Strathmore’s first Whole Health Expo will be open for business this weekend. The two-day event be-gins on March 31 at the Civic Cen-tre, and will boast feature speakers and demonstrations, vendors, and a screening of the movie ‘Happy’ in the evening.

“We’re really excited about it, it’s something new is what it is. We’re trying to develop something that is just a little different,” said organiz-er Becky Stone.

Stone says the Expo will be a place that offers different options and ideas that are available in the health world. Approximately 25 ex-hibitors will be sharing their views.

“What we would like to do is cre-ate a place where people can come and talk about those ideas and dis-play those ideas. That will range in everything from alternative thera-pies, to fitness to healthy eating, to healthy minds, and healthy hearts and healthy souls,” said Stone.

“It becoming apparent that in or-der for us to really truly take con-trol of our the health of our lives, we have to step up into the leader-ship role of our own life. So this is the place to go and learn about some things that are available in the community.

“We look forward to having it grow, because there are so many wonderful ideas, services and products out there that can help us achieve better health and whole health.”

The doors are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the 31, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 1. Admis-sion is either a non-perishable food donation or $2. Each admis-sion also enters people into the door prize draw. All monies raised from the entries will be donated to Growing Families, and the food will be donated to the Wheatland Food Bank.

After council defeated a motion to track city status expenses, residents were upset, thinking there was some-thing to hide.

At the March 12 meeting Councillor Dave Hamilton made a motion to track all costs associated with the research and process to change from town status to city status. This doesn’t include the hourly wages for administration to con-duct the research process as this cost falls within the parameters of their day-to-day duties and responsibilities.

“That was my original position, was that all costs should be tracked and the reason for that was because it’s been mentioned be members of this council that this would be a minimal cost,” said Councillor Bob Sobol.

“Well in order to find out if it was a minimal cost or not I felt, and still do, that all costs including staff wages

should be included in the tracking pro-cess.”

Sobol said he doesn’t feel including the simple operational costs will give the real picture on how much the pro-cess is really costing.

“This council is not hiding anything, the fact of the matter is that as the mo-tion is asking for the cost of staff’s time to write this out and put this together is part of their daily work hours and therefore I don’t believe that it belongs in here,” said Councillor Earl Best.

Best feels any other costs involved certainly need to be tracked. Mayor Steve Grajczyk has also heard from people that council is trying to hide something.

“This is just clarifying the fact that we are not trying to hide anything. I thought it was clear enough last week, or the week before, that we didn’t want administration’s time tracked, it’s im-possible to track, we would have to get a tracker for the tracker,” said Grajczyk.

Strathmore RCMP Staff Sgt. Larry Marzinzik spoke to council about an enhanced traffic enforcement proposal he would like to implement on a trial basis. The idea would be for the town and the RCMP to enter into a Memoran-dum of Understanding (MOU) to pro-vide enhanced enforcement similar to what Chestermere currently has.

In Chestermere a yearly budget of $125,000 is used to pay-off duty RCMP officers for extra traffic enforcement in targeted areas.

Marzinzik was requesting a six-month to one-year pilot project, with funding of $4,000 per month. The officers as-signed to the extra enforcement would focus solely on the traffic assignment allowing them to complete any paper-work that arises from it by the comple-tion of their shift.

The goal would be to target any ar-eas the public and/or council are con-cerned with. Discussion of the propos-al was accepted as information, with only Councillor Bob Sobol in favour of drawing up an MOU right away.

Making her rounds


The Mayor and Councillor code of ethics and conduct policy was brought forward to council for approval with a few amendments.

The policy is to ensure that council and the Mayor avoid situations where public per-ception may be that they have used their position to gain a personal or pecuniary benefit.

According to clause 2.9, Council and the Mayor are not to apply for employment within the town, or to seek a service to supply contract.

In clause 3.3.7 it is written that it is the sole responsibil-ity of the Chief Administra-tive Officer (CAO) to hire, discipline, and terminate

staff. The clause also states that no member of council, either as an individual or as a group, shall interfere with the CAO’s role by way of co-ercion, persuasion, or any form of influence.

Councillor Earl Best was not in agreement with clause 2.9 and said even if a coun-cillor were to apply for a job with the town, they would still be subject to the inter-views and other criteria any other applicant would face.

Best admits to having ap-plied for a job with the town, and said though he did not get it he has no animosity to-wards administration.

“When we came on to council there was nothing saying we could not apply for a job with the town, in that case I would like to see

this particular part (2.9) of this pulled from here and maybe brought back the week before the next elec-tion,” said Best.

“I don’t have any mistrust or misgivings about Council-lor Best at all, but I’m won-dering why we would want to grandfather it, or delay it, when the policy is actually morally right and the pub-lic is waiting for us to make a decision like this,” said Councillor Pat Fule.

Fule said he has spoken to couple of councillors in Can-more who were surprised to hear that Strathmore did not have such a policy in place.

Though Best agreed with the rest of council that a code of ethics and conducts policy is needed, he said clause 2.9 is an issue of contention with

him, and therefore he would not vote in favour of it.

Councillor Rocky Blokland said he agrees with Best on some of his comments, Blok-land thinks clause 2.9 should be added.

“We have elections every three years, you put your name in, you run for coun-cil as either a new council-lor or one coming back from previous council. I think at that point in time you have to make a decision, if you’re going to be successful as a councillor that’s what you should be, without trying to apply for positions with-in the town of Strathmore. I just don’t think the two should be mixed up,” said Blokland.

The Strathmore and District Agricul-tural Society welcomed a new presi-dent, if not a new face, earlier this year. Carolyn Johnson has been involved with the Ag Society for years as the Vice-President, a director, and a com-mittee head for the grandstands. It was on Jan. 1 when she accepted her new role, and she has been looking at ways to help make the Ag Society even bet-ter.

“My major thing is get more youth involved,” said Johnson.

“We need more help. The rodeo bunch is getting to be older people and we call it, we need more bones in the seats.”

Her first objective is bringing in more youth, whether it’s to help with Heritage Days, or as spectators. John-son’s second objective is to have the grounds used more, outside of Heri-tage Days activities.

“As president you got to look at all the areas, you have to have things for family, you have to use the grounds more, we have a campground too,”

said Johnson. Heritage Days is the main focus at

this point. August is coming up fast, and work has already begun for ob-taining sponsorship and getting volun-teers on board.

“It takes a lot of work, we’ve got a great bunch of volunteers and then the directors and vice president get in-volved. Then we have a general man-ager and a secretary in the office that do a lot of work and a lot of prep to getting that rodeo going,” said John-son.

This year, due to an unexpected can-cellation from the midway, there is an added scramble to find new entertain-ment to fill the gap. The Ag Society is looking for suggestions from the com-munity on how to fill the space.

After raising $5,881 last year with a charity lamb, siblings Landon and Kylee Hebbes raised $1,300 through a hospital web page for the Alberta Chil-dren’s Hospital. Remedy for rural fire check delaySharon McLeayTime Contributor

Some of the rural fire departments were concerned that the Fire Capital and Operating funds were held by the county.

Staff clarified that five Associa-tions were paid but Cluny, Gleichen, Rockyford and Standard Associations still had some missing information to complete on the capital holdings template. This was necessary before the cheque could be issued.

The reports required more detail, such as itemization of the equipment purchased, held and sold. Rockyford and Standard associations have joint agreements with those respective towns. There was a misunderstanding that the summary information from the towns was sufficient for payment. There was a suggested template de-livered to each association that would help them itemize those items. The confusion stemmed from differing re-porting methods.

“It is the first year for the new for-mat,” Said Gerald Skibinsky, Protec-tion Services Manager. He felt that the streamlined process and using the template would help to facilitate a faster payout delivery.

Council approved the template in 2009. Councillor Ken Sauve said they set up the templates to assist the as-sociations in their bookkeeping ac-tivities.

“They need to get the information to Pat Lietch (CFO) and the cheque will be cut,” said Councillor Ben Arm-strong.FIRE ASSOCIATIONS COORDI-

formed council that a mutual agree-ment between Dalum, Cluny, Rocky-ford and Rosebud Fire Associations was made to respond to fire callouts. All the halls rigs will be dispatched to structure fires in any of the respective areas. Jensen said that previous poli-cy of waiting to assess the fire before calling for additional help was not al-ways effective and placed too much pressure on one person to make the call. The halls have different equip-ment that when combined make all the difference in structure fire situa-tions.

“If you don’t roll all at once you are beat,” said Jensen.

Jensen said a verbal agreement was forthcoming with Hussar and was hoping to include or share the idea with other associations once the pro-cedure was tested and documented.WASHOUT COMPENSATION

An area ratepayer along road 270 requested compensation for a wash-out that caused damage to his land and corrals last April.

“It did make quite a mess,” con-firmed Councillor Don Vander Velde.

Crews confirmed that they did go in and fixed a washout near the prop-erty.

“There were washouts all over the county that day. The flooding in Carseland was all the same day,” com-mented Public Works Manager Gerry Van Oostwaard.

The move was to target libraries that were having trouble keeping their doors open, but all libraries within the Wheatland county boundaries could submit a request for funds. The Village of Hussar celebrated the 10th year of their wonderful recreation centre on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The celebration started with a eight-team curling funspiel with players ranging from seven to 60 plus. Over at the arena, there was shinny, family skating and relay races. Baked Egg Muffins

6 slices bacon 1 1/2 tbsp butter, melted

1 1/2 tbsp maple syrup 6 slices bread, crusts removed

6 eggs Salt and black pepper to taste

6 tbsp heavy cream 6 tbsp shredded Cheddar cheese

Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet, and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on a paper towel-lined plate; crumble and set aside.Preheat an oven to 375. Grease muffin cups.Combine the melted butter and maple syrup in a small bowl. Flatten a piece of bread with a rolling pin. Brush the bread with the butter mixture. Line the muffin cup with the flattened bread. Repeat with the remaining bread slices. Bake in a preheated oven until the bread crisps, about 3 to 5 minutes.Sprinkle crumbled bacon into the bottom of the toast cups. Crack an egg into each cup. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Top each egg with 1 tablespoon of heavy cream and 1 tablespoon cheese. Bake until the whites are just set, about 10 to 14 minutes or until the eggs are cooked to your taste.

Westmount Elementary students have busy re-hearsing for their upcoming roles in Tam Lin and the Faerie Queen for months. On April 3 all their hard work is going to pay off when the students are able to proudly unveil the production. The play fol-lows the story of Tam Lin, who has been cursed by the Faerie Queen, and his desire to save Seonaid, whom he has fallen in love with.

“It’s a storyline that I could easily adapt to fit about 40 kids. So I take a story line and then write a script,” said Dana Graff, associate principal of Westmount and director of the play.

“I don’t turn anybody down, anybody who tries out for the play gets a role.”

Graff has found over the years that when he buys the script he is always adding scenes and rework-ing things to make sure all of the students have a role. Now Graff finds the storyline and writes his own script.

Graff said each production is really a community

effort, with members of the staff and parents help-ing with building and painting the sets, getting ev-erything organized, the costumes and the makeup.

“It just takes so many people to put it on and there’s a lot of help from staff members and volun-teers,” said Graff.

Some of the students have been learning to High-land dance for some of the scenes. Originally all six or seven dance acts were going to be Highland dancing, but after realizing how hard it is to learn, it has been cut down to two dance scenes.

Drama at Westmount is an extra curricular activ-ity, and every year 35 to 40 students willingly give up some of their free time to rehearse and prepare for the performance.

There will be four shows total on April 3 and 4, two matinees beginning at 1 p.m. and two evening shows beginning at 7p.m. Seniors in the commu-nity have been invited to watch the April 4 matinee for free, and enjoy a cup of tea and a treat.

Tickets to the performance are $5 per person, and the money raised will be put towards the new playground funds.

Tam Lin and the Faerie Queen

Hub bash anniversary!

Last year the Strathmore Fire Department (SFD) created their own 2012 calendar and asked local businesses if they would like to donate items for their draw. On March 23 the businesses were invited to receive a tour of the department, enjoy drinks and appetizers, and pull the names out of the hat. Just over $5,000 was generated and the funds will go to equipment, training and improvements in the fire hall. There are calendars still available, now being sold for $10 each. The winners include: G & C Widmeyer, J. Lachapelle, R. Parkins, M. Pinchbeck, A. Schoer, G. Helfrich, S. McCraig, L. Owel and Global Training Centre.

There’s no better feeling than driving out on the open road; the sense of freedom is amazing. How-ever, some of that free feeling can be lost when you don’t know where you’re going!

I have no sense of direction. In fact, I have trou-ble telling where the four compass directions are. I think that’s why Debbie wanted a red van for our family vehicle. It’s easy to spot when wandering in a parking lot!

We also have a Silver mini-van, and I have come to rely on the key fob. When I’m lost and shuffling along in a parking lot, I’m the guy pressing the “lock” button on the fob, so I can hear the honking horn, and look for the van’s flashing lights! Actual-ly, another fun thing to do, is to hit the back hatch button, so that it swings up on any unsuspecting grocery bag boy! Great sport!

Deb and I were on an “Elvis” pilgrimage to Mis-sissippi and Tennessee … going to all of Elvis’s old haunts. We even ate a burger in the same restaurant booth that a young Elvis used in Tupelo! Tennessee was where I failed the “Husband-Direction Test.”

Debbie had given me a new GPS the previous Christmas, and I had promptly named it “Glenda” after the good witch. Driving in Nashville, I fol-lowed Glenda’s directions faithfully, until Deb felt “she” was wrong.

In fact, she said, “choose who you’re going to listen to, Glenda, or me?”

I was trapped … Deb’s my wife … but Glenda was a Christmas gift from Deb! Foolishly (for you new husbands out there), I chose Glenda. As Deb smirked, the GPS led me through turns, merges, and lights, to end up at my destination … a bar-ricaded dead end! Huh, I felt foolish … I had cho-sen Glenda over my wife! Deb smiled as I sadly unplugged Glenda for awhile.

Underground parkades can be strange places

to drive, as well. Have you ever caught yourself driving in a parkade, as you approach its overhead beams? Have you ever ducked while going under these? What good does it do us to duck INSIDE the vehicle going UNDER the beams, and yet we sometimes do!

Continuing on the topic of driving, merging into a lane can also be nerve-wracking. There have been times where I’ve said “thank you” to a guy who’s let me in. He can’t HEAR me … does he KNOW how to read lips? I doubt it, but I still find myself saying “thanks!”

On our short honeymoon trip to B.C. we bor-rowed the motorhome of Deb’s grandparents. We were moving along smoothly when we came to one of those Avalanche “tunnels” on the Trans-Canada. I obeyed the signs and turned on my headlight. As soon as we entered, something was wrong … I could barely see anything!

“Debbie, there’s something wrong with the head-lights … I knew we should have checked over ev-erything,” I said.

I quickly tried to focus in this darkened tunnel. She looked at me and smiled, then said, “take off your sunglasses, Pat.” Whew! We were safe again!

I’ve come to realize that while I am a good driver, I do need a good navigator that’s not a little elec-tronic device. Deb has a great sense of direction, and when I’m not with her … I take out Glenda. It even feels like I’m “stepping out” with another woman, when I tell people I’m taking out Glenda! Still, Deb and I make a good team: I drive and she tells me “where to go!” … and I do! Wait a minute … “I do”… those are the two words that got me in trouble 27 years ago!

To GPS, or not to GPS … that is the question!

As your MLA, I believe that I must be fully ac-countable to you, the residents of our communities, and that has always been my goal. Re-cently questions have been raised regard-ing the compensation received by MLA’s that served as members of the “All-Party Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections, Standard Orders and Printing.”

This particular committee met on sev-eral occasions in 2008, but has not met since then. Although its members from all political parties, myself included, had un-til recently continued to receive a monthly payment.

Compensation for MLAs has included a base amount, plus an additional payment for committee work for up to three committees. I also serve on several committees that do not include compensa-tion. I realize the current system of compensation for committee work simply does not make sense to Albertans and must be changed.

Premier Alison Redford has recognized the im-

portance of clarity with regard to this and all other MLA compensation and in November 2011 appoint-ed Justice John Major to undertake a review of this matter. I strongly support Premier Redford’s deci-sion to formally conduct this review.

Justice Major’s report is expected later this spring and I would like to commu-nicate publicly the steps I have taken in the interim. I have placed all of the com-pensation for sitting on the Committee on Privileges and Elections that I received from the date of the last meeting to the present into a separate bank account and have asked a small group of respected in-dividuals from within our communities to oversee this account.

They will review Justice Major’s report and recommendations. If the constituent group finds that in consideration of Justice Major’s rec-ommendations there is any indication I have been overpaid the funds will be returned to the province.

Personal integrity has always been important to me and I trust by taking this action and making it known in a public way you will recognize this is a very personal and strongly held belief.

To the EditorI read the Letter to the Editor last week with regard

to the locked gates preventing access to the canals located in and just outside of Strathmore. I also won-der why there is a lack of respect given to the resi-dents of Strathmore in allowing our town to access the canals.

In my opinion, the individuals that would use these canals are the type that would take care in making sure that they left a minimal foot print. In fact, over the years of using the canal in the past, I have often picked up garbage and closed the occasional open gate. The people that use paths like this are the kind of people that might leave it in better condition than it was before. What harm could be done walking or biking on a gravel road?

With a slightly increased usage, this might even prevent some of the unwanted motorized vehicles (the real abusers) that signs warn against. Walking or biking with your family is a great way to get ex-ercise, and with access to the canals, it seems like a very safe and peaceful way to stay away from traffic.

As a final thought … wouldn’t it be great if Strath-more, in conjunction with the WID, could be known as an area where recreation is a priority. Perhaps the Town of Strathmore and the WID could look into designating some of canals in and out of Strathmore as part of the Trans Canada Trail; two important ad-ministrations partnering to leave a legacy for genera-tions to come!

Open the gates to walk

To the EditorDo not let the PC’s fool you, ask yourself. Why the

PC government has mismanaged Alberta’s electric-ity generation and transmission system and Alberta families are paying the price?

Why Alberta’s current electricity system is stacked against power consumers – families and seniors who already have to deal with the rising cost of living?

Why power generators don’t pay any of the cost of new transmission lines which means 100 per cent of the costs plus nine per cent rate of return are passed on to consumers on their power bills?

Why the passage of the now – infamous Bill 50, The Electric Statutes Amendment Act, has promoted the construction of 16 billion dollars worth of new transmission lines across Alberta without proof they are needed. When major industry associations like the Industrial Power Consumers Associations are saying they have members who are looking at other Provinces to relocate to because they cannot to af-ford to stay.

As your future Wildrose MLA, I and the Wildrose are committed to the following actions:

REPEALING Bill 50 so consumers will have in-put as part of an independent needs assessment for transmission lines.

REDUCING transmission costs for consumers by ensuring new generators pay a share of future power line construction.

CREATING a level playing field so local generators can compete against distant generators to ultimately reduce costs for consumers.

REFORMING how electricity is bought and sold to reduce price spikes, such as the possible introduc-tion of a day-ahead market.

PROTECTING consumers who choose the regu-lated rate by returning to short-term and long-term pricing to allow for hedging.

ENCOURAGING reduced power use by providing tax rebates to consumers who invest in energy ef-ficiency measures.

Wildrose releases commitment to power consumers

To the EditorThere is a vast difference

between the services provided by military personnel and their families, especially when they are compared with senators, politicians, public servants and civilians. A military person is expected to serve 24/7 with-out overtime pay, be separated from their families for long pe-riods of time and they must be prepared to give the ultimate sacrifice for the security of their country. If they are lucky to survive and retire with an annuity, the government will then claw back their annuity at age 65 or sooner if they be-come disabled.

Of course senators, judge advocates and politicians are exempt from the claw back to their pension. It doesn’t end there! Most spouses will receive a smaller CPP benefit because they served in areas where employment opportuni-ties were very poor. Of course this situation will also result in military families being denied the CPP death benefit for the burial of their spouses.

It doesn’t get any better for veterans! Hospital beds are be-ing closed and veterans hos-pitals responsibility is being passed on to provincial gov-ernments. Disabled veterans are being paid off with a re-duced lump sum payment that denies them benefits such as: a monthly disability tax free pension; a monthly tax free de-

pendent allowance; yearly cost of living adjustments; disability awards; war veterans allow-ance and veterans unit hospi-tals beds.

Warrant Officer Frank Mell-ish was 38 years old and an 18 year Veteran of the C.F. when he was killed Sept 3, 2006, while deployed in Afghani-stan. On Feb 10, 2012 tributes poured in for the fallen soldier. While her late husband was being honoured with a street naming ceremony, his wife spoke of the ongoing pain. No words were more meaningful than those spoken by his wid-ow, Kendra.

“I’d like to say to you here today that time is a healer of all wounds, but that would be a very misleading statement, time has no way of healing wounds of this calibre! My life has forever changed!”

It is unacceptable that this government continues to turn its back on our veterans and their families. These unjust and unfair issues have touched many veterans and their fami-lies! Canada’s sons and daugh-ters are veterans. The public at large needs to stand up to the Government of Canada to cor-rect this undignified treatment levelled at Canada’s Heroes!

It was a long journey for Lennette Randall to finally make it to the Rose-bud School of the Arts, one that tested her faith and her relationships.

Randall was born in Freetown, Si-erra Leone. When she was a teen she completed high school in the U.S. and moved to the United Kingdom to live with her father and attend college and university.

After finishing university Randall had been trying to figure out what was next, and decided she wanted to see what the real world of acting was like. She had had the opportunity to co-lead in Christian Union Theatre at univer-sity, and wanted to know what the real pinch of acting was like.

“I knew I wanted to go to a faith-based because it’s a mad world and having that as a foundation can help stabilize you I think. So I had looked around England and I found a really good school in Birmingham. I went to visit them and I was quite certain I was going to go there until one day I was sitting on the stairs just thinking about it and I just felt like, okay maybe this isn’t it. Literally something was just like, why don’t you go check Christian performing arts schools in Canada on-line,”

That’s exactly what she did and through her search she came across Rosebud School of the Arts. She said when she clicked on the website there was nothing to further inform her be-cause the website was under construc-tion at the time, which was in 2006.

Randall continued browsing, figuring the site wasn’t serious, but just before she closed her browser window she

decided to go back and send them an email to say she wanted to know more about what the school was all about.

A few weeks later she received infor-mation in the mail from Rosebud, and she said when she opened the enve-lope and pulled out the brochure her heart literally went thud. Randall sent the school an email saying she thinks God wanted her to attend the school, and she was told she still had an application process to go through.

“So during this time I was going through my disserta-tion and I was like, it’s go-ing to be a miracle to get through this application pro-cess,” said Randall.

“I found time to go through the application and re-write my personal statement and all of that, and I sent in my application.”

Next up she had a phone interview with the school, and instead of them trying to make sure she would fit in the school, she felt they wanted to make sure the school would fit her. It wasn’t long after that when she got the acceptance letter.

She had graduated from university in July and had to be in Rosebud in September and was trying to figure out how she would get the money to leave. Randall also found out her fam-ily wasn’t so happy with the idea of her going to a place she knew nothing about, and she herself was question-ing her decision to move somewhere where the weather can drop to -30.

“Something wasn’t letting me let it go, and so for two years I kind of fought with it. For the first few months, I fought with trying to come because I knew that it wasn’t going to come

easy, because things like that, that sort of shift your destiny don’t come easy,” said Randall.

She was ready to fight for it, but found many aspects of her life were being affected including her relation-ships, and her faith relationship.

In 2006 she went to the High Com-mission for her visa. Though she didn’t

have the £5,000 or her par-ents offering to support her if something went wrong, the man who helped her held onto her passport and all of her documents and told her to fax him when she had more evidence of financial help, and they would release it as soon as possible.

Eventually she decided not to go to Rosebud because a

lot of things were so unsettled. She spent the next few years work-

ing and trying to figure out what to do with her life. She thought about going to performing arts school in London, but she wasn’t willing to settle for any-thing there. She said over time Rose-bud kept in touch, to see how she was doing and how her decision was com-ing.

In 2008 she was at the point where she wanted something more stable for at least a few years, and that is when the thought of attending Rosebud re-entered her mind. She tried to banish the thoughts, but realized it was up to her to finally make a decision, and says re-finding her faith is what helped strengthen her will.

“Considering there had been so many oppositions before and things hadn’t worked out you do get kind of scared about the kind of decisions you make, and how much more hits and

knocks you can take in life,” said Ran-dall.

After a while she decided to put in another application, but this time she didn’t tell anyone but the school and her three references. Randall was hop-ing the school would be the one to close the door on her, forcing her to give up the desire to attend the school.

When she hadn’t heard anything by August she sent an email to find out if her application had been success-ful. After another hour-long interview Randall was asked, if she was offered a spot in the classes could she make it?

“I was just like, yes, even though I knew I was still in the same boat as two years before. They were like, do you understand that means you have three weeks to get here, and I was like yes,” said Randall.

She had a friend who had originally offered to lend her the money for the first semester when she first applied a few years previous, but after her aunt said she shouldn’t borrow the money she didn’t respond.

This time she emailed the friend to see if the offer was still available, and it was. There were issues with a mis-placed student package, processing her student visa, which at first Randall thought would prevent her from be-ing able to attend, therefore effectively closing the door on the dream.

Her parents sent a letter saying they will support her, but by this point Ran-dall thought it was too late. She sent her application for a visa on September 3, which was when she was supposed to start school in Rosebud. She was told it would take six to eight weeks, but on Sept. 14 there was a letter at her parents from the High Commission saying she was free to travel to Canada.

1. The Council of the Village of Standard to consider a Municipal Development Plan, Bylaw No. 3-2012 to replace the Municipal Development Plan No. 5-98 and all amendments thereto 2. The purpose of the Municipal Development Plan is to establish an overall growth strategy for the com-munity by: - describing the land uses proposed for the Village of Standard; - establishing policies to guide future physical and community development; - establishing policies on environmental issues in the Village of Standard; - establishing policies regarding the provision of municipal services and facilities.

A wonderfully nutty story, $38,000 For A Friendly Face starts at the Sun-shine Chapel in the funeral home of a suburban town where Mrs. Bron-wyn Bain has died and her estranged daughters have arrived for her ‘non funeral’. The daughters, Jane Bain (Heather Pattengale) and Annie Bain (Alysa Van Haastert), arrive for their mother’s funeral, not having seen their mother in years. Meanwhile Matt Watson (Nathan Schmidt), the new funeral director is determined to find the ‘good things’ to make this a fit-ting event. The problem continues to escalate as we discover that Matt has no clue how to create an appropriate celebration of life for a woman that

nobody liked. Neither does he know how to deal with the Last Supper Com-mittee, consisting of a group of chatty women responsible for the meals for funeral events.

The comical events that ensue be-tween the ladies of The Last Supper Committee include a food fight and a few yelling matches balanced between a somber and soulful rendition of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star by Goth teenager Alison (Jesse Anderson) whom the older women end up taking under their wings.

Many little stories about each of the characters within the main story are what keep the audience delighted. Sometimes it was laughing with tears, and other times tears with no laugh-ter, but rather reminiscent of sadder events that everyone can relate to.

The Reading... Give it a Shot program is an annual event at Wheatland elementary School. This year marked 13 years, and over 120 students tracked the amount of minutes they read in 63 days. The program is run by the Calgary educa-tional Partnership Foundation in association with the Calgary Flames and the Calgary Herald. As a way of promoting this program, the Parent Council funds the money to purchase prizes for the kids. in the past the top readers with the most minutes have been rewarded. This time the names of all of the students who kept track of their minutes were entered into the draw for prizes. The Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) board of trustees voted in favour of pursuing a stand-alone consolidated school for K-12 students from the Gleichen, Hussar, Standard and Rockyford ar-eas at their March 27 meeting.

About two dozen community members attended the portion of the meeting that dealt with the pro-posal.

The school board initiated a consultation pro-cess earlier in the year that also included a work-ing group made up of representatives from the East Wheatland region.

“Location was a very big issue,” said Bevan Dav-erne, GHSD superintendent. “East Wheatland area is very large.”

Daverne spoke to the board about the consulta-tion process and how the working group, which also reached out to the communities, reached their recommendation.

“The working group was a good representation of those communities,” he said.

First the group determined that a stand-alone K-12 school was the most favoured, though many thought that Standard may also be a good loca-tion. The group then looked at the best location, not the most favoured location, Daverne said.

Ride times for students taking buses dropped an average of 20 per cent based on the proposed location for the school, which is somewhere along Highway 561 between the junctions with Highway 840 (south of Standard) and 842 (south of Chan-cellor), a six mile wide area.

Daverne also addressed some of the questions that have been raised as part of the process and a public meeting on March 19. A past estimate of costs for water and sewer for a stand-alone school were $2.6 million, while the current esti-mate for similar work is approximately $500,000. The school division previously received quotes from contractors and this time they got quotes di-rectly from construction companies and also other schools for operating costs.

“All of these are ball park estimates,” Daverne said, adding that a site will need to be selected before a proper estimate can be made.

Trustee Janet Bolinger asked when the school division will learn about capital funding from the province. Daverne explained that with a provin-cial election coming up, there is no indication of when Alberta Education will review and approve funding.

After approval of funding, the process of getting a new school in place can take two to three years, said Don Hartman, GHSD facilities manager.

Another concern was the cost and feasibility of

building a school that meets a silver LEEDS (Lead-ership in Energy and Environmental Design) cer-tification, required by the province for new build-ings. A flat site with no drainage issues would be similar to having the site located in a community in terms of how it would affect that certification, he said. New portable classrooms, for example, meet the silver LEEDS certification, he added.

The board then debated how to proceed with a motion on making the East Wheatland consoli-dated K-12 school a capital project priority.

Trustee Robert McKay entered a motion to pro-ceed, but did not want to use the specific area defined by the working group, stating that the school could end up where it is not fully utilized by locals.

Trustee Karen Harries argued that the board should proceed with the recommendation of the working group, made up of parents and commu-nity members.

The board carried a motion to amend McKay’s motion to include that area and he was the only trustee who voted against, due to the amendment.

The board later carried a motion to make the East Wheatland School project their top priority for capital projects. A new school in Strathmore was set as the second priority because the board wants to ensure the East Wheatland school project moves forward as soon as possible.

Should the province approve funding for the project in the future, a specific location will be chosen.

Hussar Parent Council chairperson Corey Ann Sandum and Central Bow Valley President Cara Sheppard expressed displeasure, along with other school council representatives, that McKay voted against the recommendation of the workgroup, despite a clear consensus on the proposed area.

“I am very disappointed in the vote of our rep-resentative,” she said.

The school division website (www.ghsd75.ca) features a link on the front page called East Wheatland Information that has documents relat-ing to the process and also an FAQ.

The proposed school is slated to serve 350-400 students.

Strathmore area students and choirs faired very well at the Final Concert and Award Presentations of the Drumheller and District Music Festival on March 23.

Brooklyn Davidson, a 17-year-old Strathmore High School student and the Strathmore Children’s Choir ENCORE, both performed for a full house at the Greentree School.

The Brentwood School Junior and Senior Choir were awarded four choir awards given out during the evening. The Junior Choir was awarded the T. E. Keele Trophy, Grade 2 and 3 while the Senior Choir was awarded the G. Fred Anderson Memorial Plaque, Grade 4-6 and the W. R. Dean Memorial Plaque and McDonald’s Restaurant Drumheller Scholarship for the highest mark awarded to all competing school chorus-es. The Senior Choir also won the Grand Award: UFA Award of Excellence and Scholarship chosen by the adjudicator for excellence in choirs.

“I am particularly excited with this year’s Drumheller Fes-tival results. Having both the Junior and Senior Choir rec-ommended to Provincials hasn’t happened for a few years,” Mrs. Steeves said. “We have an awesome team in our choir programme and in our entire school. There is huge support for our music programme. This is a great day for Brentwood School.”

In addition three local pianists, studying with Carolyn Steeves, scooped up a number of awards. Brooklyn Davidson was awarded the Ross Ferby Scholarship for Piano Recital/Concert class Plan I & II, the Grand Award: Nicholas and Pearl Ferby Memorial Award of Excellence Scholarship for ex-cellence in Piano. Grace Praeker and Susanne Sevick, Grade

4 classmates at Sacred Heart Academy, took four awards be-tween them.

Grace was awarded the Drumheller Music Teacher’s Tro-phy for highest mark in Canadian Composers classes, Plan I & II and the Sina Vickers Memorial Award for highest mark in Piano solos Plan II, Level 2-3 while Susanne was awarded the Alison Jensen Memorial Trophy for highest mark in Piano classes for 9 year olds and the Vera Marchuk Memorial Schol-arship for highest mark in Piano solos 6 -12 year old.

Rayanne Laycock, a student of Loralee Laycock, had a great evening with a number of awards. She received the Amy Thompson Trophy for highest mark 10 years and under in Musical Theatre solos, the Louisa J. Howard Trophy for high-est mark in Junior Folk Song solo classes 14 years and under, the Grand Award: EOG Resources Plaque and Traves Family Scholarship awarded to the competitor 12 and under receiv-ing the highest mark.

“It was definitely a great representation by all of our Strath-more musicians,” said Laycock. “I am thrilled with the out-come for my individual students, as well as the provincial nomination for the Strathmore Children’s Choir.

They all worked very hard to make it this far, and it is nice to have them recognized for their efforts.”

Also performing at the concert on Friday night were Kort-nee, Brooke, Brittyn and Khloe Paiha, sisters from Strathmore and students of Loralee Laycock, with their Musical theatre production number of “I Won’t Say” from Hercules.

Brooke and Kortnee also won the John & Jean Edwards Me-morial Scholarship for highest mark in Musical Theatre Du-ets, Trios, Ensembles and Production Numbers. Avery John-son, also from Strathmore and a student of Laycock’s, won the Nacmine Community Association Scholarship.

Strathmore musicians rise to the top

Robb Dahl was the winner of the autographed Calgary Flames jersey that the Strathmore As-sembly for Youth (SAY) raffled off. The raffle raised $1925 for SAY. The money will be used to provide a skill-building workshop for SAY mem-bers and help implement a project we are plan-ning that is aimed at reducing graffiti/vandalism in town. The group would like to thank mayor Grajczyk for donating the jersey and for everyone who bought tickets.

Getting a chance to compete in the World Junior Curling Champi-onship’s is a dream for many avid curlers. Cluny native Kristine An-derson and her team had a chance to make that dream come true when they curled as the team Can-ada junior women’s team.

Skip Jocelyn Peterman, with third Brittany Tran, second Re-becca Konschuh and lead Kris-tine Anderson gave it their all at the championship which was held in Oestersund, Sweden. The final four teams had to play off for third and fourth place after the Czech Republic secured their spot in sec-ond place. The girls team finished their stint at the Worlds on March 9 with a tie-breaker loss to Russia.

“It was amazing, it was definitely like an amazing experience and you got to play different teams and we definitely learned a lot from the experience, which I think will take us through the next couple of years to work with and become

stronger,” said Anderson. “I think wearing the maple leaf

on your back, it gives you this spe-cial feeling, you’re representing your country. It’s like your rep-resenting the country and you’re going to make anybody proud no matter what.”

The team joined forces a few years ago.

“It started a couple of years ago. We were training for Alberta games and if you place in the top four at the Alberta games you trained for the Canada winter games. These girls are the same age as me so we talked about it and decided to form a team,” said Anderson.

“This year we were determined to do something, and we actually went to Worlds. We kind of still have to talk about next years plans but I know we definitely would like to go back to Worlds.”

It was an Alberta team that also earned a spot in Sweden as the team Canada Junior men’s team. The boys brought home a gold medal after defeating Sweden 10-4 on March 11.

After facing two elimination games in the semifinal, the Wheatland Chiefs fought back and earned a berth in the SCAHL Championship Final.

The local double–A midget team defeat-ed Sylvan Lake 4-0 in Game 2 on March 21 at the Strathmore Family Centre, before earning a 4-3 double overtime win on the road in Game 3 the following day, claim-ing the North Division Championship.

Just a mere three days later, the Chiefs hammered the Lethbridge Hounds 5-1 in Game 1 of the SCAHL Championship Se-ries on March 25 at the Family Centre.

“I think we used the momentum com-ing out of the last game, which was pretty close,” said Chiefs head coach Devin Ol-son. “We have to come out a little harder in the first 10 minutes – today we were still sleeping and we were lucky our goal-tending has been really good. They helped us stay in the game and helped us catch that second wind, that extra gear, before we get going.”

After losing Game 1 of the semifinal se-ries, the Chiefs have gone 3-0, outscoring their opponents 13-4 in the process.

According to Olson, the adversity of facing a pair of elimination games in the semifinals was a prefect lesson for the boys.

“Losing that first game in Sylvan woke them up,” said the coach. “We had two goals called off (in Game 3), but we bat-tled through it.

“It was a good lesson.”However, once Game 3 was over, their

sights were set on the Lethbridge Hounds. Despite being a .500 team during the regu-lar season, the Hounds have caught fire and have made life miserable for their op-ponents.

Even after the Chiefs blew out Game 1, Olson warned his team not to take the Hounds lightly.

“They’re a dangerous team,” said Olson. “They are not a big team, but they have a lot of skilled players. All playoffs they have been capitalizing on the (power play), so that is a key thing. We need to limit their chances and stay disciplined.”

After Game 2, which was played on March 28 (result not available as of press time), the series was to shift to Lethbridge, on March 30 and, if necessary, Game 4 on April 1.

According to Olson, the Chiefs must keep it simple in the best-of-five champi-onship series.

“The big thing is, especially with the amount of hockey we’ve been playing, is keeping the shifts short, that is going to be the key,” said Olson. “We’ve been play-ing a lot of hockey and with overtime and stuff. Winning the first game was really im-portant, but we need to keep it going in Game 2.

“Their goal is the split and we need to prevent that.”

Ray passed away on March 19, 2012 after a long illness. He is survived by his loving and caring wife Margaret Harris and his nine children

Trudy (Norbert) Kondla, Linda (Al) Curwin, Ray (Sue) Harris, Fred (Karin) Harris, Bonnie Harris, Debbie (Gary) Esligar, Wendy Harris, Candy (Keith) Turly, Sandy (Denise) Harris, ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Ray was born in Calgary, Alberta on March 12, 1925. He grew up in Calgary and met his future wife there. Ray and his three brothers joined the military during World War II to fight for their country. Ray joined the navy and was stationed on HMCS Magog and survived his ship being torpedoed in the St. Lawrence River. He returned home to marry Margaret. Ray and his family later moved to the Standard area and bought a farm. He welded all over Alberta before becoming an oilfield operator in the Standard area, all while continuing to farm and raise his nine children. Ray Harris was a quiet and hard working person who was always willing to help a neighbor and especially his family. He always looked forward to seeing the baby animals each spring, but he liked nothing more than sitting on his deck and watching his grandchildren play. U19B Provincials Ringette 2012 tournament held in Rockyford

The Strathmore Storm bantam female team won the League Championship march 25 at the Strath-more Family Centre. After splitting the first two games of the best-of-three series versus Airdrie, the Storm pulled through in Game 3 to claim the championship.

Basketball season for competitive school players is over, and coaches from Strathmore High School took a few minutes to reflect on the past season.

The JV girls were a little overmatched in the senior league.“We improved, but it was hard to see because we were play-

ing seniors,” said coach Dion Galandy. “We focused on JV at the end of the year. We went to a tour-

nament in Eckville and we lost in the final, so we got second place.”

At the final home tournament the girls walked away with gold, seeing a successful end to a tough season.

“It was a positive finish to the tournament, to the year re-ally,” said Galandy.

With only one girl in Grade 12 this year, many of the girls are likely to be returning next year.

“We will still have to work on a lot of fundamentals, a lot of confidence. We have to build some confidence by hopefully winning some of the games we play against some of the se-nior teams instead of just getting waxed,” said Galandy.

Most of the players on the senior boys team won’t be return-ing next year, but coach Christopher Hall isn’t too concerned.

“Most of our players were veterans and we will only be returning two kids. But Kyle Larson did an excellent job with the JV kids and our Junior high finished second in zones so

I’m hoping our program will have a quick turnaround,” said Hall.

“Our season went pretty well. We had our highs and our lows but overall we gave our best effort game in and game out and I think we all had a lot of fun over the course of the season.”

Hall said some of the highlights for the boys include, a double over time home game against Strathcona Tweedsmuir, where a lot of the boys stepped up and played big, and a sur-prising home tournament win against West Central.

“Individually we had our share of wow moments from a three quarter court swish, to unreal passes, to clutch shots. Tons of plays from the season stick out in my mind that made it a pleasure to watch whether as a coach or spectator.”

Kyle Larson coached the JV Spartans this season. Larson said the team played in the Foothills league where they were overmatched in the age group.

“We went to three tournaments and competed well at those tournaments and finished the year of really well at a tourna-ment in Rosemary,” said Larson.

“The last two tournaments we played at in Duchess and Rosemary were definitely highlights in the season for the boys, they played very well in those tournaments and they had good games throughout.”

Larson said the team showed a lot of improvement going into that weekend, saying they had played better in the last game then they had the whole season.

The Rockyford Ringette Association, along with their host committee, held a successful weekend for the U19 Ringette Provincial tournament.

Participating teams attended from Rockyford, Calgary, Airdrie, Red Deer, Beaumont, Edmonton, Sherwood Park, and Fort McMurray.

Assistant Coach for the Ringers Beth Vergouwen said, “We were really happy with the positive comments received from the visiting teams. It gives you a great feeling of accomplish-ment for all of the work that goes into hosting an event like this. I believe that the weekend events left everyone with a great impression of Rockyford and appreciation for what a small community can offer.”

A tournament banquet was held Friday evening at the Rockyford Community hall and was catered by the Rocky-ford Lions club. It was an enjoyable, entertaining evening that showcased and honoured many talents of the team, par-ents and community. The community was pleased to have the 2012 Centennial Stampede Royalty as special guests for the evening. Stampede Princess Dani Gariepy spoke of her history of playing Ringette in Rockyford , her career and choices afterwards that led her to become a Calgary Stam-pede princess.

Another highlight of the evening was having one of Rocky-ford’s team player and talented vocalist Chelsey Murphy sing on stage with piano accompaniment by Shauna Murphy.

At the end of the evening all of the team’s head coach-es were asked to come forth to present the Players Choice

award to an individual player chosen by their teammates. Brent Melcher, coach of the Rockyford Ringers U19B team, presented Jenna Vergouwen with this award.

The Provincial tournament provided some very competi-tive and exciting games amongst the participating teams. The Rockyford team played Calgary SV for their first game in a close match that ended in a loss for Rockyford 5-6. Game 2 saw Rockyford playing their best game of the tournament with a satisfying win over Edmonton 10-7. Unfortunately in Game 3 Rockyford came out short with 7-9 loss in a tight game vs Beaumont . This then put Rockyford out of ad-vancement to the semi-finals.

The U19B Provincial Gold medal was claimed by Fort Mc-Murray, with an 8-5 win over Airdrie, and the Bronze medal was won by Edmonton in a 10-1 win over Calgary SV.
