Introduction-

It’s the month of March! What does that mean? It means it’s time for NCAA March Madness Basketball! It’s a time of amazing buzzer beaters, upsets, Cinderella’s, and where champions are made. Bracketology is a common part of a fans participation in this amazing tournament. The best way to predict the outcome of the tournament games is to research the teams, conferences, and strengths and weaknesses of the game. This research includes statistical data that will help determine which team is a more dominate team and what teams have the drive and determination to make it all the way!

Task-This webquest looks at college basketball statistics to predict the NCAA March Madness Champions. Mathematics is found in every shot, every pass, and every dribble. You will use the team statistics by using fractions, decimals, and percentages; probability statistics; patterns; and bracketology by relating this amazing time in sports to the even more amazing subject of mathematics. You should be able to explain the importance of mathematics in basketball, also explain any problems with assuming your predictions to be correct in sports.

Process- 1. Students should be in groups of four.2. Get a copy of this year’s NCAA March

Madness Basketball Bracket. 3. The best way to do research for this is to

split up the bracket into the four regions; East, Southeast, West and Midwest. Research the teams statistical numbers of; win/loss total, conference win/loss total, percentages of three point field goals and free throws, and points scored/allowed per game. Fill out the table stats for the teams. Compare results.

4. How do the patterns, percentages, and statistics relate to the predictions you will make? (show all work done)

5. Find an article on the internet or from a newspaper about a specific team and record the statistics used in the article. From this information explain why mathematics is important in the game of basketball.

6. When the tournament is over, explain what predictions in your bracket were wrong and why? (keep in mind, 2008 was the only year in history that all number one seeded teams made it to the final four)

The evaluation is out of 24, and is broken down into the following categories; Group/Team Work, Research Skill, Research Understanding, Research Detail, Why the predictions were Correct/Incorrect, and Completion.› Notice there is no grading on the accuracy of

the bracket, and be sure to discourage betting/gambling.

Be sure to read through the introduction and stress the relevance of the task to the students. For the process, be sure that they form into correctly sized groups and that they find the correct bracket for the project and determine who is doing which division. Give an example of how to solve for the statistics using actual data. (possibly from your school’s basketball team if available) Explain that they will be graded on the 6 things on the evaluation rubric.
