There’s little doubt Jake Scott will remember the 2007 National Western

Stock Show (NWSS) for three reasons:First, frigid temperatures made life tough

not only getting to and from Denver, butalso during preparations for the Angus penand carload shows in the historicstockyards.

Second, Rolling RRR Ranch LLC, theoperation Scott manages, took home grandchampion and reserve grand championhonors in the pen-of-three competition.

And third, Scott’s peers recognized him asthe American Angus Association’s Herdsmanof the Year. It’s an award he says he’s honoredto receive, but, he adds, it’s more of areflection of the hard work and dedication ofthe good people he works with.

“You’re only as good as the people youhave around you,” says Scott, who is generalmanager of the Edmond, Okla.-based Angusranch.

“This award,” explains Rod Wesselman,Association regional manager, “recognizes anexhibitor who works diligently during theyear preparing Angus cattle at the shows.Jake’s hard work and dedication areexemplary for the Angus breed.”

Crème de la crèmeScott is a graduate of Oklahoma State

University, where he competed on thelivestock judging team and earned a degreein animal science and business.

His first job out of college was withNebraska-based Whitestone-Krebs, where hesuccessfully managed the ranch’s showbarnactivities.

In 2003 he joined Rolling RRR RanchLLC, where he oversees the management ofthe operation’s 800 Angus cows, andcoordinates production and marketingactivities with two cooperator herds. Thesecooperator herds provide both recipient

cows for the ranch’s embryo transplant (ET)program and purebred Angus cattle.

Rolling RRR, which is owned by MarcRowland, teamed with Express Ranches toform a marketing alliance known as ExpressGenetics. The bulk of bulls and femalesproduced by Rolling RRR are marketedthrough Express Ranch’s Angus sales, although the ranch does offer some cattleprivate treaty.

“When Marc and Express first formed thispartnership, it made a lot of sense for both ofus. It still does today,” Scott says. “Expresshelped shape the Rolling RRR breedingprogram, and we are able to produce avolume of cattle that are similar to Express’both genetically and in kind. Therefore, it isstill a good fit today.”

As part of the ranch’s customer service, the ranch offers show preparation services tobuyers of its elite cattle. That means Scottand others with the company spend a greatdeal of their time helping their customersprepare their cattle for exhibition andcompetition.

“It’s a niche market for us,” Scott explains.Rolling RRR exhibits cattle at only one

show each year, however, and that’s why themarketing exposure at Denver has come toplay such a critical role for the ranch’s success.

“Denver is the crème de la crème,” Scottsays. “For the Angus breed as a whole, it’s

enormous. There are trends that comeand go, but the one thing that’s been amainstay in this business over the years isthat people still enjoy the competition, and they still enjoy looking atphenotypically superior cattle. They getto see the best of the best.”

This year, they got to see the bestRolling RRR Ranch had to offer. And thecompany met and exceeded everyexpectation by exhibiting both the grandchampion and reserve grand championpen of three. The grand champion penconsisted of January 2006 sons of EXARNew Look 2971, BR Midland and EXARLutton 1831. They posted an averageweight of 1,413 pounds (lb.) and firstwon early calf champion pen.

The reserve grand champion pen firstwon late calf champion pen. TheFebruary 2006 progeny of BR Midlandand EXG Osage N112 R3 posted anaverage weight of 1,313 lb.

For Scott, he takes it all in stride.“It’s an honor to be recognized by my

peers in this business,” Scott says. “Thereare a lot of very deserving, hard-workingpeople who deserved it as much as I did.But the award is not a reflection on me;it’s a reflection on the program and thepeople we’ve assembled around us.”
