Dear Parish Family,

As I write this the grass is finally visible, and the crocuses are even starting to peep out from the earth – spring is just around the corner – THANKS BE TO GOD!

This winter has been brutal on us in many ways – in our homes, our schools and even in our parish family as we count the cost of snow and ice removal - $40,000 to date, which is far more than we usually have to pay. Your generous support of our parish offertory helps us to meet these safety costs as well as many other needs; it keeps the church and school open for worship and activities when many others have to close. Thank you for your great generosity and love!

If this brutal winter was a penance for us it has been good preparation for the SEASON OF PENANCE that is just around the corner. LENT arrives on Ash Wednesday, March 5th. It will give us many opportunities to grow in holiness and love. Further details are available elsewhere in this bulletin, via Flocknote, and on large banners we will hang in the church - but look out for the following:

• 4 Masses for Ash Wednesday• Additional opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Sundays • Adoration and Benediction every Wednesday• Parish Penance Service• A PARISH MISSION with Fr Josh Wagner • Friday Fish Fries

It’s going to be an awesome Lent!

On the subject of Fish Fries I want you to know that we have discontinued serving alcohol at our fish fries. This is because we hold this event on Fridays in Lent. These Fridays are supposed to be days of fasting rather than feasting or partying. Though we would all rather do the latter, the Church calls us to fast. We feel that a “no alcohol” policy fits better with the spirit of the season.

Finally, I want all our young parents to know that I am actively working to get a functional nursery open for the 8.45am and 10.30am Masses by the first Sunday in Lent. I also hope to have it open for the Parish Mission.

I consider this to be a vital resource for the many wonderful parents of little ones that we have, and I am sorry that we haven’t made it happen sooner. We will get it cleaned, prepared and open as soon as possible, and then look to revamp and decorate it over the summer (volunteer help for that will be welcome!). However, be assured that if you want to bring your little ones to Mass instead they are always, always, always welcome.

God Bless

Fr Bob

With more than 17,000 items in the collection, the St Brendan School Library plays an integral role in the school’s curriculum. The St Brendan School Library is a busy place. Every week every class visits the Library on a regularly scheduled basis. Following the Library Guidelines established by the State of Ohio and the Diocese of Columbus, Mrs. Joan Roberts, our Librarian, teaches library and informational skills to all students grades K -8. During their classes, students check out books, learn about new books, authors, and illustrators, and develop important skills preparing them to be 21st century learners.

Middle School students work in an 80-minute block schedule with Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Keenan, our Technology Coordinator. This allows flexibility as they work with the students on projects that stem from their classrooms. Currently, all Middle School students are preparing for our annual Research Fair, March 13, 2014. All Middle School students take part in the Research Fair. Each grade level researches a different topic area. Every student will write a paper, create an informational display, and prepare an oral presentation. Numerous language arts, social studies, and religion objectives as well as library guidelines

are addressed through the Research Fair process. The Research Fair exemplifies the collaboration that takes place between our teachers and the Library.

Throughout her 27 years at St Brendan, it has been Mrs. Roberts’ privilege to nurture the love of reading in hundreds of students. Her philosophy is that reading is the most important skill for children to attain. Our annual Book Fair ranks as one of the most successful Book Fairs in Central Ohio, a fact which underscores the our school’s deeply ingrained conviction in the power and importance of reading. The Book Fair benefits not only the school Library, but also every classroom library. Visit St Brendan School at any time and you will always find students with book in hand, engaged in reading.

During her tenure, our Library has grown from a wide space in the hallway to the inviting, spacious room it is today. The Library has always been blessed to be staffed by a cadre of loyal and dedicated volunteers without whom it would be impossible to operate our Library program successfully. NOW ACCEPTING
