Welcome

You might have been lucky enough to meet the UK Recruitment team (aka

Neil and Tracey) already at a careers convention, an open day or perhaps you

have seen 1 of our many presentations. Alternatively, you may still have the

privilege of meeting us in person to come! Between us we work all over the UK,

in this last year we have been up to Shetland down to Exeter and lots of places in

between, not to mention all round Northern Ireland. It’s only by doing a job like ours you

really realise what a stunning country we live in and we get to meet such cool people as well!

Anyway enough about us for just now, we have put this edition together to give you a bit of an update

about all the exciting things we have had happen at the University of Stirling..

So read on and enjoy . . . .

Studying at Stirling

It’s that time of year where many of you may have to think about what you

want to do after the Summer Holidays, especially if you are choosing

subjects to study. If you are thinking of going to University you will really

need to make sure you do your research and double check all entry

requirements, not to mention the required subjects. If you are in the

middle of doing this and find it a bit confusing or just looking for

clarification you should give us a shout and the Student Recruitment and

Admissions team will be more than happy to give you any help and advice

you need.

Students just love Stirling

Each year there is a survey carried out across the UK of almost all

Universities called The National Student Survey where current students get

to say what they really think about where they study. The survey looks at

everything from teaching standards to the investment in facilities, from

employability to enjoyability. Stirling consistently get s a really high score

in this (one of the highest in the country!) but we are not happy with just

settling for this we always want to do better so check out the results and

you can see how we do.

One thing that always comes through on the results from our students is

the fact they feel part of a community by studying here and a lot of this is

down to the very proactive Students’ Union we have. They organise and

help all our clubs and societies grow and provide our students with a range

of opportunities to get involved and meet new people. To see their new

programme of events for the upcoming semester click here.

Academic Bio

Emma Lyons

Teaching Fellow

School of Sport

Originally, I came to Stirling as an undergraduate student in 2000. I then

undertook an MSc in Sports Studies whilst acting as a Teaching Assistant in the

School of Sport. On completion I began the role that I now hold. My main

responsibilities focus on helping students to learn subject-related material. I co-

ordinate the 1st and 3rd semester Sports Studies modules and contribute to

teaching on a variety of other Sports and Leisure Studies modules. My particular

subject interests lie in the areas of Sports History, Ethics in Sport, and the

Psychology of Sport.

As Open Day Officer, I get to know students from the first time they visit the

University as I am Open Day Officer and continue to see them when they start

as I am also part of the Academic Advisory Team. I help students to choose the

modules and degree pathway that will inspire them and enable them to gain a

career they wish to pursue. This compliments another of my responsibilities as

Careers Advisor, co-ordinating with the Sports Development Service and

Careers Development Centre so that we can provide guidance, extra-curricular

qualifications and relevant work experience.

I am also drawn to the challenge of competing and coaching and am lucky that

my job also includes coaching the University Women’s Football Team. As with

all university sports teams there is a regular turn-over of players and due to

this, one of the challenges is ensuring team cohesion and continuity exists. As

well as strong performances, we also aim to embrace this particular challenge

every season by developing a strong sense of team spirit.
