Several years ago, there was an article in the New York Times by best-selling author, Bruce Feiler, titled “The Stories That Bind Us.” In this article, he spoke about the importance of family stories that generations tell one another about themselves. In this article, he spoke about the “Do you know?” ques-tions that children will sometimes ask parents. These ar-en’t questions to get the right answer to homework, but rather family origin stories: do you know where your grandparents went to high school? Do you know about when someone in our family had a terrible illness? Feiler quotes a research project from Emory University about familial resilience. The researchers of these studies were uniquely poised to do this research because they began with families in early 2001, and then continued the research after the trauma of 9/11. The most resil-ience was with families that took time to share family stories. Feiler writes:“The more children knew about their family’s history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem and the more successfully they believed their families functioned. The “Do You Know? scale turned out to be the best single predictor of children’s emotional health and happiness.”It is also inspiring for us that we have an entire holiday dedicated to sharing a meal, remembering, retelling and re-living our family’s story. This is the emotional DNA of Passover.

I have written about Passover before, but this article made me see it in a new light. For the Seder to be maximally successful – it can’t be limited to one or two nights of Passover. The mitzvah of “you shall tell your child…” is incumbent upon us all the days of our lives. The seder, though, gives us the model. Think of all the elements that set the stage for effective family story telling: we allow (encourage) the children to ask us stories about our family (“mah nishtanah…”). We create triggers – like symbolic foods – that remind us of our family’s story. We share a meal that is prepared with love, and that itself often carries family stories in the recipes and ingredients (“Bubbe’s matzo ball soup, our aunt’s kugel, etc.). We allow for stories that bring pain and joy, and live deeply in both of these emotions. We allow the stories to teach us about our lives today. The greatest challenge in our hyper-current world – is connecting our individual family story to the larger family story of the Jewish people. By taking time at meals, though, to share stories of our individual family and from the Torah and from Jewish history, perhaps we can demonstrate that these are not separate threads but part of the same fabric. Annie, Gavi, Ellie and Dani join me in wishing you and your loved ones a very joyful Pesach!

Passover: the Original Story that Binds Us

Every week a few people make calls to remind people they have a yahrzeit of an immediate family member. We need people who are willing to make 5-10 calls. Callers can choose if they want to call every week, every other week or 1 time a month. Please consider helping with this nice service to

members of our synagogue. If you are able to receive emails, you can do this. If you can help, please call or email Rita Sha-piro, who is coordinating this service. [email protected] or 816-941-9592.

From the Desk of Bernie FriedLife Lesson 6: Look Out World; Here I ComeOscar Wilde wrote, “Be yourself. Everybody else is already taken.” Why is it many of us dream of being someone else? Remember when you wished to be the cool guy or girl, the most popular kid in school? When was the last time you wished you were someone else? When was the last time you tried to be another person because you didn’t think you would fit in if they saw the real you?

I remember a poster in my daughter’s room when she was an infant that read, “Be patient. God isn’t finished with me yet.” God made us in his image. He decides when we come into this world; He decides when we leave this world. In between, it is up to us to live our life as we choose in the persona we choose. The best persona is the one we were intended to be. So, instead of trying to be someone else, why not try to be the best version of you. As that famous philosopher Dr. Seuss said, “Today you are you; that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is youer than you.”

Bestselling author Jessica Sorensen wrote, “Be who you were supposed to be instead of who they make you feel like you should be.” Rather than trying to be someone else, try being yourself. Not only the “yourself ” you are today, but the best “yourself ” you can possibly be.

We all dream about being the best at whatever we do, to reach the pinnacle of excellence. Motivational speaker Maxie McCoy put this in perspective when she commented, “Instead of focusing on being the best (at what you do), focus on being the best you can possibly be.”

Join me in committing to be the best ‘You’ you can possibly be. And from where do I get this wonderful insight? From the best source possible, that Maven of Mischief Dennis the Menace who said, “The best thing you can do is to get good at being you”. Hey world, I’m almost there.

I can’t wait until tomorrow because I believe I am getting better every day. Let’s all focus on getting better every day. One day, I know I will emerge as the best me I can possibly be. And then, I will strive to be even better. One day, we all will emerge as the best we can possible be.

Hello World. Here I Am.

Congregations Help Feed the Hungry for PassoverHunger never takes a holiday. As we approach the season of Passover, there will be hundreds among us who will struggle to put food on the table let alone those special items to celebrate a Seder.

YOU can help make a difference. Join Jewish Family Services, The Rabbinical Association of Greater Kansas City and area congregations in collecting Passover food items. (The first Seder begins Friday, March 30) More than 160 families will be helped through your participation in the Passover food drive.

Among the items needed are grape juice, matzah and matzah meal, cake meal, baking mixes, matzah ball mix and soup. Our congregation has chosen to collect donations of matzah ball soup mix and grape juice; packaged items

should be labeled “Kosher for Passover”. Drop off items at Beth Shalom through March 19. Monetary donations are also being accepted by check or online through the JFS site http://www.jfskc.org/; funds are used to purchase food items to include in the holiday food packages. By participating in the Passover Food Drive you are putting into action the traditional words of the Haggadah, ‘let all who are hungry come and eat”.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available in connection with the Passover Holiday Food Drive. If you or someone you know wants to volunteer, please call 913-730-1410 or email [email protected]. For more information about the Food Pantry, please contact Jo Hickey, JFS Food Pantry Director at 913- 327-8257 or email her at [email protected].

Have you ever thought about the Jewish opportunities for our teens? Take a moment to consider the options that exist, be it through what you have heard from others or witnessed first-hand. For me, several things come to mind. Here is a list I came up with: youth groups, sleep-away camp, Shabbat services, reading Torah, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Jewish holidays in the home and at synagogue, Religious/Hebrew High School, Jewish-sponsored travel trips, leadership programs, Birthright, Jewish sorority or fraternity, Hillel, KC Federation programming, and events through the Jewish Community Center. When you take a moment to consider these opportunities, it certainly provides many options for our teens to discover about themselves, engage with others in our community and find a connection to our faith.

Being involved Jewishly for teens may actually be easier than we realize due to the relative familiarity they may feel with many of these programs. Whether it is a spiritual, religious or social Jewish involvement there is a foundational commonality among Jewish teens when they are interacting with other Jewish teens. There really isn’t a need for “the ice breaker” because the comfort often already exists! This can be powerful for strengthening their Jewish identity and it has a tendency to build upon itself over time as our teens continuously engage.

As teens gain more independence and stronger opinions about where they want to spend their time, who then is ultimately responsible for whether they are involved in any of these options? The teen? The parent? As a parent, what can we do to support our teens in creating this long-lasting connection? I’ve heard many parents talk about their role with varying degrees

of influence and with differing degrees of success. That can be very frustrating! Like any other core value a parent might desire for their kids, aiding in some way a connection to our faith can serve as a powerful guide for their future Jewish identity into adulthood.

For parents who feel they have very little impact on their teenagers in this area, I believe parents can still offer SOMETHING towards supporting our teens long-term connection with Judaism. Keeping in mind that each family, teenager and situation is different, consider these three parental responsibilities for their teen’s connection to Judaism that can be effective for any family: 1) Role Model 2) Exposure 3) Encourage

Role-Modeling: We know this as parents, how powerful role modeling is for our kids. The best is to find opportunities that are significant to you and those that you are open to exploring.

Exposure: This is my personal favorite and quite an important reminder to all of us that exposure gives our teens an awareness to what is out there Jewishly, while providing them with the chance to figure out what aspects are meaningful to them.

Encourage: This seems easy but speaking from a parent of a teenager, this can be the toughest part. Encouraging what we think is right? What the teenager thinks is right? Or some overlap of the two? I am still learning the balance between the two while focusing the encouragement around “planting the seeds” for further consideration.

Executively Speaking

Connecting Teens to Judaism – Our Role as Parents

by DANA SCHWARTZ

Bottom line, you never know what will “stick” or resonate with our teens! Perhaps our role in helping our teens enhance their Jewish connections will have a greater positive long-term impact than we could have ever imagined! One day, it will be our teenagers’ turn to take on the role of the parent. Let’s do our best to offer this next generation of Jewish adults the modeling, exposure and encouragement for future generations of Jewish teens.

Linda Lessner will be honored as a “Woman of Valor” at the annual Beth Shalom Sisterhood Torah Fund Luncheon on April 5. Linda was a recipient of the Sisterhood Past Presidents’ Leadership Recognition Award. In addition to being Sisterhood President from 2011-2013, she was Sisterhood Membership V.P., Sisterhood Education Co-V.P. and assisted with the Torah Fund Campaign and annual luncheon. Linda has chaired both the Sisterhood/Congregational calendar and the Sisterhood Annual Movie Event. She has also volunteered in the Sisterhood Gift Shop. Currently, Linda chairs the Sisterhood Long-Range Planning Committee.

During her working career, she was President of the Women’s Transportation Club of Greater Kansas City. Linda’s activities in the Brandeis National Committee included serving as Co-President for four years and working on their Listen and Learn educational programs.

At CBS Linda has been co-chair for Steppin’ Out, a social group for age 60 and older congregants and friends who met quarterly for dinner and entertainment. She has participated in Lechem’s serving of hot meals for the needy. Currently she serves on the Board of Directors and is the congregation’s liaison to the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle.

In Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, IntraContinental Region, Linda’s responsibilities included Ways and Means Chair, Area Director and Board of Directors member.

Linda and her husband Larry have two children and two grandchildren. For the above reasons and her willingness to always lend a hand when asked, Linda is very deserving of being honored as a “Woman of Valor.”

Sisterhood

Sisterhood Book Club will meet on Wednesday, April 25 at 1:30 pm at the JCC in the large boardroom on the main floor. The club will be discussing “Moonglow” by Michael Chabon.

“In 1989, the author, Michael Chabon traveled to his mother’s home in Oakland, California to visit his terminally ill grandfather. Tongue loosened by powerful painkillers, memory stirred by the

imminence of death, Chabon’s grandfather shared recollections and told stories the younger man had never heard before, uncovering bits and pieces of a history long buried and forgotten. The novel collapses an era into a single life and a lifetime into a single week.“

For more details or to attend, contact Linda Lessner at 913-897-0122 or at [email protected]; or Irma Katz at 816-943-3469 or at [email protected].

Sisterhood Calendar CampaignBerenice Haberman and Bev Newman, Calendar Co-chairs, announce that Sisterhood has launched its 2018-19/5779 Congregational Calendar Campaign of selling listings, tributes and ads to its congregants and advertisers in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The calendar is Sisterhood’s major fundraising project, and its proceeds support both congregation and Sisterhood programs. The calendar/directory is complimentary to all Beth Shalom congregants, non-congregant Sisterhood members and advertisers.

Over the years, the calendar has been a valuable advertising vehicle for many area businesses. We welcome all congregational business leaders to consider this tool in their promotional planning for the coming year. It is a great value and opportunity to advertise one’s business every day for 16 months. Our professional designer can create your ad and accommodate you in any way to meet your advertising budget. Full page ads are also available in color for a minimal extra charge. For further information contact Berenice Haberman, 913-894-6657 or [email protected]. Ad forms are available at the Beth Shalom website, http://bethshalomkc.org/events/sisterhood/.

Please complete your ad form and return it with your check payable to Beth Shalom Sisterhood by April 3.

Everyone is invited to join Sisterhood on Thursday, April 5, in Goldsmith Hall to celebrate the success of our 75th annual Torah Fund campaign and enjoy a delicious Passover luncheon catered by Steve Ellenberg and Bagel Works. Hors d’oeuvres and wine begin at 11:00 am in the Grand Hall.

The afternoon’s entertainment will be provided by Fall Risk, a jazz and funk band comprised of nine KU students. During the luncheon the Past Presidents’ Leadership Recognition Award will be presented to Gloria Sher and the Woman of Valor Award will be presented to Linda Lessner. Invitations have been mailed. Guests are welcome. Both reservations and donations (including previous pledges) are due by March 23 in order for contributor names to be included in the program. Parashat HaShavua is an ongoing, monthly program taking place every third Shabbat of the month at 9:00 am in the conference room. The goal of this program is to engage its participants in a stimulating discussion of the weekly torah portion in a friendly atmosphere, where the difference of opinions is respected and questions are encouraged.

The next session will take place on March 17, when PARASHAT VAYIKRA will be discussed. An informal atmosphere and deep level of discussion are the trademarks of this gathering. No prior experience is required, and everybody is welcome to join.
