    News

This month, life seems all about awakeningsand resurrections, about kicking off winter andtaking on spring. All those March high windsdemand high spirits, brave enough to go wherethey list - for what the season lacks in warmth, itmakes up for with a vigour hard enough toshake the limbs of trees and dancers alike.

So this month we present our readers withanother blast of invigorating Dance Irelandnews, notices and opportunities. Just over thepage you’ll find details of those selected to par-ticipate in Re-Presenting Ireland, part of theeagerly anticipated Dublin Dance Festival, aswell as news of a forthcoming one-day work-shop and public presentation at DanceHousewith Simone Forti. There’s also news of Bodyand Architecture with Hayo David, the thirdand final in our series of multi-disciplinaryexchanges, and a quick heads up on our ballet

    international guest residency with CatherinePlomteux.

And perhaps it’s us (or perhaps it’s simply springin the air) but the inundation of articles wereceived from our members about all the per-formances, classes and activities happeningthroughout the country was both unexpectedand inspiring. You can find out what we meanright now by turning the page. We think you’llbe just as inspired.

Of course, we weren’t really all that surprised.Dance may be a hard life, but it’s a good one.And what’s the measure of a good life? Well, welike how one March-born poet marked it: theneed to be yourself, and nothing more.

So welcome to a hard month. And for thosearriving late, welcome to the good life.

    CHOREOGRAPHIC WORKSHOP ANDOPEN TALK WITH SIMONE FORTI Date: Thursday 20 March, 2008Time: 10am - 2pm (workshop)Venue: DanceHouseFees: Members €30; Non-Members €50 Open Talk - 3.30pm to 5pm

Sometimes our dancing doesn’t have access towhat’s on our minds, while our words don’thave access to what we know in our bones. Inour daily lives, we spontaneously weavetogether body language and spoken words tohelp us understand and communicate. TheLogomotion workshop with Los Angeles-based dancer/choreographer and writerSimone Forti cultivates this poetic, synergeticprocess. Class will include working withmovement improvisation and simple exercisesin moving while speaking. It’s wonderful howour movement responds to the thoughts andimages that our words bring to light, while ourthoughts in their turn are influenced by theenergy and syntax of our moving body.

Open Talk Simone will talk about her practice and themain influences on its development: danceimprovisation with Anna Halprin in the 1950s;the legendary Judson Dance Theater whichrevolutionized modern dance in New York inthe 1960s, and her coming to working with

language and subject matter. From her earlyminimalist dance-constructions, through heranimal movement studies, land portraits andnews animations, Forti has had a seminalinfluence on her field. This promises to be anengaging and illuminating exploration of aunique artist’s practice.

Presented by Dance Ireland in collaborationwith Irish Modern Dance Theatre andProject Arts Centre.

In the third and final workshop in our series ofmulti-disciplinary exchanges, Hayo David willlead Body and Architecture, an investigationinto the relations between the body and thespace and architecture that surrounds it. Thisworkshop is open to dancers and non-dancers(such as architecture students) but allparticipants should be prepared to workphysically.

Any architecture is potentially scenic andcapable of inspiring performance and dance.Through sight, hearing, our sense of gravityand even taste, the body continuously analysesand interrogates space and its potential for

movement. Thus, a sort of ‘virtual space/timedance’ is continuously present, limited only byour imagination. Through a series of exercises, assignments and improvisations participantswill attempt to awaken their sense andawareness of inner and outer space, and of thephysical self. Combining inside with outsideand virtual imagination with real action, apowerful tool for dance improvisation will becreated that can both expand one’s movementvocabulary and enrich one’s ‘dialogue’ withspace.

Working with simple objects and implementsto create moving architectures to change and

measure the space in which they are created, those participating will develop situations, actions and improvisations in different spacesin DanceHouse. It is envisaged that thisworkshop will be playful, creative, physical andinquisitive; no fixed path of investigation willbe followed and side tracks are always possible.

    COMPANY NEWS

DAGHDHA DANCE COMPANY‘The Year of the Review’

Although Daghdha Dance Company acknowledgesthe decision by the Arts Council to review the artisticdirection of the company in 2008 (with a reducedbudget and revised programme still to be agreed),the company has informally appealed the decision, feeling that Council has made an inappropriate andwrongful judgment in cutting Daghdha’s funding.

Under Michael Klien’s direction we believe Daghdhahas become a unique, not to mention internationallyadmired, model for producing in the field of danceand choreography, with our productions standing asan example of some of the finest work in this fieldtoday. In responding to the decision Klien stated thathe was ‘very disappointed that [our] far-reachingsuccesses in stimulating both the Irish and internationaldance and arts scene has not been recognised…Sinceits inception Daghdha has been at [both] the heart andavant-garde of Irish arts. This is unique. For 20 years thiscompany has avoided premature institutionalisationand put its name to creative thinking in movement atthe deepest and most profound level.’

Indeed, the company is guided by artistic principlesrather than market forces and our aim has alwaysbeen to support artists in pursuing a realistic careerwithin Ireland. To achieve this we follow a policy ofsimplicity and tight production costs. As a result, then, the reduced award will have a much greater effectupon artists than the Arts Council might haveanticipated.

Daghdha intends to embrace the review process, notonly through the required external review but also bymeans of an internal process whereby artists, staffand audience will come together to discuss ourstructure and workings, as well as by the evaluation ofinvited independent writers and specialists of thoseunique processes evolving within our company.

Finally we wish to thank everyone who has supportedDaghdha in the past; we are confident that 2008, the‘Year of the Review’, can only strengthen our futuredevelopment and enhance our position as one ofIreland’s leading dance organisations.

Should you wish to offer support, a comment or simplydiscuss any queries, please feel free to drop by for acoffee or failing this, contact us at (061) 467 872 www.daghdha.ie.
