• In 1988, a school board had several candidates for university president• There was one Deaf candidate – he had better education, better experience, and knew sign language• They chose, however, a hearing woman- she had less education, less experience, and knew no sign

language• Their reason: Deaf people cannot function in a hearing society• Began Deaf civil rights awareness across this country:• The students protested and stormed the campus- & with support of the entire world, they finally won

their battle• The first Deaf president of Gallaudet was elected- I.King Jordan• Note: Finished? Copy signs from the video, or sign to a friend.
