70 PRIME, CULL AND STORE PIGS at 10.30 am Auctioneer: Jonathan Farrall 07796 952948

With the wintery weather making for difficult trading conditions once again, many buyers were unable to attend. The resulting trade was “challenging” to say the least! Best pigs of all classes sold readily with slight resistance towards big weights and over-fat pigs. 95kg cutters topped the market at 120p/kg for Messrs Ellis, 83kg porkers sold to 115p/kg for M Gleave and Messrs Ellis also sold 105kg Baconers at 110p/kg. Plenty of well finished clean pigs around £100 but by the same token, a good number of pigs that maybe could or should have made more. Weaner pigs lost a bit of last weeks edge, selling to £33 for 17kg, a lovely pen of pure Saddlebacks at just over 20kg failed to attract a bid – a far cry from last weeks flyer.

189 POULTRY Auctioneer: Dafydd Williams

Another cold morning in Beeston led to keen bidding and a swift sale of poultry with a good turn out of buyers once again showing it takes more than the cold to slow trade down. P.O.L are in increasing demand with those Vaccinated and Wormed achieving the top price this week with some 20 week old Bluebells and Wheaten Marans selling to £9. Barred Rock Pullets to £7.50 and a Pekin pullet to £7. Plenty of cockerels forward selling to £7 showing great demand continuing at Beeston. Demand yet again outstripping supply with calls for all types of poultry from buyers especially P.O.L. Its not just the poultry we can sell we also sell feeders, water dispensers, eggs, we have the buyers for it all! MORE STOCK NEEDED EACH WEEK!

98 NEW SEASON BUTCHERS LAMBS THURSDAY 11:30AM

Overall Average: 302.4 p/kg

Top Spot: 440 p/kg - 42.0 kg Texel Crosses- Mrs Claire Tomlinson, Agden, Malpas (£184.80 per head)

An excellent Show of New Season Lambs for the start of the New Lamb season, and well supported by all our regular buyers, as well as a few additional Butchers looking to treat their customers to something special over the Easter weekend. Expertly judged by renowned finished Lamb producer Roger Bailey, who found his Champion in a 42 kg Texel Cross from Claire Tomlinson, which went on to sell for 440 p/kg to Richard Hobday of WhitePeak Farm Butchery, Matlock, Derbyshire, with the Reserve Champion, also a 42 kg Texel Cross, this time from Mark Hazlehurst, Hyde, Stockport, making 370 p/kg to Northwich butchers C. Webb and Sons. The Charollais Society award for the best pair of Charollais-sired Lambs went to 39 kg from R. and E. L. Blockley, Winsford, which sold for 350 p/kg to Harry James, for Staffordshire Meat Packers, Werrington. Plenty of quality New Lambs over 350 p/kg from a number of producers, with only some very lightweights, or very heavyweights, making less than 300 p/kg.

340 OLD SEASON LAMBS Overall Average : 233.07 p/kg

Top Spot: 307 p/kg – 45.4 kg Texel Crosses-R and S Bailey, Rushton Spencer, Leek. ( £139.38 per head)

The smallest entry of Old Season Lambs we have seen for a long, long time….which was a shame as all buyers came armed and ready to fire, but just couldn’t find enough to fulfil all orders. Absolute belter of a trade right through, with Roger Bailey again supplying just what the customers want to lead the day at 307 p/kg. All top quality, meated Old Season Lambs over 260 p/kg, with many grossing up to well over £120. We do try to look after our Vendors every week……and pay you on the day! So come to BEESTON for friendly, professional service, a top trade….and take your money home with you! We’re not so far away! Plenty of vendors from North and East Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire, N Wales and Anglesey have found the way to Beeston-why not give it a go?! 121 CULL COWS 10.00am Auctioneer: Simon Lamb 07815 188125

Topping at 156p or £1171

Numbers remain very similar to that of last week, with trade very much the same too. An entry full of hard worked plain cows this week, with the odd exception. As has been the case for some weeks now, trade for the bottom end very dear, but meated cattle a flyer once again, with the better end of the dairy cattle easily past 135ppk topping in the late 140’s for 5yr Friesians. Comparing those to the plain cows however, with very little under 100 pence, and nothing under 69 pence with plenty of light weight parlour cows amongst the entry, I know which one I’d rather eat! Foreign tagged cows remain in hot demand, with absolutely no difference between UK bred and those from the continent. Feeding types always a premium, especially with a pre movement test. As is always the case, plenty of buying power for all grades of cattle, keep them coming!!! Top prices as follows: 156p (HER) J Clarkson; 153p (HOL) DM & PJ Kinsey; 152p (HOL) DM & PJ Kinsey; 150p (HOL) DM & PJ Kinsey; 149p (FR) (Cheshire Vendor); 149p (FR) D R H Agri; 146p (HOL) DM & PJ Kinsey arry; 144p (AYR) D Mort; etc……………… Please don’t hesitate to call Simon Lamb on 07815 188125. Today’s market average (all black and white), coming in at 119.73ppk or £735.84 per head. (Everything in, including the lean, mean, lame and loopy!) Black and white cows traded throughout the day at 135p to 147p for meated cows(140p to 160p younger models), 115p to 130p for steakers, 100p to 115p for stronger plain cows and 80p to 100p there after!

169 STORE CATTLE Auctioneer: Jonathan Farrall 07796 952948

With lambing at full swing and the dry weather enabling a few to get in the fields, it was great to see another strong entry in the stores. New sellers and buyers appearing every week ensure a shed full of cattle and, crucially, someone for everything on offer. There were less short-keep cattle on offer today than of late, the entry generally made up of longer-keep, summering type steers and heifers. Leading the steer trade was Mark Jones with 19mo Angus to £1200 and £1185, a belting pair of Herefords from Mr Paul Wain made £1180 and there were countless over £1000. Another grand consignment from the Peak District topped at 250p/kg. Heifer trade told a similar story; The Willingtons topped the section in fine style with their home-bred Lims to £1230, Martin Platt sold Blues to £1130 and Pedigree Angus heifers from Katie Waterworth peaked at £1070. Once again, there were some superb suckler-bred types on offer, the Wilton Family out in front at 261p/kg. Nice to see a few feeding bulls and younger cattle through the ring today, plenty of trade about with bulls to £930 for Rob Darlington and 10/11mo steers from the same good home regularly over £800, selling to £880 for 10mo Lim x. Thank you all for your continued support and if you have stores to sell, bring them where the buyers are; EVERY WEEK AT BEESTON, only 14 recorded purchasers today but that’s still 13 more than selling them at home to ONE MAN! Don’t hesitate to call Jonathan for any advice on marketing store/beef cattle or better still try some next week.

FREE SHEEP SCAB TESTING IN WALES

Sheep Farmers in Wales may be interested in making use of a free sheep scab testing service, being offered from 15th December 2017 – 31st March 2018. It is hoped the scheme to examine samples for sheep ectoparasites, being supported by Welsh Government, will provide accurate diagnoses to aid the identification of the most appropriate treatment methods. Testing is being done at the specialist parasitology department at APHA Carmarthen Veterinary Investigation Centre (VIC) – but samples should be sent via your vet, accompanied by full clinical history, using the appropriate form here or here. For further information, contact Carmarthen VIC at [email protected] or 012672 35244

Basic Payment Scheme 2018 It’s the time of year again in which BPS claims need to be completed, please find below a summary of this year’s updates :- The RPA have undertaken proactive land change detection (PLCD) mapping updates which can lead to incorrect land data. Therefore it is extremely important to check your online maps and query and incorrect updates, these can include land cover changed, temporary electric fences mapped as permanent boundaries etc Is your land currently, or sometime doing the year going to be affected by transport or utility works? If such works last for over 28 days you must withdraw the land from your BPS application to prevent a penalty, compensation for the loss of BPS payment can be claimed for. Transferring land to a new owner or tenant can be completed online, if an error occurs during this process you must complete a paper RLE1 form to transfer/remove the affected parcel. We have now began the process of transferring entitlements, we expect further entitlements to come onto the market in the coming weeks therefore ensure that you have the current number of entitlements to match the eligible hectares in which you are claiming on. If they are not used, you will lose them! New greening rules, with key changes including ‘trees in a line’ under the EFA hedges option, the inclusion of field margins under the EFA buffer strip option and EFA fallow cover now converts to permanent grassland and the management rules have now changed. We are now taking instructions to undertake BPS claims for 2018, do not hesitate to contact Andrew, Jonty or Stephen if you would like to book an appointment or require further information.
