Peace for Families is pleased to announce our Spring 2009 Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Volunteer Crisis Intervention Training.

Training will cover the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault curriculums mandated through the Office of Emergency services. The training is offered to participants interested in volunteering for our agency.

The 70 hours of training will prepare you for volunteer work in a variety of settings and to perform a variety of duties. Opportunities available include:

CARTE - Child Abuse Resolved Through Education, a 501C3 non-profit organization was established for two reasons; to educate the public about the devastating generational effects of child abuse; and to provide a cutting-edge self-esteem program for high risk teenage girls called the STARR Program. STARR stands for Succeed Through Accountable Responsible Resolve. Child abuse can range from sexual or physical abuse, abandonment and neglect to psychological abuse. According to Childhelp USA (http://www.childhelp.org/resources/learning-center/statistics) three million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States. Since many cases go unreported it is estimated that the numbers may actually be three times greater. Every two minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted. One out of every six women has been a victim of a rape or attempted rape in their lifetime. Many of the girls participating in our program have experienced various forms of abuse and multiple perpetrators. Without an intervention such as STARR, and their lack of self esteem, the abusive events will haunt them throughout their lives. These high-risk teens are less likely to complete their education, and more likely to be in other abusive relationships, become pregnant and depend on welfare. As child abuse is a generational issue, today’s victims will often expose their children to abuse. By saving one girl, we will be saving many other children to come. That is the STARR and starfish story.
