Hello Past, Present, and Future Members! Welcome to the Nevada Striper Club 2018-2019 Season. We can’t start the new season without congratulating all the anglers that were honored at the 2017-2018 Season End of the Year Banquet held on February 23, 2018. We had a fantastic turn-out and everyone seemed to enjoy our first-ever potluck dinner. There were so many tasty dishes and no one went home hungry. It really was a great opportunity to meet, or re-meet, all the friends and families that make up our membership, and to see the camaraderie, not to mention the ribbing, that takes place when we all get together This is what makes us more than just a “fishing club”. Thank you to Kevin Aguilera for providing the bounce house for the kids at a super discounted rate, it sure kept them busy and happy. Our Winners: Angler of the Year – Thomas Lima Junior Angler of the Year – Taylor Keyse (you go girl!) Big Fish of the Year – Tom Lucero Top 10 Fish-Off Winner – Thomas Lima Tom Lucero, Stephen Ayala Jr, Robert Keyse, John Nutting, James Barrs, Matt Price, Robert Smithurst, Stephen Ayala, and Orlando Muntean rounded out our Top 10 anglers. And newcomer Wally Wirkus took 1st in the Barbie Pole Classic – I think he’s hooked for sure now. I would like to send a special thank you to the following people for their generous donations to our raffle: Mike Vernon Jr., Diamond Marine Service – Fish Finder Captain Don Martin, Striper Hunters – Guided Fishing Trip Jason Terry, AMI Mechanical – Golden Knights hockey tickets Bob Sequeira, Two Sunsets Vacation Home – Weekend Getaway Savage Gear – Trout Lures I would also like to say a thank you to last year’s officers: Chris Madden, Robert Keyse, James Barrs, Justin Hamilton and Mona Schouten, as well as our board members, for doing a great job in keeping our club going last year. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes workings that goes on to keep this club running and these folks deserve a round of applause. Continued from page 1 -

Our new year is kicking off on March 8th at Bass Pro Shop’s upstairs Conservation Room. The meeting will start at 7:00 pm. This is your opportunity to secure your family membership for the year (still only $30), and enter the first tournament of the season; which is March 9-11. The majority of our meetings will be in this room, but, there are a few times where we may have to change locations – we will provide you with as much advanced notice as possible when this happens. Our meetings for this year are: March 8, April 12, May 10, June 14, July 12, August 9, September 13, October 11, November 8, December 13, January 10, and February 14

We have a few club activities planned for this coming year, including the possible return of the Adopt-A-Cove program. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this program, this is our opportunity to give back to the lake by picking a cove and spending a few hours cleaning it up. Not only does it keep our lake clean, the hours that our members (friends and family too) spend helping out, turns into federal dollars allotted to our lake. These hours can also be counted as community service hours for scouting or school functions too. Stay tuned for more details.

River Tournament; I know it’s on everyone’s minds. Are we going to do it again? Possibly. There are a few additional details and qualifications to hash out, but it has not been ruled out completely. We’ll keep you updated on the developments

As our club is self-funding, and all operating money comes from the membership, we are looking at fundraiser opportunities for this year as well. All fundraising dollars go towards the monthly junior prizes, awards, plaques, and awesome raffle prizes at the end of the year banquet, as well as any special events we want to have during the year. We are always looking for different, and let’s face it, easier ways to raise money for the club, so all suggestions are welcome. Member participation is not only vital, but is highly appreciated. We are not asking for a huge commitment, just a couple of hours here and there. Right now, we are planning a garage sale in June so, as you do your spring cleaning, keep us in mind. In the past, our garage sales have been a very successful way to raise money, as well as gain the interest of new members. You have 4 months in which to gather your donations. We are also looking into having a bar-b-q or two, and/or a special raffle. The more we are out there, the more attention our club gets, the more our membership will grow.

Carroll Dominguez, the Fishing Manager for Bass Pro Shop, will be at our March meeting to get feedback from our membership about what we buy, where we get it, and how can Bass Pro help us, help them. We have had a very good relationship with Bass Pro Shops over the past several years, and, in fact, they let us the use the Conservation Room at no charge, as well as a discount on the raffle prizes we buy for the meetings, so any feedback we can give him would be appreciated. If possible, Jeremy Hendrick, the General Manager will also be joining us.

I want to thank you all for entrusting me with the presidency this year, and I look forward to an exciting year.

Your President,

Amy Wagner

Page 3 Tournament Recap By Toby Chandler

The weather looked rather nice Saturday morning with little or no wind. The water was like glass and the fish were stacked up in a little hole across from Government wash. If you are not sure of the location, there were a lot of boats there and they were catching fish. Bait was easy once the water warmed up in the late morning. A few anglers went up north, but they did not fare as well as the remainder of the pack that stayed south this tournament. The 10 ten guys played hardball and the Barbie Pole anglers just wanted 4 fish, if they could be had.

The fish were a little bigger than last February and healthy. A few BPC anglers lost bigger fish that just did not like six-pound line and just kept heading north of the dam.

Fishing seemed to be rather good until 11am and then it got slow. Then around 3pm, the wind picked up in an instant blowing with a vengeance at 20+ mph.

White caps and three-foot waves were the only thing keeping boaters from getting back to the harbors to find safety at the dock.

As a reminder, no fish may be exchanged with anyone until all tournament activities are completed

ASK THE TOP 10

Have Questions? Need Advice? Here’s your

chance to ask our top anglers.

How do I tell the difference between a

Threadfin Shad and a Gizzard Shad?

To distinguish between the Gizzard the

Threadfin, look at the lower jaw.

The threadfin shad's lower jaw protrudes out

farther than the top jaw and meet in a pointed

snout. The gizzard shad has a blunt snout with

the lower jaw set behind the upper jaw. Also,

the threadfin will exhibit yellowing fins except

for the dorsal.

Striper Patties/Cakes by Toby Chandler

2 - 6oz Striped bass fillets, cubed/chunked 2 - large eggs 1/2 tsp celery salt

1/4 tsp onion powder 1/4 tsp pepper 2 - oz cheddar cheese, shredded

2 – tbsp parmesan cheese (powder is okay) 2 – tbsp of olive oil and/or un-salted butter

Place striper chunks into boiling water, floating pieces are done and need to be set aside.

Next, place all of the ingredients in a small bowl: chill at least 30 minutes.

Heat the oil and little butter on medium heat. Drop the Striper mixture by large spoonsful into the hot oil. Flatten and shape

into patties/cakes. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until well-browned. Serve with tarter sauce or dill sauce.
