RU-486 petitions presented to Health Minister In late February, CLC’s Johanne Brownrigg of our Ottawa Bureau presented petitions to the Health Minister, Rona Ambrose. The petitions, signed by thousands of Canadians, called upon the federal Minister of Health to immediately intervene with Health Canada to ensure that the RU-486 applica- tion is definitively rejected. Last November the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association revealed that an application to Health Canada to import RU-486 is pending. CLC imme- diately launched a petition calling for the government to reject the application and more than 3,000 people signed within a few weeks. The petition noted the drug’s adverse effects for women, including causing the death of a Canadian woman back in 2001 during drug trials, and the fact that chemical abortions kill innocent, preborn children. It is also known that the drug’s developer (Hoeschst A.G.) has a historical rea- son for keeping a low profile in the RU-486 debate. It is Hoechst’s infamous relationship to the I.G. Farben Chemical Company, which aided in waging aggres- sive warfare and perpetrating crimes against human- ity by manufacturing Zyklon B, the cyanide gas used in the Nazi death camps. At Nuremberg, in 1947, 24 Farben executives were charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity. (Life Issues Institute William Brennan PHd Sept. 2005) CLC notes that RU-486 kills a developing human being in the womb at 5-9 weeks gestation, and is therefore rightly called the abortion pill. Its demon- strated side-effects include blood clots and uterine hemorrhaging. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, nearly a quarter of women taking RU-486 end up having “severe” side-effects and they can lead to further surgery, infertility and even death. FDA records at least 14 US women dying after taking RU-486 since 2000. The National March for Life theme is RU4Life?, and although the demonstration is a witness to the injustice of all abortion, we call special attention this year to the hidden genocide carried out by chemi- cal abortions. We worry that the move to chemical abortions will make abortion more readily available and more dangerous to women as it further reduces medical oversight of the abortion procedure. Our late friend Dr. Bernard Nathanson, co-founder of the U.S. abortion movement who defended life after his conversion, warned that one day the overwhelming majority of abortions would be chemical. RU-4LIFE? The National March for Life will be held in Ottawa from May 7-9, 2014. While those who participate call attention to the injustice of all abortions, the theme this year provides the opportunity to edu- cate a new generation about the effects of RU-486 and other chemical abortions such as the morning after pill and various forms of contraception which often act as abortifacients. The March events begin on Wednesday May 7 with Mass at St. Theresa of the Little Child and prayers at Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church (both on Somerset Street) fol- lowed by the always moving Candlelight Vigil at the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights Monument at 9pm. The following morning on Thursday May 8 there are prayer services and Masses at numerous churches (see the CLC website or ad in The Interim) and at noon we begin to gather on Parliament Hill. There will be several pro-life and religious leaders address- ing the crowd as well as brief comments from pro-life parliamentarians. Around 2:45pm, at the conclusion of the March through the city streets, the women and men of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign will provide testimonials about the abortions they regret. At 4 pm there will be a closing prayer service by the Eastern Catholic Chaplaincy of Ottawa. CLC notes that RU-486 kills a developing human being in the womb at 5-9 weeks gestation, and is therefore rightly called the abortion pill. Its demon-

strated side-effects include blood clots and uterine hemorrhaging. MARCH2014

The National March for Life in Ottawa is on May 8, 2014.

Banquet. The keynote speaker at the Rose Dinner is Carol Everett who was involved in the operation of four abortuaries in Texas from 1977 to 1983, overseeing 35,000 abortions. Her story is featured in the must-see documentary Blood Money that was premiered a few years ago. The Youth Banquet will feature world renowned chastity speaker and author Jason Evert who has spoken to over a million people on five continents. On Friday May 9, the Youth Conference will be held at the Hampton Inn on Coventry Road. See page 4 for a complete list of speakers and bios.

Please plan to attend the National March for Life if you are able. If you cannot, you can join us in spirit by pledging a candle for the Candlelight Vigil. Your support of this event helps us defray the costs of the entire March. Also, there are regional marches for life in other provincial capitals across the country, so you can take part in local efforts to highlight the abortion issue. Please watch our official promotional video for this year’s march by going to RU-4LIFE.ca and share this video through social media (Facebook, Twitter, blogs). Our website also provides downloadable posters and brochures that you can share in your community. Last year, 25,000 people took part in the National March for Life and thousands more bore witness in the regional marches. Please join us this year to answer in the affirmative, RU-4LIFE?

E-petition bill passesNDP MP Kennedy Stewart private member’s motion, M 428, which would allow the presentation of electronic petitions to Parliament, passed the House of Commons on January 29, 2014 in a 142-140 vote. The opposition (NDP, Liberals etc.) was joined by eight Conservative MPs (Leon Benoit of Vegreville-Wainwright; Garry Breitkreuz of Yorkton-Melville; Michael Chong of Wellington-Halton Hills; James Rajotte of Edmonton-Leduc; Kyle Seeback of Brampton West; Brad Trost of Saskatoon-Humboldt; Maurice Vellacott of Saskatoon-Wanuskewin; John Williamson of New Brunswick Southwest). The procedure and house affairs committee will have 12 months to develop a plan to allow e-petitions to be pre-sented into the House of Commons and decide at which threshold they would trigger an automatic special House debate. It is expected that the government-controlled majority in the committee will seek a high number of signatures and perhaps even a minimum number of MPs signing on as sponsors before a debate would be initiated.

Currently electronic petitions are not allowed to be presented by MPs before the house. Paper petitions that adhere to strict rules (for example there must be spaces for exactly 25 signatures per page) are given to MPs who in turn read them aloud in the House of Commons during a designated time. About 2000 petitions are pre-

sented annually in the House. Stewart said the change is necessary to bring parliamentary processes in line with 21st century practices. CLC National President Jim Hughes said that once verification issues and other possible abuses are addressed by the committee, the new rules would permit grassroots voters to have a say in the issues being discussed in Parliament and that the party leaders could no longer conspire to keep so-called controversial topics off-limits in terms of debate.

Quebec’s Bill 52On Thursday February 20, the final day before a two week spring recess, the Quebec National Assembly was unable to vote on the controversial euthanasia bill, Bill 52. Following the break, if the budget is not approved, a possible election may be called, which would kill Bill 52 from the order paper. This would be a massive loss to euthanasia supporters. Bill 52 would legalize euthanasia in the province under the guise of “healthcare.” Alex Schadenberg, the Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, which has been working with disabilities groups, religious organizations, and other groups in the province to defeat Bill 52, said that this is “not healthcare but rather a very serious abandonment of the sick and dying.” Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche, and Dr. Balfour Mount, founder of palliative care in North America, released a video warning against the grave error of legalizing euthana-sia. Vanier said to be fully human, we must support the most vul-nerable, not kill them. Mount said euthanasia endangers the weak and vulnerable and safety should take precedence over individual rights. Mount also noted with proper palliative care, a patient’s pain and suf-fering can be effectively managed.

If an election does take place, and Bill 52 dies, it will most likely be revived in the next government, so opposi-tion to pro-euthanasia legislation must con-tinue. Experts have noted that legalization in Quebec will either result in suicide tour-ism to the province or whittle down the will of other jurisdictions to uphold the law. Already, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has said Canada’s largest prov-ince should look into following Quebec’s lead of not prosecuting assisted suicide and euthanasia cases.

Ontario By-electionsOn Thursday February 13, the Ontario government held by-elections in the Niagara Falls and Thornhill provincial ridings.

Alex Schadenberg, Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC) and International Chair of groups that oppose euthanasia and assisted suicide (left) and Kevin Fitzpatrick, the Director of EPC Europe, met Pope Francis in St Peter’s square on February 19. They handed him a document concerning the world-wide situation related to euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Campaign Life Coalition was unable to iden-tify any pro-life candidates leading up to the vote. When the voting booths closed, the New Democratic Party of Ontario took Niagara Falls from the Liberals, who had held that seat for the past decade, while the Progressive Conservatives maintained Thornhill. Since Kathleen Wynne became premier last year, the Liberals have only won 2 out of 7 by-elections. This losing track record has created a lot of speculation for a spring election which might be called following a vote on the budget. The Family Coalition Party did not field any candidates in these two ridings. By-elections are a great opportunity for pro-life and pro-family candidates to bring the life and family issues forward at all-candidate debates, media interviews and advertising. Campaign Life Coalition cannot stress enough the importance of getting involved at the riding association level in order to field pro-life and pro-family candidates.

National Pro-Life ConferenceThe CLC National Conference will be held in Toronto April 4-5 at the Woodbine Banquet and Convention Hall, 30 Vice Regent Blvd. On Friday April 4, Rebecca Kiessling, an international pro-life speaker conceived in rape, and spokesperson for Personhood USA will share her personal story during the banquet. Reception for Friday evening begins at 5 pm and dinner starts at 6 pm. The fol-lowing day we have a packed schedule beginning at 8 am in the morning and concludes early at 4:30 pm so you have time to return home or relax or visit the city. Speakers include CLC National President Jim Hughes, Rev. Elmer Manzo and Fr. Paul Nicholson who will provide a spiritual focus, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition Executive Director Alex Schadenberg, and former Liberal MP Tom Wappel and CPC MP Kyle Seeback (Brampton West) who will provide a politi-cal training session, Janet Morana, Executive

Director of Priests for Life USA and Co-founder of Silent No More Awareness, Julia Cardinale Director of Si a La Vida Fondacion (Yes to Life Foundation) and Dan Zeidler, President of Family Life Council, will talk about what is happening on the life issues in Latin America, LifeSiteNews edi-tor John-Henry Westen, CLC Youth coordinator Alissa Golob, and again Rebecca Kiessling. There is a wide variety of topics that will be discussed so please plan to attend the National Conference. The conference and banquet is $139 ($99 for students) although you can choose to attend just the banquet ($65 for adults, $55 for youth) or conference ($99 for adults, $69 for youth). Price includes meals and coffee during breaks. To get the special rates at the Woodbine Hotel ($79-120) please call 416-743-9997 and mention Campaign Life Coalition.

Defund Abortion CampaignDuring the Fall of 2013, Campaign Life Coalition expanded our Defund Abortion Campaign throughout the country with large rallies in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Alberta and mini-rallies across Ontario. This upcoming Spring, Quebec, Saskatchewan and PEI will be joining the campaign with rallies of their own. The campaign calls upon provincial govern-ments to defund abortion, a medically unncessary procedure that is subsidized by taxpayers to the amount of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. In Ontario alone, at least 30-50 million taxpayer dollars are diverted from life-saving healthcare to abortion-on-demand. If abortion was defunded, provinces across the country would be able to hire more doctors and nurses, purchase additional MRI machines, improve hospital infrustracture in rural areas, increase funding for treatement for children with autism etc. Contact your provincial CLC office for more information on what’s happening in your province.

40 Days for LifeHundreds of cities around the world kicked off the first 40 Days for Life campaign of 2014 on March 5 which lasts until April 13, 2014. 40 Days for Life is a powerful, peaceful, prayerful witness to life that saves hundreds of lives every year. In 2007, Campaign Life Coalition brought this campaign to Canada holding the first vigils in Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. We are very pleased with the way it has expanded throughout the country since then, with many other pro-life groups and grassroots supporters taking this on in their communities. This winter campaign, 12 Canadian cities have

registered to hold vigils at their local hospitals and abortion facili-ties. They are: Campbell River, Prince George, Terrace, Victoria (British Columbia), Calgary, Edmonton (Alberta), Guelph, Oakville, St. Catharines, Windsor (Ontario), Montreal (Quebec) and the very first campaign in Whitehorse (Yukon). If you would like to get involved, please go to www.campaignlifecoalition.com/40daysforlife for a list of locations and/or to contact the cam-paign coordinator in your area. (Correction: The February Issue of CLC National News stated that the Campaign starts on March 3. This was a typo. The correct date is March 5)

As you can see from this newsletter, there are many issues that Campaign Life Coalition must address and on so many fronts. Please use the response card and envelope enclosed in this package to financially support your local CLC organization.

February 24, 2014

Dear Friends for Life: The 17th annual National March for Life (NMFL) will be held in Ottawa on Thursday May 8th. This year’s theme is RU-4LIFE? in response to an application currently under review by Health Canada to bring the abortion drug RU-486 into Canada. Campaign Life Coalition is very grateful to the families, teachers and pastors who have been bringing the youth to the NMFL over the years. It has been an educational and life changing experience for many of them. As the youth component at the March continued to grow, it was decided to have a separate Youth Banquet on the night of the Rose dinner and a Youth Conference on the Friday following the March. Initially the youth were invited to join the Rose Dinner, but as more teachers and youth leaders started to attend the dinner, it was decided a separate banquet with a speaker specifically chosen for the youth was necessary. Now both events are well attended and held in the Hotel Conference Centre. Last year there were over 25,000 in attendance at the NMFL, with over 80% under the age of 25. Since its inception in 2002, the Youth Conference has grown to over 1,000 youth; along with teachers, chaperones, pastors and group leaders in attendance. Held on the Friday following the March, teens have the opportunity to attend talks and workshops on pro-life strategies, the effects of abortion, along with solutions on how to work towards a pro-life, pro-family Canada. Campaign Life Coalition has been subsidizing the youth participants for both of these events, $35 for the dinner and $40 for the conference. Happily, groups and individuals have generously donated funds to help cover these costs, yet, these donations run short of the need, so we are asking you to help fund these events. There are two ways in which you can help cover the youth costs for the National March for Life.

1) Send in a donation to Campaign Life Coalition earmarked for the March for Life. Last year we listed more than 100 people in the March for Life program who had made donations towards the event. Let us know if you prefer to remain anonymous. We need the donation before April 18th to list your name in the program. The minimum donation is $20.

2) Place a sponsorship ad in the program (samples on reverse). You may wish to note your pro-life hero or the memory of someone dear, or simply express best wishes or a thank you. The space is limited so a short comment will do, with your name group or anonymous if you chose. We require a minimum donation of $100 for the ads. The cut off date for the ads is April 15th.

The National March for Life committee thanks you for taking the time to read this letter and kindly consider this request for financial support. We are very grateful for your on-going participation in the Pro-life cause.

Yours truly, Leeda Crawford NMFL 2014 Advertising and Sponsorship Committee Tel: 416-538-1390 / Email: [email protected]
