Sport Relief It never ceases to amaze us just how generous our students (and you!) can be. All week the Key Stage 3 Hub have been selling basketball tickets, headbands and wristbands. Today we all paid the privilege to wear sporty attire (some paid a little more if they didn’t look that sporty!) and our staff basketball team took on the Post 16 team. Mr Milburn, as per his pledge if enough money was raised, donned a tutu and had his (very hairy) legs waxed…ouch! The match finished 48-16 to our Post 16 students. We raised a magnificent total of £2319.64 (trumping last year’s £1518 raised for Comic Relief last year) …thank you so much.

Attendance Measure – Highest Attending Tutor Group

NUT Strike Action – Wednesday 26th March As you are aware, following the official notification from the NUT informing the school that 35 of our 100 teachers will be on national strike on the 26th, school will be open for all Year 11 and Post 16 (Years 12 and 13) students only.

Year 11 will be registered via B Hall Assembly at 8.30am and must report there. The programme for their day will be given to them in the assembly. School buses will run as normal and there will be catering as usual in the Post-16 canteen area for Years 12 and 13; a limited facility will be available for Year 11 in the Courtyard Café. School will close as usual at 3pm.

I regret we cannot have other years in school, but I am pleased we can open for those in examination years. As far as I am aware, the majority of local and Bradford schools are also closed to all but Years 11-13.

The Year 10 Parents’ Meeting has been moved to Wednesday April 2nd.

Learning Community Day The theme of the day was ‘Journey’ and all students took part in different ways.

Key Stage Three showcased their work produced in Citizenship lessons at the Craiglands Hotel.

Year 10 used the afternoon to focus on career pathways and prepare for mock interviews. There were workshops (on CV and letter writing, as well as the techniques needed to be successful in an interview), and had the chance to further explore possible careers by attending the Careers Fair.

With just over 2 months to the first public exam Year 11s focused on revision! There were sessions run by the Maths and Science departments as well as a revision launch offering you practical advice and tips on how best to prepare for exams.

Careers Fair As part of our Learning Community Day we held our first, in a long time, Careers Fair. It was a great opportunity for our students to get a taste of some of the career opportunities that are open to them. We welcomed local firms and multinationals alike, with stalls ranging from educational choices to accountancy, PR, retail, law and finance. The Fair also hosted our Armed Forces and Air Force. It was a really impressive event – the number of stalls, the enthusiasm of the delegates, the enthusiasm of our students, the vibrancy and business-like atmosphere, the range of opportunities on offer. Parents were also very complimentary and valued the chance to sample and discuss careers and see their children focussed and exploring options. The delegates too, were positive and felt it was all very worthwhile.

Options Timings The deadline for Year 9 returning their options forms is today, Friday 21st March. All of Year 9 have had assemblies, new subject talks, meetings with Mrs Purnell and Parents’ Evenings to help with the process of choosing options. The Drama department recently held an event to showcase their skills and acting ability to potential future Drama students. Year 10 Drama GCSE students performed a showcase of work for Year 9s. The performances were based on work and projects carried out in lesson time, including Brechtian Riot pieces, Stanislavski monologues and abstract work. With no backdrop or stage setting the pieces had to work based on the actors’ talents and they didn’t disappoint. The pieces covered a gamut of emotions, all executed with a maturity beyond their years. It was a great opportunity for Year 10 students to perform in front of a real audience; it helped to build their confidence and experience in preparation for exams. The showcase also enabled Year 9 students to get a feel of what drama GCSE is like. The showcase was a great success and all involved should be very proud of their work. It is a great example of how peers can inspire and support each other in important learning choices.

Hola y bienvenidos Welcome to our Spanish exchange students who arrive today, Friday. They are here for a week and will be in school Monday morning. During their week they will visit Skipton, York, Manchester and Haworth and Saltaire as well as a quiz in B Hall on Monday evening and a farewell meal in the Aagrah in Ilkley on Thursday night. This is the 8th Ilkely Pozuelo Exchange and we have the biggest numbers participating ever!

Our Spanish guests will spend the weekend with their host families with students in Year 11 who are currently doing GCSE Spanish. Thank you if you are one of the families hosting our guests next week…gracias le agradecemos su apoyo!

Sharing Success Well done to our mathematicians who on Saturday 15th March took part in the Pop Maths Quiz which formed part of the Leeds University STEM Festival of Science 2014 (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). We had our most successful year ever with two podium finishes! Out of the 24 teams that took part, our Year 7 team were bronze medallists and our Year 8 team, with one more point than the Year 7s, were silver medallists. Having attended the event for six years now, the questions were notably harder this year so to have two such successful teams is fantastic. Well done to all those who took part – the Maths Department can't wait for next year when we will be challenging for medals again!

Our Year 7 team:

Daniel Leach (7HED/KE), Louise

Cody (7HED/KE), Emmott Finch

(7DSF), Amber Woffindin (7DSF),

Matthew Elston (7MPC) and

India Sahota (7LAM)

Our Year 8 team:

Jacob Cooke (8MWC), Harvey

Sykes (8MWC), Matthew Hall

(8CW/SF), Oscar Stapleton

(8CW/SF), Euan Savage (8HM)

and Isaac Herrington (8JRW)

Congratulations to Emily Field (7LAM) who has been selected to represent Bradford Espirit Diving Club at the G Star Diving Championships on the weekend of 28-30th March. Good luck Emily! Good luck to our Year 11 rugby team who are through to the final of the Yorkshire Cup against Crossley Heath School this Sunday 22nd March at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield. It is a fantastic achievement to get through to the final – we are behind them all the way!

The year 11 team (mixed 11s and 10s) are the fourth team in consecutive years to reach this stage which is a huge achievement, after beating some very good and reputable rugby playing schools.

The finals day starts around 12pm with various age range games, right up to our game at 3:00pm. We are really grateful to all staff and parents who have shown their support this season. We have achieved great success across all years: Year 7 - District festival winners and quarter finalists in the Yorkshire Cup, Year 8 - District Festival winners, Year 10 - semi-finalist in the Yorkshire Cup, 1st XV - District 10s Festival winners, Semi Finalist in the Yorkshire Cup and 2 games away from a National quarter final in the NatWest Vase (highest attainment in IGS history). What a season!

Thank you to Charlotte Gibbs (7MPC), Charlotte Brooks (7MPC), Callum Gibbons (8MWC) and Seth Shuttleworth (8GPS) who supported Harry Gration and Amy Garcia from Look North as they rode their Tandem through Ilkley (following the planned Tour de France route). The four students bravely stood in the wind and cold to catch a quick glimpse of the celebrities – they appreciated our support and Harry even shouted a thank you!

Well done to our U13 boys’ cricket team who are County Champions. The boys represented Bradford in the U13 Indoor Cricket finals at Headingley last week.

They began their campaign confidently with emphatic wins against Hull (85-35) and Sheffield (71-31). These successes produced a top-of-the-league clash with Richmond School. Ilkley’s confident batsmen registered 78 for 6 and pressurised their North Yorkshire rivals from the outset, taking three wickets in consecutive balls in the opening over of the innings. Richmond recovered to 61 for 7, but the damage had already been done and IGS topped the group earning the right to play League B runners-up, York, in the semi-final.

Fulford School were no match for IGS who raced to 86 for 7 before dismissing the York winners for 40. In the other semi-final Richmond edged out Holmfirth in a thrilling last-ball finish to produce a North Yorkshire v West Yorkshire final. Batting first, Richmond found scoring difficult as Ilkley’s bowlers and fielders discovered their very best form, taking wicket after wicket to reduce their opposing finalists to 34 all out. The batsmen approached their relatively simple task with caution and precision and eased past Richmond’s score in just 4.3 overs to be deservedly crowned Yorkshire Indoor Champions 2014. More Marvellous Mathematicians! Well done to Daniel Hayes (11KPC), Tom Stephens (11SMS), James Flanagan (10PPB), Rebecca Hall (10ACD), Tom Matthews (11JB), Barney Addenbrook (9SMD) who are amongst the British qualifiers for entry to the prestigious European Maths Kangeroo Competition. As a result of their efforts they get to take a one hour Maths paper at 9am on Thursday! This is the most qualifiers the school has had for the event in several years. Also, for the first time in some years we have a qualifier for the International Maths Olympiad on the same day. Congratulations to Nathan Spiller (1VEB0) who gets to take a 2 hour paper on Thursday. In the words of Mr Sharpe (Maths teacher), ‘Being good at Maths is obviously very cool!’ Well done to our Year 7 readers who raised money for Readathon. They raised a total of £836.40. Students were sponsored per book and attempted to read as many books as possible.

Football Focus Congratulations to our Year 10 team who played Ralph Thoresby on Monday. It was a close match and the final score was in our favour 1-0. Our Year 9 team were unsuccessful against St Mary’s 3-1 and our U19 team just missed out on a draw against Abbey Grange 3-2. Rugby Round-up Our Year 7 boys’ rugby team took part in the Rugby Festival at Bradford Grammar School on Tuesday. The Scores were: South Craven 10 - 5 IGS, BGS 0-0 IGS, Oakbank 5-15 IGS, Titus Salt's 0-15 IGS, Brighouse 10-0 IGS and St. Bede's 15-0 IGS. Well done to our cross country runners who raced at Silsden Park on Wednesday. The weather held out for a sunny but windy afternoon. All runners gave their all despite a little headwind being present on the uphill stretch. A few of our usual runners could not attend due to the Community event at the Craiglands, but all-in-all it was a pleasant ending to the Cross Country season. Athletics starts next!

Year 7/8 Girls 2nd Bethan Morley (7PDH)

Year 7/8 Boys 2nd Cameron Reilly (8ADM), 6th Dominic Coy (7SP), 7th George Dey (8MWC), 14th Joe Haigh (8GPS), 16th Arran Burnett (7HED/KE), 27th Ethan Whiteside (7PDH), 28th Harry Barker (8JRW), 35th Cameron Shankland (8JRW) and 38th Matthew Carter (7LAM)

Year 9 Boys 6th Ben Thompson (9LO), 9th George Hardesty (9BJS) and 17th Jacob Hellewell (9BJS). Good luck to Desideria Sardelli (10GS) who is in the regional final of the Rotary cooking competition on Saturday

in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

You may have noticed we have been sharing our success to a wider audience with our students’ news appearing in the local press. We have nearly doubled our news articles with 15 academic weeks left to go!

We have also been busy on twitter, and the recent Careers Fair displayed the benefits of using social media within the local community. We were able to share photos, thank businesses and it really made us feel part of our locality.

So why not join us in shouting about our success stories, events and news about IGS by following us on twitter @ilkleygrammar

Are you up to the homophone exercise we have challenged our students to complete as part of the ‘Fornightly Focus’? No prizes…just your pride at stake! Answers will be next week’s Headline.

Homophones 1 Recap: One Direction Do Tesco The band wear/were/where straight of/off the plane to a new hotel. But as the hotel staff weren’t expecting them, Liam suggested they pop into Tesco to get a bit of shopping. ‘What are we doing here/hear?’ moaned Harry as his quiff started to flop. ‘I’ve been up all night. Just take me home would you.’ ‘Yeah,’ agreed Zayn, let’s get a cab from that taxi company we sang about.’ ‘But their/there are to/too/two many people in the Addison Lee, Zayn. Doesn’t Ilkley have a taxi company?’ ‘Come on lads,’ encouraged Liam. ‘Just a quick bit off/of shopping, then we can go.’ ‘But I look awful,’ continued Harry. ‘Supposing someone notices me looking like this.’ ‘Look Harry, your/you’re turning heads as you walk through the door,’ said Niall. ‘Yeah,’ agreed Louis. ‘You don’t need make up two/too/to cover up. And you wanted to wear/where/were those,’ he continued pointing at the Harry’s skinny jeans. ‘Ok,’ said Liam, taking charge. ‘So which/witch direction is the broccoli?’ ‘It’s One Direction, not Which/Witch Direction,’ moaned Harry, his quiff drooping even more. ‘Anyway, what’s wrong with pizza?’ ‘You’ve had quite enough junk food for one tour,’ added Zayn. Come on you to/two/too.’

Homophones 2 Its- is the possessive form of ‘it’- when something belongs to something. The dog wagged its tail. The school is proud of its students. It’s- the shortened form of ‘it is’, or ‘it has’. It’s another sunny day. It’s been a long time.

Quiet- an adjective, the opposite of ‘loud.’ Please be quiet. It’s too quiet in here. Quite- an adverb which means ‘very.’ Their new album is quite good. He was quite exhausted.

Passed- is an action/a verb. It has to be done by someone/something. The Government passed many laws. He passed his exams. Past- is not an action, it is a description. The book is set in the past. He ran past the window. (here the verb is ‘ran’, so ‘past’ tells us how they ran, in this case it’s an adjective).

Our- is a possessive pronoun. It is our decision. Our house, our rules. Are- is a verb, from ‘to be’. We are deciding. These are our rules.

Whether-means ‘if.’ She didn’t know whether it was a good idea or not. Weather- means sun, rain etc. ‘And here is Paul Hudson with the weather’.

Practise- is a verb (think of ‘is’ as a verb)- something you do. She is practising her serve.

Homophone (noun) a word that is pronounced the same as another word but has a different meaning or spelling, or both: The words 'sow' and 'sew' are homophones.

Fortnightly Focus; Homophones (1D Style!)

Page 13: March 21 a

Headline 21 March 2013

Page 13

Email: [email protected] @ilkleygrammar

Practice- is a noun (think of ‘ice’ as a thing)- something you go to. Tennis practice is hard work.

No- the opposite of ‘yes.’ No, I disagree. No, I will not be quiet. Know- to have knowledge of something. I didn’t know that. Who knows the right answer?

One Direction Write Another Song Liam: So, we have eight hours until the concert tonight, what should we do until then? Zayn: I think we need to practice/practise for our gig. Niall: We’ve done that already Zayn. Louis: Well maybe it’s/its time to work on another song. Harry: Great idea Louis! Its/it’s too/to/two quiet/quite round here anyway. Niall: So, what should the song be about? Liam: What about the whether/weather? Something about the sun and everyone being happy. Zayn: I don’t know whether/weather a song about the whether/weather is a good idea. Think of our/are fan base man. It would be quiet/quite a risk. I just don’t no/know if it would be cool. We need something more original. Liam: What about a song about broccoli? That’s never been done before. All (except Liam): No/know way. Harry: What is it with you and broccoli today? Louis: We need a song that tells people about who we are/our and what are/our message is Niall: That’s right- the band and its/it’s message of love and peace to all. Louis: Is that are/our message? Harry: Ok, let me run this idea past/passed you. What about a song where a boy met a girl- they past/passed in the street and then and they danced all night? Niall: I’m sure that sounds familiar… Zayn: So, shall we just practise/practise for our gig then?

Purple Tie News These are successful times for Year 7 both in terms of what they have been doing in the classroom and also the enrichment opportunities outside lesson time. The recent tracking deadline has shown students in Year 7 to be working really hard and making good progress. It has also been great to see the progress that some students are making from attending the twice weekly maths top up sessions led by post 16 iLeaders at lunchtimes. Students have really benefited from sitting alongside talented A level mathematicians when working on their Khan Academy programme. Well done for attending so willingly everyone! Outside lesson time I was delighted to hear that so many students have been involved in the Readathon and that an incredible £836 has been raised for two very worthy children's charities. It is great to know that following the success of World Book Day, students have really embraced the challenge of reading for pleasure. It is to be hoped that this becomes a life-long habit and not simply something done for a one off event. Well done everybody and a big thank you to Mrs Harrison, the school librarian, for organising the event. Finally, in another great example of iLeadership has come in the form of the weekly Friday Youth Club. So far we have 'sold out' of tickets for this session every week. Students have really enjoyed the wide variety of games available to play during this lunchtime session. Youth Club has been great fun, the highlight being the drop in dodgeball last week, if a little noisy! Well done Year 7, you are really giving your Personal Best and making the most of what IGS has to offer. I hope you will continue to do so for the rest of the year!

Career of the Week: Financial Services

The Work: the UK has a large financial services industry with a huge variety of roles in it. You are likely to need organisational skills, business sense and be good with numbers to do these jobs, but you will also need people skills too. Typical jobs include: accountancy, banking, financial adviser, insurance, pensions, stocks and shares and tax adviser/inspector.

Entry Requirements: these will vary with the level you enter the industry at. Expect to be asked for at least good GCSEs in Maths and English with subjects like business studies also proving useful. It is possible to enter this work after completing level 2 or 3 college courses in subjects like business administration or after doing an apprenticeship. Many employers also offer graduate entry schemes. Training: most employers in the financial services sector will support you in achieving the relevant professional qualifications needed to develop your career. See the directions website below for details of further qualifications in accountancy, banking, finance, insurance, investment and pensions.

Pay: after level 3 college courses or apprenticeships pay will typically be around £10-£12k. Management trainees with a degree can earn between £18 and £25k. With experience salaries can exceed £40k a year. These figures are intended as a guideline only.

One to Watch Reddit is a social news website that displays news based on your personal preferences and what the community likes. Your preferences are determined based on your history of voting stories up or down. There is no real control over what you will see and what people post. The website is not new to controversy, and has been accused of rumour mongering and ‘organising a witch hunt’ with regard to items in the news.

Are you familiar with Showbie? It’s one of the apps we regularly use when setting and marking homework. Next time you son or daughter has some homework set on it…take a look!

Our Website We are really interested in hearing your views, good and bad, on our school website ilkleygrammarschool.com. We are planning over the coming months to make some changes and improvements to the site and would appreciate your comments beforehand. Please email your comments to [email protected].

All IGS iPads should have the name and tutor group of the student owner as

part of their lock screen image. This helps when reuniting owners and iPads in

cases of forgetfulness!
