Greetings Disciples at Luther Memorial,

What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.-T.S. Eliot

As I’m sitting in my office this morning, I’m pondering the space I am in. Our small groups have been reading together Naked Spiri-tuality by Brian McLaren. He begins this work by entreating the reader to take stock of where they are, to be very present “here.”

So, where am I? I’m in a beautiful space, stuck in be-tween places in time. You see, the days lead-ing up to Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent are traditionally days where mer-riment and joy abound, where we eat fatty foods and drink good wine.

But we “eat, drink, and be merry” because, as Dave Matthew’s so right-fully stole from the writer of Ecclesiastes, “tomorrow we die”.

Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent, though, is not a time when we contem-plate death, but rather contemplate mortality as a whole. We live within boundar-ies, bookends, in this frame of existence. God promises another day after the last breath; this is most certainly true. But if we are to truly live in this time frame, in the here-and-nowness of today, we must take stock of what we have for the journey.

The liturgical season of Lent helps us to take stock of what we have for the jour-ney of life. I really want to invite you to experience all of Lent this year. We’ll be hav-ing Sunday morning services where a new sermon series will be given highlighting Lu-ther’s Small Catechism and how that can aid is in our Christian faith and life.

On Tuesday evenings you can join for simple soup and sim-ple song, as we praise God with Evening Prayer.

And finally, our season culminates with the Triduum, or “The Great Three Days” where we celebrate the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday, where we solemnly pon-der the crucifixion on Good Friday, and where we celebrate light springing from dark-ness with the Great Vigil on Holy Saturday. Please make plans to attend all three of those services to get the breadth and depth of the Christ story in one weekend!

You know, in gathering in these small groups (which will continue into the spring in new forms), I’ve come to recognize anew what accountability comes with gathering together, to “take stock” together.

This Lent, let’s take stock together.

See you in church…bring your Bibles,Pr. Tim…

YOUTH NEWSHello Church!

We’re nearing some final deliberations for our Summer Trip! This year’s trip will include the likes of high adventure, team building, com-

munication and trust. But keep in mind this trip is bigger than crazy games and activities, there will be time to build friendships, relax and experience a week centered around God, faith and what it means to know that YOU play an important part in God’s plan. I’m pumped!

But in the meantime, we just kicked off The 30 Hour Famine! The Famine is an event put on by World Vision that raises awareness and funds to aid those who are starving. We will literally be Jesus’ hands and feet through

this event! We will be participating this year on the weekend of April 13th. Please check out the 30 Hour Famine video for more information on the Famine and why this is such an important event to be participat-ing in. We will have it playing at the back of the church on laptops every Sunday until April 13th. The Youth will be presenting more information

concerning global, national and local hunger on Sunday mornings as well. Luther Memorial Church Youth Group…

A CREED to believe in

A COMMUNITY to belong to

A CALL to live out

A HOPE to hold on to

Youth Group meeting times will be on Monday nights opposite of Confirmation nights from 7-8:30pm. March meeting dates are 3/12 and 3/26.

MUSICAL MUSINGS

Guiding Principles

Called into Community by Jesus Christ:

We Believe Prayer is Essential,

Encouragement Fuels Ministry,

Questioning is Healthy, All are Invited to Engage,

God is Speaking, We are Called to Act

Who Are We to Lead? We stand in front of you every Sunday and "lead worship." We read scrip-ture, play music and even preach on the Gospel... but what qualifies us?This is a question that I've thought about quite a bit over the years. As I come up on an anniver-sary of my time at LMC, I have thought a lot about how I have changed as a person in the last ten years. I've come a long way, but I'm not done yet. God is still working in me. None of us are perfect; we never will be. None of us claim to stand in front of you on Sunday mornings (or Mondays, or Tuesdays...) without sin, but we are called to stand be-fore you as witnesses and recipients of God's grace and mercy. God gifted each of us (including you) with talents that can and should be used to serve Him. Some of us have gifts that are more visible; others have gifts that make a quiet differ-ence, but we are all called to serve. I was called to serve in worship on Sundays in music. Pe-ter, the apostle, was called to be the rock of the church (Matthew 16:18). Peter wasn't perfect. He knew Jesus, he recognized Him as the Son of God (Mark 8:29)... and then he denied Christ in the hours before Christ's death (Mark 14:66-72)... What qualified Peter for his appointment as the rock? What qualifies all of us to serve in the church and in the community today? I believe that God called us to be His mouthpiece, hands and feet to show that God's plans are so great that not even our imperfections can hinder the ultimate work He is doing in the world. He chose us to serve so that we can be amazed at who God is and filled with thanksgiving at the opportunity and call to serve. We will continue to be flawed, I hope we will continue to grow and seek forgiveness and righ-teousness, and we will continue to serve. I am thankful and humbled by this opportunity.

NOTEWORTHY NEWSOur "Lenten Discipline" this year is giving to the Malaria Campaign by the ELCA.

Please prayerfully consider contributing to this very important campaign. Last August our Church-wide Assembly voted to raise $15 million by 2015 to provide insecticide treated mosquito nets, in-

sect repellant, medication and comprehensive health education for people in the Global South. It only costs about $10 to provide a bed net and training to protect against malaria-carrying mosquitos.

In the pews you will find special offering envelopes for the malaria cam-paign. Please be generous. Also, take a few moments to watch the malaria campaign

video in the back of the church during Lent – it’s just 4 minutes long.

3/29 Comfort me with Apples by Ruth Reichl

In this delightful sequel to her bestseller “Tender at the Bone”, the beloved food writer Ruth Reichl returns with more tales full of love, life, humour and marvellous meals. Ruth Reichl’s pursuit of good food and good company leads her to New York and China, France and Los Angeles. She cooks and dines with world-famous chefs and the three star aristocracy of French cuisine, and her accounts of these meetings range from the madcap to the sublime. She shares some of her first recipes so readers can make the Dry-Fried Shrimp she first tasted in China, or the Dacquoise served at the end of a magi-cal visit to a Paris bistro. Reichl also shares the intimacies of her personal life in a style so honest and warm that readers will feel they are enjoying a cosy dining-table con-versation with a friend. In “Comfort Me With Apples”, Reichl again demonstrates her inimitable ability to combine food writing, humour and memoir into an art form.

Food Pantry Opportunities

There has been much talk in the past couple months about starting up a new food pantry in our area. As Pastor Tim works with area clergy and the alderman on logistics there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved. This proj-

ect will NOT be successful without the help and support of others. Lauren Gray and Heidi Bush have put together vol-unteer opportunities in the coming months to gather information from local pantries. It will be beneficial to our project to find out what has worked and what has not in these other pantries as well as getting a hands-on look at operations.

Monday March 19th, 8:30am-noon, Common Pantry Produce Distribution (WE NEED 8 MORE PEOPLE FOR THIS!)Wednesday, April 11th, 5-8pm, Common Pantry Food Distribution, (5 more people needed)

Tuesday April 17th, 5-8pm, Ravenswood Food Pantry, (6 more people needed)Lakeview Food Pantry, TBA

Church news

New Sermon Series: Κατηχισμός “Catechism literally means 'to sound down to the ears.' The Catechism was meant to be the

teaching that pointed you to Jesus between Sundays, to be the rock through the storm of the week. Lent is traditionally a time for learning, re-learning, deconstructing, and re-constructing

faith. During this Lenten season we’ll be focusing on the Catechism and hearing again how it might be used in the lives of the faithful as we move toward baptism at the Easter Vigil.”

Triduum or "Three Days"-What?The "Triduum," also called "The Great Three Days" consists of Maundy Thursday, Good Fri-day, and the Great Vigil of Easter (Holy Saturday). These three days are the most ancient

feasts of the church, and on these days we celebrate the breadth and depth of the Christ story through remembering his commandments, pondering his crucifixion, and joyfully celebrat-ing his resurrection (with a champagne reception, no less!). Make plans to attend services all of these days (childcare will be provided), to bring Lent full circle around to Easter joy!

Greetings!

On Friday, March 2nd we will be participating in a World Day of Prayer service. This year’s theme is ‘Let Justice Prevail’ and the service has been written by the women of Malaysia. Please mark your calendars and plan to sing and pray with our ecumenical community. Men are welcome. There will be an offering taken and the money will be sent to ‘World Day of Prayer – USA’. They distribute the funds in the form of grants. Checks should be made out to ‘WDP USA’. There will be a reception following the service. If you plan to attend and are able to bring a snack to share please contact me.

On Saturday, March 10th we will be traveling to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights for the annual Lutheran/Catholic Women’s Day of Prayer. It begins at 8:45 am with registration and coffee. The keynote speaker is Valora Starr who works in the churchwide office of the Women of the ELCA. She develops and coordinates pro-grams, events, and conversations that involve discerning God’s call, understanding God’s gifts, and responding to God’s presence in our lives. Fr. Jerry Jacobs will be the homilist. The morning concludes with lunch. The cost for the day is $20. Contact me if you are interested in attending and want to carpool. We will leave LMC around 8 am.

Coming up in April look for details regarding our first ever chili cook-off competi-tion which is being held on Saturday, April 21st. We will need cooks and judges so plan to at-tend. Also in April, on Sunday the 22nd we will observe a Thankoffering Service.

Our five groups continue to meet on a monthly basis. The contact information for the lead-ers of the groups can be found at the end of this article. If any of these groups inter-est you, please feel free to check us out, either as a regular member or one time only.

Also, due to the death of our sister in Christ, Bernadine Zommer, we are in need of someone to be in charge of the prayer requests for those that are notified via phone. If you would like to join either the phone or email prayer group, please let me know. Also, please contact me if you are willing to be the phone group coordinator. It’s not hard!

Wishing Health & Happiness to all,Linda Miranda, PresidentWomen of the ELCA at LMC
