journalism, and Animal Sciences and Industry. Grimmel Girls Show Cattle goes back to 1991 when my older sisters began showing. My sisters and I have had our fair share of standing dead last in class at various
shows. Our parents did not show cattle, so it’s safe to say us girls were not born into it. We have started from the very bottom and worked our way to the top. My Dad is always busy with the large grain-farming operation and my Mom is a nurse. My family and I were fortunate enough to exhibit the 2016 NWSS Grand Champion Polled Hereford Heifer. I can’t even put into words what this win means to my family and I. Winning Denver is on every showman’s list of goals who not
only show cattle, but any livestock in general. At a time, just exhibiting at the NWSS was on my list of goals. When we began exhibiting at national shows, I was honored to be standing in the ring no matter what color ribbon I walked out with because it took us a long time to have cattle that would even be competitive on a national level. I will never forget where I came from, which is why my family and I remain eternally grateful for the enormous amount of advice and support we have received along the way from fellow breeders, without whom we wouldn’t be where we are today. Judge Tyler Cates said it best during the champion drive, “I appreciate what you guys do so much - it takes so much dedication and sometimes you have no life outside of this, but we do it because we love it.” Saying ‘thank you’ to my family will never be enough. I am beyond blessed that they support this lifestyle and we are able to work as a team. •

TIME
SThis year I had unique opportunities and eye opening experiences that I will remember forever. The show ring has played such a huge impact in my life as well as my families. From chasing those blue ribbons to
building wonderful friendships that will last a lifetime. On a daily basis I
teach young people to build a love for agriculture at the junior college and on the side run my family’s cowherd.
This year I was asked to sort at the National Western Stock
Show. Growing up, going to that show, was always a highlight in my
life. At a young age I remember always walking in the coliseum and looking around at the large crowd that swarmed around the show ring. Now I was asked to judge the prospects heifers
and it was such a humbling experience at which time I was lost for words. That ring has changed many lives’ including mine. If you walk out of there with a purple banner or just a ribbon no one ever forgets the National Western Stock Show. So having the opportunity and being on the other side was an eye opening experience.
Then a month later I traveled to Iowa knowing that state, growing up, was the best of the best. Judging the Iowa Beef Expo gave me more of appreciation for the breeders as well as the exhibitors in Iowa. The show was so incredibly competitive with the quality of cattle that walked in that ring. To have such a prestigious show with all exhibitors from the same state shows, what a great program they have. To be asked to judge any show no matter where it is a great opportunity, but to be asked to judge the National Western and Iowa Beef Expo was an honor. •

At press time, Rachael Buzanowski of Snowshoe Cattle Co. in Montana is on her way to the NJCAA Indoor Track Meet in Winston-Salem, NC. Buzanowski is a Sophmore competing on the Butler Community College team in Pole Vault. Since starting with the team in Spring of 2015, Rachael has broken the school record 5 times! Her current record with Butler is 12 ft. This also earned her the NJCAA Region VI Championship, and for a time, the number one ranking in the nation. She has been neck & neck for that ranking and hopes to regain that honor on March 4th. Rachael’s experience in showing her Hereford Cattle and her sheep have definitely taught her the importance of hard work, perseverance, and have developed her No-Quit attitude. She strives for the Purple not just in the show ring, but in the “Pit” as well. So far she has earned All-American honors once, the Region 6 Championship twice, and Academic All-American honors with her 4.0. Best of Luck at Nationals Rachael!

The performance of our livestock judging team at the National Western reflects the quality and dedication of our students both current and in the past. The ability of the students to think critically and then orally justify their rankings in a high-pressure environment is what makes livestock judging such a wonderful and beneficial event.I was extremely proud of our entire team. Winning both the livestock and Carload contest with 10 different students shows the talent and depth of the students and their dilligence in achieving their goals.

MESSAGE
BREAKTIME H
ow many of you have done anything of substance with a plan that just didn’t turn out quite like you thought or anything like you thought? May I share a few thoughts with you about my winter that wasn’t what I intended?
In the world of being a pastor there is what we call a Sabbatical. This is an extended “Break Time” that can be used to refresh, renew and recharge. Last fall our church board implemented the idea of me taking a 6-week sabbatical from December 20-February 1st. Our 6 weeks were to disengage us from the rigorous schedule of being the pastor of this growing church called Lima First Assembly of God!
Our goal was to relax, do some stuff we normally push back and have some extra time with our kids while off on their Christmas breaks from college.
However, Tuesday morning Dec. 15th I woke up with severe pain in my neck radiating down my arm. At first I thought it must be some crick in the neck and I would sleep it off later. The problem was, I spent all day at the hospital with a family in critical need. After spending the next couple of days in pain, on Thursday Dec. 17th I finally called the chiropractor and asked if I could be seen. His secretary who I know well said yes we can get you in Feb. 2nd, is that ok? Now this lady knows me, she always refers to me as pastor. I called her by name and said, “If I start crying on
BE CONNECTED, PLUGGED-IN, WITH GODBY PASTOR RANDY DAVIS, LIMA, OH
HOW WE MET RANDYWe met Randy Davis when we visited Lima, Ohio for Maine Junior Nationals back in 2012. He is the Winegardner family's pastor. They had asked him to give a sermon during the show. We were greatly impressed with Randy. Since then, we have listened to his sermons in our office from time to time. When Brad Winegardner came out to Colorado to judge our show we visited about having Randy write a message for our upcoming issues. We hope you enjoy his message!

the phone, will it help to get me in sooner?” Within 30 minutes she called back and said he can see you tonight.
He poked on me and moved my neck and arms for a few minutes, walked in front of me and said, “You need to text your doctor and get these three things going ASAP.” Now I don’t know about you, but I thought the reason you went to the chiropractor was to avoid heavy narcotics an orthopedic Doctors.
He goes, “Pastor, this is very serious and we need to get moving on it right away. You are severely inflamed in your neck, there is an impingement and your nerve is not happy. We have to get some steroids and pain meds so you can get some relief.” Key word was some.
As far as Friday went, I did not pick up the meds until later in the day and the one prescription had to be taken six the first day, five the second and so on. Well, because it was late I didn’t start it until Saturday. I did take pain meds as soon as I picked them up and went home to rest. They really didn’t seem to help but these steroid packs were supposed to really help with the inflammation part where I should start getting some relief in a few days. Key word is some.
So Saturday I started the medra pack? Two pills early, two in the day and two before bed. Guess what I found out that Saturday night Dec. 19th? The medication in the Medra Pack combined with pain meds kept me awake all night. I literally never slept a moment the whole night. I laid all night miserable and wide awake. I was up from Saturday at 7:00 until Sunday night at 11:00, wide-awake. This was all on what we call Christmas Sunday December 20th, the second biggest day in the church year. Thankfully day two meds kept me pretty alert as well. God got me through and most folks never noticed
a problem. On Dec. 20th after the all night episode I decided to sleep in my recliner with a travel pillow and it worked. I finally slept some. I slept there almost every night until January 25th. Over the sabbatical, I saw my chiropractor 7-8 times over a four-week period. He was kind and helpful but still very little relief. He said you need to see a specialist. Remember this is Christmas week and then New Years.
Finally, I see a specialist on January 6th. He reports, “you have two herniated disks in your neck and something is pinching your nerve. We need an injection, or a series of them, to make you well.” I asked when I could get one and he responded with, “We can get you to a guy we like on February 2nd.” There is something about that day.
While we were on sabbatical, Maressa and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary on January 27th. It was the only out of town trip we had planned. We have a time-share we can use up in Boyne Falls, Michigan. So on Monday, January 25th we got there and they had a foot of snow and the place was awesome. We checked in and went to our room and got settled. A few minutes later I knelt in front of her and began to cry and apologize for not being able to do what we had planned for our sabbatical and even this trip. She returned the emotion wishing she knew what to do to help me. It was an awesome moment we needed.
Tuesday morning, I woke up early and literally couldn’t feel my arm. Not like paralysis, like no pain almost at all. I was like what is going on? I wasn’t healed, but I wasn’t hurting like I had been. The week went great.
Some may say, big deal, you weren’t dying. To which I

say you are so right. But why did all of this happen while we were supposed to be off? Why over break time? We speculate, we rationalize and make assumptions. Maybe God knew it was the only way you would slow down! There has to be a reason for it. Let me share some truth with you:
Man Reasoning: - God will never put more on you than you can handle! - Someday you will know why! - Someday it will all make sense! - It will be ok? Hang in there!
God Reasoning: God works all things together for good to them that love Him! -Romans 8:28 My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory. -Phil 4:19 I can do all things trough Christ who gives me strength. -Phil 4:13
My sabbatical story is so minimal to what some of you are handling. It was 6 long weeks of shooting pain. It was miserable and incapacitating. It wasn’t what I planned or thought God had intended for my extended time off.
Job 42:1-4 1 Then Job replied to the LORD: 2 “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. 3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.
Here are a few things to remember when you are going through hard times. Some will never make sense or have a reason for why!
Verse 4: Some things that we face are too wonderful for me to know. Shooting pain doesn’t seem wonderful, but what if it was for some special purpose I went through all of this? Some things you can know: I know that you can do all things, no purpose of yours can be stopped!
The #1 thing I learned is this: I, Randy Davis, am totally and completely dependent on Jesus Christ for every area of my life! I also realized I need more days of rest on a regular basis! My Physical Therapist said it could all be totally stress related. Rick Warren says, “you either tell your body when it needs a break or it will tell you!”
I must have more time connected to God to hear from Him! Are you connected to God? Are you dependent on Him? Have you asked Him into your heart? Is He in control of your schedule? Don’t make Him force the issue! It is more than just being close to God by being good or coming to church. I mean connected, plugged in! Do you know Him? He can get you through anything. Our sabbatical wasn’t what I intended, but God had a plan and I remained faithful through it. Even though that was not always easy. You may never get a reason for the hard things you are facing today or have already gone through. It may never make sense. But God is there for you and wants to help you through any and all adversity that you face. Trust Him!
Now I’m going to see if I can get a couple of more weeks’ vacation in soon to make up for the six weeks that didn’t go as planned.

INIT
IATI
VEInitiative is recognizing and doing what needs to be done without being asked. When you illustrate initiative, you are taking responsibility to do the things that are waiting to be done. Applying this trait toward the duties that come with showing livestock will make a world of difference in your attitude and show career.
It’s a given; with the stock show life come never ending chores. Your animals are waiting to be fed. It’s time to wash and condition them. They constantly need to be walked and worked with so the judge can see their full potential. Results won’t come from come from procrastination or waiting until the last minute. So, take action! Don’t wait for someone to ask you to clean the pens or unload the feed. Identify each circumstance and take the necessary steps to get the job done!
When you demonstrate initiative, you will notice an increase of self-esteem, which will positively impact your performance in the show ring. Because you have taken responsibility and have an in-depth understanding of your animal, you can be confident. Imagine the value of setting a positive example for your fellow showmen or your siblings. Picture your parents’ faces when you tell them the chores are already taken care of. Having initiative will not only benefit your show career, but more importantly, it will benefit you as an individual.
WHAT IS INITIATIVE?
Do’s and Don’ts of INITIATIVE
THEWINNERSBRAND.COM
BY: WEAVER LEATHER LIVESTOCK
Assess the Situation. Stop. Take a look around you. Is there anything in your setting that requires attention? Is there trash on the floor? Could the blower hose be coiled back up? Do the fitting mats need hosed off? Always be aware of your surroundings and try your best to make yourself available for the needs of others.
Ignore Your Surroundings. It’s easy to avoid the situations you can see out of the corner of your eye. Someone else will handle it, I don’t have time right now, and Not my job, are phrases that might travel through your mind. Instead, picture every situation
as an opportunity to learn and grow. You just might receive some valuable information that will be useful at your next show or during fitting and clipping.
Take Action. It’s as simple as this: when there’s a need, be proactive. If you’re not sure how, ask someone to show you. You have the power to make things happen! Pick up the trash, coil the blower hose, spray off the mats. You’ll feel good about accomplishing things, rather than walking past them and leaving an unfinished project.
Procrastinate. Benjamin Franklin said, “Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today”. So don’t wait! Put in the effort and hard work NOW. A rewarding feeling of satisfaction will come after you’ve completed your job and have the time to reflect on it.
Self-Motivate. Only you hold the key to self-motivation. Motivated people create their own opportunities and have the ability to inspire themselves. Find the drive within yourself to take initiative. Down the road, you will be glad you did.
Wait for Inspiration. Inspire yourself! Take some time to envision the good things that can come from giving advice to a showman who is struggling or offering to carry someone’s buckets. These actions could lead to lasting relationships that have a
huge impact in your life.

The Best of
Folks I’ve always heard that time flies when you’re having fun, I just didn’t realize I was having so much fun. The days are getting longer, that means more daylight and more incentive to work on your livestock projects. Here in Oklahoma you can find a show every weekend this time of year to attend - no matter what specie you’ve chosen to learn life lessons from. It also gives me time to think about all the shows that I have had the opportunity to work or attend with the granddaughters across this great nation of ours. And, of course, that brings me around to one of my favorite things to do while on the road --- EAT! I do admit I am a creature of habit and have been accused of planning my travels around some of my favorite places to eat. With that said, I’m going to share some of my all-time favorites again; but they are spread out so it will take some time to make them all! I would appreciate suggestions from the stock show community on your favorite places to dine. My wife thinks I need to change some of my habits! Starting in Oklahoma City I have to have Jimmy’s Round Up Café & Fried Pies. This genuine home cooking place is the ultimate to take a group of stock show kids or just take the little honey out for a bite to eat. The menu here is awesome! From the burgers to the catfish, this has to be the IN place for a group of hungry stock show attendees. The prices are very affordable and the portions are very generous! Next stop on the road trip would be The Brothers Houligen in Tulsa. This is a real hole in the wall that you would drive right by and never give a second thought about stopping at. You would be passing up the opportunity to sample what was voted the second best chicken fried steak in the state of Oklahoma! Friends, this is one of the best kept secrets in Tulsa but I’m letting it out of the bag! This place is a Got To Go Place when I’m in Tulsa. I have yet to have a bad eating experience from this place and I think I’ve tried almost every item on the menu and have never been disappointed. Portions and the prices are great!
Heading north to Kansas City I have to stop at my very favorite place to eat while I’m on the road. If you’ve read my writings before you know by now that it’s got to be Strouds North. This place is hard to find but well worth the time to search it out. I think by now my pickup is trained to go there when I say the name! This is the absolute best meal I have found on the road from the chicken soup before the meal or the WORLD FAMOUS fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy served family style or one of the best steaks in the country - this place gives My wife a run for her money when it comes to putting a meal on the table!! I think I heard my pickup start up outside!! Cruising on north a little bit on I-35 brings me to Des Moines, IA. A sure enough little hole in the wall place just down the road from the fairgrounds is Now or Later. I drove by this place for years and with the urging of Shawn Piepers I finally gave it a shot, and boy was he right! This place gives Strouds some stiff competition for the best chicken livers and gizzards on the planet! The hours are a little different here “11-2 & 4-9,” but well worth it. The rest of the menu is great, it’s just hard for me to pass up something that’s not on the menu at home!! Heading east from Des Moines I end up in Springfield, IL. at Charlie Parkers Diner, home of the local entre the Horse Shoe. I had the opportunity to search this place out to partake of the Horse Shoe and was not disappointed at all. I just needed someone to help me finish it off! The portions on this thing are crazy, unless you are able to consume about three meals in one sitting you might want to start with Pony Shoe and work your way up from there ! Once again folks I’m open to suggestions for your favorite places to dine. I know you must be getting tired of mine - it’s just hard not go to the old reliable tried and true places. Remember to look us up on the Showtimes App if you’re on the road and need a place dine.

SFILL IN THE BLANKS
WE ASKED JUSTIN TO FILL IN THE BLANKS.BY JUSTIN NATHAN, NE
1. I would never...give up on a dream.
2. If I could be anyone for aday it would be...Tracy Gorsekta. I have always wanted to be able to clip and fit like him and I feel he is one of the best at changing them with how he clips them.
3. My greatest accomplishment is...breeding a pair of twins that were Grand and Reserve at the Indiana State Fair.
4. I would never go to a show without...clippers.
5. One thing I absolutely cannot stand is...bad fitted sheep legs and flank wool.
6. My biggest dream is...to raise a stud buck that will go down as a changer for the industry.
7. I can’t live without...sushi.
8. If I could meet one person it would be...Michael Jordan.
9. My favorite sports team is...the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
10. I like it when...I get to see kids buy livestock from me and I get to help them reach there dream from big to small.
11. The strangest thing I’ve everseen at a show is...someone unloading sheep from a mini van at a state fair
12. If I could only eat one thing for my entire life it would be...Chinese and sushi.
13. If I was elected President, the first thing I would do is...have the first steer show on the front lawn of the White House and give the biggest payout out ever.
14. One song I always have to jam out to is...Letter to Me by Brad Paisley.
15. If there was a new National Show, it should be located in...Nashville, Tennessee.NASHVILLE, TN

THANKYOU!
WE’RE READY FOR THE BLACKOUT JACKPOT 4!BY LAURIE REID, CO
The beginning of the year is a whirlwind of spending three busy weeks at Denver, putting together this March/April Sire Edition of the magazine and moving straight into prospect show season. This year we are eagerly getting ready for the Blackout Jackpot 4 being held March 18-20th in Loveland, Colorado!
We truly enjoy working to make the Blackout the best show in the country. Every year we incorporate new ideas, prizes and features that have never been done before to provide an experience for our exhibitors that can be found nowhere else.
Some of the highlights from The Blackout Jackpot 4 will be our Showtimes/Sullivan Supply Stall Bid-Off online with cwcattlesales.com on March 11th. The highest bidder will not only enjoy having their stall setup for them when they arrive at the show, but they will also get to take home everything after the show! All the money made in the Bid-Off will then go into our scholarship program offered to any high School senior or college student who shows at this year’s Blackout.
New this year, we will be partnering with Sullivan Supply’s Stock Show University to host a Fitting Contest for both Junior (17 and younger)
as well as Adult teams (18 and older) on Friday night, March 18th. It is going to be a tremendously fun time where teams will have the opportunity to show off their skills and win awesome prizes from Sullivan Supply.
Every year the show grows and we are excited about all of the exhibitors making the trip from across the country to Colorado to show or watch! We feel it is our duty to get
judges that represent the quality of the show as well as
the cattle they are going to sort. This
year we are proud to welcome our judges Brandon Callis (heifers) and Jim Williams
(steers).
Thank you to all of our sponsors of the
Blackout Jackpot 4! Without your support, hosting this event would not be possible. Finally, thank you to Colorado State University for teaming up with us with your annual Green & Gold Showdown that is ran simultaneously to our show on this great weekend!
Make sure you make the trip out to see all of the other unique things we are doing!
