NHS News Submitted by Ms. Neiss

The National Honor Society is having a blood drive on March 21st in the gymnasium. Please

consider giving blood.

The next senior trip $100 deposit will be

due by March 15th. The cost per student is

$355. If you have not already paid the first

$100 in deposits back in October and

November, please include the remainder in

this deposit. We expect to have earned $66

per student to offset costs. This may not

seem like a lot, but it represents over $6000

in support and fundraisers that have come

in to help out the class. We need to equally

divide the support per student. We are also

waiting to see if we get approved for any

Arts In Education grants.

Without any future aid, we will be collecting

a final payment of $89 (or less) on Friday,

April 28.

Upcoming senior fundraisers

Car Wash – Sunday, April 23rd

The Phoenix Indoor Percussion

Ensemble is working diligently to

put together their 2017 program

entitled "Rebuild." The reason

behind the name is because this is a

"Rebuilding" year for the program—

meaning the ensemble has a lot of

new members. If you are interested

in supporting the ensemble, you can

On January 10 JCB students represented

our high school at this year’s Sr. High All

December for the honor and were accepted

based on their preparation of scales, sight

reading, and two prepared pieces.

Our Cheerleading team won the Class B Section 3 title and will be competing

in the State Championships on Saturday, March 4th at the SRC Arena (OCC

Campus)! CONGRATS, JCB CHEERLEADERS!!!

Cheerleader News

The weekend of February 25th and 26th found

Sophomores “Killer” Cahal Donovan and Ross

“Da Boss” McFarland competing at the Times

Union Arena for the NYSPHSAA NY State

Championships.

Cahal Donovan dominated his first 2

opponents 15-1 and 15-0 before losing to

2X NY State Champion and National Runner

up Orion Anderson of Schuylerville 8-4.

In the consolations, Cahal won 4-2 and then

lost a close 3-2 decision to last years 113 lb.

State Champion to place 4th.

Ross “Da Boss” won 4-1, 12-0 and 11-1 to get

into the finals against 3 time NY State

Champion Hunter Richard of Holland Patent.

Ross lost in the finals of the Class B, Division 2

Sectionals and States last year and was

hoping to get revenge. Ross aggressively

Wrestling News Submitted by Coach Mills

attacked Hunter for 6 long minutes. It

looked like Ross was pushing the pace so

hard that the returning Champion was

ready to fold. Ross got scored on in the

last 15 seconds of the 3rd

period and lost

a tough match. Ross repeated at the NY

State Runner up to Hunter Richard again

who is committed to attend Cornell

University next year.

Both these young men worked harder in

one year than most people do in a lifetime

to achieve their goals. They both fell short

of their goals to win a State title, but

believe it will be in the cards for these 2

hard working young men to win it their

last 2 years each. Congrats to Cahal and

da Boss!

Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables follows the

life of prisoner-on-parole, Jean Valjean, as he runs from the

ruthless Inspector Javert. Meanwhile, the life of a working class

girl with a child is shattered as she turns to prostitution to pay the

vile innkeeper and his wife for continued care of her daughter,

Cosette. Valjean promises to take care of the child, eventually

following the duo’s lives ten years later into the barricades and in

the midst of a rebellion.

The staff and students involved with this year’s musical have been

eagerly working away since late December. If you have caught any

of the local news articles, Mr. Logee (director) was interviewed for

the creation of a turntable s tyle s tage that

rotates mid-scene. "’Les Mis on Broadway had a rotating stage,’"

Mr. Logee mentioned during his interview. "’That's the artistry of

it. The stage changes the whole way the scenes are portrayed.

There are no breaks in the music, so with the rotating stage,

the action never stops’" (Brenda Duncan, Phoenix students to

perform 'Les Miserables' on rotating stage).

As a personal witness, I can say that all of the staff and

students involved have put in a tremendous amount of effort and

energy to create the story of Les Misérables right in our very own

high school. Support the drama club by coming to hear the

people sing March 9th at 4:30, March 10th at 7:30, and

March 11th at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm. Tickets are $7 for

students and senior citizens and $10 for adults.

My Ocean By: Marissa Moore

Tears threaten to spill

I blink them away

I can’t cry

I refuse to

But if I did shed them

How much would there be

A teaspoon, a cup,

A whole ocean

An ocean of sadness

The salty tears

The old car

honks and beeps.

The blinkers click,

BOOM!

There go the brakes.

Woof, moo, oink, neigh,

here we go in to the hay.

SPLASH!

Into the lake we go.

Violent violets sway

in the vast valley,

vaguely venting my worries

of the vicious cultures in my mind.

Their venomous vibes making me a visible victim

to their velvet victory

within my very vacant head,

giving me vivid views

of their vice verses,

filling my veins with a virus of dread.

The overwhelming sound

of clanging metal

against metal.

being refined by large hammers,

being wielded

and swung

by large burly men

made me jump

as I walked

through the large

squeaky door

into the clash of sounds

that filled my ears.
