The Scriptures proclaimed in today’s celebration invite us to look beyond appearances.

The clear and concise images of the Book of Ecclesiastes recall to our minds the style of ancient proverbs, and warn that we should always listen to the words and reasoning other people use before we establish important relationships. In the Gospel, Jesus places this warning in the context of the relationship between a teacher and student, and between brother and sister—the most precious of all relationships, because it is rooted in faith and in the community of disciples. A hypocrite is a brother or sister who sees defects of others but not his or her own. For Jesus, one must first attend to and heal that which is opposed to mercy and reconciliation within his or her own heart before accusing others. Jesus frequently reprimanded the Pharisees for this attitude, and his criticism applies to us also as we easily give in to the hypocritical point of view described in the Gospel. In the commentaries and prayers of the faithful today, emphasize Christ’s victory that helps us to see beyond appearances to create loving relationships that nurture our faith in Christ, who brings us together and sustains us with his grace.

From the Desk of Father Kurt In the Gospel for this Sunday, Jesus tells us that you can judge a tree

by the fruit it bears. If our culture was a tree I think it would be safe to

say that it is bearing a lot of bad fruit. Our culture is plagued with

violence, immortality, addictions of all kinds, and declining educational,

political and family institutions. The breakdown of the family in our

society is causing more and more social problems and will not be fixed

without turning to God and making a choice to live by His

commandments. Jesus tells us that we should change ourselves first

before we look at the faults of others. If our politicians would do this I

think maybe we would be able to make some of the important changes

in our country that are needed to help solve our greatest social

problems. If we as citizens are not taking responsibility for our own

behavior, and bearing the fruit of virtue and God fearing living, it does

not matter how much the government is given to solve social

problems, because they will never be solved unless individuals decide

to solve them. As Christians let us stop blaming others for the

problems that exist in our culture and try to solve them by making the

necessary changes in our own lives.

Safe Haven Sunday: Equipping the Family,

Safeguarding Children St. Theodore’s is setting aside this weekend, March 2nd & 3rd, as Safe Haven Sunday in order to give focused time and resources to

address the harmfulness of pornography and other online threats to marriages, family life and culture. Today’s awareness day is celebrated through prayer and a reflection within the context of the Mass. After Mass, each individual and family will be given Covenant Eyes’ book, Equipped: Smart Catholic Parenting in a Sexualized Culture. This book includes a unique seven-day text-to-opt-in program: The Equipped 7-Day Challenge. This Challenge provides practical tips any caring adult can take to create safer digital environments for themselves and our young people.
