The Party

From the Principals Desk:

March 23, 2017 Flatirons’ Families: We have had a busy March! Here is a quick look at some of the activities. Kindergarten is finishing research for their Animal Safari this Friday. The 1st/2nd Learning Community has been working on poetry books. Third graders just finished Colorado animal research projects, and Fourth graders had a great field trip to the History of Colorado Center in Denver. The Fifth grades went to the Eco-Cycle facility. We also had the Boulder Ballet here for a school-wide assembly and had another amazing Flatirons’ Talent Show last week. The teachers had a day with Kiffany Lychock, the Director of Innovation for the district, as part of our yearlong training on Project Based Learning. It has been quite a month, and now students and staff are getting excited about spring break.

The Party: The Party is our spring fundraising event and is one of the highlights of the year. It is a great opportunity to get together and celebrate all the wonderful things happening at Flatirons, and raise a little money too. The funds raised through the Party directly impact our students’ daily experience at school. It is well attended by the Flatirons’ staff and is a lot of fun. One of my favorite parts of the evening is finding out who will be “Principal for the Morning!” This year we will again be at the Spyder Active Sports Showroom at 4725 Walnut St. Please check out all the details on our Party page of the website and plan to attend.

PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) Testing: State assessments for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in the areas of Math, Reading/Language Arts, Social Studies (for 4th grade) and Science (for 5th grade) have begun. The 5th graders started Math on Monday, and 4th graders and 3rd graders start Monday, April 3rd, right after spring break. All elementary students take these assessments across the State and they give us one type of data we use to evaluate how we are doing teaching in these content areas. If you have a student taking these tests please help them get a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast each morning. Scott

Class Placement Procedures

The time of year has arrived when we consider placing students in classes for the next school year. As we begin assigning students to next year’s teachers, we gather information from various sources that help us get a more complete picture of the learning needs of each student. This year’s classroom teachers will supply a major part of this information. We also gather information from other specialists in the school such as general music, physical education and art. If appropriate, the special education teachers and/or literacy teacher will also provide input.

We would also like to incorporate input from parents, if they choose to complete our Class Placement Form. This optional input helps us see the child through the eyes of the parent. This view may be somewhat different than the classroom teacher. If you are interested in providing your input to this process, please stop by the office to obtain the form.

The form must be completed and returned to your child's classroom teacher no

later than Thursday, April 13, 2017. No forms will be accepted after this

date. Also, as we have done in past years, we will not acknowledge specific

teacher requests.

The iLab is looking for Legos!

New or Used Donations Welcome!

Legos of all kinds are a great way to teach, master, and practice mathematical and

engineering concepts while developing creativity and problem-solving skills-- not to

mention, having fun! The iLab is looking to incorporate Legos into our space and

curriculum, but while they’re worth every penny, Legos definitely do not come

cheap!

If you have any Lego materials that are no longer being used (bricks, tables,

Mindstorms, Technics, etc.), or if you would like to donate new Legos, please drop

them off at the office. Monetary donations are also welcome! Thank you!
