We hadn’t heard of Prithvi until we had an invitation tosample their menu, and now it’s cemented in our memoriesfor all the right reasons. It is a small, superb restaurant in BathRoad with simple, tasteful decor and, as one very satisfiedcustomer described it, “fine dining at its very finest”.Proprietor Jay is extremely passionate about his restaurant

and demonstrated a great pride in explaining that what wewere going to eat was authentic food that he would eat athome, but with a slight twist – unlikemany Indian restaurants that cook forthe British palette.All the staff were very friendly and

professionally trained – the servicewas impeccable. Any cutlery usedwas replaced between courses. Myhusband got up for a comfort breakand his napkin was refolded. Waterwas topped up without having to ask.The table was ‘swept’ with a rollednapkin between courses. This may allsound a bit too formal to some, but we felt completelyrelaxed throughout due to the unobtrusive manner in whichthe Prithvi team performed their service.There was a pleasant wait between courses too, making

for a thoroughly enjoyable evening – as Jay informed us,when you book a table, it’s yours for the whole night.This is not your typical Indian restaurant with the usual

chicken/lamb tikka masalas, bhunas, kormas etc. The menupresents a select variety of dishes, all freshly prepared toorder. Starters ranged from £4.90-£7.90 and mains from£7.90-£13.90, or you can choose to have the ‘Tour of

Prithvi’ which Jay recommended to us. This was fivesumptuous, beautifully presented courses starting with anAmuse Bouche followed by Chingri Puri-Tiger Prawns. Wethen savoured the Machli-Tandoor Roasted Salmon whichwe all raved about and just wanted to eat over and overagain, before moving on to the Nargil Duck (braised breastof duck with a cumin and honey crust) which just melted inyour mouth and was served with an individual pot of

coconut rice.Next up was Kadhu Lamb –

slow cooked lamb on a bed ofcinnamon roasted butternutsquash – accompanied by a nanbread. Then just when youthought you couldn’t eat anymore, a delightful plate of freshfruit and delicious home-madeice-cream with a type ofdoughnut. The ‘Tour of Prithvi’ isserved to entire tables only, but

we couldn’t recommend it strongly enough. It was heavenlyand the total quality dictates, without doubt, it is extremelygood value at £35 per person.Our daughter – who ordinarily eats Chicken Tikka Masala

when she has an Indian meal – was quite taken aback. Thefantastic flavours of the food and wonderful ambiancecreated by the friendly professionalism of Jay and hiscolleagues has left her longing to return as soon as possible.We dined mid-week, but if you want to try this exceptional

restaurant on a Friday or Saturday you will need to book wellin advance – I think that says it all really!

Make this easy no-bake treatwith the children this Easter ...

EasterRocky RoadIngredients:100g unsalted butter, softened; 225gdark chocolate, broken into smallpieces; 2tbsp golden syrup; 2tbspcocoa powder; 200g Mini Eggs; 50gmini marshmallows; 100g sultanas; 100gRich Tea biscuits, broken into small pieces.Method:1 Line a 20cm square cake tin withbaking parchment.

2 Place the butter, dark chocolate,syrup and cocoa powder in a smallglass bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water.Stir with a wooden spoon until all the ingredients aremelted and the chocolate mixture is smooth andglossy. Leave to cool for 10 minutes.

3 Place the Mini Eggs, mini marshmallows, sultanas andRich Tea biscuit pieces in a large mixing bowl. Pour overthe melted chocolate mixture and stir to combine.

4 Pour the mixture into the tin and leave to cool for 2 hours.5 Remove from the tin and cut into approximately 8-12 squares.

Delicious DishesNow the children have been sorted, time for your cake!

Easter Chocolate Fudge CakeIngredients:150g unsalted butter, at room temperature; 150g light muscovado sugar;40g cocoa powder; 150g self-raising flour; 1tsp baking powder; 1/2 tspbicarbonate of soda; 2 medium eggs; 1tsp vanilla extract; 142ml souredcream; 2tsp golden syrup. For the ganache: 250ml double cream; 250g darkchocolate. To decorate: 1 chocolate flake, crumbled; 120g mini eggs.Method:1 Heat oven to 180C, gas mark 4. Grease and line 2x18cm sandwich tins.2 Beat together the butter and sugar until pale.3 In a separate bowl, sift the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder,bicarbonate of soda and a pinch of salt; mix well. Add to the creamedbutter and sugar.

4 In a jug, whisk the eggs with the vanilla, soured cream and syrup. Pourover the dry ingredients and beat together. Divide the mixture equallybetween the tins.

5 Bake for 20-25 minutes until springy. Leave to cool for a few minutes, thentransfer to racks to cool completely.

6 For the ganache, put the cream and chocolate into abowl over barely simmering water. Heat gently

until the chocolate has melted. Remove fromthe heat and stir briefly, until combined andsmooth (don't overstir).7 Allow to cool for 1 hr, or until thick enoughto spread.8 Use slightly less than half to sandwich thecakes together. Spread remaining ganacheover the cake, then decorate with flake andmini eggs.

9 Store your cake in an airtight container in thefridge to keep it fresh for longer – if it lasts that long!

Once again it’s that time of year when hoards ofvisitors descend upon our town to enjoy thethrill of the Festival and Cheltenham becomes asea of tweed jackets, and a riot of colour.

One way to get noticed is to visit Nikki atExtreme Lengths. Nikki has 30

Nikki started by sectioning off a small piece ofhair from the mid-section, just under Morna’snatural hair. In 2009 Prinknash Bird & Deer Park introduced ‘Teal’ the ‘roll top’gypsy caravan for children’s parties of 16 or more, and has sinceadded sister caravan ‘Eider’ – the perfect place tohave a more secluded child’s party. Eider seats fourchildren and two adults with ease for the birthdaypicnic and costs just £45 including entry to the park.It took seven months to hand paint Eider anddeck out the caravan internally with delightfulfabrics to charm any child. Eider is situated in theGolden Wood, not far from the famous WendyHouse, and must surely be the most uniquevenue in England to celebrate a birthday. Frederick James Archer – one of the most celebrated jockeysof all time – was born in Cheltenham on 11th January 1857 ina small cottage originally called St Georgeʼs Cottage but nowknown as 43 St Georgeʼs Place.

His father, William, was a successful steeplechase rider,who won the Grand National in 1858. By then, he had movedwith his wife and five children to Prestbury, where his father-in-law was landlord of the ʻKings Armsʼ public house. He tookthis over in 1861 and ran it until about 1873. This is whereFred grew up and his father taught him to ride.

Fred showed a particular talent as a rider, and in 1868 hisfather apprenticed him toMatthew Dawson ofNewmarket – one of theleading trainers of theday. The following yearhe ran, but lost, his firstpublic race. From 1870onwards the number ofhis wins increasedsteadily, culminating in1874 with no less than147 wins which made himEnglandʼs ʻChampionJockeyʼ – a position hewas to retain for the restof his short life.

His reign as championjockey – which included,

in 1885, an unthinkable 246 wins – a record that was notequalled until 1933 – brought him worldwide fame. It alsobrought him the need to keep his weight under control. At over5 foot 8 inches, he was unusually tall for a jockey, and hespent much of his life on a diet, endless ʻpurgesʼ and Turkishbaths – all which took a toll on his health.

Although Archer regularly visited his family, he madeNewmarket his home, and in 1882 he built himself a housethere which he named ̒ Falmouth Houseʼ after Lord Falmouth,his principal patron. The house was completed shortly beforehis marriage in January 1883 to Dawsonʼs niece, Helen Rose,by whom he had two children – a son, who died a few hoursafter birth, and a daughter, following whose birth his wife died,aged only 23 – an event which sent Fred into a deepdepression from which he never fully recovered.

Even before his wifeʼs death he was experiencing manyproblems such as gambling and race fixing which was neverproved. He began to lose more often but continued to puthimself through punishing regimes until, in early November1886, his health gave way and he took to his bed with a chillthat turned into typhoid fever.

He had always kept a loaded revolver by his bedside asthere had been a spate of burglaries at Newmarket and atabout 2.25pm on November 8th 1886, depressed anddelirious, he shot himself.

The phrase ‘if you build it they will come’ is definitelytrue of the Old Pats Juniors at the moment. We getcalls and emails on a weekly basis from parentswanting to enrol their children and our numbers arerising all the time.The systems we have in place are working. Every age

group has a Head Coach, Assistant Head Coach, TeamManager, Qualified First Aider, Referee and numerousother Support Coaches.There are a range of people working behind the

scenes making sure that everything is catered for sothat the players can enjoy their rugby. Michele Butlerand Norman Bell provide great food, James Luxtonbooks coaching courses and sorts out the finance, DavePowell and Hugh Bower regularly check the CRBs andregistrations and Merv Jacques works wonders with hisfixtures and pitches.We are all very lucky because we are all volunteers.

Every adult involved with the Pats is ‘giving somethingback’, as they say. They do it for their children butactually commit to so much more. As Chairman of theJuniors I can’t believe the passion and commitmentthat they give and I see my role is to ensure that wehave a well-oiled machine that allows for rugbydevelopment of all our players.

March in Gloucestershire is always exciting with theracing buzz in the air! The daffodils are at their best on theroundabouts and verges to welcome the punters, andthe weather can be beautiful – we have sat outside a pubin the town at 10 o’clock at night after the races in ourshirt-sleeves! On the other hand there has also beensnow for the races, so fingers crossed!

Evergreen grasses such as Festuca glauca or Cortaderiaselloana (pampas grass) are pruned annually in earlyspring. Smaller grasses are lightly pruned to remove deadleaf tips (a pair of scissors does this very easily), whilst thebig pampas grasses need very thick gloves and possiblyhedge trimmers to cut them down hard to the base.Rake out dead material from the base to let in light andair into the centre of the plant.

Shrubs grown for their colourful stems like thedogwoods (cornus alba, c.sanguinea and c.sericea) or thewillows (including salix alba and s. irronata) can be hardpruned now to give the best stem colour for next winter.

Winter flowering heathers look better for an annualpruning to keep the plants compact and bushy. Thebooks recommend using secateurs but if there is a largearea of heathers it is easier to use shears. Don’t cut intothe old wood but just prune off nearly all of the previousseasons growth.

I know that I nag but do keep on top of the weeding –they will start to shoot up now and it will make it so mucheasier later on if you get on top of it now. Annual weeds(ones that grow, seed and die like Hairy Bittercress orHerb Robert) can be hoed off when small if the soil isdryish and left to die. Perennial weeds like dandelions orground elder will need digging out (and make sure youget every last piece of root or it will regrow). Or youcould use a systemic weedkiller like Roundup (followinstructions on the bottle) to zap them, especially if theyare in a difficult to excavate place.

Getting Cheltenham‘ready for the off’

I can’t believe it is a year since the last Festival of racing upat Prestbury Park. All our planning is now complete and Ithink we have pretty much catered for most eventualities.The horses are coming (police ones that is), the staff all

know their duties, we are gettingsome port-a-loos at strategicplaces round the Town, thelicensees (we now call themDPS’s) understand theirresponsibilities, we have extraCCTV staff, the local authoritiesare standing by, the ambulanceservice is ready, our plan for a999 village on the High Streetwill happen to help race goers,the clubs promoting lap-dancingunderstand the line not to crossand my teams are ready andwilling to make sure this Festival is as good as previousyears and keep people safe and encourage them to havea good time.All I need now is a couple of winners and to tell the wife

I am working 4 nights in a row again!Fingers crossed that the majority will have a safe and

enjoyable time and the residents of Cheltenham who arenot involved do not get too irritable about the extra trafficand the obvious disruptions.Normal work does carry on however, despite the huge

staffing implications that the races present. Crime is stillfalling and your local teams are still being as proactive asthey possibly can. In the last couple of weeks we havecarried out a drugs raid on a local nightclub, arrestedpeople for cultivation of cannabis following a warrant andlocked up 3 burglars after a successful sting operation.Behind the scenes we are still beavering away to try and

keep your town as safe as possible and some recent newinitiatives are helping to do this. Your safer communityteam have developed a plan similar to the driverawareness scheme which ‘speeders’ are asked to attend.Our model is more to do with minor violence anddisorder in the town centre. We will be introducing theseyouths and young men, who are all ‘pleasant’ peoplewithout beer on board, to someone who suffered seriousinjuries at the hands of a violent drunk and getting them toface up to the potential consequences of their actions. It’scalled restorative justice and we think it is a better way togo for some individuals than some of the current ways todeal with minor trouble. We will see how it goes.And finally, I must welcome our new Chief Constable,

Suzette Davenport, who we all wish well for the future.Remember – keep ’em locked!

WE HAVE THEANSWER!Having been established in thelettings market in theGloucestershire area for overten years now we are increasinglyreceiving more and more enquiriesfrom unhappy landlords that are not receiving thecorrect service from their current letting agent.Since the recession where there was a

downturn in the sales market, the lettings marketpretty much doubled over night resulting in manymore letting agency's appearing throughout thearea with offers that are hard to refuse, tolandlords that are also feeling the pinch.Unfortunately it’s the old saying " pay peanuts andyou get monkeys". We will then continue on adiscounted rate for the remaining five months ofthe agreement in order to make this transition assmooth as possible without incurring unnecessarycosts.
