It takes me a very long while sometimes to make big decisions in my life, be they professional or personal. The recent economic downturn hasresulted in many people losing theirjobs. It has been estimated that 75

percent of the jobs that have been lostwere held by men.

An editorial in a recent psychiatric jour-nal discussed the effect on a man when heloses his job and is no longer the familybreadwinner. According to the editorial,this job loss has resulted in an increase inthe number of men being diagnosed withdepression.

Depression was once considered a disor-der affecting mainly women, but this ischanging. It is predicted that the numberof men diagnosed with depression willcontinue to increase.

Women were becoming more involvedin the job market even before the presentdownturn. In 1970, 4 percent of wiveswere the primary income producers in thefamily. In 2007, it increased to 22 percent,and the percentage continues to rise.

Today, 50 percent of jobs are held bywomen. As they assume more powerfuland important jobs, they are developingsimilar medical maladies that have tradi-tionally afflicted their male counterparts.

One study has shown that women whohave stressful jobs were twice as likely tohave a heart attack than women whosejobs were not stressful.

Women in the workplace have an in-creased incidence of high blood pressure,increased cholesterol and being over-weight than those who do not work out-side the home.

A song in "My Fair Lady" asks the musi-cal question, "Why Can't a Woman BeMore Like a Man?" When it comes to their

working situations, in certain ways, theyare becoming more like a man, especiallyas it relates to the stress associated withtheir jobs.

It has taken too long for these job op-portunities to become available to women.But now that they are more available,women should be aware that these oppor-tunities come with a potential price: con-cerns about their health.

This issue needs to be addressed — thehealth of both men and women dependupon it.
