Greetings! I hope everyone is well. It’s hard to believe a whole month has passed already since I have written a message. Mary and I were in Nashville, TN for the TMC when I last wrote. The convention went very well considering they had the worst ice storm in five years while we were there. Temperatures dropped below 0 and it rained a lot, shutting down most of the city and the airport as well. Fortunately, the exhibitors had arrived before the bad weather, allowing

them to carry on with the show. If you all have a chance sometime to participate in this event I would highly recommend it. This is where all the newest and most advanced trucking technology comes together under one roof and they do a grand job at it. There were hundreds of exhibitors on hand with some amazing displays. Just for example, they have drivetrain components that have half glass housings so that you can actually watch the gears and the intricacies of the engines and gear boxes working. Amazing stuff!

This is the last week for the 2015 Legislative Session. I’m sure most of you have been reading Myron’s weekly updates. For SDTA all is going well so far. I am anxiously waiting for the outcome of the Highway Funding Bill. Stay tuned - we should know soon.

I would like to touch on the issue of driver shortages. Statistics state that currently we are short about 35,000 drivers across the country. They also say that by 2022, we will be short 250,000 drivers. We all know there are a variety of reasons for the shortage: driver health, CSA, along with the five basics, a reduction in miles, etc. The lagging economy that began in 2008 has caused us to lose drivers. Workers who moved on to other occupations are not returning to the industry even now when there is a demand for them. All said, I believe we have lost a large percentage of what I call our good old mossy-back truck drivers. My concern is that even though last year our industry hit an all-time low accident rate, in the future it’s likely we are going to see that rate increase again because of the experience we have lost with these drivers leaving the industry. Our new wave of drivers may qualify on paper for the job you expect them to do, but do they have the driving experience to make our public roads as safe as they have been? I go through this daily in my own company. We are short drivers. When we recruit we have many applications that come in where it appears the applicant is qualified so we go through the process of hiring. The ap-plicant has at least two years of experience, is at least 25 years old, has PSP scores that look good and has a clean MVR. They have references that appear to be OK (we are limited to the information we can gather) and they seem like a good match to the job description we are filling. The scary part comes when I conduct the driving test. I have had several applicants who could not shift a manual transmission - some of them coming to a complete stop in the middle of a busy public road. Others did not know even 25% of the items on the list when asked to do a pre-trip inspection. Some struggled backing up to a trailer to hook it up much less back the trailer into a dock

Well, we made it though another South Dakota Legislative Session. As I write this message, the House and Senate are still at impasse regarding the highway funding bill. It appears to me that the main parts we will end up with are a small fuel tax increase coupled with small license plate increases for non-commercial vehicles and a 1% increase in excise tax on the purchase of vehicles. There are also some additional items that are quite small in their effect on taxpayers.

In summary, I feel the 90th Session of the South Dakota Legislature was a success for the trucking

industry in this state. Yes, we will be impacted by the excise tax increase when we trade or buy new equipment and we will be impacted by the incremental increases in fuel tax. However, commercial vehicles were the only group excluded from license plate fee increases. That in itself is a significant success.

It will be nice to return home to Sioux Falls and return to my routine. I will be back in my office starting on Monday, March 16th. I am sure it will take some time to get through the piles of paper that have accumulated on my desk since the 12th of January!

The next big event for the SDTA is our annual Call on Washington. The SDTA contingency of 12 will be traveling to our nation's Capitol to meet with the American Trucking Asso-ciations and South Dakota's Congressional Delegation. There are numerous issues that face this industry. We have always had a great working relationship with our congres-sional delegation and the ATA. We hope to carry your concerns to DC and make everyone aware of how onerous rules and laws hinder the trucking industry. If you would like to discuss any of your concerns with someone before we travel to DC, please call your Chairman, Mr. Mike Habeck or give me a call.

The SDTA's Safety Management Council is still taking applications from potential partic-ipants in the SDTA Truck Driving Championships scheduled for May 16th in Sioux Falls. If you have never attended as a spectator, please consider attending. If you, as a driver or as a company official never had a driver participate in this event, please consider getting involved this year. I have been involved in the SDTA's Truck Driving Champion-ships since 1987 and I am still in awe when I see what these professional drivers are able to do on a pre-set obstacle course.

I am glad the weather has finally turned better. It was a rather different winter with a great deal of snow in some parts of the state while other areas had very little snow. However, we can all agree that it was an extremely cold winter. Oh well, now it is time to think Spring!

Stay safe! Until next month . . .

The 2015 South Dakota Legislative Session is in its final weeks and I know Myron has to be ready to spend a little more time at home. Highway funding still seems to be a hot topic. At this time we are a little uncertain as to what will happen to that bill and the $1.5 million dollar appropria-tion for pine beetle suppression.

April 1st is the deadline to have your survey packets filled out and returned. Please get them filled out!

We need your Log Haulers Seminar registration form (see below) by March 30th so we can final-ize the plans. Don’t forget to encourage others to attend; these issues have an effect on all log haulers.

Please keep these members in your thoughts and prayers ~ Lloyd Wheeler has been laid up for over a month now with what started out as back problems but has since escalated and Jim Henrichsen who fell down the steps coming from his shop requiring surgery on one leg and a second surgery on the foot of the other leg.

This is the second year that I will be part of a group traveling to DC to visit with our congressional delegates. Some of the issues we will be addressing are liability insurance limits, hours of service, highway funding, federal excise tax, CSA issues and states collecting business tax from interstate carriers. None of us that were required to pay the South Dakota 4 percent sales tax on intrastate transportation will forget how expensive that was. We will meet with ATA officials at the American Trucking Association Capitol Hill Office on Tuesday April 21st along with two other States and will visit with our individual delegates on Wednesday April 22nd.

Until next month ~

RUSSELL “SPEEDY” WENDt

MARCH 2015 DRIVER OF THE MONTH

Mr. Wendt has logged over 3.5 million accident-free miles in his 26+ years as a professional truck driver. The last 3 1/2 years have been spent driving for Stan’s, Inc.

His nickname “Speedy” is due to the fact that he is constantly pushing forward and doesn’t like to just stand around and wait.

Speedy’s pre-trip inspections are among the most thor-ough because he believes the equipment must be in top shape to be reliable. It gives him a chance to practice for the Truck Driving Championships daily. He has competed at the state level for two years and has gone to national competition once, using his experience to improve and learn from others.

He loves to exchange ideas that work for him and learn what has helped others do thier job better. His attitude of “being better today than yesterday” and “always of-fering a helping hand” helps inspire those around him.

Speedy and his wife Valerie are the parents of one son and two grandchildren. They reside in Lennox, SD.

SDTA joins the Safety Management Council in congrat-ulating Speedy Wendt for being selected as the March 2015 Driver of the Month.

SDTA has a new award that will be introduced at the 2015 SDTA Annual Convention.

This Milestone Award is for SDTA members and employees who have accumulated 25 or more years in the trucking industry.

The time acquired in the industry does not have to be with the current member, but the employee must work for a SDTA member at the time of recognition.

Time in the industry is all inclusive -- whether logged as a truck driver, in dispatcher, as a bookkeeper, insurance, etc.

NOTE: All accumulated time worked in the trucking industry counts!

Please take the time to complete the form enclosed on page 23 and return it to the SDTA office.

or parking space. I could go on and on with the experiences I have had with that alone. My point is, these folks have been through driv-ing school and have already been driving for someone for a couple of years. I wonder how they have avoided having

an accident already. The problem is we need drivers and there is a shortage of qualified, professional people. How do we fix it? Everyone talks about how we are going to have to pay more to attract drivers. Will that make them safer? I don’t think so. We have problems folks!! Let’s all work together to solve these issues before the government steps in to do it for us. Hat’s off to all you single truck owner operators. You have your seat filled with a good qualified, professional, experienced driver.

Remember our goal for 2015 is 600 members. Get out and sign someone up.

Please thank Myron when you see him for all he does dur-ing the Legislative Session. I would also like to thank all the associate members for their support in our associa-tion.

Until next time, just remember “It’s just another day in paradise.” Thank you and God Bless!

Peterbilt Motors Company officials recently recognized Midwest Peter-bilt Group/SCTS with several national growth and performance awards for 2014 efforts.

Peterbilt of Sioux City received a “Best in Class Dealer of the Year” Award, noting outstanding improvement in heavy truck sales.

In addition, the Parts and Service De-partments were recognized for high productivity, for receiving high cus-tomer satisfaction index scores and for achieving a high customer call center response rate.

This was the second time Sioux City has received this top international award from Peterbilt Motors, having previously won the translucent glass trophy in 2007.

In addition, Sioux City and Peterbilt of Norfolk were each given a Platinum

10 tips to stay healthy on the roadBy Alyssa Sorenson, Profile Dietitian

For most truck drivers, a typical day consists of fast food meals, convenience store snacks and a lot of time sitting. Staying ahead of your health behind the wheel can be a real challenge. But with a few simple chang-es, you can maintain a healthy eating and exercise plan to boost your energy, no matter how long you’re on the road.

1. Get in the right mindset. Identify what behaviors you need to change in order to get or stay healthy. Once you find a positive mindset for positive changes, they’ll be easier to sustain.

2. take baby steps. Small changes are easier to stick with and, over time, can have a significant impact on your health. For example, slowly reduce the amount you eat by cutting portion sizes, or switch from white bread to 100 percent whole wheat to reap the benefits of increased fiber in your diet.

3. Plan ahead. Pack healthy snacks such as beef jerky, nuts, carrots sticks and celery, whole fruits like bananas and apples, or ready-to-drink protein shakes and bars. Having these types of snacks on hand can help you avoid unhealthy convenience store choices.

4. Avoid the unknown. If you know the towns you plan to stop in ahead of time, you may be able to plan a stop at a healthier restaurant instead of relying on the same fast-food joints.

5. eat frequent, small meals. Eating every two to three hours can curb hunger, along with the urge to make bad eating decisions on impulse.

6. don’t drink your calories. Calories from soft drinks, sweetened teas, sports drinks and even juice can add up and easily put you over your caloric needs for the day. The calories from these beverages do little to curb your appetite, and an extra 100 calories per day can contribute to 10 pounds of weight gain annu-ally.

7. Make grocery stores your no. 1 stop. More and more grocery stores are offering healthy, convenient meals and snacks. A few items you can choose from: pre-washed bags of lettuce or spinach, pre-washed and cut vegetables and fruit, and pre-cut and cooked meats.

8. Allow time for exercise. Schedule exercise in small increments. While parked at the truck stop, walk around the parking lot or around your truck a few times. Use an activity tracker to monitor how many steps you get in a day, and pack free weights to lift when you can.

9. write it down. Take a few minutes after your drive to write down what you ate throughout the day. Journ-aling is a great tool for managing a healthy weight.

10. Get some z’s. Lack of sleep has been connected to poor food choices. Getting adequate sleep helps you stay focused, feel rested and contributes to building a healthy immune system.

IMPROVING THE HUMAN CONDITION

Living a healthier life can not only extend your life, it can improve the quality. Feeling physi-cally better and having control over your own life can greatly increase your mental health as well. Physical fitness has always been a com-ponent of the Highway Patrol and in fact, state troopers are required to take our physical train-ing test two times per year. The physical train-ing test consists of push ups, sit ups, vertical leap, a 300 meter sprint and a 1.5 mile run. If most troopers are like me, they are counting down their remaining PT tests until retirement.

Keeping in mind the benefits of being physically fit, we implemented our first "Colonel's Fitness Challenge" in 2014. The fitness challenge is a ten week voluntary program for all members of the Highway Patrol, both sworn and nonsworn. Since everyone's fitness level and activities they like to do are different, the challenge was designed to accommodate everyone who wanted to join in. In total, 95 Highway Patrol employees invested an estimated 3,155 hours into improving their personal health and fitness in only ten weeks.

Based on the first-time participation and the feedback we have received, the program was a success. The challenge was a motivating fac-tor for many people to get out and be active, when in many circumstances they might have chosen to do something else. Many employ-ees participated in different organized fitness events including 5Ks, 10Ks, mud runs, half marathons, marathons and "Biggest Loser" competitions during the ten week period.

All participants who completed the challenge re-ceived a Colonel’s Fitness Challenge t-shirt and the top performers in each category received a plaque and a Colonel's Challenge coin. I owe a huge thanks to Lieutenant Caleb Walters and Captain Alan Welsh for developing and manag-ing the fitness challenge.

Also, the prizes wouldn't have been possible without the donations from Sanford Health, the South Dakota Trucking Association and the South Dakota Auto Dealers Association. You are good partners and your contributions are appre-ciated. Thank you!

The overall miles and hours completed in this year's challenge were very impressive!
