TO WORSHIP through the Word and Sacraments

Come and journey through the season of Lent The last days of Christ’s life are full of betrayal and denial. From Peter and Judas to the crowds and

Pilate, Jesus experiences time and again people’s and even the systems themselves rebelling against who he is and why he has come. His response to all the pain and loss is forgiveness. Join us as we hear of

others denial, look inward at our betrayals and receive together the forgiveness of Christ.

STAY STEADY ON YOUR FEET Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among Americans 65 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Statistics available from 2 years ago show that about 2.8 million Americans were treated in emergency departments for fall-related injuries; 27,000 older adults died from complications resulting from falls. The single most dangerous myth about falling is that it’s an inevitable part of aging. It isn’t—falls can be prevented. You can take plenty of precautions to avoid falling, public health experts say. Researchers found that combining the following strategies works best to help older people improve their odds of not falling and avoiding injury.

EXERCISING. Hands down, the best thing you can do to reduce your risk of falling is to be as active as possible. Regular

physical activity maintains muscle strength, flexibility, and balance, which makes it easier to avoid falling. Almost any kind of activity that strengthens muscles- especially leg muscles--and requires balance can reduce risk. Examples include tai chi, yoga, aerobics, stationary cycling, stair machine workouts, and even a brisk walk.

Vision Tested Regularly Researchers have long known that uncorrected vision problems add to the danger of falling. The JAMA

study found that programs combining exercise with vision assessment and correction offered the most effective combination for reducing falls.

Fall-Proofing your environment. Adapting your home to reduce the risk of falls can also keep you safe. More than half of all falls among the

elderly happen at home. Here’s how to steer clear of trouble: Clean up clutter to avoid tripping. Keep electrical cords out of your path. Remove loose carpets and rugs. Place nightlights in bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms. Install grab bars near the bathtub and toilet areas. Wear sensible shoes or slippers with nonslip soles.

Use a walking aid, such as a cane, if you feel unsteady on your feet.

Getting regular health checkups. Health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure add

to the risk of falling. During a checkup, your doctor can review the drugs you’re taking to make sure none increase your risk of falling by making you sleepy or dizzy—

such as medications that lower your blood pressure, including some for prostate problems.

2020 Endowment Fund

The St. John’s Endowment Fund was established in 2011 to Engage God In Our Daily Life by providing

funds to worthwhile ministries beyond the scope of the general operating budget of the Congregation, most of

which are not directly associated with St. John’s Lutheran Church. God has commanded us to assist in the

well-being of others. Philippians 2:4 says, “Let each look not only to his own interest, but also to the interests

of others.”

The Endowment Fund encourages Christian stewardship by providing an orderly method for receiving and

administering unrestricted gifts. The Endowment Fund may receive gifts such as general cash contributions;

beneficiary assignments of wills, trusts, retirement plans, life insurance, annuities, and certificates of deposit;

and transfers of property including but not limited to stocks, bonds, and real estate if such gifts are in

accordance with the purposes of the Fund.

Your gift to the Endowment Fund is a lasting contribution to the church and our community. The principal

will be invested and will grow for many years to come. The earned income from the Fund will support a wide

range of mission opportunities, new St. John’s programs and needed capital improvements.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST… HISTORY IN ACTION

Making Lent Meaningful This article came from the First Sunday In Lent from February 27, 1966

From Robin Hunsinger

The 46 days immediately preceding Easter have always been of deep signifi-cance to Lutherans. In a sense they are a time of revival. If we were perfect Christians, of course, we would not need to be “revived,” but since none of us is perfect it is good for us, now and then, to halt our feverish rushing about and

take the time to think seriously about the love God has shown us in Christ. The season of Lent offers a fine opportunity to do this. It should be a time of deep penitence and mourning for our sin. Leasing to a deepening of our spiritual living.

There are a number of ways we may be helped to grow in grace through this season. Here are a few: Read the Bible daily. At the center of our observance of Lent should be an earnest contemplation of the Passion of our Lord. Follow the life of Christ, through at least one of the Gospels; preferably through all four. The reading of even a few verses a day is better than reading none.

Pray regularly. When you awaken in the morning, when you retire at night, and every time you sit down to eat, say a prayer. There are countless other opportunities when you can find time to pray. Try praying for one par-ticular person each day for a week and note the effects of such prayers. If your home does not have a period of family worship, try to have one during this season. There are many helps available.

Attend church service. Prepare for meaningful worship by getting sufficient sleep Saturday night and by being in your pew for meditation before the service begins. You will be surprised at how much more the services will mean to you if you begin each one with a prayer for the pastor, the worshipers, your family and yourself.

Talk about your faith. Talk about God, prayer, the Bible, and what Christ means to you and to the world. Try mentioning such subjects where you work, or study, or visit.

Lutherans do not value Lent for the sake of accumulating merit but only for Jesus’ sake. If this season helps to make Christ supreme in our lives it has fulfilled its highest purpose.

New ways to enter old doors

New systems are coming to help administer through the grace of God. New things are happening inside the walls of St. John's and Ministry and facility use are growing.

We are in the beginning stages of implementing a Door Access-Control System at St Johns which will give us the ability to manage visitor and member access for our facilities. Please read further about our current state and how the future state and changes might affect you. As we continue to grow our ministries, our goal is to provide and maintain a safe environment for our visitors, members and staff. Current State:

* We have a manual process of locking and unlocking for worship services, special events and commit-tee meetings which

* Leads to an inconsistent in the times when doors are accessible * Doors are being found unlocked after the completing our lock-down procedures * There have been some concerns and questions about the buildings being secure during normal office

hours, worship services, committee meetings and at other times such as young families and youth events.

• All external locks will be re-keyed as part of this project • This will be communicated well in advance to allow keyholders to obtain new access

Page 14

Women’s Wellness Weekend at Lutherock – April 24-26 Take some time for yourself! This weekend will focus on taking care of ourselves physically, spiritually

and mentally. The weekend includes Bible Study and wellness opportunities such as Yoga, Aroma

Touch Therapy, Hiking, Guided Meditation, DIY Bath Salts, Essential Oils 101 and spending time

getting to know other St. John’s women! Cost is $229. We had a group go last year and we had a

wonderful time! Please contact Pam Hospodar if you are interested in attending – cell 680-5159 or

email [email protected].

* Some have experienced difficulty or delays in gaining access during week as the current process requires someone to physically open the door.

* Doors can be propped open or left unlocked. * Doors can be left unlocked without a greeter being present. * Impossible to deactivate individual numbered keys should they become lost or not turned back in after

use. Future State:

* While the physical system design has been determined, the policies and procedures have not been written in stone.

* We are meeting and working with all those who might be impacted by these changes. The goal of these meetings will be to get an understanding of the individual and group access needs while working toward providing and maintaining a safe environment for our visitors, members and staff.

* The access control system will consist of the following components: Electronic locks will only remain unlocked for a short period of time unless be held in unlocked state

from a scheduled event. * Main doors entering into the Narthex

* Office door * Carl’s kitchen door

* Both doors under the breezeway (PLC and Church) * PLC main doors facing woodland street

Door Access Readers a keychain FOB or a mobile phone Credential will be used instead of

a physical key to open the doors located at the following locations. * Office door * Carl’s kitchen door * Both doors under the breezeway (PLC and Church)

Video Entry Intercom provides the ability to open these doors remotely (monitor or mobile app)

* Office door * Both doors under the breezeway (PLC and Church)

Addition facts around the solution * All internal locks will remain the same. * All external doors will remain locked as a normal practice * All external locks will be re-keyed as part of this project

This will be communicated well in advance to allow keyholders to obtain new access * Not all external doors will be controlled by this system. * External doors not controlled by system will continue to use mechanical locks. * Lower level Sunday school wing doors will continue to be manually unlocked on Sunday’s with a

greeter presence. They will remain unlocked for a 30-minute period before re-locking, which is the current process.

How will this work?

There will be a period of testing during normal church office hours before moving forward with the roll out. This will give us time to work through any procedural or system issues before going completely live with the solution. You can expect more communication on the timeline and information about how to request your new access before the re-keying of external locks. Scheduled Worship Services and Events

For more detailed information regarding access for ministries & committees, request a full report from the Parish Administrator.

As we change on how we access the buildings, keys will no longer be needed. If you currently have a key and still need after hour access, please fill out a request form which will be available in the Narthex and

the PLC. Please fill out the form and drop it off at the office.
