YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE Youth Sunday, Confirmation Sunday And Silent Auction April 24, 2016 Join us on Sunday, April 24 when our youth (gr. 6-12) will participate in morning worship, and one youth will be confirmed. Following worship there will be a dinner and silent auction to raise funds for our upcoming mission trip to Ronceverte, WV. Prepared by Don Rearick and Bob Engels, the meal will include Pasta Bar, salad, bread and dessert. At the silent auction, members of Westminster will have the opportunity to bid on services provided by our youth. These services might include babysitting, car washing, yard work, dog walking, baking, homework help, and many others. Since this is a community-building endeavor, we are inviting members of the congregation to support our youth by offering their gifts and talents to be auctioned as well. In addition to volunteering one’s services, members may donate items, such as gift baskets, gift certificates, baked goods, new household items, jewelry, etc. Youth who donate services to the auction will receive up to $50 to help defray the cost ($125) of the youth mission trip to Ronceverte, WV. Any remaining proceeds from the silent auction will be used for future youth mission projects. Westminster adults will have several opportunities in the coming weeks to volunteer their talents or items to be included in the silent auction. For further information, contact Pat Santelli [email protected] or 330.283.8009. WPC Youth Event Recap: Polar Blast Snow-Tubing And Lock-In (Jan. 27-28) On January 27, eleven WPC youth and friends fueled up on pizza after morning worship, then hit the Brandywine slopes for an afternoon of snow-tubing. The group shared Third Sunday Dinner with WPC neighbors before beginning their lock-in with worship in the chancel led by Pastor Jon. The night continued with ice-breakers, a brain-storming session for summer and fall events, ping-pong, pool, and many rounds of the game Sardines. A midnight movie rounded out the activities. The youth were treated to breakfast the next morning by Dave and Linda Stobbs. CELTIC GARDEN AND CHANCEL FLOWER NEWS

Chancel Flowers Each week the Chancel Flowers are arranged from the Celtic Garden or from a wholesale source. The arrangers also do the arranging on Palm Sunday, Easter and Christmas. Members and friends always give generously for all the arrangements. Also, the arrangers provide flowers for the 3rd Sunday dinners, memorial receptions and church luncheons. These dedicated arrangers are: Kyra Bosnik, Kris Keller, Sook Lee, Lindy Lincicome, Inky Malone, Raphael Peoples and Kristy Yates.

Celtic Garden

The first flower catalog to arrive after the holidays is always such a treat! It takes our minds off the long, gray days of winter and transports us to the sunny, warmer days of spring when we can start planting our gardens. Now that spring is just around the corner, the gardeners are looking forward to being able to prepare the garden for the coming season as soon as the weather permits. We always welcome anyone who would like to join us - no experience necessary! The regular work schedule will come out in April. Thanks to a very generous donor, this spring we will be able to replace our old wooden rose arbor with one that is maintenance-free. Then our next project will be the annual perennial plant sale, which will be held in conjunction with the Kiwanis pancake breakfast on Saturday, May 7. We’re hoping that all of you home gardeners will have perennials that you will be able to divide and contribute to the plant sale. All proceeds go toward purchasing the plants and flowers that make our Celtic garden so beautiful.

Flapjacks and Flowers

This annual event is sponsored by the West Akron Kiwanis to benefit the Akron Youth Symphony, and our own Celtic Garden holds their annual plant sale in conjunction with this event. Please plan to join us on Saturday, May 7, 2016 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Tickets are $7.00 for adults, $3.50 for children under 10. Check the poster in Wright-Herberich Hall for further details and plan to join us!

The Script

March-April 2016

From Our Pastor

This edition of our Script newsletter highlights the transition from Lent to Easter…from death to life…from suffering to exaltation. Certainly, these themes represent a familiar rhythm in Christian meditation and practice. But, that they are familiar does not make them any less transformational or lacking in gospel power.

At the heart of this journey from the lowly valley to the majestic peak is our own, often strained, confession. Here, we offer recognition of our brokenness. Here, we cry out for wholeness. Here, we acknowledge that we are in no position to save ourselves. Only God will do.

Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist Carl Jung once wrote: I admire Christians, because when you see someone who is hungry or thirsty, you see Jesus. When you welcome a stranger, someone who is “strange,” you welcome Jesus. What I do not understand, however, is that Christians never seem to recognize Jesus in their own poverty. You always want to do good to the poor outside you and at the same time you deny the poor person living inside you. Why can’t you see Jesus in your own poverty, in your own hunger and thirst? In all that is “strange” inside you: in the violence and anguish that are beyond your control! You are called to welcome all this, not to deny its existence, but to accept that it is there and to meet Jesus there.

This is, of course, the challenge of Lent, and the only honest way forward.

Peace, Jon
