PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
We are sending out our invitations to parents/carers for our Program and Student Review meetings on Thursday 27 March.
It is very important that all parents/carers attend these meetings as one of most important factors influencing a student’s progress is the quality of the relationship between home and school.
Please send back the replies early so that you can secure a convenient time for your appointment.
It has come to my attention that some students are arriving to school very early in the mornings. Staff are on duty from 8.45am onwards so please keep your child safe by making sure they do not get to school before 8.45am.
The weather is starting to get colder in the mornings so everyone is asked to make sure students are wearing the school navy blue windcheater or jacket. No other coloured jackets are allowed. Students out of uniform will be asked to change into correct school uniform.
Value of The Fortnight
SELF-DISCIPLINE
We will be studying the value self-discipline for the next fortnight.
We are demonstrating self-discipline every time we control our behaviour.
People who lack self-discipline allow their emotions to control their behaviour. It is easy to scream and throw a tantrum when we get angry. If we are self-disciplined we will control our rage and remain calm, speaking in a quiet and respectful way to others.
It would be a useful exercise for us to do a chart of how many times we yell, curse or swear and see if we could decrease the number of times we lose control of our emotions during the next fortnight.
Are you up for the challenge?.
DIANNE WRIGHT Acting Principal

EMERSON DEBUTANTE BALL 2014 Dear Parents and Students, I am requesting Expressions of Interest for students participating in the Emerson Debutante Ball 2014. Students must be in Senior School. Younger Senior students should consider if they wish to wait for the next Ball (2016) so they make their Debut closer to school graduation. It is preferable for students to ask a partner from school, but others may be considered. I would ask for parent advice in this choice. The Debutante Ball is a memorable school event. Participation involves a significant commitment from the students, and partners participating. Formal Dance lessons are usually held on a Sunday afternoon. Ladies are expected to organise their own long white dress and accessories. Gentlemen’s suits are hired. School will organise. At this stage the Ball is planned for late Term 2, 2014.

During the week of the 24th-28th February, a group of 33 very excited Middle School students and 6 staff attended the Blackwood Outdoor Education Camp. For 5 days they experienced a large variety of activities ranging from archery, low ropes course, bike riding and spending a full day in Ballarat at Sovereign Hill, having a scrumptious restaurant dinner and ending the night with the Sound & Light Show. Jye G and Josh J were interviewed by a local radio station. This can be accessed by following the link below. http://www.blackwoodssoec.vic.edu.au Click on: radio stars at the top of the page Look for the Emerson 6:34m under term 1 Some of the student’s comments: Xaviar B - “It was awesome! EMERSON SPORTS SECTION
EMERSON GRADUATE AN ATHLETIC STAR Emerson graduate Nick, continues to take the Athletics world by storm with more dominant performances in the long jump pit. Despite not jumping near his personal best of over 7 meters, Nick was able to secure first place with a jump of 6.25m at the recently held Victorian Championships. To add to his already impressive athletic resume, Nick has also been invited by Athletics Australia to compete in a 100m event in Sydney on the 15th of March which will be shown on Channel 10! We all wish Nick the best of luck.
SENIOR SPORT The Emerson Friday basketball teams continue to represent their school with pride on and off the court. The Bulls, Eagles and Hawks have continued their winning streaks with dominant performances over their rival teams. While the Crows and the Cavaliers both gave spirited efforts but unfortunately just fell short. Over all, skill levels have definitely continued to improve across the board, so let’s keep working hard at training!
JUNIOR SCHOOL RUNNING CLUB We will be kept busy writing certificates all weekend, due to the number of students smashing through their 50 and 100 lap milestones. Congratulations to you all and let’s hope this great work rate and weather can continue past the midway point of the term!

Parenting Course
There will be a 9 week parenting course, specifically designed for the parents/carers of children attending Emerson school, during term 2. It will begin on Tuesday 29th April at 1.30pm. Each session finishes at 3.00pm. The course is aimed at making our children independent and responsible members of society. We will be looking at why our children misbehave and how our behaviour can either stop or reinforce their behaviour. In session 2 we will see how emotions serve a purpose. Encouragement, possibly the greatest skill we can acquire, will be studied in the third session. The following weeks will be spent studying strategies that will improve our communication with our children. Topics like Reflective Listening, Exploring Alternatives, Natural and Logical Consequences, and Open/Closed Responses, will arm us with a variety of skills that can be used to build warm, loving relationships with our children that are based upon Mutual Respect. In an age where drug and alcohol abuse, teenage suicide, smoking, HIV, and high unemployment constantly dominate the news headlines, we cannot underestimate the value of being able to communicate honestly and freely with our children. If you are interested in attending the course, please fill in the form below and return it to school before Thursday 27th March. ——–——————————————————————————--——————
