Morzine, France Trip Report by Sam Fontaine

The last European trips have covered three of the four major Alpine countries, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. Now it’s France’s turn. We settled on Morzine, which is part of the Portes du Soleil region of 12 interconnected resorts. It actually stretches into Switzerland, so maybe it’s double counting. We had a total of 77 people on this trip including folks from Tampa, Phoenix, Minneapolis, and the Weber’s actually drove from their house in Northwest France. Swiss Air took us comfortably from Chicago to Zurich, Switzerland where we changed to our flight to Geneva. On the landing approach, we could see our final destination clearly out the left side of the plane, the Portes du Soleil and the peaks of the Dents du Midi. After landing and getting our passports stamped, we picked up our luggage off the belt. Oops, 4 people are missing a bag so they will have to fill out some paper work. We exit out the door marked “Nothing to Declare” and into: A MADHOUSE! Geneva, Switzerland is not that big a town. I think Milwaukee is bigger. As such, its airport is a rather compact facility sandwiched between the railroad tracks and the French border. But 14 Saturdays a year it is the destination of hoards of skiers from all over the world. This gateway to the French and Western Swiss Alps is bedlam inside of a zoo. Dozens of taxi, van, limo, and bus drivers are holding up their group signs to locate their charges. Crowds pushing luggage carts heaped with bags and skis mill about running into each other, over people’s toes, knocking over other stacks of skis parked against the walls and support columns of the arrival hall. We found a relatively open area to gather the group while I locate our buses outside. Here, there are about 30 buses parked at various spots. With 75 bodies on the ground, we had 2 buses lined up, but as luck would have it they are parked on opposite ends of the airport. We direct everyone out to the buses and spend about half an hour moving back and forth through the crowds because one bus has lots of luggage space, but not many seats, the other lots of seats, but not much luggage space. People get on and off looking for partners on the other bus. Civil-ians keep trying to board the bus thinking it’s going to Megeve, or St Gervais, or Chamonix. The people with the lost bags are still in the “secure” area filling out paper work. I pick up the phone and they buzz me in to find them finishing up. We exit, get on the bus and do about 10 head counts as Deb B took one bus and I took the other. We’d then get to together and review our counts. Finally, after threatening sudden death to anyone who got off the bus, we determined the count was good and off we went about an hour late. It’s only about an hour and a half to Morzine as half the distance is on the turnpike, then over 2 passes down to Morzine and our hotel, the Le Cret, so now we are almost back on schedule. Another 20 min-utes of pandemonium while everyone gets their bags, room keys and up the small elevator to their rooms and then we’re off to locate the ski shops where we rented skis. The walk into the center of town is about fifteen minutes and just a very gentle incline. After skis are rented, we are informed we can keep them there as well as our boots for the week, very convenient as they are right by the lift stations. Then it’s back to the hotel for our welcome party. With everyone gathered in the lounge, the Hotel Le Cret assistant manager, Alex, gave us a rundown of the hotels facilities and activities: 2 indoor pools, hot tub, sauna, and lower level theater with nightly shows. He reminded us that tonight was the magic show in which he would be the star performer. “Are you going to pull a rabbit out of your hat?” I asked. “An Elephant!” he replied. With that we handed out our lift passes, which is an RFI chip card that activates the turnstiles at each lift. We had our own area in the dining room for seating, and the Maitrix d’, Coreen, explained how it would work: help yourself to the huge buffet of salads, cold cuts, pates, cheeses, breads, soup. There would be a table service of a main course prepared nightly, or, we could eat from the steam table buffet, tonight it was burgers and fries. We took the plate dinner, followed by the dessert buffet. Coreen was in charge of keeping us Yanks in line because, being from Vancouver, BC, they figured she was an expert. The down stairs theater was quite spacious, it could easily hold 300. The magic show was surprisingly professional and it was now apparent that they had whole team of entertainers. Alex was the big boss, assisted by four young multitalented kids: Frank, Romain, Stephanie, and Agathe. But I still did not see him pull an elephant out of his hat. With an enthusiastic audience, the show was a lot of fun.OK, now this is a ski trip, not a cruise ship. Time to get out on the snow. There are two main lift stations in Morzine, the Pleney gondola going up the mountain on the same side of the river as the hotel, and the Super Morzine gondola that crosses the river and up to more lifts heading to Avoriaz. There is also a free bus to the Avoriaz cable car. More about Avoriaz later. Sunday we catch the Pleney lift and head toward Les Gets (pronounced “lay jay” I think. In French, you never know.) The runs are groomed, but it has been several days since the last snowfall, so they are fairly hard packed, (think Indianhead on a decent day). Around 2 pm, it starts snowing. That is a good sign.

(Morsine Cintinued)

Overnight we had 4 inches of snow with up to 10 inches on the upper slopes. Monday was a late start, and you snooze, you lose. By 11, everything was chopped up and we had the piles of loose snow surrounded by ice. I headed up Super Morzine toward Avoriaz. It was sunny and warm and the jacket liner got immediately stashed in the back pack. Two more express chairs and I was skiing through the purpose-built town of Avoriaz. Until 1968, this was just a barren plateau between two mountains. In that year, local legend, Jean Vuarnet, began developing it as a ski resort full of high rise condos and hotels. Even though some are 20 stories high, the cedar siding make them blend into the surrounding cliffs. No cars, the only way to get around is on skis with lifts running through town. From there, I skied down the opposite valley and then up to a little Swiss flag that indicates “You are now in Switzerland”. After lunch overlooking the Dents du Midi, it was time to ski back to Morzine.

Tuesday we had a group lunch was scheduled at “Chez Flo”, a slope side restaurant in Avoriaz. It was located by the top of the Avoriaz cable car so that nonskiers could get there easily. After skiing the area around Avoriaz, we all met there at 1 o’clock for a lunch of very generous portions, wine, and finish of local grappa. With very full bellies, we decided to call it a day and ski down under the cable car and meet everyone at the base and took the bus back to Morzine. After stashing skis and boots at the ski shop, we gather at what is now our usual après-ski spot, “La Remise”. David, the chef at “Chez Flo”, told us there was a great band at “The Cavern”, which was conveniently located downstairs. So at 5 we go downstairs to a packed bar with the best band I’ve heard in a long, long time. Cab Collective is a loose amalgam of Scottish and French snow boarders, but an extremely tight band musically. Back home for dinner and then the dance contest. It’s not about who is the best dancer but who can guess which three dance genres will get the most couples on the dance floor.

Wednesday turned out to be the best skiing of the week. The snow was now nicely consolidated, and the relatively warm temperature made for delightful spring like conditions that never got slushy late in the day. We decided to check out the Mont Chery area across the road from Les Gets. When we got there, we found that we had the whole mountain to ourselves, none of the normal crowds. So we spent several hours ripping up the slopes before heading back toward Morzine.

On Thursday, the dropping temperature turned all the runs to solid ice. Lots of people decided to make the journey to Switzerland. It was on the way that Deb Matz fell and had to be tobogganed down by the ski patrol. At the medical clinic, X-rays showed a fractured pelvis and she had to be transported back to the hotel by ambulance. Fortunately, we had about ten nurses on the trip, so Deb had plenty of assistance once back to Morzine. The hotel managed to make a room available on the ground floor where she was as comfortable as could be expected. Thursday night was the gala dinner night in the downstairs theater. This was a semi formal affair with plated courses, candle light, bottle wine on the tables, and even a singer providing dinner music. After dinner, the entertainment crew put on a one hour show which I could only describe as lip-syncing dance review. After checking that Deb was comfortable and fed, we turned in.

Friday was something I have never experienced before in the Alps, rain! It went all day, letting up just long enough to sucker you into thinking you could ski, only to start up again as strong as ever. This was a sign to us that we were taking the day off. After 5 days straight, most of us were getting a little whooped anyway. Senny Wegner was not going to let a little moisture stand the way of skiing, so he ventured out into the elements. He did not get the annual Gelandesprung Ski Trash award three years in a row for nothing! He reported that “The snow was pretty good, really!” The only others we saw skiing were our British cousins, who never let a little rain dampen their plans. We saw them at the end of the day at the après-ski bars wrapped in blankets drying their gloves by the space heaters. I spent the afternoon investigating ways to get our wounded Deb home. But with work from our nursing staff, by the end of the day she could sit up, move around, and she reported “I’m ready for Paris!” That was very good news indeed. We don’t like leaving anyone behind.

That night we had our farewell party. After the going over the departure procedures, it was time for the Lunar Awards. We had lots of nominations this trip, too many to detail all. One person decided to see how far you could go on the bus system and ended up in Switzerland when they shut down. Fortu-nately, the Swiss take pity on hapless foreigners, and after getting his mom to make him some dinner, drove the wandering stranger 20 miles back to our hotel. It was Judy Dreier who captured the coveted prize when one of her ski buddies suggested that the reason she was taking in inordinate number of falls was that she obviously had her ski boots on the wrong feet. Tomorrow, it’s on to Paris! Stay tuned for next month’s conclusion.

Marquette Mt. Ski Tripby Trip Leader, Dar Kramer

The Marquette Ski trip has been one of the best weekend trips that the Sly Foxes have had over the years and this year was no different. We had great snow and plenty of sun-shine. The trip would have not been as much fun without the wonderful and helpful skiers on board. Right from the time the bus arrived, everyone chipped in with loading coolers, unloading skis and bags, running Nastar, setting up a wine and cheese party… to arriving on time every time we moved. A BIG thank you to all of you! As we arrived at our hotel this year, we discovered the club’s name had been changed to the Fly Fox Ski Club. They thought we would fl y down the hills and that we did on Sunday during the Nastar Races. We had several medals won and everyone fi nished the course safely. Thanks Jim for taking care of this event.

We did make it downtown Saturday night thanks to Al, our trusty and talented driver. There was an incident with a bale of straw....but what happens in Marquette, stays in Marquette. Please keep this trip in mind for next year....it is always a great time.

Here are a few of our ski buddies in action.
