Much of the mystery about March meaning and symbolism is solved when we learn the month is named after Mars. Martius, the moniker for Mars is actually the original term for the month of March in Roman calendars.

So what's the big deal about Mars, and why is it associated with March? A paramount god of war to the Roman Empire - an empire structured upon many ardent ideas like: Conquest, Heroism, Battle. Fighting for country, kin and emperor equates to standing resolute to a way of life. And so, Mars is the icon of these fiercely proud, patriotic and heroic qualities.

RECTOR’S COLUMN

...Rector’ s Reflection

I spoke with my friend Terri the other day. Raised in another tradition, she came to the Episcopal church a few years ago, and has found in it, a welcoming and nurturing home. She loves that we are not only allowed, but encouraged to question, to think, and to challenge what we read and hear, even as we honor tradition and look for guidance in Scripture. I asked her how she was observing Lent, and without hesitation, she replied that she has given up liver this year. I told here that’s probably a pretty good idea. My doctor told me liver is full of cholesterol, anyway. Lent seems as good a time as any to set aside things that are bad for us. Christians have been giving things up during Lent for a long time. Usually, it has been things that we especially enjoy, perhaps more than we should. Alcohol comes to mind. Chocolate.

But Lent isn’t all about giving things up. Rather, Lent is a season in which we are to reflect on our lives, and on our relationship with God. It is a time for soul-searching, for taking stock, and, most importantly, for preparing ourselves, mentally and spiritually, for Easter. During this forty-day period, we are to think and to pray about how we can better serve as part of the Body of Christ. We are continually to ask ourselves, how do we best participate in the Resurrection?

As a spiritual practice, setting aside a favorite pastime or food can be a good thing. If our intent is to rid ourselves of a habit or a food or drink that has an element of sin, then there is much to be gained from giving it up for a period of time. By sin, I mean anything that gets between us and our relationship with God (itself a topic worthy of a lifetime of discussion!). If, in the course of this self-denial, we are moved to reflecting on

Ash: It's highly prized tree for its resilience, and that kind of resilience translates well in the month of March. The wood of the ash is incredibly strong, and has been used to create all manner of helpful tools and sacred items. From baseball bats to magic wands, spears and bows to besom handles - the ash gives humans a sense of industry - while remaining flexible to work with the will of man. The Yggdrasil is reputed to be an ash...it's an epic ancient Norse tree conveying the connective qualities of metaphysicality (connections between mundane and heavenly). We get a sense of determined strength combined with a deeper wisdom when we research the symbolism of the ash. It is also a ravenous grower - give it room and light and it will reforest an area with remarkable expedience. Ash offers a message: "Identify your points of strength and use these aspects to the utmost. Do not relinquish to your shortcomings, rather bend with them to create the most advantageous outcome."

While researching what a senior warden does in the Episcopal Church, I came upon a wealth of information such as:

“The senior warden follows the rector in the chain of command of the parish. She is the one who needs to act in place of the rector when the rector is unavailable. She must tend to and support the rector in his ministry -- this includes dealing with issues of confidentiality, informing the rector of issues requiring attention, and helping maintain the good health of the rector by looking out for his spiritual and physical well-being.”

That led me to think of Charlotte Melrose in that position and what a positive role model she is. Thank you, Charlotte, for doing such a good job and making it look easy. So, it is with trepidation and humility that I am following in her footsteps. I would also like to thank Father Tardiff for even thinking I can do that.

This is a very exciting time at Christ Church with our dynamic congregation. It is a time of defining who we are as a parish and where we go from here. During our vestry retreat on Saturday, we will examine the goals we have set for ourselves and see if we have met them or need to reset them. It is daunting and challenging and I ask for your prayers.

that most important of relationships, we may grow spiritually. If we replace that object of our denial with something wholesome, something nourishing to our souls, then we have at our disposal a genuinely useful discipline. For example, we might give up a favorite sitcom and use the time for an extra hour of reading. We might forego a daily trip to the coffee shop and contribute the money saved to a worthy cause (Episcopal Relief and Development and Habitat for Humanity come to mind). If you’re giving up liver, you’re on your own!

What isn’t spiritually nourishing is the practice of some classmates I can remember. Every year, they’d come to school, all sad-eyed and whiney, running on about how they’d given up candy or a favorite activity. They had worked themselves into a state of self-pity, and were determined to share their misery with everyone around them. They couldn’t really tell you what Lent was, or even why they were giving up comic books or chewing gum. All they could tell you was that they had to, they didn’t like it, and they wanted everybody to know it!

If Lent is a time for setting aside sin, and for working on our relationship with our Creator, then we ought to think about what we’re going to add to our lives during those 40 days. It’s a good time to begin or reestablish regular prayer disciplines.

Accordingly, we have added Morning Prayer at Christ Church on Wednesdays and Fridays during Lent. We will, of course, continue to celebrate the Eucharist on Wednesday Evenings. And of course, there are the Daily Devotions for Individuals and Families, beginning on page 136 of the Prayer Book. What matters is not so much what we do, but rather, that we do it! Wishing you a blessed and fulfilling Lent.

St. Patrick's Day:March 17th, the day of St. Patrick's death (461 A.D.) is memorialized in Irish history. He was an incredible individual, and to my view, he embodies the unsinkable, charismatic and doggedly determined theme of March. Why? Because he was a fighter, an innovator and staunch in his passion for bringing awareness to the Christian faith (a minority faith at the time of his life). He was captured as a slave at a young age and ripped from his Irish homeland. This crisis would have dealt a crushing blow to most people, but St. Patrick isn't a saint for nothin'. He overcame his displacement, endured his time as a slave and clung resolutely to a divine vision of helping his Irish kinsmen. Indeed, he did. He returned to Ireland and virtually single-handedly established a strong foothold of Christianity in the area. I realize in this free-thinking era that religious conversion isn't the most noble ideal - however, St. Patrick is worthy of acknowledgement for his enduring spirit - a indomitable spirit that resonates through the whole month of March.

Traditionally, shamrock is said to have been used by Saint Patrick to illustrate the Christian doctrine of the Trinity when Christianizing Ireland in the 6th century. However, this is described by the Oxford English Dictionary a "a late tradition", first recorded in 1726, and is probably false. None the less, since the 18th century, shamrock has been used as a symbol of Ireland in a similar way to how a rose is used for England, thistle for Scotland and leek for Wales.

We believe that God hears and responds to all of our prayers, individual and corporate. Every prayer is to God a love poem from a dear child. Like any loving parent, our God rejoices in the faith that underlies our prayer. Our Christ Church prayer list is offered as but one way to respond to the many and varied concerns of our members and our friends. In an effort to keep this essential part of our prayer life current and relevant, we will be updating the list weekly, and have determined that each month we will start a new list. As most of you know I work at the Humane Society. My job hats are varied. My main function is to purchase all the supplies need at all three shelters on the island. I also am the assistant to the executive director so that is the variety. I help with all of the fundraising events. I know I said volunteering at the beginning of this but my job reaches out to a very wide range of community, from the homeless with pets (yes there are a lot of homeless people who will take care of their dogs before themselves) to the people who are very wealthy.

I receive calls from friends asking all kinds of questions that involve the humane society duties, like barking dogs, lost pets, do you have a black cat, etc. I love helping our furry friends find forever homes with my friends and community. So if you have questions drop me an email at [email protected] and I will try to help. You also can call my cell 960-4108, but I am not always able to answer it when it rings. My personal slogan is "Have you hugged your furry friend today?"

Mardi Gras

On the evening of January 6th. Epiphany was celebrated with an intimate group who enjoyed a delicious pot luck dinner followed by a candlelight Compline on the

labyrinth.

On January 25th some noisy Scotchmen and other folks gathered at the QECC to celebrate Burns Night. The haggis was piped in and was reverently addressed, then stabbed according to tradition. We were lucky enough to have a real haggis. The

haggis was hand delivered from Portland by Jasmine and made by her son Ben. The meal was delicious and included stews and root vegetables to compliment the

haggis. Poetry was read and a fun time was had by all. Lawton Allenby chaired this wonderful event.

Thank you Lawton and to all who attended.

The tables were set with beads, whistles and purple, green and gold table cloths. Most of the guests wore something to put them in the Mardi Gras mood, be it a mask or beads or costumes. Dana turned on her new Bose Sound System and the

line dancing was in full swing; even the children were dancing. The piñata was broken and the children filled their goodie bags with candy. Father Dick said grace and dinner was served. Delicious food was prepared by Dale and his faithful crew. We enjoyed rice, beans, jambalaya, corn bread and green salad followed by New Orleans bread pudding and bourbon sauce. Mmm! Mmm!Next year I want to start with dessert!
