MARCH 2016 MONTH OF MARCH “In like a lion, out like a lamb” is the saying for March. As I am writing this newsletter while it is 45 degrees outside, I certainly hope it holds true. March, like always is a very busy month. Life Long Learning begins its season by bringing five very interesting and educational lectures to The Cypress, including Michelle Audet and Jane Sine’s lectures which are always so well received. March is also the month we leave on our annual Cypress Cruise. This time we are traveling to the Dutch Islands in the Caribbean. TRAVEL PLANS We are getting ready for our trip to Charlotte to see Carole King’s Beautiful . Hotel and dinner reservations are made and we’ve hired a chartered bus. There are still tickets available and room on the bus if you are interested in joining the group. The trip to the Chautauqua Institution’s 2016 Summer Festival is planned for early July, 2016. If you haven’t already, please let Randi or Mary B. McDowell know if you are interested in this trip or if you would like more information. Looking ahead to 2017, two very exciting cruises have caught my eye. One, the brand-new HollandAmerica’s MS Koningsdam, is sailing to the Southern Caribbean in late January and the other, a Mississippi River Cruise, is in the planning stages for late spring. Both promise to be unique cruising experiences for new or experienced travelers alike. Please call Randi for more information regarding these trips. MusicalSunday, March 6

Departing at 2:15 p.m.$25.00 per ticket

Smoke on the Mountain tells the story of a Saturday Night Gospel Sing at a country church in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains in 1938. The show features two dozen rous-ing bluegrass songs played and sung by the Sanders Family, a traveling group making its return to performing after a five-year hiatus. Pastor Oglethorpe, the young and enthusiastic minister of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, has enlisted the Sanders Family in his ef-forts to bring his tiny congregation into “the modern world.” Between songs, each family member “witnesses” -- telling a story about an important event in their life. Though they try to appear perfect in the eyes of a congregation who wants to be inspired by their songs, one thing after another goes awry and they reveal their true -- and hilariously imperfect - natures. By the evening’s end, the Sanders Family has endeared themselves to us by revealing their weaknesses and allowing us to share in their triumphs. Please sign up on My.Cypress or at the Activi-ties Desk.

14 Special Morning Concert:THE HARVARD

OPPORTUNES A CAPPELLA

GROUP Monday, March 14

11:00 a.m.The Cypress Hall

In 1980, two H a r v a r d -Radcliffe stu-dents, Simin Ya z d g e r d i and Suzanne Goldsmith, transformed a loosely orga-nized singing group known

as the Harvard Squares into Harvard’s first full-fledged mixed a cappella ensemble, The Harvard Opportunes.Over the years, they’ve won widespread ac-claim for their intricate harmonies and bold stage presence. Though they are all seasoned musicians, their interests span Harvard’s vast curriculum and they participate in count-less clubs, athletics, publications, service programs, and other performance groups. As Harvard’s oldest co-ed a cappella group, the Opportunes strive not only to produce consistently high-quality live and recorded music, but also to engage their dedicated network of supporters—including family, friends, fans, and alumni—and do business in a way that reflects their group’s mission to build a sustainable organization. To do this, they operate according to the following core principles:1. Learning and performing music in ways that are innovative and cutting-edge 2. Expanding the reach of our music to new audiences at both the local and National levels 3. Drawing on the knowledge and ex-periences of previous members of our group to enhance long-term viability, increase institutional memory, and pre-serve the social fabric of our organization 4. Understanding the wide array of our audiences both within and beyond Har-vard’s campus, and catering our music to bringing them excitement and joy 5. Maintaining an environment that is both professional and light-heartedDon’t miss this exciting Morning Concert featuring this talented collegiate group. New Books in the Library for MarchAll the Light We Cannot See (Large Print)By Anthony DoerrAn Amazon Best Book of the Month, May 2014: Does the world need yet another novel about WWII? It does when the novel is as inventive and beautiful as this one by Anthony Doerr. In fact, All the Light We Cannot See--while set mostly in Germany and France before and during the War--is not really a “war novel.” Yes, there is fear and fighting and disappearance and death, but the author’s focus is on the interior lives of his two characters. Marie Laure is a blind 14-year-old French girl who flees to the countryside when her father disappears from Nazi-occupied Paris. Werner is a gadget-obsessed German orphan whose skills admit him to a brutal branch of Hitler Youth. Never mind that their paths don’t cross until very late in the novel, this is not a book you read for plot (although there is a wonderful, mysterious subplot about a stolen gem). This is a book you read for the beauty of Doerr’s writing-- “Abyss in her gut, desert in her throat, Marie-Laure takes one of the cans of food…”--and for the way he understands and cherishes the magical obsessions of childhood. Marie Laure and Werner are never quaint or twee. Instead they are powerful examples of the way average people in trying times must decide daily between morality and survival.

The Paris Architect By Charles BelfoureHow far would you go to help a stranger? What would you risk? Would you trade your life for another’s in the name of what is right? Belfoure explores these questions and others in this debut novel set in Paris during the Nazi occupation. Lucien Bernard—who, like the book’s author, is an architect—is offered a large sum of money to outsmart the Gestapo by devising unique hiding places for Jews, though he knows that anyone caught helping them will be tortured and killed by the Germans. Danger is everywhere: Lucien’s mistress, Adele, a successful fashion designer, has an affair with a Gestapo colonel. Lucien’s new assistant will betray him in a heartbeat. Offered a juicy German factory commission that involves working with a Nazi officer who admires architecture and art, Lucien’s web weaves more complexly. And when he falls in love with Adele’s assistant, rescues a child, and contacts some of the individuals he’s saved, the stakes grow higher and Lucien’s thoughts turn from money to vengeance. Seamlessly integrated architectural details add to the excitement. Belfoure’s characters are well-rounded and intricate. Heart, reluctant heroism, and art blend together in this spine-chilling page-turner.The Road to Little Dribbling: Adventures of an American in BritainBy Bill BrysonAn Amazon Best Book of January 2016: The Road to Little Dribbling comes twenty years after Bill Bryson’s Notes from a Small Island, in which he first described his love affair with his adopted Great Britain. That first book was laugh-out-loud funny, and so is this one. It opens with Bryson describing (hilariously) the perils of growing older, eventually revealing the author’s successful passing of the Life in Britain Knowledge Test (thus, making him a British citizen). The rest of the book follows that pattern: Bryson describes getting older, and he describes Great Britain via a trip he took across the 700 mile long island. While he tried to avoid places he visited in Notes from a Small Island—he does revisit Dover—those who read the first book will enjoy a welcome sense of the familiar—even if Bryson appears to have grown a little more cynical and angry with age. But give the guy a break: the world is changing, even his beloved “cozy and embraceable” island. And as he writes in the book, “I recently realized with dismay that I am even too old for early onset dementia. Any dementia I get will be right on time.”

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARYBy Julia Whelan

You’ve probably noticed that the magazines in the library have found a new home. They are now located in racks at each end of the shelves that house the New Books. Don’t forget to look in both places when looking for a magazine. All of your favorites are still there, ar-ranged in alphabetical order. We’ve added a new magazine called “The Week.” It is a “spirited newsweekly that distills the best of news, opinions and ideas from the US and international media. Its focus is broad: news, health, books, film, the arts and more, covering the entire political waterfront.” Many of its articles are reprints of news and columns from papers and magazines from around the world. It gives an idea of what is being considered and thought about in other countries. We hope you’ll find it interesting. The Preston Health Center is in need of Magazines. If you have any that you would like to donate, they would be very appreciative.

IN THE CYPRESS HALL

Thanks to Cypress Member, Marilyn Lorenz, the Cypress Hall now has brand new beautiful flower arrange-ments to use for center pieces. These arrangements were all hand-made by Marilyn and look so authentic you will swear you can smell their sweet aroma. Thank you Marilyn for your creativity and thank you, Don, for helping to bring them over to the Club House and putting them in their new home.

SWEETGRASS ANGELS SING LOVE SONGSThe Sweetgrass Angels brought harmony to The Cypress, three-part harmony that is. The Angels entertained us with Love Songs from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. They even did a rendition of the Boogie, Woogie, Bugle Boy. The Food and Beverage outdid themselves with delicious, chocolatey des-serts to please even the biggest sweet-tooth among us.

JOKES OF THE MONTHSubmitted by Joan Dallos

GREAT ONE-LINERS!I just got back from a pleasure trip. I took my mother-in-law to the airport.I‘ve been in love with the same man for 49 years. If my hus-band ever finds out, he‘ll kill me!What are three words a woman never wants to hear when she‘s making love? „Honey, I‘m home!“The Doctor gave a man six months to live. The man couldn‘t pay his bill so the doctor gave him another six months. The Doctor called Mr. Brown saying, „Mr. Brown, your check came back. „ Mr. Brown answered, „So did my arthritis!“Doctor: „You‘ll live to be 60!“ Patient: „I am 60!“ Doctor: „See! What did I tell you?“A drunk was in front of a judge. The judge says, „You‘ve been brought here for drinking.“ The drunk says „Okay, let‘s get started.“

THE CYPRESS DISPLAY CASE

SCULPTURES BY PETER DALLOS

Peter Dallos was the John Evans Professor of Neuroscience at Northwestern University until his retirement in 2012. He began making welded steel sculpture in

1998 and has been a professional sculptor since his retirement. He has participated in numerous jur-ied group shows and has had solo shows in Chicago and New York. He has work in the permanent collections of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washing-ton DC and the Weizmann Art Museum in Minneapolis.Peter’s primary interest is po-litical art. Much of the work is based on conflicts, principally depicting the struggle between western civilization and its various detractors; these can be anarchy, nihilism, or external and internal foes. The work can be interpreted from an ecological viewpoint as well, wherein the struggle is between civilization and the natural responses of a wounded and exploited earth. His vocabulary is to represent civilization by abstracted con-structs such as stylized buildings or machines and highly crafted non-representational objects. Alien plant forms stand in for reactionary forces in some pieces, or for the debased environment in others. Three examples from the Struggle Series are shown here to represent this aspect of the work. The remainder of this mini-exhibit is the latest work from 2015-16. Whimsical machines are depicted on their own, as full-fledged sculp-tural entities. See: http://www.pdallosart.com

THE INTERNET GALLERYFor its newest exhibit, the Internet Gallery continues this month with the art of three very talented, yet diverse women artists. Evelyn Kowtko’s oil paintings display vivid and realistic portraits of country sides, seascapes and Lowcountry treasures. Annie Coughlin-Harlos brings our local scenery to life with her soft use of watercolor. And, Peggy Peirce finds the humor in her abstracts both in watercolor and acrylics. Please find time to stop by the Internet Gallery and enjoy the works of our three Cypress Members.

EVELYN KOWTKOEvelyn Kowtko has painted for more than 35 years. Although she is largely self-taught, she has studied with Bernard Abelew, Marylyn Stewart, John Chickering and Nick Reale while residing in New Jersey, and the Camden School of Art of London, England. Since retiring and coming to Hilton Head, Evie has thoroughly enjoyed the many art activities available here. She has taken workshops with Charles Movalli, Charles Cruppe, Car-rie Burns Brown, Yvonne Stark, Candace Lovely, Joyce Nagel and Linda Potter, Morgan Samuel Price, Dick Ensing and Armand Cabrera.Evie shows a willingness to take risks as she paints the lovely aspects of our island “en plein aire,” interpretations of her photographs of travels, marine scenes and flowers. A loosely realistic painter in oils, she tries to impart her enthusiasm to the viewer through light and color. “Painting has opened my eyes to the previously unnoticed beauty of nature. It is a lifelong learning process and I try to challenge myself in creative ways to become a better painter.”Evelyn belonged to the Wildwood Studio in Basking Ridge and the Somerset Art As-sociation of New Jersey for many years. She is active with the Art League of Hilton Head and the Hilton Head Plantation Artists Association. Evelyn’s painting was chosen for the All Saints Episcopal Church Garden Tour poster in 2008. In 2006, she won First in Show at the Hilton Head Plantation Art-ists Association Annual Art Show, and in 2002, she was awarded the Golden Pallette Award and was invited to participate in the Arts and Flower Festivals.Evelyn also displayed her work at the Art League of Hilton Head and she’s been ac-cepted for their Juried Shows, Low Country Artists, Les Bonnes Artistes.Evie, along with fellow artist Bobsy Simes, volunteered to paint a mural for the information kiosk in Sea Pines and she has helped support the Evening of the Arts. She recently organized a group of artists who meet weekly for social painting. Her paintings are in private collections from New England to Florida.

ANNIE COUGHLIN-HARLOSAnnie Coughlin-Harlos was born in Belgium. She moved to the United States in 1950. She studied art in college, but did not take up water-color until 1997, when she retired from teaching. She honed her skills with a variety of teachers at local national and international workshops. She studied with a diverse group of teachers including Janet Walsh, Nancy Barch, Jane Miluski and Ann Howse. Annie uses water colors to capture the beauty and unique sights of Hilton Head Island including Cohen’s Bar-bershop on Squire Pope Road. Her style is free and loose with the use of vivid colors.

PEGGY PEIRCEPeggy studied fine arts at Cornell University where she also met her architect husband. She has done some sort of painting or drawing all her life. What Peggy loves best is to find humor and transfer it to art.She also enjoys experimenting with color and different mediums. She has had two one-woman shows, has work displayed in public buildings in New York City, and she locally shows at the Pink House Gallery, but she thinks that all sounds too, too, too!

Fairy TalesSubmitted by Karen Brant

THE 8 DIMENSIONS

OF WELLNESS

MARCH: EMOTIONAL WELLNESS

Notes f rom Ca thy’s Jou rna l Emotional Health Definition (taken from an article in Holistic Psychology):

• Emotional health is defined by the degree to which you feel emotionally secure and relaxed in everyday life. An emotionally healthy person has a relaxed body, an open mind and an open heart.

• The more emotional health you have, the more self-esteem you have. This means you do not frequently react with knee jerk responses, anxiety or panic to the events that occur in your life.

• Instead, you are usually calm and patient with yourself and others. You are an emotionally safe person to be around because you feel emotionally secure.

Bla bla bla bla bla!!!!! Who fits that mold?Emotional health fluctuates moment by moment. Let’s face it, we are not perfect, radiating joy and feeling high on life every day!Probably the best definition of emotional health is being able to recognize your emo-tions, good or bad, and choose healthy ways to express the rich range of emotions that make you human.I think emotional well-being means taking responsibility, focusing on our healthy habits (I don’t need to tell you what is healthy!) to support our emotional health. So… yes it would be nice to always be relaxed and open minded and never have knee jerk responses or have anxiety or panicky emotional outbursts to the events that occur in our lives. But, guess what? Life will always get in the way and throw us a curve ball. These curve balls come in the way of anger, jealousy, sadness, grief, contentment and joy. All of these emotions are important and their experiences can help us to empathize and respond in healthy ways, interacting with others and living life to its fullest. So, take a deep breath and think of all of those emotions that flood your life on a daily basis. Ask yourself how you will handle these experiences. Are you emotionally healthy? I hope you can say: “you bet!”CathyHEALTH CARE NAVIGATOR
