Vol. 68 No. 9 March 2018 From the President Hello ladies, This month, I would like everyone to see the review of voting procedures that Jo Jones recently sent me. Review of Voting Procedures At the International Convention in Nashville, 2016, it was agreed that an Ad Hoc Election Committee would consider changes to the current voting system. Having reviewed the work so far, the committee is proposing that, by 2020, all DKG members attending the international convention will vote for elected positions. This will require the governing documents to be amended at the 2018 convention. The committee will also recommend that all three voting options (convention, electronic, delegate) should be included in the governing documents, so that each convention may vote as to which option should be used in the following biennium. However, there are serious drawbacks in allowing only attendees at the convention to vote. There is data that shows very clearly how the location of the convention affects the percentage of votes. In 2014 and 2016, the States hosting the convention, Indiana and Tennessee, under the proposed changes, would have had four times and six times their current voting strength. The Northeast and Southeast Regions were similarly affected (1.6 and 1.4 times, respectively). The only Region that would benefit on a regular basis is Europe, based on current figures. The smaller the total attendance, the greater will be the mismatch between total membership (and therefore voting strength) and those actually voting. Attending International Conventions is a costly affair. Are we in danger of handing over the facility to vote only to those able to afford to be there? What happened to democracy? Vol. 68 No. 9 March 2018

From the President Hello ladies,

This month, I would like everyone to see the review of voting procedures that Jo Jones recently sent me.

Review of Voting Procedures

At the International Convention in Nashville, 2016, it was agreed that an Ad Hoc Election Committee would consider changes to the current voting system.

Bonnie Stewart President

Encouraging New and Young Teachers

Adams Central The ladies of Adams Central have completed their project of encouraging a young teacher. This year the group decided to present Mrs. Kaitlyn Busse with a poem anthology. Kaitlyn is a kindergarten teacher at Adams Central. This is  her second year of teaching, but first year at Adams Central.  The ladies are hoping that by using this book, she will inspire a love of poetry in her students.

South Adams

The South Adams ladies completed their project of encouraging new and young teachers by putting together a delightful welcome gift for the teachers new to South Adams. The gift included a drinking glass etched with stars, gum, post-it notes, a sharpie marker, and hand sanitizer. These gifts were presented to Kaitlin Litwiller, a new kindergarten teacher; Lona Shuey, a new second grade teacher; and Lyndsey Chandler, a new eighth grade teacher. When presenting the welcome gifts, current members of Delta Kappa Gamma shared information about the organization with the new teachers.
