STUDENT CORNER NEW
FEATURE!
We would like to introduce a new section that will begin appearing in the monthly TRiO FESP Newsletter. The purpose of this section will be to provide a student perspective with information about classes, professors, clubs, and experiences throughout Western Michigan University’s campus. If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions that you would like featured, please submit your topics to: [email protected] We hope to provide further insight for your benefit during your time at Western Michigan University.
This new section of our newsletter needs a name! We are referring to it as our “Student Corner” but are requesting that students submit
ideas for consideration.
Please provide ideas to:
Katrina Goodall
TRiO FESP is full of students who are knowledgeable, informed, engaging, fun, accomplished, friendly, resourceful and so many more things!
We encourage you to remain active in our TRiO FESP events and to interact with your TRiO FESP peers. Please keep us informed of accomplishments and let us
know of any suggestions you have for workshop topics, and program services and activities. Thank you for being excellent role models.
RESUME BUILDING ACTIVITIES
Today’s job market is competitive and one question we are routinely asked is: “Will I be able to get a job teaching ____________________?” Although jobs cannot be guaranteed for anyone, we can provide activities and opportunities that will allow our students to learn and practice their craft, network with local educators, earn references and gain experience working with youth. All of the above are “RESUME BUILDERS” So if you want to be a standout candidate for a teaching position, we encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities frequently!
TRiO FESP Campus Opportunity
TRiO FESP is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant cycle is a 5 year cycle. August 2015 marks the end of our first grant cycle and we are anticipating the beginning of another 5 year cycle in September 2015. With new beginnings, come new opportunities to expand. We are seeking 8-10 TRiO FESP Juniors and Seniors who are willing to do a panel presentation to our TRiO FESP FYE freshman in September 2015. We will likely have two FYE sections and the panelists will need to be available to present one time in September in each class. TRiO FESP staff will assist with preparation and panel discussion questions regarding your successful transition and adjustment to WMU.
What is in it for you? Opportunity to practice public speaking in a
classroom setting Opportunity to share your experiences and
help others TRiO “swag bag” Priority registration workshop waived Our sincere appreciation
Community Opportunity
TRiO FESP is partnering with the Kalamazoo Nature Center to “bring the classroom outdoors!” The KNC has created a program that allows local classrooms from different school districts to mix and mingle with one another and nature while completing grade level content expectations.
This initiative is fulfilling the theme of “Healthy Minds, Bodies and Communities” and we are excited about the opportunity for TRiO FESP students to be involved. Our students will assist local teachers and the KNC staff with two interactive half days of programming, one in May at the WMU Asylum Lake Preserve and the other in June at the KNC.
Our students will be able to assist youth, observe veteran educators, participate in the activities and follow-up lessons, and earn a reference!
Other year round volunteer opportunities are also available at the KNC.
If you are interested in either opportunity, please inform M’Myia,
Katrina or Marcy. We will also be participating in all of the events so
we will be there to assist you.
Training and on-going support for all opportunities will always be
available.
Summer Employment
Now is the time to start seeking and in some cases, securing summer positions working with youth. Many summer camps and youth serving agencies are starting
their campaigns seeking employees for summer positions.
The time youth spend in programming that occurs outside of school hours is often referred to as the “Second Shift.” This is a great opportunity to learn kid behaviors, noises,
moods, etc. and begin to be introduced to the role of being a leader to groups of children.
This is also another “RESUME BUILDER”
