    ROAD HOUSE

MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO (1988)Here is a childrens film made for the world we should live in,rather than the one we occupy. A film with no villains. No fightscenes. No evil adults. No fighting between the two kids. Noscary monsters. No darkness before the dawn. A world that isbenign. A world where if you meet a strange towering creaturein the forest, you curl up on its tummy and have a nap.

PRINCESS MONONOKE (1997)Full of myth, magic, creation, and destruction this stands asone of director Hayao Miyazakis crowning achievements. Teepic struggle of nature against human industry is shown herethrough the eyes of a young man caught up in the middle. Tegods of the forest are just tr ying to protect their home. Tehumans invading the woods are just looking for a little break.

SPIRITED AWAY (2001)Ostensibly, this is the story of a girls voyage into the spirit

world to rescue her parents, who, in typical idiotic adultfashion, drive on a road where they shouldnt drive, eat foodthey shouldnt eat and end up getting turned into pigs. But thispremise is, as usual, mainly an excuse for Miyazakis imaginationand id to free-associate, channeling and repurposing elements ofEastern and Western mythology,

    The Movie Interruption:JERSEY GIRL

Sunday Cinema Club:AT CLOSE RANGE (1986, 35mm)Te phrase criminally underseen has already grown tired,so please allow me to say it just this once about this movie.

Afterall, it has Christopher Walken looking dangeroulsy good ina mustache and aviator glasses paired with a young Sean Pennas his witless son in what is a rather harrowing crime dramafrom director James Foley. Brad Jr., sick of sticking it out withhis mother and her new boyfriend, flees to his criminal fathersplace. Finding the lifestyle to be glamourous from the outside,he wants in, but doesnt quite have the meanness of heartand spirit that his father has to pull it off. Brad Sr. senses this

weakness and sends a very nasty message to his son so he mightfear for his life if he ever snitches.

    Broadway Brunch: CABARET (1972)

Set in Berlin in 1931, this Bob Fosse film tells the story of SallyBowles, a bohemian performer wrestling with life and love.Minnellis spirit and powerful pipes fill the screen with passion, and Joel Grey is positively electric as the MC. In addition todaring musical numbers, this film bravely explores issues ofsexual identity as well as the shifting culture of 1930s Germany.

Cinema Cocktails: CASINO (1995)Tey had it all, they ran the show, and it was paradise...while itlasted. Beneath the glitzy and glamour of the Las Vegas facadethere lives a filthy underbelly of greed, deception, money, power, and murder. Robert De Niro stars as Ace, a mobster

who moves to town to make his mark. In a town made ofmoney, Ace learns the ropes and works his way to managing theangiers. Vegas shows its ugly face and corruptions takes over.

Video Vortex: DEATH SPA (1989)Michael owns the Star Body Health Spa. Its a very futuristicplace, because the computer runs the spa. Years earlier,Michaels wheelchair-bound wife died in an inferno. oday, thespa is plagued by an unseen supernatural force, which causesgraphic gore, full-frontal nudity, and leotards to erupt in flames.

The Graveyard Shift: HENRY: PORTRAIT OF ASERIAL KILLER (1986, 35mm)Presented by Fangoria, with an introduction by

    Managing Editor Michael Gingold.

Michael Rooker stars in this truly terrifying examination of abrutal murderer as he selects and executes victims, capturingthe crimes on videotape. Te release of this film was delayed byseveral years, and went on to become very controversial.

PSYCHO-PASS (2014)Welcome to a world where just thinking about a crime isenough to make you guilty. Bad intentions can no longer behidden, and the police know exactly which tainted minds areabout to cross over to the wrong side of the law. Te greatequalizer in the war on thugs is the Dominator, a futuristic

weapon that can read minds and assess the risk that a citizenwill turn criminal. Cops work in teams made up of Enforcersand Inspectors. Enforcers take out the bad guys, Inspectorsstop their partners from going rogue, and the all-powerful SibylSystem keeps a watchful eye on us all.

St. Patricks Day Screening:THE QUIET MAN (1952)

John Wayne stars as Sean Tornton, an Irish Americanreturning to his homeland after accidentally killing a man inthe boxing ring. He purchases his birth home only to find hehas inadvertantly gained an enemy in Red Will Danaher, a local

threatens to change the laws of science as we know it. Featuringa hilarious script and a soundtrack from Black Flag, Circle Jerks,Iggy Pop and Fear, plus enough zoned out new wave maniacs tofill a mental ward.

Movie Party: ROAD HOUSE (1989, 35mm)Only in complete darkness surrounded by strangers can theteachings of Dalton be truly understood. Most importantly: Benice. Tat is, until it is time to not be nice, in which case youpersonally eliminate half a towns population. Here we havePatrick Swayze as a bouncer with a national reputation as thebest brought to the city of Jasper to clean up a club called theDouble Deuce.

    23CHINATOWN

    Action Pack:CLUE QUOTE-ALONG

ALPHAVILLE (1965)Jean-Luc Godards science fiction crime drama utilizes FrenchB-movie character Lemmy Caution, here as a detective witha mission to destroy the totalitarian leader of Alphaville - asentient computer run amok. Along the way he meets Natacha, and the two fall in love as they cross an oppressive landscape

which in reality consists of carefully selected locations in Paristhat pieced together form a futuristic city.

CHINATOWN (1974)Jake Gittes is a former cop turned private detective in 1930sLos Angeles, most often employed to expose unfaithful sposes.

When he is hired to catch Hollis Mulwray in the act, he findsout after the photographs have been published that the realEvelyn Mulwray was not the one paying his bill. Hollis turns updead, and Jake starts to snoop further, winding up with a sliced

nostril as he starts to get at well-protected secrets.

CLUE QUOTE-ALONG (1985)Youve done it in the library. Youve done it in the dining room.Youve even done it with a candlestick in the kitchen. Tatsright, at one time or another, weve all killed Mr. Body. And forthis months quote-along, were celebrating our murderous ways

with CLUE, the hilarious film adaptation of the board game.Weve subtitled all of your favorite lines, so you can quip alongwith Wadsworth, scream along with Mrs. Peacock, and feel theflames on the side of your face with Mrs. White.

DIRTY HARRY (1971)A thinly veiled plot of the Zodiac Killer, DIRY HARRY wentwhere no other cop film had gone before it. It questioned theauthority and morals of law enforcement in a way that hadntbeen shown in American film. At the time everyone on Te Leftconsidered Harry a fascist while those on Te Right praised issense of jusitce, even if it was of the vigilante kind.

THE MALTESE FALCON (1941)John Hustons seminal, canonized film noir classic remains asfresh and entertaining as ever. Featuring one of the all-timegreat performances from Humphrey Bogart, this beautifullystylized and masterfully executed product of the classicalHollywood studio system is a perfect merging of art andentertainment.

MEMENTO (2000)Guy Pearce and Joey Pants shine in this Christopher Nolanstunner that tells its story all in reverse. Pearce is LeonardShelby, a man on the hunt for the man who murdered his wifeand left him with a condition that keeps him from making newmemories. Forced to live his life believing the clues he leaves forhimself, he works to bring the man responsible to justice.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959)Of all the masterful works of suspense created over the courseof his career, this is truly the quintessential Alfred Hitchcockmovie. If PSYCHO made the world aware of how frighteningshowers can be, this film introduced us to an improbablyterrifying crop duster. Te suspense is punctuated by acutelyfunny jabs throughout, elevating this mistaken identity,innocent-man-on-the-run tale to a level of total magic.

BOTTLE ROCKET (1996)Wes Andersons debut feature stars Luke and Owen Wilsonas old pals Dignan and Anthony, looking to make thingsinteresting by embarking on a life of crime. THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (2001, 35mm)What starts off as a straight story of familial betrayal, dishonestyand disappointment becomes a deeply emotional triumph. Ithas a head-turning ensemble of and is the last collaborationbetween writers Anderson and Owen Wilson. A film that

entertains, dazzles and moves, in that order, throughout. Its themovie that declared Anderson was a true cinematic force.

FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: The Series (2014)Based on the classic cult film. While on the run to Mexico, theGecko Brothers take former pastor Jacob Fuller and his childrenhostage. Using the family RV to cross the border, chaos ensues

when the group ends up at a strip club populated by vampires.Following this special premiere screening, Alamo Drafthousefounder and CEO im League will moderate a live (via Skype)Q&A with director Robert Rodriguez and various cast members

who will be in attendance at the screening.
