Message from the President

Dear Fiber Friends,

Usually I try to find something fun and cheerful to write about in these newsletters, but

today my heart is heavy. My cousin passed away yesterday. It has been a few years since

I've seen him, but I remember bright spring and summer days playing with him and my

other cousins at my grandmother's house. He was just a few years younger than me, and

had a two year old daughter.

If there's anything fiber-related that I want to pull from this loss, it's that life is short. Want

to learn a new skill? Don't hesitate to take a class or ask someone for help. Is the project

you're working on dragging you down? Let go of the guilt that says you have to finish it,

and work on the project that really speaks to your heart.

Take time to appreciate the people and things in life that make your heart sing. I am so

grateful for all of you, and hope to be back here in May chirping about the glories of yarn

and spring.

KNITTERS/CROCHETERS: We’ll meet at Candy’s home

THE ROCKIN’ RUGGERS: The Rockin’ Ruggers will

meet again the 14th of April, Saturday morning at 10

AM, at The Craft Studio.

If you’d like to know more about hooking and punching,

feel free to drop by and join in the fun! Questions and

newcomers are always welcome!

RIGID HEDDLE WEAVERS: The Rigid Heddle Group's next meeting will be Thursday, April 26, at the Craft Studio, at 5:30 pm. We will be discussing indirectwarping using the dishtowel pattern on the cover of Liz Gipson's Warping Made Easy.

We would like to have more programs for the rigid heddle group in the future, so if you have an idea for a program, please let Pamela S. know.

Specialty Group Meetings

KNITTERS/CROCHETERS: What a joy it was to hang out together on March 14 at Copeka Coffee and talk about fiber, knitting, socks and everything else we could think of. It is always so inspiring to see the projects everyone is doing and to receive support from other members. And, thank you, Deborah R., for the fun “yarn necklaces”!

If you’re interested, Candy T. is teaching a dye class on the second Saturday of May. Email or call her to sign up. I’ve never dyed yarn, so I’m looking forward to the experience.

This has definitely been a year of learning and experimenting (I call them adventures). Several Guild members have taken up the mantle of teaching in the community, and I have to say, I’m very proud of you all! If you are not teaching, remember there are opportunities to demo coming up at Cross Orchards. Contact me if you’d like to participate!

SPINNERS: We met on March 21st and had a lovely time spinning and visiting with one another.

HOOKERS/PUNCHERS: Rockin’ Ruggers news: We had a fantastic time on St. Paddy’s day learning about marrying wool colors! Thanks to Holly for hosting! We had camp stoves a cookin’ and crock pots too. Our Delta Co. contingent (Polly, Pat) inspired us to try out the process. We found some lovely ways to dampen down ugly plaids, etc. by throwing them into simmer with other pieces of wool. While we didn’t actually “DYE”, we did “BLEED” some different colors to get new colors we could enjoy hooking with. Linda M. will be teaching a beginning hooking class to start on March 24th. It will be at the Craft Studio. I taught miniature punch needle classes earlier in March. We had 6 students who participated and developed some perky chickens! Will try to schedule another miniature punch needle class after mid May.

There’s just too much fun to be had in Fiber Arts!! Judy B.

Lynn Hamann, a local author, wrote a book about her experiences knitting and living in Antarctica. The book includes patterns and stories. She will be reading from and signing her book on Monday March 26th from 6pm to 8pm at Outwest Books.

Lynda Teller Pete: Loom with a ViewSaturday, March 31, 2pm at The Art Center Free and open to the public

Two Grey Hills tapestry weaver Lynda Teller Pete was born into the Tabaaha (Water Edge Clan) and born for the To’aheedliinii (Two Waters Flow Together Clan). She was raised in Newcomb, New Mexico, along with her siblings. On a yearly basis, the family took up residence behind the Two Grey Hills Trading Post, where her father worked as a trader for over 35 years. At the trading post, her mother demonstrated weaving and attracted a constant flow of tourists. This program begins with a screening of Loom with a View, a short film about 3 contemporary Navajo weavers. Pete will discuss her family’s legacy of weaving, and Navajo weaving as it relates to the 150th anniversary of Bosque Redondo. She will also demonstrate weaving on a loom. Please join us as we learn more about the people and techniques behind this rich artistic tradition. (from The Art Center’s Website)

Dye WorkshopMay 12th 9am to 4pm

Candy’s home in Glade Park

Learn about dyeing warps and woven pieces. We will use acid dyes which work

on protein fibers (such as wool, silk, alpaca, angora, mohair, yak, camel, and some

nylons).

There are a number of ways to add color to warps, wefts, and pre-woven pieces.

We will be experimenting with as many variations as possible.

I.Call to Order – Pamela S. presented Copyright Law for Textile ArtistsPamela stressed that she IS an attorney, but is NOT licensed in the State of Colorado. (These notes taken directly from Pamela’s slides.)

Copyright is a form of intellectual property that protects creative work.

What can be copyrighted? • “original” – minimally creative, created by a person• “fixed in a tangible form of expression” – recorded• written work (books, magazines, text, etc.)• musical, spoken, or other recorded sounds• dramatic work, pantomimes, choreographic work• architectural work• pictorial, graphic, and sculptural workA copyright owner can: • control the reproduction and distribution of the copyrighted work• perform or display the work publicly• allow others to reproduce, distribute, perform, and display the workCopyright does NOT cover:• ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, or discoveries• titles, phrases, slogans (trademarks may cover these)• works that are not recorded• lists of ingredients or contents• useful articles or functional aspects of clothingWhy are textiles different?• The shape of clothing is functional• Surface design can be copyrighted if it is purely decorativeo ‘conceptual separability (dye on fabric is not that much different than paint on canvas), textile prints, applique, other embellishments, stranded colorwork??? cables???How to get a copyright• a copyright exists in a protected work as soon as it is created. It does not need to be published in order for the copyright to exist. • You may remind others that your work is copyrighted with a @ symbol. This usually looks like this: @ Mesa Fiber Arts Guild• You may register your copyright with the US Copyright Office.

What is Copyright Infringement?• Copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner.• A “derivative work” is a work based upon one or more preexisting works, such as a translation, musical arrangement, dramatization, fictionalization, motion picture, etc. Exceptions to Copyrights• Fair Useo Fair use looks at a combination of four factors: The purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and sustainability of the portion taken, the effect of the use upon the potential market for the original work. o Fair use is a defense to copyright infringement. You’ll never know if the work is actually fair use unless there’s actually a lawsuit. • Transformative Useo Pretty new – first recognition of the transformative use was in 1994o There are two questions that are considered: Has the material taken from the original work been transformed by adding new expression or meaning? Was value added to the original by creating new information, new aesthetics, new insights, and understandings?
