CAPITAL CAMPAIGN ELLEN PAPADAKIS
Proverbs 11:24
Thank you to all who have turned in pledge cards for 2018. We had our largest number of January pledge cards and have currently raised pledges of about 70% of our goal of $510,000. This is good news, but we still have a long way to go. Each year, our parishioners turn in pledge cards all year long, some waiting until the last week of the year to both make a pledge and fulfill their commitment. Although we are grateful for each and every contribution, the Stewardship Committee is working hard to encourage all parishioners to pledge as early as possible so our Parish Council can accurately budget to meet our rising operating costs for our church and related ministries.
This year we celebrated our annual Stewardship Drive with cupcakes and beautiful stewardship pins for all of our early stewards. We are even drawing stewards’ names for monthly parking places. We want to celebrate our community of stewards! If you haven’t pledged yet, please take a moment to turn in your pledge card or go online to www.stkatherinegoc.org and pledge electronically. We have over 50 parishioners who have made donations for 2018 without filling out a new pledge card for 2018. If that’s you, please fill out a card so we can include you on our annual Honor Roll of Stewards, and so you will be considered in “good standing.”
As we continue our Lenten journey together, let’s open our hearts and renew our commitments to St. Katherine by giving of our time, talents, and treasury.
STEWARDSHIP THANK YOU STEWARDS STEPHANIE HUBBARD
Phase III construction, our Narthex and Administration Center, is nearly complete! Now we can concentrate on the final touches to bring our beloved church campus renovation to fruition. As my husband likes to tell me when I insist that one of my home improvement projects is done, “it will never be done”, he reminds me and he’s right of course. Our campus revitalization is a project of love and love needs nourishment daily. We continue our fundraising efforts not only to outfit our narthex and offices with essential items, but also for on-going projects.
The St. Katherine Legacy of Love wall plaques will soon be installed. Father Michael is planning a blessing service soon after. The second engraving of name plates will take place in the near future. Your opportunity to participate by pledging a wall plaque is now. An order form has been included in this publication for your convenience. Look for it and use it to join this generation of donors in leaving a legacy of your own to the future generations of our St. Kathe-rine Orthodox community.
For additional details please contact Ellen Papadakis via the church office (310)540-2434.
FOUNDATION NEWS WHAT IS THE ST. KATHERINE FOUNDATION? ROSALIND HALIKIS
It is a charitable organization recognized by the Internal Revenue Service. It does differ from our church stewardship. Stewardship is vital to the daily operation of St. Katherine. Stewardship pays the utilities, salaries, maintenance and other recurring costs associated with the church. It is important to note that the Foundation is not involved in the daily activities of the church and does not seek to divert any funds from the Stewardship program.
The Foundation holds endowments to support St. Katherine’s long-term goals and mission. Areas would include its youth ministry, acquisition of property, capital improvements, charitable outreach and assistance for our elderly parishioners.
Our most visible ministry is the yearly scholarship awarding to the youth of St Katherine who have excelled in academics and who have served their church and community. Other than setting up an endowment, donors can also give a one time scholarship in memory or in honor of a loved one. Please feel free to contact anyone on the board for information in this area. We are anxiously awaiting the Scholarship Presentation on Sunday, May 20, 2018 after the Divine Liturgy. Please take the time on that day to congratulate these students who have made our community very proud. AXIOI!!
Our mission is only possible through your generosity. Donations are welcome and may be given either during the donor’s lifetime or the Foundation may be named as a beneficiary in a will. All gifts will help our church grow and achieve a strong financial base. At the same time, donors will personally enjoy the tax benefit of such a contribution.
Our Help and Comfort 3
We wish our Saint Katherine community a Blessed Lent. During Great Lent, Philoptochos will be assisting with several events:
• Palm tying on Friday, March 30 at 6pm - we will join our Jr. & Sr. Goyans tying palms into crosses for Palm Sunday. A Lenten supper will be served.
• Our annual Palm Sunday Luncheon, April 1 - See the attached flyer and be sure to make your reservations before March 25.
• Decorating the Kouvouklion (Epitaphio) on Holy Friday, April 6 - we will meet at 10am to decorate the Epitaphio (Kouvouklion) representing the tomb of Christ. Everyone is welcome to participate in this meaningful activity. We would appreciate donations of calla lilies, rose petals, and bay leaves if you have them in your garden. Please bring them to church by Holy Friday morning.
• Collecting red eggs for the Anastasi service - Very hard-boiled red eggs may be brought to church from Holy Thursday through Holy Saturday at any of the services.
In advance, we thank you, the St. Katherine community, for your response to our annual appeal for Easter flowers and red eggs.
We hope to have tsoureki available for sale. Watch the weekly bulletin for more information.
As always, we have many thanks to our Saint Katherine community. Thank you to those who baked vasilopites for Vasilopita Sunday. Special thanks to Alexandra Zarkas for baking the vasilopites that Father Michael cut for our community ministries. Thank you also for your generous response to our Vasilopita collection, calendar mailing and membership drive. Thus far, we have 125 members. Welcome to our “first-time” members: Mr. & Mrs. Dimitris Anagnostou, G. Louie Georges, Maria Kessaris, Deborah Korakis, Nina Papadakis, Nick &
Kari Pliaconis, and Dr. Katrina Vlachos. If you have not yet joined, it is not too late to become a member of Philoptochos, the largest Christian philanthropic organization in the United States. Your active and/or financial support enables the Philoptochos to be effective as a contributor to charitable organizations and to assist in fulfilling the needs of our parish. The greater your support, the greater the potential of our Philoptochos to accomplish and expand its ministries. Even if you are unable to give of your time, your financial commitment is beneficial and sincerely appreciated! Information regarding Philoptochos membership is available from our Membership Chair Andrea Ballas or president, Stella Zogopoulos Demis.
Thank you to everyone who attended our February 18, Philoptochos General Meeting. We enjoyed a delicious lunch and wonderful fellowship. Special thanks to Olympia Harris and our board members who helped with planning and preparing. Thank you to Dr. Corina Gheorghiu for speaking to us on the topic of Forgiveness.
Thank you also to those who wore red on “Go Red Sunday” February 4. This national event brings awareness that heart disease affects women (as well as men) but is often preventable with heart healthy habits.
We have met our January and February obligations to the National Philoptochos: $600 to benefit Saint Basil Academy; $350 for Social Services; $250 to the Cancer Fund; $150 to Autism Assistance; and $50 to Saint Photios Shrine.
Save the date! This year’s Kids ‘n’ Cancer event takes place Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Newport Beach Country Club. Invitations will soon be available.
If you would like more information about Philoptochos or any of this information, contact Stella Demis at [email protected] or (310)378-3789.

Now that construction is officially over, we will resume our study of Old Testament history and the prophets of the Southern Kingdom. Classes resume starting on Wednesday, March 14. We will meet at 11AM immediately after the Presanctified Liturgy (10AM). Classes will be held in the Fotion Fellowship Hall. Our class will also include a Lenten potluck. Please bring a vegan dish.
A new class, Adult Catechism Orthodox Theology will begin on Sunday, March 11, during Sunday school hour. The Sr. High school class has graciously moved their class to the 2nd floor Conference Room in the new Narthex/Administrative complex, so we can meet in the Fotion Fellowship Hall. All are welcome, especially those who are preparing for baptism or chrismation into the Holy Orthodox Church.

MARDI GRAS - A NIGHT TO REMEMBER ANDREA BALLAS & ELLEN PAPADAKIS
SENIOR CITIZENS HELEN BROCK
The St. Katherine Seniors are not yet ready to take to their rocking chairs. They are an active group who enjoy outings, informative speakers and good food.
Our February meeting took us on a pseudo-safari to the dark continent, Africa. Our terrific guide was Chrysanthea Brothers whose video narrated the trip she and her husband had the pleasure of taking. The video showed flora and fauna in their cage free habitat roaming God’s beautiful plains. Thank you dear friends, Craig and Chrysa for taking us on this armchair journey that most if not all of us would never experience.
Some of our future possibilities, being considered are: 1) Guided tour of our beloved Cathedral (St. Sophia) with lunch at Papa Christo’s, 2) St. Antonio Winery Lunch and tour of winery, 3) New Clifton Cafeteria and 4) Our Play presented on (mark the date) Sunday, June 10 after church, with lunch and an extra special guest performer.
Our stay-in meetings always include Dr. Jim Dimitriou with updates of event happenings in Greece followed by an always delicious lunch served up by Chef Chris Loukatos – by the way any member who brings a prospective member to one of our meeting gets their own and their neophyte friend’s lunch for free. Our meetings are a get together— dine, learn from and have fun. Try us once and we are sure you will join us again.
DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE, ANTHOS CHAPTER #395 CONNIE CONSTANT
In past months, Northern and Southern California have been scenes of unprecedented natural disasters, more recently affecting our neighbors in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. The Daughters of Penelope continue sharing their financial resources to help our fellow Californians who unfortunately have been affected by historic fires, floods, and resulting mud slides.
On January 27, five of Anthos’ Daughters, Linda Bhatia, Anne Eliopulos, Mary Pruitt, Stella Schiewe, and Ellie Thermos attended the AHEPA/Daughters District Conference held in San Bernardino. The San Bernardino members hosted a day of worthwhile activities focused on helping our fellow human beings who are in need. Discussions included help for victims of domestic abuse, and “Canines for Warriors” which will provide helpful companion dogs for veterans.
Also discussed at the District Conference is a project for our youth (ages 12-18) already in progress in other parts of the U.S., called a “Hellenic History Tournament.” Now being considered for the Western States, it is fashioned after the long popular “Jeopardy” TV program. The AHEPA family scholarship program was also included on the agenda. A Western Region District Convention is being planned for Reno, Nevada on June 21-24, 2018.
On Saturday, April 28, our Anthos #395 chapter, along with four other Southern California Daughters chapters based in San Pedro, Hollywood, Long Beach, and Los Angeles, will host a visitation for the Daughters’ District Governor at our own St. Katherine’s in Redondo Beach.
Thank you to everyone who joined in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of our beloved Saint Katherine parish at our annual Mardi Gras on February 3rd at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Attendees of all ages enjoyed wonderful fellowship, the fantastic music of The Esquires big band and the ever-popular photo booth. The highlight of the evening was a rendition of “Those Were the Days” personalized by our own very talented Elaine Palaiologos. Watch for photos from this year’s event to soon be posted on the rolling bulletin board.
Special thanks to our decorating and clean-up team who help transform the already beautiful club into a festive décor worthy of New Orleans: Vicki Schiappa, Olympia Harris, Carolyn Crossley, Georgene Mitsanas, Donna Papadakis, Tom Papadakis, Ronnie and Elaine Wade, Anastasia and Mike Robles, and others we may have missed naming.
The event would not be possible without the generosity of our underwriters and donors. A sincere thank you to: Chrysa and Craig Brothers; Dr. Gus and Helen Dalis; John Giakouminakis; Konstantina and Alex Goumas; Christine and Alek Haidos; Rosalind F. Halikis; Dr. Mark and Janice Halikis; Katerina and Vasilios Marutsos; John Matesich; Barbara and John Menzelos; Bonnie and Andy Mitrosilis; Georgene and George Mitsanas; The Papadakis Family; Dean Pliaconis; Maria and Patrick Santy; Tina and Peter Vasilion; and Elaine and Ronnie Wade.

BUDDING ANGELS ANELIA V. ORDOULIDIS
Spring is around the corner, and this is bringing a lot of opportunities for the members of our wonderful group to get together outdoors. We usually have our events at parks when the weather permits after the month of March.
Our next meeting will be on March 16 at 11am at our church (room EC 105). We will be making Easter crafts.
We will have our annual Easter egg hunt in April at a park. The date, time, and location are to be decided so, dear fellows, please expect our March e-mail with the exact info for the event.
The last event of the group was to celebrate Valentine's Day, and so we had lots of fun paired with crafts and lots of cookies. We as moms also spend some time talking about our concerns and difficulties as parents.
And speaking of Valentine's Day, we shall not forget to celebrate love and life every day. Sadly, there is so much aggression in the today's world. Let's all send prayers to the children who were victims in the Florida school shooting rampage this month which was described as the deadliest mass shooting in the modern American history. This is another reminder about how important it is for our kids to have not only our support but also a sense of community and love for it. Church groups provide so many wonderful opportunities to both parents and their children. We all can make a change in the world by involving our kids in at least one of the wonderful organizations that our church supports.
And, as a reminder, the Budding Angels is a group for the youngest church members (newborn to 3 years old). Our mission is not only to introduce church fellowship but also to build love for the Greek Orthodox culture. Both kids and their parents benefit by joining our social circle. So if you would like to join us please don't hesitate to contact our church office. Much love to all of you!
JR. GOYA LIFE IS SO COLORFUL KIM MANOS & SHANA GHEKIERE
February SKY Night was a colorful night. Our Jr. GOYAns had a hands-on class learning about painting from the very informative and entertaining Jean Epting of Peacock Painting Parties. If you look carefully in the back-left corner, you will also see one of our older Jr. GOYA members showing what he learned in class. Jr. GOYA is made up of our middle school students. And as you can see, they are all very talented and happy.
SR. GOYA JULIE MAKRYGIANNIS
For the second year in a row, the Sr. Goyans met at the home of Koko Makrygiannis to share their love for their community by donating supplies to make 60 complete lunches for the homeless.
Each lunch contained a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips, fruit cup, drink, napkin and spoon all in a Ziploc bag. In addition to the lunches, the Sr. Goyans tied fleece scarves to keep those on the street nice and warm. The lunches were delivered to the Long Beach Rescue Mission where the staff was overjoyed with the donation. Great work Sr. Goyans!

SUNDAY SCHOOL AND THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS BONNIE MITROSILIS
As we head into Lent, now is a great time to pull together, at home and in Sunday School, and focus on an outward expression of our faith. Outward in our prayer life: Who needs our prayers? Outward in our support of others: Who is struggling and needs a hand, help with bills, a kind word, a visit, food, and/or clothes? Outward in our biblical education: Where in our community can we apply what the Bible teaches us? Find a way to put your faith into action.
In this time of Lent, let’s read, read, read! Read the Bible, Old Testament (love those prophets!) and New Testament. Read the writings of the early church and read current Orthodox writers. There is so much out there to help us each and every day on this journey to Pascha (and year round).
What do they say about becoming a great writer? Be a great reader. You have to be able to discern what great writing looks like. (continued on page 7)
As we enter into Holy and Great Lent, I would like to express my gratitude to all parents of our altar boys that ensure their sons are available to serve as scheduled in the Holy Altar of God at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church. It is especially rewarding to serve in the Holy Altar during Holy Pascha, to experience the presence of our eternal gift of salvation as we celebrate the life-giving Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This “feast of feasts” is the most significant day in the life of the Greek Orthodox Church.
I would also like to remind the altar boys of their duties and responsibilities as follows:
Altar Boys (Acolytes): The role of the altar boy remains a genuine and vital one in the “eucharistic assembly” of the faithful, as well as in other services. He stands ready to serve God in whichever capacity he is called upon. It is a stewardship of young men; a service that they offer to God as their regular Sunday offering of talent and ability.
Purpose/Mission Statement: To serve God and His Church in the Holy Altar faithfully and reverently. Also to assist the clergy in all the church services and to grow in one’s own faith with an Orthodox Christian commitment.
Time Commitment: Altar boys serve every Sunday as well as Holy Week, Pascha and major feast days of the Church.
Membership: Young Greek Orthodox men from six years of age through eighteen years of age (i.e. grades 1-12).
Activities: Altar boys learn the meaning and order of each Divine Liturgy through repetitive participation in those services. Through their love-offering of service during the Holy Liturgy of the Church, they fulfill a sacred and indispensable role in the liturgical life of the Church. Because of their sacred duties, they are distinguished from the rest of the faithful by wearing the familiar altar-boy robe (sticharion). Altar boy duties include, first and foremost attentiveness and prayer at the services, secondly to participate in all processions and entrances, and thirdly to ensure that a state of preparedness is maintained for all that may be needed during and after the Divine Liturgy.
ALTAR BOYS SUBDEACON EVANGELOS
MYRRHBEARERS NEEDED FOR HOLY WEEK DEBORAH KORAKIS & ZOI WHITE
The Holy Order of the Myrrh Bearers is a Youth Ministry Program of St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, open to all girls in the Sunday School Program from grades 3-12. The Order is based on the account in the Gospels of the women disciples and followers of the Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ who ministered to His needs and went to
anoint His body with myrrh after His burial (Mark 15:43-16:8; Matthew 27:55-56; John 19:38-20:18).
These women were faithful to Jesus to the end and were the first witnesses of the Resurrection. They are identified in the Bible as: Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome. The Order also represents the five wise virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) who were prepared to meet the bridegroom because they had oil for their lamps.
Serving as a Myrrhbearer is a great opportunity for the young ladies of our community to be an important part of the Holy Week services and to serve our Lord.
Interested young ladies are invited to contact Deborah Korakis at (310)530-7394 or Zoi White at (310)541-2561 or after the Divine Liturgy during coffee hour and signup to participate in the Holy Week services.

GREEK LANGUAGE SCHOOL MARIA POLSON
We are still beaming with pride from having hosted his Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco and the members of the Hellenic Education and Culture Committee (HECC), in celebrating the feast of the Three Hierarchs, the patron saints of Greek schools. Most importantly, we want to acknowledge and congratulate our students that participated in the HECC’s Seventh Annual Contest of Letters and Arts. Katrina Billis (pictured right) won 3rd Prize in the Arts and Crafts category and Alexandra Polson 1st Prize in Photography. Alexandros Syms submitted an entry in the Writing category and Gabriela Flokas submitted an entry in the Arts and Crafts category. Bravo and congratulations to all of them and we hope to submit more entries in more categories next year. We would
like to thank everyone in our wonderful St. Katherine community that helped us organize the event and came out to support us. We hope you all enjoyed the program and learned from our students why we honor the Three
Hierarchs and why they lived such exemplary lives.
We are now in full speed ahead planning our March 25 Greek Independence Day and Annunciation
of the Theotokos luncheon fundraiser. The students are busy learning their
poems and this year we have some new poems we are very excited to share with all of you. This is our one and only fundraiser luncheon that celebrates two of the most important events in our Greek national history and Orthodox faith.
All our teachers and staff are working tirelessly to make our
Greek school the best it can be, always thinking of the needs of our students and
how to help them improve. We never turn students away and always find a way to
accommodate everyone. Our students come from near and far and love attending Greek school. That within itself is a true testament as to how great our school has become. So please come celebrate Greek Independence Day and the Annunciation of the Theotokos and support our school, help us grow, help us reach our academic goals and mark your calendars for
Sunday, March 25.
For more information about our Greek school, please email us at: [email protected].
Dr. Eleftheria Arapoglou of HECC presenting Alexandra her award.
(continued from page 6) The same is true for becoming great Christians. We need to read to know what being a great Christian looks like. How can we follow Christ if we don’t know his words and actions and what he’s asking of us?
As a Sunday School community outreach project we are still accepting baby blankets. If you are so inclined, please put your hands to work and wrap an at risk newborn in warmth, prayer and love. You can pass them on to me at church or call me and I’ll pick it up.
May God bless our lovely children and Sunday School teachers!

12 Our Help and Comfort
St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church 722 Knob Hill Avenue, Redondo Beach, CA 90277
Dear St. Katherine Family,
Will you look around? Our construc on efforts have finally been completed and the campus looks amazing! That being said, it is me to start Fes val 2018, which will be held on July 13, 14, and 15. We are currently planning the grounds layout, cooking schedule and our adver sing campaign. Even though we do have addi onal space we will NOT be looking at bringing out external vendors this year but using the space for our booth needs.
We've already had are first mee ng of the year and will con nue to hold them through the preparatory phase. All are welcome to come, discuss and share their thoughts with us. This year's focus is on bringing in addi onal volunteers during the food prepara on phase. It's the cri cal part of our fes val as our guests delight on the crea ons made in the weeks prior to fes val. As part of our schedule we are examining bringing back Monday evening prepara on, as an opportunity for those of us who work during the day to come help.
Regards—Christ
