Blessings of the Cross: A Lenten Bible Study

Based on the Revised Common Lectionary Robert Martin Walker, Author

The Blessings of Thirst

Exodus 17:1-7 Romans 5:1-11

John 4:5-42

The third lesson in the Lenten series asks us to focus on our thirsts. A thirsty person has but one agenda, finding a way to quench it. In the words of our author, ―Thirst, and other pressing needs, can be an opportunity to express trust in God.‖ In the Exodus text, the children of Israel when facing a serious drought, allowed their circumstances to undermine their faith in God and God‘s representative. They complained and quarrelled. They confused physical discomfort with the absence of God‘s protection. They forgot all that God had done in bringing them out of Egypt, crossing the Red Sea on dry land and feeding them manna from heaven. We do not want to treat God like a vending machine, placing our requests in and looking to ‗blessings‘ to fall down immediately. God may not come when we want, but God is always on time!

In the Epistle to the church at Rome, the Apostle Paul speaks of another human thirst—the one relationship and reconciliation. Paul believes that the faith that restored the relationship between Abraham and God is available to all of us, in Jesus Christ. We are ‗justified‘ or reconciled to God because of the great sacrifice made by Jesus Christ on the cross. ―Our thirst for God is a blessing because it leads us to seek reconciliation and to discover that it has already been offered to us as a gift.‖

The gospel lesson ties together the thirst quenching water of Meribah and Massah to the thirst quenching water of Jesus Christ. The story of the woman at the well can only be found in the gospel of John and provides a delightful look at God making the extra effort necessary to reach those on the fringes of the community; first as a Samaritan, then as a female and then as a sinner. Her questions seem to indicate a deep spiritual thirst, one only belief in Jesus Christ as Saviour could quench. Along with this female/outsider/sinner we are invited to receive the living water of Christ and live abundantly, never to thirst again. If you are not in a Lenten Study Group, you may still study along with us by contacting the Rev. Cheryle Hanna at 416-922-1167 x235.

Readings for next Sunday and for the fourth week of the Lenten Study These readings will be used in our worship next Sunday and in the weekly Lenten Bible Studies.

FROM THE BOARD OF MISSION...

JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI As we continue to pray for those who have been affected by the devastation in Japan and for those working to bring relief, we also have the privilege of assisting financially through Canadian Baptist Ministries, The Sharing Way. Anyone wishing to make a donation may do so by writing out a cheque to Yorkminster Park Baptist Church and then designating at the

bottom, "The Sharing Way, Japan Earthquake Relief."

AN UPDATE FROM RUPEN DAS... 1) As Rupen and his team are completing the study on poverty in Lebanon, please continue to pray as there is much writing and editing to do over the next month. The study will provide the basis for discussions on how the churches can complement their witness by responding to social needs. Two Baptist churches in Lebanon are already moving ahead in this area. 2) Rupen is currently applying for the renewal of his residence permit. Please pray that the process would be routine and the permit reissued without any problem. Rupen writes that "in these uncertain times, we continue to experience a stability and joy that can only be explained as coming from the God who is the giver of life. Your prayers are key in sustaining us. Please find Rupen and Mamta's newsletter for a full update, on the bulletin board in the Centre Hall. LEBANESE SOCIETY FOR EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (LSESD)
