Lenten ChallengeToday, Christians strive to "give up" something duringLent in the categories of almsgiving, prayer, andfasting. To reflect on Lent this year, we’re going to giveyou some challenge ideas to help you grow closer toChrist this Lent, in preparation for Easter. Perhapsyou’ll choose to take one of these challenges andcommit to it every day until Easter!

Challenge #31: If you like social media apps, consideradding a devotional app with daily inspiration, prayers,or reflection topics.

Page 4: March 29, 2020 Fifth Sunday of Lent · 2020-03-29 · Bags with handles (paper, reusable, or plastic), boxed ... and commuted the sentences of the three men currently on the state's

Challenge #32: Focus on the words that come out of your mouth and your body language. Try only posting things on social media that are inspiring or encouraging.Challenge #33: Host a movie night remotely with a friend and agree to set time aside after the movie to talk about it.Challenge #34: Commit the last few minutes before you drift off to sleep counting your blessings and being thankful. Give up obsessing about your to-do list or worrying about things you can’t control. Challenge #35: Copy out a verse-a-day that addresses faith instead of fear (like Deuteronomy 31:8). When fear or fretting strikes, hold yourself accountable to take out the verse and pray to help you give up fear and embrace faith.Challenge #36: It might be time to give up isolation!Try joining our Light a Prayer Candle group and be united with others in prayer, or join us on Fridays at 6:15 p.m. for Online Stations of the Cross. Challenge #37: If anger or frustration brings out the worst in your vocabulary, give it up for Lent. Try to replace frustrating explosions of anger with a deep breath and remind yourself of the loving way God handles our messes.Challenge #38: Is there a situation, person, or even negative self-talk that crosses your mind too often?Using a prayer like the Lord’s prayer is an easy way to turn from sadness or a discouraging situation and put yourself back in the present moment and moving ahead.Challenge #39: If you have found yourself trashing a lot of food because you have overbought or under-planned (or both), use this time to plan well-balanced meals. Be intentional to consume fruits and veggies right away, make smaller batches so there are fewer leftovers (or make things that can be frozen later). Challenge #40 :

challenges beyond the Lenten season. Consider extending one of the

Why was the Crossnecessary to forgive our sins?

Our Home Is With the Father“We all started our journey in the same place- in theback seat of a police car

back seat of a police car. Be honest, none of us wasthinking at that moment, “God has a plan for me.” Wewere allscared.”

“The first seven years in prison you are just trying to fitin. We need to remind ourselves; PRISON IS NOTOUR HOME! When we get released, the world is notour home. Our home is with the Father.”

These remarks reveal one of the most punitivequalities of imprisonment- the loss of a sense ofbelonging. The homes, families, and communities theybelong to are gone. The Men in White resist the notionthat they belong in prison. Hope itself is linked to thebelief that they will soon be outside the walls. In asense, they sustain themselves by balancing, “fittingin,” with “not belonging.”Brene Brown, a research professor at the University ofHouston, addressed a group of eighth-graders. Theybroke into small groups to describe the differencebetween “fitting in” and “belonging.” They wrote:Belonging is being somewhere you want to be, andthey want you. Fitting in is being somewhere you wantto be, but they don’t care one way or the other.Belonging is being accepted for you. Fitting in is beingaccepted for being like everyone else.If I get to be me, I belong. If I have to be like you, I fitin.Maybe middle school, prison, and life itself arejourneys where we try to fit in, but really crave a senseof belonging.

The Order of Malta runs a Pen Pal Program for thosein prison and we are looking for volunteers to writeinmates. This only takes a few minutes of your timeeach month and a stamp. The program is anonymousand presents us with a way to be true to our call tovisit Christ in prison. Please reach out to

I can't tell you how delighted I am to share this bit of good news: ColoradoGovernor Jared Polis just signed the death penalty repeal bill SB 20-100 into law

and commuted the sentences of the three men currently on the state's death row to life without the possibility of parole.

It's official: capital punishment is outlawed in Colorado.Read CMN's Press Release

I'll keep this brief: Colorado would not have been to able accomplish this repeal without the faith-filled education, advocacy, and prayer of people like you. With all the fear and uncertainty we find in these days of the global pandemic, I am deeply grateful that you are part of CMN's family of advocates committed to building a culture of life.Together we can continue taking strides toward ending the death penaltyand showing the world what Christ's love looks like.
