Memory CornerA Support Guide for Caregivers

By Ava M. Stinnett

Whether it happens gradually or overnight, there’s a distinct possibility that one day youwill become a caregiver for a loved one. It may be for a parent, a spouse, or even one ofyour children. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, there are over 65 millionunpaid caregivers of adults aged 65 and older in the United States. Often, there's verylittle preparation for the daily challenges that caregivers face.

There are numerous city and state education programs and services to address theneeds of those who provide long-term care for loved ones at home. You’ll also find manywonderful books that address the topic of caregiving. But what about those times whenyou need to talk to someone who is traveling a parallel journey, another caregiver whocan offer not just a sympathetic ear, but a possible solution to a challenge? A supportgroup may be the perfect solution.•Carlton Senior Living offers a Dementia SupportGroup at each of our communities that offer Memory Care. The support group isdesigned to facilitate discussion about each persons personal journey with dementia, while providing valuable information about the disease progression.

Perhaps what is most helpful in these communities is an open forum for the types ofquestions, comments, and emotional support that one may not find in a best-sellingbook. For example, practical questions, such as how to manage doctor’s appointments, insurance paperwork, and how to take time off work are addressed. But there are alsovery poignant and soul-searching topics, such as:

· “I miss my mom, even though she’s sitting next to me.”· “How do I tell my husband that I’ve decided to have someone come in for a few

hours a day while I'm at work? I’m exhausted and could really use some help but Idon’t want to upset him.”

· “My mom is receiving birthday cards from friends who may not be aware of herAlzheimer’s diagnosis. Should I let them know and if so, how?”

· “My dad seems lonely and fearful and follows me from room to room. I’ve assuredhim that he’s safe and that I’ll always be here. How do I deal with the resentmentthat’s building because other family members aren’t here to help out?”

Sometimes, just knowing that you’re not alone is all it takes to stay the course. Reachout to the Memory Care Director in your community for information about the nextscheduled Dementia Support Group.

Dear Resident, Families, and Friends,

Can you believe we are already in March. Where does the time go? I don't know about you, but I am prettyexcited to see March here, that means Spring is right around the corner. Hopefully with Spring coming the

rain will go away. I know we needed the rain, but enough is enough. I look forward to waking up to the brightblue skies and the sun shinning all day long.

March is one of my favorite months here at Carlton. It's the month I celebrate my anniversary with CarltonSenior Living. March 1st I will be celebrating 12 years as the Executive Director in Sacramento. Upon my

reflection of my time spent with Carlton Senior Living I am reminded how truly fortunate I am to spend mydays at this community. I have the wonderful privilege to come to work everyday with some of the best staffin the business. Where would we be without them? I shudder to think. And in turn, what good is exceptionalstaff, without exceptional residents to care for. I have said it before, and I will say it again, we have awesomeresidents. I remain in awe of our residents everyday. They are all so giving, and excepting of new residents. They want fulfilling lives and they live their lives to the fullest. I’m always impressed with the community’svibrancy. It’s a pleasure to see residents enjoying themselves in different activities, making new friends, and

on a daily basis. I believe we have the best residents in town. I’m always greeted with a warm smile, so I can’thelp but admire our resident’s zest for life. I am blessed to call Carlton Senior Living my home away from

home.

I’m truly honored to be part of the Carlton family. As the Executive Director, I’m here to serve you, so you’llfind my door is open to residents, families, visitors, and staff. Please come by for a visit. If we haven't met I

would love to meet you.

Enjoy the spring weather, enjoy our fabulous staff, and most important, enjoy your life daily.Warmest Regards,

Local Produce report is in.... crops are beginning to be harvested for Delta Asparagus.Although we have been utilizing California Asparagus, local tender Delta Asparagus will be aphenomenal accentuate to our menus. Unfortunately in the same report, Avocado crops are

50% behind in growth. This will mean less frequent use of Avocado in spring menus. However, on the bright side we are seeing the sun and the crops for local greens, fruits, and

vegetables are now on track for late spring and summer harvest.

New to the kitchen, we are seeing a soon change to our Alternate Menu. Yes, the left sidemenu will be changing soon. Currently all Chefs, within our 11 properties, are

getting together to help standardize our All Day Menu. I ask that you submit suggestionsand ideas to help me petition for what our resident want. I know several residents have

UC Berkeley Study on Fall PreventionSystems for Memory Care

In the event of a fall, staff will beable to review the footage of the fallto assess possible head injurywhich can be difficult to evaluate indementia care. Existing care policiesat the community will remain inplace to ensure resident safety.

!

Our Occupational Therapist willreview falls to assess the cause andgive personalized professionalrecommendations to facilitymanagement. We wish to see if thisreduces the fall rate following an80% reduction in our first pilot.

Your feedback will be used to createa real-time fall detection system. Ouraim is to provide residents with asafe home and caregivers withpeace of mind.

Cameras will be placed inparticipating resident rooms. Theyrequire no active maintenance, record no audio and adhere to strictprivacy standards set by DSSCommunity Care Licensing.

The purpose of this study is1. To record videos of fall events to determine if

personalized recommendations from anoccupational therapist reduces the fall rate

2. To develop computer algorithms for detectingfalls from video.

From video review, a preliminary 80% reduction in thefall rate occurred in our first pilot community which weare now seeking to confirm.

Your community has decided to participate, but yourparticipation is completely voluntary. If you decide toparticipate you will be required to:● Meet with research staff by phone or in person to

discuss the study and provide informed consent● Allow researchers to record fall videos in the

private room of the participant● Meet with research staff once per month by

phone to discuss falls from the previous month. No videos will be shared without your explicitpermission which you may choose to give at theconclusion of the study.

If you and your loved one would like to participate in thestudy, please reach out to the Memory Care Director atyour community for more information. The cameraequipment will be installed in March, and the datacollection will start in April 2017.

We never cease to be and we never cease to expand (the mind)…the only thing in question is, in THISmoment of expansion, Are you having a joyful moment?” Abraham-Hicks

What I’ve learned in my continuing studies is that God and the Universe is full of positive energy. It isavailable to all of us when we access it with the right attitude along with positive thoughts or words. When we focus on what we want instead of that which we do not want, we are accessing positive, constructive energy. For instance, if we are thirsty and yearning or craving a glass of water, we certainlydo not fill a glass with sand and hope to quench our thirst, do we? No, of course not. We fill the glasswith water and drink. Yet, with most of our desires, prayers, or pleas for change, we fill our “glass withsand.”

We want one thing, but keep asking for the opposite. Many of us really want/need change in our lives butjust can’t figure out why it isn’t happening. For example, when we say, “I’m really worried about - - -“we’ve set up the negative scene, identified our mood, involved more people by telling them about it(complaining), which gives it more negative energy, and rest assured, it is not going to serve you well.

Another way we focus on negative energy is to say or think, “I remember . . .” and when we do that, ifthe memory is not pleasant or positive, we are reactivating everything that happened and giving it newpowerful energy, and it instantly creates a negative mood. We can choose to be happy or sad, positive ornegative. The responsibility is totally ours. For instance, today I had a most painful experience withsomeone and it fired up all the ingredients for me to create a negative mindset and ruin a perfectly goodweekend. I had to decide if I would allow it to effect me or not. My children called to support me andreminded me that manure is best left on the ground. Bless them. And yes, we all need reminders becausewhen we are deep in the midst of misery we tend to forget about using many of the tools we possess.

The good news is that we don’t have to be a “victim” to circumstances or to what others can activatearound us. Now you can collect the tools you need and begin to practice activating the type of positiveenergy that does serve you well. It’s important to remember that we cannot deactivate negative energy, because when we focus on negative energy, it activates negative energy. We will focus on that which ispositive and good. To quote and/or paraphrase Abraham-Hicks, “When you activate positive, constructive, energy on purpose, you change your point of attraction. And when you change your point of attraction, you change what happens to you.” We want to practice activating positive energy so that we can becomegood at creating this positive energy around ourselves and while we practice getting better and better, westart the process of winning. Eventually it will become easy. Take these simple steps to help you developpositive energy:

1. Breaths deeply – focus on your breathing for several minutes and relax. Breath is life.2. Have an attitude of gratitude and appreciation right before you slumber3. In the morning, assume an attitude of “well-being” no matter how you feel.4. Go about your day expecting the best, focusing on well-being and a loving attitude.5. Be intimately aware of the way that you feel - guide your thoughts so that they are positive and

constructive. If things don’t feel right within you, stop and ask yourself what is making you ornery, aggravated, irritable or disappointed about something. Is it because you aren’t getting what youwant? Are you feeling sorry for yourself? Now laugh at yourself and change your thoughts so youcan enjoy your day.

6. At the end of the day, collect all the good thoughts and actions and put them in a pretendGratitude Box – you may want to write them down in a little notebook so that you can look at themoften and see your list grow. That way you’ll be able to watch yourself develop into a more positiveperson, and who knows, some of those wrinkles may disappear along with the negative thoughts youused to carry around. And make it fun and be joyful.
