Our Mission: Encouraging Spiritual Growth, a Community for All THE PRACTICE OF PAYING ATTENTION I have some binders at home that are full of music I’ve played over the past thirty or so years. If you thumb through you’ll see little hand scrawled notes in my own non-musical language about things like arrangements (“AABACA with that chunka-chunka thing B4 last A”), dynamics (“LOUD! shhh...”), solo bits (“start on that B deedly dee thingy”), and powerful endings (“babadee bap bap bap!”). It’s not complicated or technical, but it works. With practice, each little note to myself gets repeated and repeated until it all begins to come a little more naturally. There’s one particular note that appears often: “PAY ATTENTION, PAUL!”. I need that note because I’m pretty good at looking around aimlessly, and wandering and wondering, and getting lost, and needing to find my way back…. So here’s a suggestion for this year’s Lenten discipline: practice paying attention. Here are few things that happened when I gave it a try: I saw some beautiful things (check out the ice hanging on a pine tree just outside the church door if you get a chance), I heard some interesting sounds (you may or may not like ravens and crows, but they can make the weirdest sounds if you just stop to pay attention), I realized some things I haven’t noticed before (for example, snow is rarely white; it’s blue or light or dark grey or….it all depends on the angle of the sun and the time of day). I’ve noticed some disturbing things (why didn’t I make eye contact with the cashier at the Co-op while he handed me my change?), and seen some refreshing scenes (three people at the communion rail sort of chuckling together at something, much like anyone might be doing at a dinner party hosted by a good friend). I’ve even noticed smells that I don’t usually notice, like the smell of wet not-quite -spring air. It’s not much, but maybe paying attention would be a good Lenten discipline, a good practice that would make it easier to notice what’s going on around us. We might even begin to notice what we might not otherwise see: the cashier at the store, the person on the boulevard with the “Every little bit helps” message written on cardboard, the stunning return of birds after yet another miraculous migration (surely such things are not “normal”?), the spring flow of melting snow in the Red and the Seine and the alley behind your house. We might learn to see more deeply these people, this world, this creation that Christ died to save; these people, this world, this creation that will rise to new life just as surely as we will celebrate Christ’s new life at the end of this month. An uncomplicated Lenten practice: Pay attention. Pay attention, and see and hear all the chunka- chunkas and B-deedly-dees and babadee bap bap baps and the “wow, would you look at that!”s that fill this good world that our God has made. A blessed Lent and springtime be yours. Pastor Paul

THE PRACTICE OF PAYING ATTENTION

I have some binders at home that are full of music I’ve played over the past thirty or so years. I need that note because I’m pretty good at looking around aimlessly, and wandering and wondering, and getting lost, and needing to find my way

back….

I’ve even noticed smells that I don’t usually notice, like the smell of wet not-quite

-spring air.

We might learn to see more deeply these people, this world, this creation that Christ died to save; these people, this world, this creation that will rise to

new life just as surely as we will celebrate Christ’s new life at the end of this month.

An uncomplicated Lenten practice: Pay attention. Pay attention, and see and hear all the chunka-chunkas and B-deedly-dees and babadee bap bap baps and the “wow, would you look at that!”s

that fill this good world that our God has made.

A blessed Lent and springtime be yours.

Easter

Easter, also called Pascha (Greek/Latin) or Resurrection Sunday, is a festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial after his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, pre-ceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.

The week before Easter is called Holy Week, and it contains the days of the Easter Triduum, including Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Maundy and Last Supper, as well as Good Friday, commemorat-ing the crucifixion and death of Jesus. In western Christiani-ty, Eastertide, the Easter Season, begins on Easter Sunday and lasts seven weeks, ending with the coming of the fiftieth day, Pentecost Sunday. In Orthodoxy, the season of Pascha begins on Pascha and ends with the coming of the fortieth day, the Feast of the Ascension.

to explore religious diversity in North America. Eck shows why dialogue

with people of other faiths remains crucial in today's interdependent

world--globally, na+onally, and even locally. She reveals how her own en-

My name is Adam Krentz and I am 12 years old. I’m in a family of four consis+ng my mother (Rowena), my

father (Kelly), my brother (Jonathan) and me.

I play hockey and soccer. I love playing with my friends and swimming in the pool in our backyard. Last sum-

mer I went to Europe for 4 months. We went to 16 countries and 36 ci+es. I loved it there but when it was

+me to come home I was ready.

My brother and I don’t always get along but when push comes to shove we’ve got each other’s back. My fa-

ther and I have a great rela+onship, we go on walks when it’s warm which is rare because we live in Winni-

peg. We play hockey a lot together and my father and mother both show up to almost all of my sports

games.

My mother is such a sweet and tender person. We both share something my brother and father don’t like,

we love shopping together. I bake with her some+mes and I love her dinners! God blessed me with an amaz-

ing family! I love going to church to just feel connected with God and my family’s lost ones. When I have a

family of my own one day I will take them to Epiphany Lutheran Church so they can feel connected like I do.
