Brothers, As I write this, one Fish Fry has been held, and what a success it was! Much busier than expected, particularly since the first one of the season is usually a bit on the slow side. If this is any indication for the rest, we will be having quite a crowd over the next few weeks. One problem we have is that some of our Brother Knights are away at this time of year. This means that we need more help; we need to bring in the troops! If you have never helped at Fish Fry, you might feel uncomfortable about stepping in; after all, at this point you have no idea how or what to do. But relax: this is no problem at all. All you have to do is show up, and you will quickly be given a job, complete with any necessary instructions. So why should you come to help? Two reasons: 1. As stated above, help is needed for this very worthwhile project; 2. You will be glad you did. As you have probably heard before, Mother Teresa firmly believed that when a person helps others, it is the giver who benefits most. How true this is! The satisfaction of knowing that one has helped someone---that one has done something useful---is indeed very rewarding. And, on top of that, we have a bonus: a crew of hard-working Brother Knights who make it easy to join in, who do the various jobs well, and who make it all fun. There is a great sense of camaraderie and cooperation. It is fun to be there; it is great to be part of the crew. It is no coincidence that many of the Fish Fry crew have been doing this for years: the satisfaction from being part of the team---and the knowledge of the importance of this event --- keep them coming back. If you have been to the Fish Fry as a customer, you know how much it is enjoyed by those who come. You have seen, experienced, and enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Now take the next step and help create the event. If you have never been to the Fish Fry, it is time to get in the game. Join us as we work together, serve others, and continue to be a source of fellowship for the parish and the community. FR. SHYSHKOWICH COUNCIL #8925 ACTING GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE Grand Knight Br. CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE Fr. Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R

Dear Brother Knights,

At the moment I am in Toronto preaching a Parish Mission in

my former parish of Holy Eucharist and this is good! Before I

became your pastor and chaplain in 2008, I was a full-time

missionary or a 'man-one revival team'. I preached in every

Ukrainian parish in Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand back in

2005, and then proceeded to preach some 50 missions all over

United States and Canada. Just when I had developed a clientele

(of Ukrainian parishes for Missions) and I had worked hard to

accomplish this, I was asked by Father Larry to please put aside my Missions and return as

Pastor of St. Joseph's. So in these past few years, I have not been able to share the Word of

God much beyond our parish. And it has been good, very good to be your shepherd and

chaplain!

Ah! But finally I could return to my former parish to preach a Mission and to renew

acquaintances and friendships. Would you believe they still remember me after 15 years – and

even fondly at that? Am slightly busy here so forgive me for not thinking of you very often! I

will return!

I will have missed two Friday Fish Frys but truly believe they are more than successful. I

thoroughly enjoy watching how smoothly and harmoniously how so many men (and ladies

too!) great this annual Lenten event. Very proud of you all!

Whoops! Hopefully I am still under the wire and you receive this short note in time for the

bulletin!

God bless you all and have a happy Lent!

Chaplain Father Bohdan

2015 Super Bowl Sports Raffle

Super Bowl XLIX (49) was played on February 01, 2015 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glen-dale, Arizona between the AFC - New England Patriots, NFC - Seattle Seahawks. The AFC - New England Patriots won the game in the final minute by preventing a touchdown from the 1 yard line by the Seahawks with a Patriots interception.

From one series of 900 pool tickets 898 ticket stubs were sold & returned, 2 were lost generating Gross Revenues of $4,490.00.

To all who sold and purchased tickets, thank you so very much for your support. I would also like to personally thank and extend the council’s thanks to Br. Don Gulchak & Br. Mike Samec for all their hard work in selling, distributing, and collecting tickets.

All scores were verified, the winners have been contacted or their information was confirmed and 22 prizes worth $2,350.00 were paid out by cheque via Canada Post on Feb 03. A list of scores and prize winners is published elsewhere in the Bulletin.

Projected Expenses are $2,601.96 (including prizes) with an expected Profit of $1,888.04 which will be turned over to the Council charitable fund. Fraternally, Br. J. Larry Trach, Raffle Chair.

Dear Brother Knights, I was at the first FISH FRY of this Lenten season and was pleased

with the attendance and impressed with the number of Brothers that

were working at this very important event. The speed and effi-

ciency with which the event was run was amazing however, it was

obvious as the evening went on, that our Br. Knights were being

“run – off – their – feet”. As our WGK Br. Dennis wrote in this

month’s message, your help is needed. The first of this year’s YOUTH WINTER GAMES, the bowling

event, took place on January 24th and was well attended and enjoyed by all, including a number of our

Knights and their families. Many volunteer hours are spent on our various events but unfortunately not all are accounted for.

Brothers, we must keep track and report all volunteer hours so that we can report a true picture of our

Council’s activity to state. You can report those hours through E-MAIL, an electronic copy is at-

tached to the email, or by hard copy which is included with the mail out copies of the Bulletin or you

may report your volunteer hours verbally to any of the executive.

GOD bless those who give so generously of their time. Michael Kiernicki

Daily Encounter is a Week-day Devotional by Richard (Dick) Innes of ACTS International

As an update on our 1st Fish FRY of this year, we

served a total of 235 meals which exceeded last

year’s 185 meals served (this includes all the meal

selections available) - Hopefully this trend contin-

ues. We had 27 of our Brother Knights volunteer-

ing and hope to have more volunteers at the re-

maining dates especially for the evening service

and clean-up shift.

Brother Knights, please phone me at 204-338-

0501, to let me know when you are available.

Br. Ed Ozubko,

Have You Insured Your Most Valuable Asset?

Is your income protected if you become sick or injured and cannot work? Your ability to work and earn an income is your most valuable asset. Yet a disability could prevent you from earning that income. Just one year of a disability could eliminate your savings.

Income Armor, an individual disability income insurance product from the Knights of Columbus, should be a key part of your overall financial plan and family’s protection.

If you are ill or injured, Income Armor provides tax-free monthly benefits to help you meet living expenses and maintain you and your family’s standard of living. Your monthly benefits help you pay your mortgage and other monthly bills, while your savings and retirement assets remain intact.

In short, if you have a job and don’t have a way to protect that paycheck, you should seriously consider Income Ar-mor today. I look forward to meeting with you.

Communicating Christ

"He [Jesus] looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to

the man [with the withered hand], 'Stretch out your

hand.' He stretched it out, and his hand was com-pletely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and

began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus."1

Because Jesus healed this man on the Sabbath (the

formal religious day of the religious leaders), they were furious with him and planned to kill him.

A major fault of these religious leaders was that they loved their man-made rules and doctrines

more than they loved people! Furthermore, they used these rules to control people. Instead of com-

municating God's love and mercy, they communi-cated their rigid religiosity and drove people from

God rather than draw them to Him.

While correct teaching is important, "Christianity is

much more than a creed. It is experiencing divine love, divine acceptance, and divine forgiveness and

communicating these to every life we touch."

St. Francis had it right in his prayer:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light, and

Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much

Seek to be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand;

To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please make me an in-strument to share Your love, joy and peace wherever I

go and to every life I touch. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully in Jesus's name,

amen."

“Strength, Integrity, Fidelity”

Brothers, on February 18th we entered the Lenten season with

Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the

Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting

which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday,

through which we attain redemption. The ashes that we received

on Ash Wednesday remind us of our own sinfulness. The Lenten

season is the spiritual equivalent of an annual physical exam; it’s

a time to take stock of our lives, our hearts. I hope many of our councils are participating in the “40 cans for

Lent” program. This is an excellent manner to encourage our

brother knights and our parishioners to donate one can of food

per day during Lent. The food collected can be donated to your

local food bank, Winnipeg Harvest or a food kitchen of your

choice. See information included with this month’s mailing. During March all councils are asked to hold Church Drives. Have

you ordered materials? Please follow the information contained in

“Guide to Recruiting Success – Conducting a Membership Drive”

which all Grand Knights received in the mail. Recruiting new

members is essential to the continued growth and well-being of

your council and the order. Offering a man membership in the

Knights of Columbus gives him the opportunity to improve his

own life and his community. Membership allows him to experi-

ence the fraternal bond that knights share while growing closer to

his family and faith. Membership and recruitment continue to be

an important priority for all the councils. Some councils are hav-

ing difficulty filling the executive positions. We require new

members willing to fill these positions. Deaths and suspensions continue to reduce our ranks, which is

why we have to continue being vigilant with our retention efforts.

Grand Knights it is important that you keep in close contact with

all of your members so that you are aware when they are in need

of your support. We have to impress upon our members their im-

portance in belonging to the Knights. We are “the right hand of

the Church” and the Church needs us now more than ever. On March 29th we will be celebrating 133 years since the found-

ing of our Order by Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney. If not

already a member of the Father McGivney Guild I encourage you

to become one today! All you have to do is register at: http://

www.fathermcgivney.org/mcg/en/contact/register.html. The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for

information about the life, works and spirituality of Father

McGivney. The Guild distributes informational materials about

him, receives reports of favors granted through his intercession

and oversees the distribution of relics. Guild members receive

regular updates on the progress of Father McGivney's cause for

canonization and are invited to participate in promoting devotion

to this Servant of God. Members of the Knights of Columbus are

not automatically Guild members and must elect to join the

Guild. The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild Newsletter is pub-

lished bimonthly except July- August, and is sent free to Guild

members. There is no charge to belong to the Father McGivney

Guild and anyone can join! Benefits of Guild Membership:

* Weekly Guild Masses- Each week a Mass is celebrated by Fa-

ther Gabriel B. O’Donnell, vice-postulator of the cause for Father

McGivney, for the intentions of members of the Father McGiv-

ney Guild. * All Souls Novena of Masses- Between Oct. 24th

Nov. 2nd Father O’Donnell celebrates Mass for all deceased rela-

tives and friends of Guild Members. * Novena for World Peace- During the nine days preceding the

feast of the Sacred Heart, the Guild celebrates daily Mass in

Rome for the cause of world peace. * Christmas and Easter Triduum Masses- Petitions from Guild

members are placed on the altar for Masses celebrated in Rome at

Easter and Christmas. The cause for the canonization of our founder Venerable Fr. Mi-

chael J. McGivney is ongoing. I ask that all continue to pray for

his canonization. Upcoming &/or ongoing events which Councils should sup-

port:

2015 Manitoba State Curling Bonspiel – April 10th, 11 & 12.

ICCD Major Draw- April 18th.

The Silver Rose Program April 26th to May 17th - we ask

that councils hold a mass or prayer service in their parish.

Manitoba State Convention May 1, 2, & 3rd at the Victoria

Inn. At the Convention the Delegates elect the MB State

Board Members as well as electing a delegate to the Supreme

Convention in Orlando in August. If interested in putting

your name forward for any of these positions, please do not

hesitate. Ask your Grand Knight for information.

Culture of Life March Thursday, May 14th. It begins with a

Mass at 11 am at St. Mary’s Cathedral and the March starts

at 12 Noon at the Legislative Steps. Promote this walk in

your parishes and encourage all your members and parishion-

ers to participate in large numbers.

May 11th - Gospel of Life Mass will be held in the Winnipeg

Diocese. Archbishop Richard Gagnon will be the celebrant.

More Information to follow. Encourage all your members

and parishioners to attend.
