    THE DISH:

THE EMERALD GRILLBy Elli de Bowen

With fewer and fewer late night menus being offered any longer

and some favorite local spots, its getting tougher for the theatre

crowd to go out for a bite after a show. Luckily, an old favorite has

reopened its doors under new management! The Emerald Grill is

back and ready to serve you! My friend and I stopped in after a

play performance at the Fire Hall Theatre and were immediately

and warmly greeted by the staff. We settled into a booth and took a

look at the large menu. Its your standard truck stop fair with

breakfast items, burgers, huge dinners and several dessert options.

But then we saw a special menu set on the side. A full pizza menu

with all the faves, plus some very unique flavors! Philly Cheeses-

take Pizza, BBQ Chicken, Patty Melt, Chicken Bacon Ranchplus

    many more.

Some of the customer favorites on the menu include the Chicken

Wrap, the Emerald Salad and the Meatloaf. I thought Id better try

the Chicken Wrap, but I am unable to resist French Toast when its

on the menu, so I did what any right thinking human would do I

ordered both. And they were delicious. The French toast was a bit

too dough-y in the middle but the nutmeg flavor made up for it. We

also tackled an order of the Waffle Attack which is something like

a loaded baked potato on waffle fries. A good way to say goodbye

to your diet! My friend was happy with the Chili (piled high with

fresh onions) and the Philly Stake Sandwich.

But, for both of us, what really took center stage was the pizza.

Brother, let me tell you! I was quite surprised! The crust was per-

fect and the taste was superb. I am ordering this pizza again and

again! And to make this even better They offer FREE DELIV-

ERY! And not just the pizza. Anything on the menu! Right now,

their delivery radius is a bit limited, but soon they will cater to the

entire city! I cant wait. Until then, I will be happy to return many

    times to The Emerald Grill!

    BEFORE CUTTING GLUTENFamily Features

In the battle to get leaner and

    healthier, people have been

    targeting many different food

    groups over the years, from

    fats to carbohydrates. Now,

    experts are weighing in on

whether or not grains might be

a culprit in the growing preva-

lence of certain diseases, in-cluding obesity and dementia.

    Conflicting opinions on carbo-

    hydrates

    "Carbohydrates are awful for

    the brain," said Dr. David

    Perlmutter, neurologist and

author of the new book "Grain

    Brain." "Eating carbohydrate

    foods increases blood sugar

    levels, which causes inflam-

mation and can lead to demen-

    tias."

However, a recent study conducted by the University of Nebraska

showed that eating whole grains, such as barley and brown rice, ac-

    tually helped decrease inflammation.

Carolyn O'Neil, a registered dietitian, also agrees with these find-

ings that dispute the elimination of carbohydrates in one's diet.

"Nothing could be further from the truth," O'Neil said. "A study by

Centers for Disease Control researchers projected that if grains

were eliminated then diets would be extremely low in folic acid,

iron and B vitamins. Even those with a gluten digestion problem

have their choice of many nutritious gluten free grains to enjoy, in-

cluding amaranth, buckwheat, corn, millet, non-contaminated oats,

quinoa, rice, sorghum, teff and wild rice."

    The experts weigh-in

A growing number of people are being diagnosed with sensitivity

to gluten, which is a condition that can cause a range of health

problems. Gluten found in wheat, barley, rye and in oats processed

in the same mills as those grains, cannot be digested by those with

celiac disease (CD) and can affect the health of those who are

    gluten intolerant.

According to the National Institute of Health, between 5 percent

and 10 percent of all people may suffer from a gluten sensitivity of

some form. One out of every 133 Americans (about 3 million peo-

ple) have Celiac Disease. Individuals with CD do need to consume

a gluten-free diet. Nutrition experts in the United States and

Canada state there is no evidence eating whole grains containing

gluten poses widespread health risks for the rest of the population.

    For more information, visit www.bestfoodfacts.org.

Some experts, like Perlmutter, are also critical of wheat as a culprit

in obesity. This is a claim disputed by others, including JudyAdams, registered dietitian with the Wheat Foods Council, who

points out that Americans are actually eating less wheat today than

they did one hundred years ago. O'Neil adds that those who are

cutting gluten out of their diets in order to lose weight may wind

    up gaining instead.

"You can eat just as many or even more calories when choosing

gluten free foods," she said. "After all, gluten free chocolate chip

cookies are still chocolate chip cookies."

Although gluten may be at the center of the current debate, all

sides seem to agree some factors do play a key role in a healthy

lifestyle: physical activity; sleep; healthy fats, such as those in

olive oil and avocado; and a Mediterranean style diet, which em-

    phasizes fruits, vegetables and seafood.

With these healthy dieting elements in mind, and by keeping your-

self informed about the facts and benefits of foods, you can make

the most educated decision when choosing what to feed your fam-ily.

DJ MACE By Mike PetersonIve had the privilege of getting to know a local and talented DJ, who goes by DJ Mace. He has an

interesting story and defines what it means to strive for your dreams and that with enough hard

work, you can make it. Take a read!

After5: How long have you been in the DJ business?

DJ Mace: We started back in 2011. I had always wanted to DJ and my fiance wanted to start a

business to bring in extra money. I had the idea and she made it happen. We started buying the

equipment, doing advertising, taking care of music. We did a few open dances and birthday parties

in Grafton, ND under the name of Sonido Azteca (Aztec sounds) as the business name and I came

up with my DJ name as DJ mace, which is actually the initials of all of us. That same year, My fi-

ance who is also owner with me, was diagnosed with cancer. We took a break from the business

and moved away for her treatment and to be with family. We came back fall of 2012. We threw a

big dance party in grafton nd to let everyone know we were back in business, thats when we

changed the name to Mace Productions. People seemed glad to have us back because there hadn't

really been many dances since we took a break. We had raffles for bottles of tequila, games, it was

a really good time and we got quite a bit of jobs out of that night.

A5: Is this your sole way of making a living?DJ: No. I used to do maintenance in Grand Forks for several apartment companies. I really love

being a maintenance technician and i also would have weekends free to do my dances. We moved

to stephen mn in 2013 where we now own a house and i started work at Marvin windows and

doors in grafton ND and even though it's hard traveling right now because of the crazy weather, im

glad I still have weekends free for the business.

A5: What's are some your preferred songs or styles?

DJ: I love techno music. I know its not very popular here but I really love it. Now that I live here

though im getting used to country music and I've gotta admit there's some really great songs and

artists in that genre. I play it all though, from regional Spanish, Cumbias, rock, new country, Pop,

all the way to Elvis Presley!

A5: Briefly, what's your life story and what kind of hardships have you encountered on the

way to being a DJ? How did you find your way to Minnesota?

DJ: My family moved us to St James MN from Mexico city when I was in first grade. I grew up

there and I would visit the rest of my family in Mexico City every summer. In high school I met

my fiance who's family was from Stephen. She moved to Grand Forks to go to Northland College

and I decided to join her and permanently move to Grand forks. Now her mom has given us her

house in Stephen for us to raise our family. We are very grateful to her because our children reallylove this small town.

A5: What sort of venues do you play?

DJ: We do it all. From weddings, graduation parties, birthday parties, Quinceaeras (sweet six-

teens), anniversaries, open dances, any special ocassion where people want to have a great and fun

night. We travel wherever we are required as well.

A5: You're from Mexico, originally. Are there any similar challenges here that you may have

    faced over there?

DJ: ve never DJ'd in Mexico but I do follow some DJ's from mexico city on YouTube, just be-

cause I love spanish music. I think the biggest challenge I have here is getting exposed, advertise-

ment. There's a couple other DJs around the area that play spanish music like I do and because

they have lived here all their life, people know them and give them preference. People are afraid of

change, or trying something new I think. But we still keep advertising with flyers and on our face-

book page so hopefully we start meeting more and more people. Would you consider the Ameri-

can Dream to be alive and well? I feel it is. There's many opportunities out there you just have to

sacrifice a little bit of time and put a lot of effort into something in order to succeed at what you're

doing or want to accomplish. And being successful and loving what you do is my version of the

    American dream.

A5: Any interesting or fun stories from your DJ'ing experience?

DJ: We got hired for an outdoor wedding last fall. We got to the venue, set up all of our equipment,

the lights, the speakers, the mixer. All was up and running so we decided to take off to the cere-

mony where we were going to play some music there as well. After that was over we went back to

the venue and as we were pulling up we see this big gush of wind blowing away the tarp where

our equipment was set up and just as we thought, all of our equipment had been blown down to the

floor. I thought I was gonna start crying! It's expensive equipment and we didnt have the insurance on

it yet. Thankfully everything was fine. Nothing broken, nothing damaged. We

still bought new lights and of course insurance.

A5: How about DJ'ing etiquette. Are there certain things that people re-

ally should not do while you are on the board?

DJ: Touch my laptop! I cannot tell you how many times people get a bit tipsy

and they want a certain song right there and there, get impatient and decide to

find the song for themselves on my laptop. Or maybe they just want to know

how it feels to be a DJ for one night but either way, it's one of my pet peeves

as a DJ. I also get a lot of weird requests from weddings... crazy song re-

quests and I have to end up asking the couple if its ok with them for me toplay certain songs. Maybe sometimes guests forget there's family and kids

    around.

A5: Anything else you want me to squeeze in there that I may have

missed? DJ: If people are looking for an amazingly fun night, we are the

ones to hire. We are the full package. I get people fired up with my Emcee

and entertainer skills. We do games with couples, activities with the audience

to get them involved, raffles, prizes. Our motto is to serve our client with the

highest of professionalism for maximum entertainment and fun. No one has

been disappointed. We guarantee fun. Not many DJ's can do that. How can

people book you? I welcome everyone to Like our Mace Productions page at www.facebook.com/dj-

mace4. Or send me a friend request, facebook.com/djmace. They can also call (701) 317-6690 for

    2014 RED RIVER VALLEY

    MOTORCYCLISTS SHOW

TO OFFICIALLY KICKSTART SPRING!BY Jeff Peterson

Spring is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life being

born. The term is also used more generally as a metaphor for

the start of better times. (Wikipedia) Well readers, those of us

motorcycle folks that live here in the northern extremities thor-

oughly embrace that metaphor! Ground hogs be damned,

spring around here is loudly announced by chrome exhaust, V-

twin rumble, and the Red River Valley Motorcyclists (RRVM)

    2014 Motorcycle Show.

On Saturday, April 12th and Sunday, April 13th the Red River

Valley Motorcyclists will again host what has become the

largest motorcycle show in North Dakota. The Alerus Center in

Grand Forks will open its doors at 9:00 each day and will close

at 7:00 pm on Saturday and 4:00 pm on Sunday.

Its often said that bikers are one of the most generous of per-

sonalities and the RRVM group is always out to prove the alle-

gation; they are the first organization to recognize and support

the proposed Sunshine Home project. This year the majority of

proceeds will be dedicated to the proposed Sunshine Hospital-

ity Home. The Sunshine Hospitality Home will be a place for

patients and their families, affected by critical illnesses, dis-

eases, and injuries, who must travel to fulfill their healthcare

needs. The Home will provide individuals with a place to sleep,

eat, keep their belongings, relax and find comfort. It will be

open to all ages and situations and will welcome families from

the Grand Forks area and surrounding region, said Donovan

Larson, CEO and Executive Director of the Sunshine Memorial

Foundation, This is a project for the community, by a commu-

nity group, to fulfill a need that you may never use but will be

there if you ever need it. For more information on the Sun-

shine Hospitality Home Project, how to get involved in the pro-

ject or how to donate, please contact them [email protected].

There will be a live auction Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm that

proceeds will be donated to the Sunshine fund, a proposed Vet-

erans Memorial Park, Salvation Army, ABATEs Little Spoke

Fund (motorcycle education), and the VFW.

Every year gets better and bigger, said Tim Gowan, President

of the RRVM, Well have more vendors and more bikes on

display. Its going to be another great year. This year there will

be a 2014 Harley Davidson Street Glide Special from Andys

HD raffled off as well as a Sturgis themed electric guitar

painted by Wild Billz Kustomz. Motorcycle raffle tickets are

only $20 each (only 3,000 to be sold) and can be purchased at

Andys HD, Street is Neat in Oslo and at Rydell Chevrolet.

The fantastic Wiseguys along with Elvis will provide enter-

tainment on both days of the event. The North Dakota Patriot

Guard, Veterans of Foreign Wars and other area veteransgroups will be back again this year as well. The VFW will post

the Colors in a ceremony Sunday at 3:00 pm along with a flag

line formed by the Patriot Guard to honor our fallen soldiers.

The RRVM is a non-profit organization that, since 2001, has

    donated $214,000 to area charities.

Admission to the show is still only $5. Motorcycle entry, ven-

dor registrations forms, and if you would like to become an

event sponsor please visit the RRVM website at

    POMPEIIBy Christy Lemire of ChristyLemire.com

Is it wrong to root for the volcano?

Mount Vesuvius is the most interesting and expressive character

of all in Pompeii, a mind-numbingly dull and unintentionally

    hilarious sword-and-sandal epic/disaster flick/romance. (Who

says you cant have it all?) Director Paul W.S. Anderson, he of the

Resident Evil franchise, takes one part Gladiator, one part

Titanic, one part The Horse Whisperer and pieces of various

70s end-of-the-world dramas, mixes them all up and smothers

    them with cheese. And lava.

In the middle of all this mayhem, we are supposed to care about

the blossoming forbidden romance between hunky slave boy Milo

(Kit Harington of Game of Thrones) and rebellious rich girl

Cassia (Emily Browning). Their beauty is matched only by their

blandness, and when they stop to look longingly into one an-

others eyes to pitch woo as Pompeii burns and collapses all

around them, youre more likely to giggle than swoon. I was also

tempted to scream at the screen: Run! Run you idiots! Quit

canoodling and get the hell out of there! No one would have

heard me anyway over the films incessant roar.

But first! We get back story. As a child during ancient times, Milo

watched as marauding Romans brutally killed his parents and his

entire clan of Celtic horsemen. Leading the charge was the evil

Corvus, played with scenery-chewing villainy by Kiefer Suther-

land. Forced into slavery, Milo transformed himself over the years

into a quick and wily fighter, becoming so famous and formidable

that hes known simply as The Celt. He also found time to go to

the gym, apparently, as well as to the beauty supply store for hair

    product.

Flash forward to 79 A.D. Milo and Cassia meet cute along a dirt

road when the carriage bringing her home to Pompeii crashes, se-

verely injuring one of the horses. Milo, whod been walking

alongside the carriage with his fellow slaves in a chain gang,

bends down and puts the horse out of its misery. Naturally, Cassia

    is instantly smitten.

Their paths cross again at her familys villa, where she has re-turned to live with her parents, Pompeian power couple Severus

(Jared Harris) and Aurelia (Carrie-Anne Moss), after spending a

rocky year in Rome. Cassias family is throwing a lavish party as

part of an annual festival, with planned entertainment including

gladiators beating each other to a bloody pulp and slashing each

other to bits. Among them is you guessed it our generically

sexy hero, whos scheduled to battle to the death against the reign-

ing champion, Atticus (the intimidating Adewale Akinnuoye-Ag-

baje). But of course, because theyre supposed to kill each other,

    they become best friends.

(Long before the volcano goes boom, Pompeii is extremely vio-

lent, with a surprising amount of blood for a PG-13 movie. Im

still not exactly sure why there were kids around 8 years old at the

    screening I attended.)

Also in town for the festivities is Corvus, whos now a corrupt

Roman senator. This allows Milo to do his version of the you-

killed-my-father, prepare-to-die speech from The Princess Bride

when he sees Corvus again for the first time since he was a child.

But Corvus also has his eye on Cassia and insists on dragging her

back to Rome to make her his trophy wife.

All the while, the volcano watches and waits and rumbles and

grumbles. And when it finally blows, it is a rather impressive

spectacle to behold. (Say what you will about Andersons movies,

but he does use 3-D rather effectively.) Fireballs shoot in every di-

rection, sending the innocent people of Pompeii scurrying for

safety. Some of them seem to have a GPS tracking system embed-

ded within them, they hit their targets with such speed and accu-

racy. And the pandemonium that occurs at the harbor when the

fury of the volcanos force causes massive waves, is admittedly a

kind of awesome sight in all its glossy computer-generated glory.

If only the people in peril were as engaging.

THE LEGO MOVIEBy Christy Lemire of ChristyLemire.com

The Lego Movie: Merely a great film, or the greatest film ever

    in the history of cinema?

I asked this question jokingly, rhetorically during our What

the Flick?! review, but the more I think about it, the more in awe I

am of the way The Lego Movie works on every level for every

possible viewer. Everything Is Awesome isnt just an insanely

catchy theme song, one that will be stuck in your head for days if

not weeks afterward (and may even drive out Let It Go from

Frozen, if youre lucky). Its a statement of fact. It may even be

    an understatement.

Thats not a typo at the top I really am giving this movie four

stars. You know that old cliched response after walking out of a

movie or a play: I laughed, I cried? This time, its really true. I

laughed my ass off and then I cried. A 3-D, animated movie

about a bunch of tiny pieces of plastic made me cry. And you guys

who have read me for a while know that Im cold and soulless andnot usually susceptible to the power of tearjerkery. But thats one

of the many reasons I loved The Lego Movie so much: It kept

    surprising me.

Actually, my husband, Chris, and I ended up liking the movie

even better than Nicolas did and hes the one who was super-

pumped to go see it, inspired by the ubiquity of marketing all

around town. (Warner Bros.: You guys sure know how to reach

    your target audience of 4-year-olds.)

It moves so beautifully, it has such irresistible humor and irre-

pressible energy, but always feels effortless. Its jammed with af-

fectionate, cheeky pop-culture references but never seems hacky

or strains for the laugh; so many of the jokes fly by at such a gid-

dily frenzied clip, youll probably have to go see the movie a sec-

ond time just to catch them all. And you probably wont mind

doing that; The Lego Movie is the rare film based on a toy or a

game that truly feels like its own unique universe rather than a

    shameless, extended infomercial.

Did we mention the voice cast? We havent even gotten to the ex-

ceptional voice cast yet. So often with animated movies, the A-liststunt casting serves as a distraction and takes you out of the narra-

tive. Here, it provides one of the many opportunities for directors

and co-writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to take estab-

lished genre conventions and turn them on their heads, similar to

their inspired version of 21 Jump Street. Morgan Freeman, for

example, plays a blind mystic whose prophecy sends an ordinary

guy on an extraordinary heros journey. But in doing so, he know-

ingly pokes fun at his propensity for playing God-like figures, his

rich voice providing both gravitas and goofy laughs.

The increasingly endearing Chris Pratt provides the voice of

Emmet, a regular construction-worker drone who always follows

the rules and does whats expected of his in his incessantly perky,

if regimented, Lego town. Much of the humor comes from the

way in which the characters world mirrors ours, with its over-

priced coffee, crowded commutes, idiotic sitcoms and overplayed

radio tunes. Everything is awesome, as the song goes, but every

    day is exactly the same.

But one day, Emmet stumbles upon a random piece of red plastic

thats unlike the rest of the interlocking bricks that surround him.

It is the Piece of Resistance, a crucial component of the prophecy

that Freemans character, Vitruvius, told of at the beginning. And

in finding it, Emmet becomes known as The Special the one

who will save the Lego universe from ultimate destruction. He

gets help from a ragtag band of strangers including a bad-ass Goth

chick who goes by the name Wyldstyle (an adorable Elizabeth

Banks); Batman (Will Arnett, doing a Batman version of his

pompous Arrested Development character, Gob); a makeshift

pirate captain called Metal Beard (Nick Offerman); and the un-

flappably happy Unikitty (Alison Brie) which is you guessed it

    half unicorn and half kitty.

They must outsmart and outrun the evil President Business, better

known as Lord Business, who wants the piece for himself to

maintain order and separation between all the Lego realms. So

yeah, hes kind of a fascist tyrant. But in the hands of Will Ferrell,

hes also hilariously self-serious. President Business right-handman is the bi-polar Good Cop/Bad Cop (Liam Neeson), who dons

whichever persona he must to get the job done and keep everyone

    in line.

The Lego Movie message of thinking for yourself and trying

new things may sound a lot like theme of The Croods last year,

but it presents this notion in a much more lively and clever man-

ner. A great deal of that has to do with the look of the animation,

which is beautiful in its crudeness. While the images are com-

puter-generated, they have the intentionally jumpy, rough-hewn

look of stop-motion animation as if the effects team had moved

brick by brick painstakingly by hand to create the sensation of

motion. Everything is made of Legos, from the people and vehi-

cles to water and bullets. It is an endless joy to watch, and the fact

that some of the pieces and characters faces have a chip or a

smudge here or there adds to the charm.

Just when you may start feeling like this zippy thrill ride of a

movie is exhausting you, it takes a third-act turn that you probablynever would have seen coming. I wouldnt dream of giving any-

thing away about it. But I will say that its daring, profound and

emotionally powerful in a way that caught me completely off

guard especially sitting in the theater with my 4-year-old son

    curled up in my lap.

ASK THE FITNESS GALExpert Answers to

    Your Health &

    Wellness Quetions

    By Jaimie

    Miesel

    Question: Is it

    beneficial to get my

    body fat percent-

    age checked and, if

    so, what method

    provides the best result?

Answer: Whether or not you get your body fat checked depends

on how meticulous you are when it comes to your own health and

wellness. Some people are perfectly content to just workout and

watch what happens. Others want to track and analyze everythingand, as a result, like to have a starting point for body fat, amongst

other things. If youre in this latter group, then go ahead and get a

test done. There are numerous ways to analyze your body fat per-

centage, from the very expensive to the ridiculously inexpensive,

and the very accurate to the incredibly inaccurate. Some of the

best methods include getting a DEXA scan, a Bod Pod measure-

ment, or getting underwater weighed. However, these are the

more expensive options, and require sophisticated equipment and

skilled technicians. When it comes to cost, accuracy, and practi-

cality, you really cant go wrong with a skinfold caliper test. It

takes about 5 minutes, it might cost you $10-$50 (depending on

whether a consult is included or not), and its reasonably accurate.

You just need to find a personal trainer, or other health profes-

sional, that has done hundreds or even thousands of tests. And re-

member, the initial number isnt necessarily all that important

anyway. You just need a starting pointthen, as long as that num-

ber trends down over time to reach a health range to maintain,

thats all that really matters, right?

Question: Im a recreational basketball player and someone

recently recommended plyometrics to me to enhance my per-

formance on the court. Good idea?

Answer: Plyometric exercises are used to increase the speed and

force of muscular contractions, so if youre serious about improv-

ing all areas of your game, they would be a nice addition to your

current training routine. You just need to make sure youre in

good enough shape first. A good, solid fitness base is required,

meaning you should be relatively strong, flexible, coordinated, and agile. The exercises tend to generate large forces thanks to the

intense, repetitive movements, so the risk of injury can be high.

Its best to do plyometrics on a soft surface, and with supervision,

since proper technique is of greatest importance. You also want to

be careful about what exercises you select if youre over 250

pounds. Lastly, its ideal if youre well-rested and injury-free be-

fore engaging in these types of workouts. Try to find a qualified

trainer or coach that can help you incorporate plyometrics into

your training and, as always, make sure they have experience in

    this particular area.

Question: A friend of mine eats 5-6 smaller meals each day

and keeps telling me that I should be doing the same. Are

there actually any benefits to doing this, especially if 3 meals

    per day are satisfying?

Answer: Experts have been telling us to eat more frequently

throughout the day for years now. And their advice says that in-

creasing your meal frequency will increase your metabolism andhelp with weight loss. The theories behind these perceived bene-

fits are good, but unfortunately, there isnt enough research to say

which is better. In fact, numerous studies indicate that increasing

the number of meals consumed per day has very little impact on

overall food intake and body composition. This makes sense since

increased frequency doesnt seem to strongly affect total daily en-

ergy expenditure or resting metabolic rate either. We need to

focus more on quality food we are eating rather than just smaller

meals. There may be some benefit when it comes to appetite con-

trol, maintaining blood sugar levels and satiety. If your energy

level waxes and wanes throughout the day, then eating more fre-

quently may be advantageous. But if youre satisfied eating three

squares a day, then by all means, continue to do so.

    TIPS TO SUPPORT A

HEALTHY LIFESTYLEFamily FeaturesIf the decadent dishes and busy schedules of the holiday season

have set back your efforts towards a healthy lifestyle, fear not.

With the right plan in place, it's easy to get back on track, re-ener-

gized and refocused for the year ahead.

Shorter days and colder weather may seem to heighten the desire

to indulge in comfort foods, just as much as it can lessen the moti-

vation to take part in physical activity, like hitting the gym or tak-

    ing an afternoon stroll.

Health expert, author and registered dietitian, Patricia Bannan,

shares a few simple changes to help re-charge your routine and

get excited, no matter what the thermometer reads outside:

    Set realistic expectations

If you haven't been running in months and plan to jump on thetreadmill tomorrow, it's important to take your new workout in

stride. Having high aspirations for your health is a wonderful

thing, but there's nothing wrong with starting small. Setting

achievable goals - such as jogging or walking for a certain

amount of time each day - will help to keep you working toward

the goal of running a10K in the long term.

    Buddy up

By now you've likely commiserated with friends about the lapse

in your health and wellness goals. This is the perfect opportunity

to ask someone to partner up in your healthy pursuits. Ask

friends, family, neighbors or co-workers if they are interested in

joining a gym, taking a boot camp class, or participating in a

    healthy cooking course.

Supply your body with quality nutrition

Beyond getting in your required fruits, vegetables, lean proteins,

healthy fats and whole grains through a balanced diet, taking a

high quality supplement can help bridge any nutrient gaps andhelp you get what your body may be lacking. Bannan recom-

mends Adult Gummies Energy B12 from Nature Made(r), the #1

pharmacist recommended brand of letter vitamins.1 Vitamin B12

supports cellular energy production by helping the body convert

food into energy, and gummies offer an enjoyable way to take

    your vitamins.

    Swap out ingredients

Healthier alternatives exist for all of your favorite dishes. If you

crave a hearty bowl of chili, switch out ground beef for a leaner

variety of ground turkey. Use whole-grain pasta in your favorite

Italian dishes or whole-grain breads for sandwiches. These

changes are small, but can have a big impact on your overall nu-

    trition when put into practice.

By incorporating a few of these simple tips into your daily well-

ness routine, you'll be on the path to a healthier new you. For

    THOUGHTS, WINTER,

MOVIES AND A QUARTER-LIFE CRISIS. AND TINDERby Taylor Brost

It seems each month draws to a close faster than the last. I usually

write about movies coming out or just TV and movies Ive loved

and want other people to love. But this time of the year is usually

a pretty rough period for movies, and new TV series seem to be

drawing to a close, I think Ill just write, to write. I offer my

thoughts on our shortest month, now passed, and our current

    month of March.

    February:

Dear God its cold. No wonder this month is so short.

The Oscars. I dont care what anyone says, with a powerful sub-

ject like 12 Years of Slave, you cant tell me it should have been

beat by an hour and a half of a CGI Sandra Bullock in space. Solid

    wins all across the board.

Maybe if we exterminated groundhogs, winter wouldnt last so

    long: just a thought.

If a new season of House of Cards came out every Valentines

Day, there would be a lot less lonely people in the world.

If you saw Julia Roberts at the Academy Awards, you know she

still got it. Do yourself a favor and watch Notting Hill.

I lost my phone on the last day of February, and it turns out, pay-

    phones still exist.

Im really glad February is over. Brr.

    March:

All right lets look at this movie lineup for March releases. Wes

Andersons The Grand Budapest Hotel, which looks every bit as

witty, smart and quirky as every film Anderson touches. Bad

Words starring Jason Bateman is the raunchy comedy that doesnt

actually lower your IQ in the process. Divergent: the sci-fi novel

film adaptation with my future girlfriend Shailene Woodley. And

then we have Noah. Russell Crowe plays every character hes ever

played and my future wife Emma Watson acts her little heart out.

So we should have a little something for everyone this month.

Remember when there were four different seasons?

In 1956, Elvis Presley predicted the future by recording the song

Love Me Tinder. All right maybe thats not factually correct,

but no one could have predicted the mass appeal of the phone app

Tinder, first released almost a year and a half ago. With the largest

demographic of users aged 18-35, this quasi-dating app has blown

up at college campuses around the nation within the last year. Its

popularity in large part is due to its versatility. Its a way to meet

new people in a new city. Its a way to find that casual hook-up. It

can lead to serious relationship (and then you can explain to your

future kids you met mommy on a phone app). Its a way to killtime and laugh with your friends, comparing matches and judging

ridiculous profiles after a few drinks. Most importantly it boosts

self-esteem and opens the door for conversation that one can only

assume is welcome after a match has been made. Its much easier

to strike up conversation with someone you know wants to talk to

you. Here are a few tips Ive picked up on along the way.

    Gentleman:

    1. There is a right time and

place for a smiley. It should be

used like a fine red wine, in

    moderation. Start your conver-

sation with What are you up

to tonight :) and you wont get

    many responses.

    2. Comment on content not

looks. If you swiped right therewas obviously a physical at-

    traction, so what now? Ive

    gotten more positive reactions

    by talking about something

written in a bio than telling a

    girl how attractive she is.

    3. Leave your shirt on. Bro,

Im sure you look great after

that workout today, but I prom-

ise 9 out of 10 girls showed

your profile to her friends and they all had a good laugh. Maybe I

am wearing skinny jeans, and maybe I havent worked out since

    08. I dont see your point

    Ladies:

As if you needed help getting a guy to swipe rightbut here it

    goes anyway.

    1. Those four close-ups of your face a greatbut what are you

    hiding?

    2. Skip the group photos. You dont have to prove you have

friends. And I dont want to spend 20 minutes guessing which one

    you are.

    3. I know how shallow this sounds. But swimsuits.

But really just keep things light-hearted. Dont be a weirdo. And

as Elvis would have wanted, dont be cruel, to a heart thats true.

I turn 24 this month. When Im not tindering or complaining about

winter, Im having my quarter life crisis. Im asking myself all the

important questions. Should I stop using smiley faces in my texts?

Should I get a dog or a girlfriend? Should I trade my piggy bank in

for bills, or save the quarters for laundry?

In middle school I thought I would be a professional athlete. As a

freshman in high school I got cut from both basketball and golf.

Golf, you read that right. In speech class as a senior I thought I

would be a blackjack dealer or an air traffic controller. Im about

to quit my job at a call center to go work in the oilfields of North

Dakota. You dont have to know what youre doing in life, you

just have to enjoy it and do everything to the best of your ability.

Wisdom. Ill sum all this up with a little haiku.

    Julia Roberts

    Believe in global warming

    Movies, Tinder, life.
