LEARNING IS LIFE’S TREASURE
By partnering for the common good we can
achieve uncommon results.
Chase proudly supports the Celebration of Teaching &
Learning with Thirteen/WNET and WLIW21. We salute all
educators who dedicate themselves to our children.
ducatIon Is at the
heart of everything we
do at THIRTEEN. As a
pioneering provider of
quality television and
web content, unique local
productions, and innovative educational
and cultural projects, our mission is to
enrich the lives of our community—from
pre-schoolers and adult learners to those
who have a passion for lifelong learning.
This special edition of THIRTEEN—
our second annual Education Issue
—showcases some of our most exciting
educational endeavors.
On March 5 and 6, the fifth annual
Celebration of Teaching & Learning comes
to New York City. The nation’s premier
professional development conference for
educators, it is perhaps best known for its
remarkable keynote speakers. See page
6 to learn about this year’s starry roster,
which includes U.S. Secretary of Education
Arne Duncan; Lisa Henson, CEO, The Jim
Henson Company; Her Majesty Queen
Noor; and music superstar Queen Latifah.
Our Education Department works
year-round on a variety of outreach
programs and special initiatives for
students, educators, and parents in New
York State and beyond. Ron Thorpe, Vice
President and Director of Education at
WNET.ORG, offers an inside look at this
vibrant department on page 2.
Our commitment to education extends
into the community with Curious George
Saves the Day: The Art of Margret and
H.A. Rey, a fascinating exhibit opening
March 14 at The Jewish Museum. See
page 14 to learn about the exhibit, as well
as special offers available exclusively to
THIRTEEN members.
Finally, we’re proud to launch our
newly expanded children’s website, Kids
THIRTEEN (kids.thirteen.org). Smart fun for
kids of all ages! See page 27 for details.
And of course, don’t forget to check
the listings section, beginning on page
8, so you’ll know when to tune in to your
favorite THIRTEEN programs!

It all starts wIth our basic mission, which is to
offer viewers television and web-based experiences
that educate, inform, enlighten, and entertain. We want
to give teachers the tools that really help connect their
students with the content and the learning skills. Given
the right tools, teachers can do wonders in the classroom.
thE cEntErpIEcE of the Education Dept is the LAB,
which stands for Life After Broadcast. Producers come
to us with ideas for television shows they’re thinking
about making and want to know what we might do with
those shows from an education perspective. The people
in the LAB bat it around and come back with some ideas.
We want to extend the life of these wonderful television
shows so that people can use them for years and years.
We want to create web-based curriculum that students
can benefit from for decades. Funders of our national
broadcasts often look very closely at what the plan is
beyond the broadcast—that’s the essence of what the
Education Department does here.
It’s not your typIcal education conference. Our
participants get access to the best people in different
fields. We think that kind of an approach to professional
development raises the expectations of all educators
by putting teachers back into the position of being
learners themselves.
Celebration is the place where knowledge meets
inspiration. We don’t believe there’s anyone in the world
who is too important to speak to teachers. We’ve had
Tom Brokaw, Majora Carter, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, and
Alan Alda as guest speakers over the years—people that
teachers never in their lives thought they’d be in the
same room with. That’s transformative.

paid to learn new things. It’s very, very exciting.

Everyday, all across America, the 3.2 million members of the National
Education Association create enthusiasm for learning. We know that
caring and qualified teachers inspire students and help to make great
public schools. Successful students and great public schools will prepare us to meet the challenges of the 21st
century and a global society.
America’s public school educators provide opportunities for students to be
challenged and inspired—to discover their potential and find success.
America’spublic schools,
America’sfuture
t thE cElEbratIon of Teaching
& Learning last year, keynote
speaker Sir Kenneth Robinson
spoke about the central role
creativity plays in our lives. One
school superintendent in the
audience was so moved, she gave a
copy of Sir Kenneth’s new book to every graduating
senior in her school district.
That’s the kind of magic that happens at the Celebration,
the nation’s premier professional development conference
for K-12 educators, hosted by THIRTEEN and WLIW21.
“The Celebration of Teaching & Learning truly dem-
onstrates public media’s power to educate, inform
and inspire,” said Neal Shapiro, President and CEO of
WNET.ORG. “It provides a vital forum where educators
can come together and gain the tools, insight and
perspective to maximize their impact in and out of
the classroom.”
“This experience has helped
keep good teachers in the
system and motivated others
to consider making changes
to become better teachers.”

Celebrate TeachingStudentsEducation
Let’s give every child a great education. It’s what children deserve—and what teachers want to provide. But teachers need the tools, time and trust to help their students succeed. The Celebration of Teaching & Learning Conference will empower teachers to help our kids.
Strengthening our schools will take shared responsibility and a shared commitment to excellence. Students, teachers and parents must form a working bond. Teachers unions and their management counterparts need a genuine partnership for reforms to succeed.
The AFT is leading changes that foster great teaching and great prospects for our young people. We invite our fellow educators, elected officials, business leaders and community groups to join us.
Together, we can forge a new path for our public schools—and change public education for our changing world.
